The bZ4X AWD, here in North America, has a slower max charging speed because Toyota put a slower CATL battery in, while the FWD, along with all the Lexus models, and every single bZ4X sold outside of North America got faster charging Panasonic batteries. I assume supply chain issues meant they could not source as many Panasonic batteries as they wanted, and knew that Europe and Asia wouldn't put up with this crap battery, so dumped it on North America, perhaps assuming we were too dumb to know what we are missing. They picked AWD because that's 80% of bZ4X sales here, so they could dump more of the crap batteries and save the good ones for their overpriced Lexus, and for Europe and Asia, since they have better infrastructure and are more likely to realize how bad the battery is compared to every other EV on the market today, including cheaper cars like the Bolt.

Pretty clearly a half-baked, rushed design. Toyota and Subaru saw the takeoff of EV sales, realized they had to have *something* to sell in that segment, and got something production-ready as quickly as they could. It's a stopgap effort to have something to offer their many brand loyalists so they don't leave the brands. They aren't making very many of them, indicating they don't expect them to really sell except maybe to people who are determined to stay in their brand families but yet want an EV.
Now that the market has Toyota's attention and they've publicly announced a 180 with regard to their plans to bring EVs to market, it will be interesting to see what their next models are like. Toyota remains a formidable engineering and manufacturing company. But that's probably MY 2025 or 2026 at the earliest.

Well Grumpus, I really like the bZ4x AWD. Let me start, it's electric.. I began this journey with a 2001 Prius Hybrid, then in 2019 a Prius Prime which allows 30 miles full electric. Favorite mode was that first 30 miles. Now the bZ4x which uses 8% to 15% of battery going 40 to 65 miles daily and trickle charges overnight to full charge. The only maintenance is tire rotation for 80,000 miles and I have a Toyota Dealer in town. It can get hot here in AZ and the battery has a dedicated cooling system. Battery warranty is 12 years. The AWD function is among the best you can buy, right? Now, if I could get an owners manual and a second FOB, both on order for months, I'd be set. Happy with my purchase so far.

Charging is the big weak point of the busy forks. AWD models can only do 100kW max, and FWD 150kW max, but neither get near their max speeds. They even have an apparent 90kWh DC charging limit, where once you hit that limit it will throttle speeds to around 40kW. Its AC charging isn't any better. It only has a 6kW onboard charger. I believe this is exactly what happened. It may not even have been intentional. The executives may have looked at the specs and thought: Yeah that's exactly what we expected.
I think Toyota is now on Plan C for how to move "beyond" the busy forks. More than likely they will need a Plan D within another year or two. Hopefully it will be a good one.

The thing I dislike about Tesla is that it encourages you to look at the dash tablet. I don't like taking my eyes off the road. OpenPilot makes sure you watch the road. AutoPilot, you have to watch the tablet for it to notify you to tug on the steering wheel. It's so stupid.

Suggest you watch TeslaBjorn’s test drive of the updated software version. It helps them by adding to the list of EVs that don't actually suit the needs of the majority. Toyota doesn't want to make EVs. They know EVs are not a solution to anything and that they're mostly just status symbols for people with enough money to have multiple new vehicles. It benefits them, in the long run, for this EV nonsense to end, so they can focus on making the best hybrids on the market.

More accurate to say that this bZ4X was built by people who hate electric cars. Look at the impressive effort behind the latest Prius! Toyota wants to sell a boatload of them, and it shows! Look at the Mirai, which is a sexy, nice driving car let down by the fact that hydrogen fuel stations are nearly non-existent.
Toyota had to be dragged crying, kicking, and screaming to build this battery electric car. They built this car because they're being forced to. It's a compliance car. They put in just enough effort to get a passing grade, and nothing more.
