It's very interesting how both Qbby and Kirby have similar development situations.
Both were originally placeholder designs for their respective series until they decided to keep them the way they are.
HAL Laboratory just can't stop falling in love with their prototype characters!
Oh really? That's really interesting! I don't know much (if anything) about Kirby's development, but I'd be up for covering it in the future

I’ve done some research myself in my spare time, and the development of both Kirby’s Dream Land for the Game Boy and Kirby’s Adventure for the NES are quite fascinating, especially the discussion’s around Kirby’s design. You should definitely do a video about them. It’s essentially the character that first put HAL laboratories on the map for most gamers, so it’s also interesting from that perspective.
Kirby and Qbby were both originally placeholders? Wow.

I presume he meant that he didn’t previously know that Qbby’s design was originally a placeholder. He already knew that Kirby’s was a initially a placeholder. The Kirby series =/= the BoxBoy series, so not knowing everything about the development history of the BoxBoy games (or, by extension, Qbby) doesn’t really have much to do with being a Kirby Master.

When I saw this in my subscriptions I got excited lol. The BoxBoy series is one of my favorites and I'm glad the series is still continuing (even if not many people talk about it). Another fun fact is that the developer had the idea of having a co-op mode, but didn't add it to the game because he wasn't sure how successful it would be. Seeing how BoxBoy+BoxGirl has co-op makes me very happy for the developer and hopeful for future games in the series!

Great episode! I must confess, I had never payed too much attention to BoxBoy and didn't even realize it was developed by HAL. It's very cool to know that even in bigger studios there are people thinking back to, and being inspired by, older games!
Definitely! While there's certainly a lot to love about modern big budget AAA games, there's something so nice about the mechanical simplicity of older games too. I really feel like Nintendo + HAL are really carrying the baton here!

I played through the three first games and damn, the lore of these series is much bigger than what you would expect from a puzzle game.
Hey! It's another one of my favorite series! I simply adore the BOX BOY! series, having 100%ed all three of the 3DS installments. As you mentioned, the visuals are stylish, the gameplay is fun and simple to pick up, and all the little unlockable extras (namely the little 4koma comics) show how much love the studios has for this franchise. Even the way the second and third games unlock extra stuff if you had the previous installments feels like a grateful nod from the developers! The only thing about this franchise that makes me sort of sad is how the Qbby amiibo was a Japan exclusive, and how prohibitely expensive it is nowadays...I'll be grabbing the new Switch entry very soon! The co-op component is sure to be fun to share with my best friend!
Definitely! I'll be trying to convince my brother to do the co-op with be, too! Prying him away from Smash may be a little difficult though, haha

Such a good puzzle platformer. Most have a hard time making puzzles challenging without getting too difficult.

I wonder if you've heard of Shinya Kumazaki though? He's the general director of the Kirby series and has directed and worked on far more Kirby titles than Sakurai ever did but the poor guy never seems to get any credit (probably because he's never done any English directs to be fair). I don't think anyone's done a video on him? It would be nice to get his name out there. :)

I love this series so much. I bought it off the whim one day with a coupon from MyNintendo and it was a great decision. I would spend hours playing the games on the 3ds and I’m enjoying playing Boxboy + Boxgirl on the switch but I haven’t had a lot of time to play it.
It’s a series I love and I’m glad it exists.
Also I love Qbby and the gang. They’re all very good.

Edit: So yeah, I love Boxboy, I bought the first game the day it came out on a whim, and have been a fan of the series ever since.
But I always thought the girl should be called Boxbox.
Boxboy=XY male
Boxbox=XX female

Yeah, I'm the same. I'm thinking pretty hard about getting this new game on Switch though, especially if I can convince my younger brother to play it with me. He's s lot better at games than I am, haha
BOXBOY is such a great game series and I’m glad they released a sequel on the Nintendo Switch even if Bye Bye BOXBOY felt like a good conclusion.

BOXBOY+BOXGIRL came out a few months ago on the switch! It's a lot of fun. I have completed the game almost 100% but I probably won't because it's hard to get all S ranks! Other then the S ranks I have done everything in that game. I highly recommend it and can't wait for the next game!

Kirby's epic yarn was developed by good feel, not Hal laboratories. (It was at the beginning of the video)

The Box Boy series are great! The stories are really dark though.
What's the GB block throwing game you showed in the video? I would have played the hell out of that game back in the day (And will probably do nowadays as well once I know its name).

I did find it, eventually. It wasn't bad, but it was more on the "puzzle" end of the spectrum, while I prefer something more geared towards the "action" end. Tetris Attack aka Panel de Pon aka Puzzle Challenge is my sweet spot.
If you liked Flipull try Dharma Doujou (in case you don't know it already). You'll probably enjoy it ;)

I’ve only played the demos myself, but I’d definitely recommend them. They are puzzle-oriented rather than being platformers like Kirby, but they are very good regardless. I’d love to get them for my own sometime.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna switch back to it again! The video wasn't (/isn't) performing super well and I thought maybe the thumbnail was putting people off, but I think that actually BoxBoy is just more obscure than I thought. Oh well, you live and learn!
