These guys are clueless in their complaints. Complain for the sake of complaints
You are wrong. Tesla didn't invent the frunk. The VW bug did.
Good point
Yes. But did they call it a frunk?

The bZ4X AWD, here in North America, has a slower max charging speed because Toyota put a slower CATL battery in, while the FWD, along with all the Lexus models, and every single bZ4X sold outside of North America got faster charging Panasonic batteries. I assume supply chain issues meant they could not source as many Panasonic batteries as they wanted, and knew that Europe and Asia wouldn't put up with this crap battery, so dumped it on North America, perhaps assuming we were too dumb to know what we are missing. They picked AWD because that's 80% of bZ4X sales here, so they could dump more of the crap batteries and save the good ones for their overpriced Lexus, and for Europe and Asia, since they have better infrastructure and are more likely to realize how bad the battery is compared to every other EV on the market today, including cheaper cars like the Bolt.
They had to do an AWD because Subaru only sells AWD vehicles.
No matter how you slice and dice it, bZ4X is dreck. Overpriced dreck. I almost laughed right at a guy in one i saw at a DC fast charger, like how could you be so dumb to buy that thing…
@@JohnCap523 because Subaru only sells AWD vehicles. BRZ would like a word with you.
@@CACressida I did not realize the BRZ was only RWD. I wonder how many of the 14 BRZ buyers also knew…
@@JohnCap523 well according to your statement, Subaru ONLY sells AWD. 8,587 people knew in 2013, 3,345 people knew in 2022 and ~2,500 people knew this year. A lot more than your predicted 14 people.
@@CACressida Ok troll
The only BZ4X I have seen in real life was a used one at a Kia dealership with only 1,500 miles on it. Someone must have realized their mistake pretty quickly.
What mistake???
@@allentoyokawa9068are we looking at the same car lol
@@allentoyokawa9068 if they bought that BZ4X at the elevated prices of a few months ago and then sold it after only 1,500 miles then they made a GIGANTIC financial mistake.
I saw one. ONE. Driving home from Vegas. I thought I saw a UFO. These things are so illusive.
@@BungieStudios I saw one at a charging station. Made me wonder where its young owner had scored mushrooms…
I agree with Nathan about the leg width. I have the same issue with the 2023 Rogue. It’s a very comfortable car but they made the center console so wide that you can’t spread out your legs if you wanted. And they easily could have adjusted since they have the storage underneath the shifter.
As a BZ4X owner, I am grumpy as hell about the infotainment system. Profiles? PIN codes? Phones can’t connect? Absolutely ridiculous software, even with an update, it’s painfully bad.
What made you think the BZ4X was the best choice compared to the competing vehicles?
it looked like a good update after 2023, but they still have a long way to go
Why would you buy such a vehicle without researching the market, with so many better cars available?
Toyota's reliability. But they proved that their reliability isn't enough to carry them into the EV era.
@@thekat-dg9fx reliability is unproven for their first BEV that was recalled for wheels loosening
For all the people crying about lack of performance, this is not a bad thing.
Young drivers and very old drivers having insane acceleration and high top speeds is a recipe for disaster (and insurance costs).
The “bZ” stands for “Beyond Zero”. As in “beyond zero emissions”. “4” refers to body size while the “X” infers body type of the SUV.
🤣🤣
🤣🤣
Probably designed and named in California.
Makes me think of "Beyond Beef." I assume this, too, is a disappointing waste of money that solves zero problems.
What in the world was Toyota thinking with this!?
They had spare parts they figured they could cobble together to make this junk
Pretty clearly a half-baked, rushed design. Toyota and Subaru saw the takeoff of EV sales, realized they had to have *something* to sell in that segment, and got something production-ready as quickly as they could. It's a stopgap effort to have something to offer their many brand loyalists so they don't leave the brands. They aren't making very many of them, indicating they don't expect them to really sell except maybe to people who are determined to stay in their brand families but yet want an EV.
Now that the market has Toyota's attention and they've publicly announced a 180 with regard to their plans to bring EVs to market, it will be interesting to see what their next models are like. Toyota remains a formidable engineering and manufacturing company. But that's probably MY 2025 or 2026 at the earliest.
Bz4x how to say "we don't want to make an EV without saying, we don't want to make an EV"
Toyota is flailing... and publicly flailing. A month ago they were talking about their amazing solid state battery (750 mile range, 10 minute charge time) and then two weeks ago announced they are going all in on Hydrogen ICE engines (FFS).
@@MLHunt are they still pushing hydrogen?
Q: How many info screens work while wearing gloves? Or your hands are wet? Bring back dials and switches! The black portions of front end look like, from a distance, that there are body parts missing
What's not to love?! Other than more expensive, less range, slower charging, no OTA, less room and poor performance compared to competition.
The wheels may fall off
@@johnb7430 😂
Yeah, but at least it’s ugly. 😂
But they help you out by only allowing you to fast charge twice in a 24 hour period.
You forgot the gauges hidden behind the wheel! As in the prius...
Considering this is from the world's richest automaker and that they're so late to the EV party and have had plenty of time and money to perfect it, this is a really poor effort.
Seems like they put the summer interns on this job and said make an EV but don't spend any real money making it good so we can tell stock holders we have an EV.
Exactly my thoughts!! The only reason I see people buying this is huge discounts on them but still not worth it.
Actually, Toyota was first with the Prius, sold globally since 2012. They know what they are doing functionally, but visually some models are not the most stylish.
@@777rogerfthe Prius isn't electric buddy. Hybrid. Cmon now.
Rich? Toyota is the world’s most in debt company.
Could by any chance a buyer from MENA region have an update of the car to run car play on it as well having the screen all English?
It's exactly what it looks like. It's a modified Corolla ICE platform. Pure panic move.
There are many sold here in Norway. And most of us love The Car. And i have had 5 new cars in 6 years, before i bought this. People who critisise The Car, most of them have never driven it
So many cars these days have that same problem Nathan pointed out: a protruding center console that prohibits comfort-spreading.
I saw a bz4x and I have to say it does a lot better than the feminine , curvy, lowly and slopey, and catfishy Tesla . It's much more masculine and standing taller with sharp edges and higher ground clearance and inspired more confidence
It was just released and it's already outdated and not very affordable
Just signed a lease on the BZX-4 AWD. There's some pretty good lease deals to be had (no money down and competive payments)... Doesn't hurt to be in Colorado and get another $5000 tax credit. I'm less grumpy to discover that the interior chiming during reverse can be disabled among many other customizations. Happy with the ample ground clearance for some back road exploring. I'll be able to live with the range and dc charging speeds.
Oh, didnt know about the reverse chime disable. Hope my solterra is the same although my wife probably needs it lol
@@MtnXfreeride Ya it's mentioned in the manual as a configurable option. You will need the dealer to change it though, it's not in the user facing menu.
Please keep the “grumpiness” going, everyone else are always so over enthusiastic about anything they review, it is such an great new way of showing what the car is really like. 👍🤗
Thank you guys for another wonderful review video, (as always). 🤗🤗🤗
Hey @TFLEV. Just read on InsideEVs that the 2024 BZ4X AWD models now charge at 150KW and have retuned charging software. Hoping you could do a review to see if this shows any improvement in previous poor showings
This is for people that hate EV'S. And that front end, what's with the front end and the fenders need paint? Also, for the price some must have more dollars than sense.
I know people love to hate on Elon and Tesla. However, I think they still make the best electric cars...
Which sucks for me because I hate Tesla. This bz4X is absolute crap. If I could have an EV Tacoma or EV CHR with Comma OpenPilot, it'd be the perfect vehicle.
The thing I dislike about Tesla is that it encourages you to look at the dash tablet. I don't like taking my eyes off the road. OpenPilot makes sure you watch the road. AutoPilot, you have to watch the tablet for it to notify you to tug on the steering wheel. It's so stupid.
They make great electric cars with terrible ergonomics and build quality.
Well Grumpus, I really like the bZ4x AWD. Let me start, it's electric.. I began this journey with a 2001 Prius Hybrid, then in 2019 a Prius Prime which allows 30 miles full electric. Favorite mode was that first 30 miles. Now the bZ4x which uses 8% to 15% of battery going 40 to 65 miles daily and trickle charges overnight to full charge. The only maintenance is tire rotation for 80,000 miles and I have a Toyota Dealer in town. It can get hot here in AZ and the battery has a dedicated cooling system. Battery warranty is 12 years. The AWD function is among the best you can buy, right? Now, if I could get an owners manual and a second FOB, both on order for months, I'd be set. Happy with my purchase so far.
@@outsmiter4894 Tesla's tech is one of the best, but the ride is so bumpy, why tires has to be at 44 psi? I can't ride in there for more than 30 min, all my friends said the same thing. They would take their other car for long trips. My ES350 and RX350 are very smooth and quiet, but I would choose a Camry over model 3 or Y any day, with a 32 psi on my tires of course.
@@khoiquachsame reason as truck tyres needing high psi, higher weight, higher psi. Also tesla all have a sportscar focus so the suspension is going to be either very expensive or very hard, they chose hard as more expensive won't sell or fit below model x or s pricing
It charges very slow and has terrible range. This is why it failed.
This is my story as well. My wife is extremely tech resistant so a car controlled by a computer screen was out of the question. Of all the BEVs we looked at Toyota was the most like what she was used to driving, like, just start the car and drive =)
I tried to get a new rx350, and it had the same problem, why does the console have to be soooo wide.
My 4runner gets the same range.
So far I love my 2023 SOLTERRA.
Who would buy this Toyota when the Chevy Bolt EUV is a much better EV for thousands less and qualifies for the $7500 tax credit?
Well GM did discontinue the Bolt and given the limited number of these things…parts will be an issue down the road.
Because it’s already too late to buy a brand new Bolt.
@@webcomment8895 they're still shipping them to dealerships.
The bZ4X has inherited the (unwanted) mantle of "Worst new BEV for sale in America" from the ID.4. Congratulations, Toyota! 🙃
i enjoy mine
Fiskar has taken the crown. With the cheap lease deals on the solterra and bz4x these have climbed up a bit for leasing value.
Mesh fabric on the dashboard is a non-starter for me. Pun intended. Will be cruddy in no time and impossible to keep clean.
Toyota did dumb things like the mesh dashboard, weird cladding, odd instrument cluster and an infotainment system with buttons for volume etc that are meant to make it look modern and special, but are form over function. Or just ugly in some cases. But yeah, the dash is a real head scratcher.
@@peterfessier9780 No glovebox too! 😅
Toyota is on their way to becoming the Nokia of the auto industry.
That’s Ford 😂
Akio Toyoda was convinced consumers didn't want to buy evs and he made a car to prove his argument.
I believe this is exactly what happened. It may not even have been intentional. The executives may have looked at the specs and thought: Yeah that's exactly what we expected.
I think Toyota is now on Plan C for how to move "beyond" the busy forks. More than likely they will need a Plan D within another year or two. Hopefully it will be a good one.
Need a head to head Bolt comparison
This is Toyota proving the world isn’t ready for EVs by building a BEV people would hate. I drove the Solterra and I couldn’t get over that it was priced above $30,000.
Under powered, under batteried, totally underwhelming. I don’t understand how anyone other than Toyota fanbois could drive one and like it compared to an Ioniq 5, EV6, Ariya, Mach-E. It only compares almost equally to an Id.4.
I don't believe the Subaru higher ups are actually happy with the final product. They probably didn't have much say as the Solterra clearly comes thru as a Toyota product and not much Subaru at all.
@@niuhuskieguy I don’t see how they could be happy with it, but depending on Toyota for BEVs was their first mistake.
You guys are great together
Charging is the big weak point of the busy forks. AWD models can only do 100kW max, and FWD 150kW max, but neither get near their max speeds. They even have an apparent 90kWh DC charging limit, where once you hit that limit it will throttle speeds to around 40kW. Its AC charging isn't any better. It only has a 6kW onboard charger. Every other competing EV has 11kW standard.
I can see why they make the ding-ding sound when the vehicle is in reverse mode; some would have it in reserve and forget.
I am a huge Toyota fan....having said that, who in their right mind would buy this pile of crap??? The name is ridiculous as well. No glove box. The range is pathetic. I will keep burning gas.
Yes i go after what they namme The cars when i am in The marked to buy a new one.
Im liking my 2024 solterra limited so far.. $317 a month with 1k down, it has been a good replacement for my 2019 wrx. There are tons of premium features on the limited trim and as long as you have a second car in the household for trips.. It's not an issue that it charges slow or is range limited. My wife has been choosing it over her new 2024 Ascent onyx for her work commute.
I so wanted to buy the Toyota or Lexus EV…was disappointed with both. So I sold my soul and bought a Tesla Model 3 Performance (the deal was just that good)!
With the latest updates, october 2023, Japan mobility show, Toyota has solved all issues. Range is now 475km, as tested in the Netherlands. And cold weather charging improved considerably. It was testes with a few EV'S in the Netherlands, akso with Tesla's model Y. The bz4x was as efficient as the Tesla. Bz4x was considered the far bettet option above VW'S Id4 and Audi's Etron Q4.....
Another great review
Why are these boomers so grumpy about this thing? The design is brilliant. Easy access to the motors and maintenance components. The Teslas that come in to our shop are annoying and hard to repair by design.
And no glove box....who came up with that stupid idea. Open spaces at the bottom is definitely not the same thing
What's with car manufacturers trying to re-invent the wheel when it comes to gauge clusters?
At least the Busyforks is better than the Mazda MX 30?
The front end "bumper" is way oversized. Almost looks like this could be a mini-snow plow. No thanks.
Maybe its my background in aviation, where mixes of letters and numbers are common, but the name doesn't bother me in the slightest. Other things might, but the name is an odd thing to fixate on.
BZ4X is pronounced Bizforks. A perfectly acceptable name for this car! 😂
Busy for thee
Starts at 42k? The one shown is 50k? What are they smoking?
According to the chief marketing officer, "bz4x" means buzz for backup.
They need to finish painting it.
Another major issue is Toyota built in a limit of 2 DC fast charges per 24 hours. What this means is after 400-500 miles, you're limited to level 2 charging speeds.
Yup, they forgot to mention THAT.
Insanity
Oh and I found this out the hard way when it took me 23 hours to do a trip my gas car did in 9.5. When I took it into the dealership and Toyota's response was that I was "driving it wrong".
In Europe we have had a software update that increases that to……………. 3.8 fast charges if you also comply with the charging algorithm! Suggest you watch TeslaBjorn’s test drive of the updated software version. Be aware he also hasp has his usual series of videos for 1000 km drive, zero miles, headlights and Sunday driving the pre-updated software tests on his channel.
I recently chatted to a guy who has an All Wheel drive version in the UK and he loved it as he doesn’t do 250+ mile drives in a day but his car was in and out of the service bay because of huge problems with the driver assistance kit and non-stop bing bongs that even the service guys couldn’t fix………..
@@timoliver8940 oh I have. No sign of the update here in North America. Even the bz4x hotline doesn't know anything about it. Because the awd bz4x in North America has a different battery than in Europe, we're worried that we may never get it.
Lol, I thought you already did this. I am experiencing deja vu.
Less range & power and half the charging speed than I have: I don’t care if it’s even half the price I would not buy it‼️ I’m not grumpy but a happy owner of an IONIQ 5. 14:35
These guys went straight to the point ،charging battery issues plus price plus time you spend and wait to get charged plus 1 thing I tell you---> ether you must be 120cm tall or 180cm over to drive this car .some one like me i killed myself to bring it to the level that I see the front screen ,didn't work .basically the steering whel stoping you to see the front monitor.if U bring your seat up down doesnt work bring the wheel up and down doesn't work unless u bring a saw and get rid of the top of the wheel then you be able to read your front monitor screen😂😂😂.saw lol😂😂😂omg saw it .I can't belive Toyota makes such a big mistake .how in earth this design passed the standards ?😮.yet if you ask the dealer never tell U the truth delaers???haha no way . they don't tell U the truth they hide it man .they dont tell U that even u fully charge the car wont take u that far . don't buy that's it .
They have a 7500 rebate now until 10/3/2023 due to it doesn't qualify for Fed credit.
Don't forget the ionic 5 which is way better
After update; use in Norway in 15 cellsius FWD 390 km range on highway.

Way more misses than charging…
Nathan is a gem - “Built Zippy for Generation X” LOL
EVs do not need a frunk just because Teslas have one.
It's not just a car making Roman grumpy. There's gotta be something else besides 😂
According to Toyota, the meaning of the "bZ4X" nameplate breaks down into: "bZ": for "beyond Zero" emissions, representing the nature of a battery-electric vehicle by going "beyond Zero" emissions, "4": from the equivalent-sized Toyota RAV4 and the. "X": describing it as a compact crossover ('X') SUV.
Below Zero for the charging speeds
Unless it comes with its own solar panels, it's hardly "beyond zero." It's using the same fossil fuels for electricity that my house's HVAC uses. Isn't it funny that they claim people should buy EVs to save the planet, while telling us to turn up our thermostats in the Summer to do so?
Will Toyota adopt the NACS charging standard and take advantage of the tesla charging network
NO car needs a frunk.
Toyota have bought giga press, so the next thing they do is beat tesla on quality and price
Lmao I like grumpy Roman 😅
No comments on the most bizarre black fenders??
Toyota is not that dedicated in EVs They've already stated its a technology that's not quite ready for prime time. I think they made this car just to keep current.
You have to hate yourself to buy this over a tesla…
You can typically get the full $7500 off if you lease an EV, no matter the country of manufacture.
That care was 2 years late getting to market. They should have cancelled it.
You realize Gen X is like 45-60 right?
It's still hilarious to me how car review people complain about new knobs on the AC nowadays it's all automatic is set up the temperature I never even think about my temperature in my car I would not want knobs if you paid me
Not even sure if a Toyota loyalist will buy this car
Toyota never wanted to build BEV. I guess they have build this thing only to have BEV in range for EV fans. Yes we have BEV... but as I like Toyotas this one I wouldn't buy...
I think this is for loyal Toyota customers who assume it will be good because it’s a Toyota and haven’t researched any other EV’s. However, I can’t quite figure out how it helps Toyota to make such a mediocre EV. I do want them to make a better EV as I like Toyotas and I’m happy to have more good choices.
It helps them by adding to the list of EVs that don't actually suit the needs of the majority. Toyota doesn't want to make EVs. They know EVs are not a solution to anything and that they're mostly just status symbols for people with enough money to have multiple new vehicles. It benefits them, in the long run, for this EV nonsense to end, so they can focus on making the best hybrids on the market.
Toyota built this car to try to prove that full EVs were a bad idea. All they proved is that a Toyota EV is a bad idea.
I LIKE THESE TWO GUYS ALREADY
Log into your car, OOHHHH HELLLLL NOOOOOOOO!

This reminds me of when I had the whole weekend to do my homework, and didn't even look at it till 15 minutes before it was time to go to school on Monday.
The only way to buy a BZ4X is go fwd and still it’s underwhelming
These three cars are DOA
e-TNGA. Adapted TNGA to electric. Faster to market, with limitations. Toyota chose the wrong things to compromise on. “We made an EV!. Oh, we still have lots of EXCELLENT Hybrids, too ……”. Time to market: b. Capability: Z. New definition for ‘beyond ZERO, Roman!
It's crazy I own this and don't experience any of these problems and everybody just shits on my car.
And rightly so.

CLIFF NOTES VERSION with my comments on each item from this video!!..... I can't believe people are still complaining about the same old things... sure some of them may be legitimate for some people but over all many of those things aren't worth having a headache about... See my notes on EACH item below.
0) The name. ... GIVE ME A BREAK already... it is what it is... and its different than most out there... I like it, better than Nissan Kicks or Juke, or Volkswagen Toureg or Tiguan, seriously?
1) No frunk..... This is just stupid, seriously, how long have been driving ICE cars now? and many of the FRUNKS i've seen are the size of a glove box!
2) AWD (in North America) has a max charge speed of 100 kW and shorter range compared to the FWD, for more money....... Ya, ok, i give them this one, hopefully software updates will make this whole charge thing better.
3) Only 250 hp, with 6.5 sec 0-60, fast for a regular car, but slower for an EV....... uh, who cares? I didn't buy a sports car. I'm really tired of hearing this... Oh my car doesn't take off fast! whoopedy doo!
4) Half of the storage of a RAV4 in the back......... I can't verify this, but i'm pretty happy with the space i have! Way better than the Prius I had and still better than my Camry's and Avalon!
5) No rear wiper......... SOLVED THIS, in fact, they built it good in the first place, ... in most cases it does roll off... in slow city driving not so much... I had a Ceramic coating done and it just flies off! I would rather NOT having a wiper... I have had my daughters wiper on her Prius just get beat up in the winter and then car washes.
6) Toyota back-up beep........ SOLVED THIS, Its a programing thing, there is a medium difficult way you can do it yourself, or you can simply take it to the dealership, have them plug their computer into it and turn it off. DUH>.. stop complaining about this... learn the tech.
7) Piano black plastic will be covered with fingerprints and dust........ I have to agree with this one! I could not get my PPF people to cover it for me (since they deal with water and heat to get it on and get it to stay. Still trying to research some better ideas i can do on my own... I don't like the Carbon Fiber overlay things i've seen. I want to retain the black, just cover it to protect it!
8) No glove box........ NOT an issue. Over it, never got into my glove box when i had one!.. The books and my Registration and Insurance fit in the middle console under the tray, easy peasy.
9) Big center storage interferes with manspreading...... Um, OK.. Whatever... No comment. ... works fine for me!
10) Driver display position blocked by steering wheel unless the wheel is dropped down low......... This annoys me the complaints about this too... 99% of people driving these will have this figured out.... Steering wheel down... Seat UP! I'm 6'5", yes, that makes it perfect for me, but doing a little adjusting will make this easy to work with.
11) No climate control buttons....... People are so stuck on BUTTONS or Knobs. Ugh. There are Knobs and buttons for this by the way! learn the HVAC system and you got it down.
12) Not eligible for federal tax credits........ If you are smart, like me... ha ha ha... you have this figured out by now too! It takes extra work to get the Tax Credit.... First, the easiest, is to work with your dealership and set it up on a Lease... I'm actually hearing many are NOW figuring this out and offering it as a perk... Some dealerships still won't do it though... the Second way, the way i did it, was to purchase it through a business and have the business claim the credit and pass it on. (this is how Toyota dealerships are doing it, THEY purchase the car, then lease it to you!) I didn't want to lease, and at the time, they had no clue about it anyway.
Zzzzz
It's a shame Toyota put out such a crappy EV. I really hope they bring a solid state battery to market, cause they are going to need a miracle to catch up to others. Maybe a Tesla joint build collaboration? For the Japanese market?
Happy with mine
More accurate to say that this bZ4X was built by people who hate electric cars. Look at the impressive effort behind the latest Prius! Toyota wants to sell a boatload of them, and it shows! Look at the Mirai, which is a sexy, nice driving car let down by the fact that hydrogen fuel stations are nearly non-existent.
Toyota had to be dragged crying, kicking, and screaming to build this battery electric car. They built this car because they're being forced to. It's a compliance car. They put in just enough effort to get a passing grade, and nothing more.
This vehicle was definitely a situation of Toyota making getting an electric car just to say they have one. Severe afterthought
Your phone isn't charging because of your case? Yes and No. Try it on every car you test, you will find it charges on Hyundai Kia and many others.
i have one question for you though i know the answer. Do you know the cost of the battery? Take a wild guess
TFL complains so much about saftey and quality on the tesla videos. Things like doors not opening, and backing up being so quiet you will hit someone, or the shifter stalk needing literally ZERO effort for a baby to shift. Toyota went full safety into the opposite direction, and they complain.
Beyond Zero 4 Gen X ? Bz4X
45k for 220mile range ?? I’ll just buy a anything else
RANGE!!!
Range would be fine if it charged much faster. Stopping to recharge every couple of hours isn’t that bad if you only needed to stop for a few minutes instead of an hour.
Smaller battery saves not having to haul around lots of extra weight during the 95% of time the vehicle is used for local commuting.
