The Professor Layton series is one I hold very dear to my heart. I absolutely love it. The puzzles are challenging, the characters are quirky, and the story is amazing. But all of this was originally never going to be. Layton and his apprentice Luke weren't a part of Curious Village until well into development. And on this episode of Beta64, you're going to learn all about how this game was being created.

When Curious Village first came out in Australia, we got the North American cover, then later on down the track it was upgraded to the European (hat) version.
I still have both with the Australian PG rating on them.
Strange, I only ever saw the European version of the cover, not the American version. But either way, I'm glad they upgraded it to the European version, I think I prefer it honestly.
Truthfully, I love the Layton series a lot. I myself have only played five of the games in the series (Curious Village actually not being one of them), but I do love all the games that I have played. It really is a fantastic series, with the OST, the cutscenes, the characters, and the stories, and it's interesting to think that, had it not been for licensing issues, this series would have never come to.

There was also another spin-off for mobile, but it's less Laytonesque, and more like Ace Attorney.
Lady Layton comes out this year, and you have Layton Brothers in mobile devices!
But hey! We got the crossover with Ace Attorney

The "Dragon like thing" is actually an imp from Dragon Quest
that's what I was thinking as well, though it looks poorly photoshopped out of some white background.

i almost cried at the end of pandoras ( where i live, its called Diabolical Box ) box, but when he said he cried in unwound future... in in chapter 4... im worried

Surprised you didn't add the concept art that can be found in the bonus section. The concepts for Professor Layton and Luke were very interesting, and the original designs for Flora and Bruno make me wonder what the original concept story was gonna be.
I love the European Box art so much :)
I think it has some nostalgic reasons, but it is so sleek and elegant, I think it is simply perfect.
Game 3 is called 'Lost Future' in UK; they pulled a 'Sorcerer's Stone' with the American Title.

Actually, they pulled a "Sorcerer's Stone" with the European title (I know the metaphor doesn't work quite as well). Like most games, they came out in north america before the PAL version, so technically Diabolical Box, Unwound Future, and Last Specter are the 'original' names (I actually think the first two UK names were a bit strange and bad but Spectre's Call is definitely the superior title in that case)
If you didn't cry at least once during unwound future, you're a fucking monster
B.J. Stewart I heard this was the best. So I save it for last. When Claire died I was crying. I didn't think it could get worse. Then Luke left. And Clive... he was insane. I feel empty without these games.
And also the ending of curious village, godamnit I had no idea a puzzle game about tophat wearing gentlemen was gonna make me cry
I wish you had talked about the puzzle differences betwen regions, but well, I loved this video anyways.

With the boxarts, you missed how australia got a whole jumble of different boxarts. My copy of Curious Village has the American Boxart but edited to fit Australia's age ratings on it, but when it came to Pandora's Box and The Lost Future, we got the European boxart, just edited to fit in the slimmer black cases that the majority of NDS games came in over here, whereas Europe has thicker clear cases. But then when Last Specter came out we got the American boxart again just edited like Curious Village, and THEN when Curious Village was re-released we got the European boxart to fit with the rest of the original trilogy. It's a complete mess.

Judging by my profile pic, I think you can tell I adore the Professor Layton series. In fact, the Curious Village was my first ever videogame, and I've never stopped loving it. I'm glad that Beta64 has recognised what a great series it is.

And the animated scenes where done by animation studio P.A. Works which is also known for shows like: Angel Beats!, True Tears, Shiro Bako, and Charlotte.

Always loved level 5 games that music. I fell in love with this game at the title screen alone. Layton's theme brought me back to dark cloud 2. I remember playing Layton and watching the cutscenes thinking WOW this is really good animation for the ds! Great video man!

I remember seeing the poster for this game at Walmart when I was little and I could just tell that it looked like a very high quality game. Unfortunatly I never got around to playing it or any games in the series but maybe some day I will.

I've always loved the professor layton games. i still remeber when i played my first layton game, the spectre's call, and since then i have been hooked.
And then the Diabolical Box came and it became one of my favourite games ever, the story was playing perfectly on the thin line between reality and impossible whereas the other Laytons were going to the impossible part a bit too much.
Nigga Layton 2 is probabily the most unrealistic one -_-

In the third, Layton's dead girlfriend comes back to life, in the fourth, there's a golden garden, on the fifth there's a mask that let you do miracles, on the sixth there's an ancient-futuristic "race" and on the crossover... Just... Let's not talk about that. The second one is the most realistic one! A box that contains a gas that makes people hallucinate they're worst fear! Something similar could be done in reality. (Expect the fear bit)

Just wanted to point out that the devil bat monster thing is actually a monster from the Dragon Quest series called an Imp. It makes sense for that to be in there as a filler as Level 5 were the developers behind both Dragon Quest VIII and IX.

This was a really good video! I suddenly now have the urge to replay the curious village and maybe get back into professor Layton. (I stopped after the 2nd game, because I was a kid and didn't have money to buy games)

Hey Beta 64, I have always loved Easter eggs and secrets I found out inside games. I used to play lots of video games with my brother and we would laugh so hard when we found a glitch or Easter egg and that's one of the main reasons I played games like super Mario 64 and banjo kazooie and so I really enjoy the content your creating I hope you keep it up and keep doing whatever you do because your doing it great!😆

Unwound Future is the only Layton title I have ever owned. But it holds first place on the 3DS' daily log for average play time. I wish I could do the last section of the game again because it was so impressive.
I loved the game.
I thought Curious Village was story and character free when I picked it up on clearance. I was definitely not expecting to fall in love with the series that day.

I too cried - a lot - in the ending of Lost Future. But it was not my first time, as I cried in the ending of Pandora's Box too.
I haven't grown up playing Professor Layton very much, but It was also one of my first 3ds games. Which reminds me I still have to finish Miracle Mask Azran Legacy

In Australia, we got the game with both the American and European covers. I actually have both as I when I lent my original copy to a childhood friend who never gave it back, so although I now have both boxes but only one game.

Greatest Puzzle series ever
I'm sure everybody's said it, but it's a Dragon Quest enemy, and it looks like it was ripped wholesale.
Professor Layton Unwound Future is also the first game I cried while playing! Glad I wasn't the only one. Just curious, was it the final cutscene when Claire has to leave Layton that made you cry? That what made me.
Anyways, this video was awesome and I now really wanna play some Professor Layton.
