    Sports are sacred, they always will be to many different cultures whether in the United States or across the globe, but over the last decade gaming has become strikingly similar. Both gather large audiences to watch, both are profitable and both require a certain skill level to be the best. League of Legends has become one of the most popular games to reach a “sport” level, bringing in millions of unique viewers and selling out arenas for tournaments.

    It doesn't matter if gaming is a sport or not. People like Ben - let's face it - are old (sorry Ben). And old people die (sorry Ben). And people who grew up playing video games, maybe even watching esports will take the places of old people like Ben who will eventually die (sorry Ben). And let's have this conversation then. What will the people who are like 6 years old today, say about this ... after they grew up watching the Dota 2 International or LoL Championship in the Staples Center in front of a million people audience, players competing for a multi million dollar prize pool.
    People are old. And something might come along after esports which I might not recognize as a sport. But it won't matter, because I'll be old and dead soon. Because dead people don't matter anymore.

    • @eddieaguilar2720
      @eddieaguilar2720 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** gaming is clearly not a sport because it sometimes does not involve physical activity exept maybe kinect and shit like that might but if it involves a controller then no.

    • @Krustenkaese92
      @Krustenkaese92 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eddie Aguilar I never said that it is a sport. I said that it won't matter in 20-30 years what people who didn't grew up with gaming think if it's a sport or not.
      The definition of sport is such a blurry line, as you've seen in that video and it doesn't matter what individual people define as a sport, it matters what the society and sport associations define as a sport. And esport has already been accepted in a number of universities and colleges as a sport scholarship and many schools will follow.
      Take the Dota 2 International of last year for example. It had a 11 million dollar prize pool (in comparison the US Open - a major Golf tournament - only awards 9 million). Over 10 thousand people assembled in a hall in Seattle, the tickets were sold out within an hour (tickets for the upcoming International in august were sold out in 5 minutes). It had literally millions of people watching online. You have your teams who are very skilled in this one game, know everything about it. It is even more so about reflexes and coordination and communication than in most other sports. And they are competing for this huge prize money.
      They don't work out their physical bodies than most other athletes do, I agree. But their brains run like a thousand miles per hour, every single second they play this game. They use their brains, not their bodies and it ultimately comes down to that.

    • @Krustenkaese92
      @Krustenkaese92 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eddie Aguilar First, I never said that I think it's a sport. Second, even if I did, why do mind me thinking that? Because it doesn't hurt you, you don't know me, why do you care and you can't do anything about it anyway. Third, it doesn't matter what I think. I don't hold any power over the definition of sport. I'm just a guy. And so are you.
      Society will have to make that decision and I think I know how that will turn out. Because, again, old people die^^

      @Xrayballer88 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ethan Kerwick Gaming requires enough physical preparation to deflate this argument. Gamers train like it is a full-time job (8+ hours per day) not just to increase strategy and mental preparation, but to increase click rate. Yes, serious gamers and gaming organizations track click rates. Your physical ability to get to correct button quicker than your opponent is as critical as a baserunners foot getting to the base before the throw.

    Ben I know you don't read these, but baseball is not popular among the general population. I promise you if you go to any MLB stadium during a game and conduct a survey that asks people how they got their tickets, you would find that the majority of people are there because they won them from a raffle or got them at their job. Nobody buys tickets to baseball games anymore because nobody cares enough! Japan and Latin America can have baseball, it fucking sucks.

      Smax Lab part of the reason guys our age prefer basketball and football is the appeal though, the hip-hop culture that comes with an NBA or NFL team is a huge draw... the NBA was nowhere near as popular as it is now and that is largely due to marketing the product to the right audience.

    Taking the word physical out of the definitions of 'Athlete' and 'Sport', encapsulates professional gamers. I don't think professional gaming should be called a sport, nor that gamers should be called an athlete. However gaming is not called a sport, it is an E-Sport. Gamers should be called E-athletes or something. Give them their own definition rather than comparing them to physical sports.

      Lyrical Productions your definition is too broad. People do lots of things when they are bored. I can name countless things that not sport and yet they'll fit your definition. plus your premise that sport is something you do becuase you have nothing better to do is clearly flawed. People can still play sports even if they have something better to do. I dont see how that is a necessity. Or even remotely relevant.

  • @wrightr
    @wrightr 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Aboslutely NOT a sport. I love myself some games, but the entire concept is in the name. It's a game. Sure, you can get paid for it if you're able to but tat doesn't qualify it as a sport. Have a league, have a volatile community, have teams--have whatever. It doesn't make it a sport. Cool, it's competitive, gaming is gaming. I get there are technical arguments in claiming that gaming is in fact, a sport but it's just not a sport.
    Ben made the best point when he likened it to politics. It's competitive, you get paid, some are better than others. Anyone who calls League of Legends or DOTA (whatever that is) a sport, is in serious denial of what they're doing. Is it so important for them to have what they do be called a sport to justify that gaming is in some way strenuous or takes some skill? Of course we all know it takes skill, no one is denying that. Go enjoy it, get paid, get famous (if that's even possible) from it. No one is taking that away, but why feel the need to try and classify something that is so obviously not a sport, as a sport? It really only brings sports fans and people with any sense of logic to have a good chuckle over that.
    Anyway, great conversation as always. I'm going to stop because I can go on and on and on about this, but then I'll just get a headache. People are going to believe they're playing a sport while staring at a screen, screaming at a virtual game, acting more intense than they ever should while playing a VIDEO game, no matter what others say.
    Now, I'm off to go play some MLB the Show. My contract states I need to play at least once a day.

    • @Variecs
      @Variecs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +W Wright people have serious mental problems here, and i'm not even trying to offend someone. The way you define wether something is related to specific term or not is my looking at the definition of that term and checking if this object fulfills this definition. And, believe it or not, it doesn't. The reason is that activity cannot be considered a sport if it requires some kind of instruments or equipment that cannot be provided by more than one company. And while computers surely can, the game itself is produced strictly by one company. At the same time, game isn't exactly a physical object, and somebody else can't make an identical game and claim it's their product, cause with software it doesn't work like that. So there's an argument for it being a sport. It's all very controversial and stuff, but my point is, that everyone, i mean EVERYONE discussing this topic and not supporting the idea of E-Sports being a sport didn't come even close to that way of thinking. All you can say is meaningless side notes of "you're just trying to justify something you do blablabla", or just going straight forward "calling professional gaming a sport is ridiculous, and only braindamaged retarded douchebag would do that". That's not exactly how the real conversation is meant to be. Get your shit together if you wanna have a real argument.

    Esports is real and its growing throughout the world. Other athletes are starting to recognize these players as pro athletes. Pro gamers actual pros, not your friend that claims hes the greatest thing since sliced cheese; they put in hours of practice to achieve greatness just like any athlete. Ben is just like any other main stream media reporter, say gaming is a sport and just watch them roll there eyes. Take games like Dota and League of Legends for example; the world championships that these games have bring in millions of views as wells as thousands of live attendees. League of Legends has held its events in places like Madison Square Garden , The Staples Center, Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, and Sangam Stadium a venue for the 2012 FIFA World Cup. Just because its not a physical display of skills does not take away from these games being a sport.

    It depends on what you concider a sport.
    Does the competitive nature define the sport?
    Does the preperation and Training?
    Does the audience?
    Does The athletic ability?
    if you think the first three points are enough, then gaming is a sport. Are they not? in that case it wouldnt be.

    I really think there needs to be several other categories that are sports-like, but are not sports.
    There needs to be a category that contain heavy physical activities that doesn't have rules, but still needs a well exercised body to be good at it - like rock climbing, casual swimming, solo skiing, etc. These activities can be played by yourself to get better and stronger, but not necessarily compete with others.
    There should be a category where multiple teams are competing for a same goal and involves physical activity - these category should contain what we traditionally consider sports. e.g. basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc.
    There should be a category where multiple teams/people complete for the same goal, but where there is limited physical activity - this is where gaming goes, along with billiards, bowling, and golf. People will get mad about this one, saying that the latter 3 still need proper form to execute properly and other b.s. but unless you are constantly on the edge (physically), you cannot go in the "traditional sport" category. The reason this category exists is because your mind/form is more important that your body structure. Both genders can play against each other unlike in a more physical sport like football.

      Rico Suave Not saying gaming is a sport but i don’t think you all Pro gamers kinda lazy or just kids that play video games. Professional
      gamers are healthy. It is in their contracts that they need to keep physically
      fit and keep a good diet for physiological purposes to become alert so they
      don't under perform. They spend up to 18 hours a day training to become
      basically amazing at their games, and they out make them basically imposable to beat.You should check out some starcraft players, the speed that they use the keyboard at is just amazing to watch. Most professional games use keyboards (besides COD which is the least popular one) and not controllers since the games are more advanced and need more keys for it to work.
      Some of these Gamers make Millions, I mean millions of dollars in
      championships, it’s crazy but it’s a massive scene. In places like Korea, there are TV stations dedicated to "E-Sports" and some games fill stadiums
      full of fans. I mean most Korean and Chinese out play almost all European and American teams because we don't support the gamers here and shun them a lot,which doesn't help them.
      Also a common misconception is that TH-camrs are 'pro gamers' but very, very few are. Most of them are just entertainers
      Once again I'm not saying that gaming is a sport, I haven't made my own
      mind up but I don’t think it’s fair to shun Pro gamers.If you want a better insight I suggest you watch a piece on Vice called “Esport”

    In order to get an insightful answer to this question you need people who are qualified to talk about this. A board of people who understand the nature of online video games and how huge esports is while also understanding the heritage and idea of classical sport. But here's the thing the answer doesn't matter, esports is growing at an unprecedented rate, the US government provides athletic visas to gamers, millions of people watch esports sometimes more people watch the championships of esports like league of legends than the championships of mainstream sports, and the industry is taking in millions every year while simultaneously gaining new investors in certain teams and games like Rick Fox the NBA player who created his own esports team and says esports is a sport, Shaq and Linkin Park also are investors.

    Yes it may have no physical but it for sure takes just as much and maybe some more mental ability
    And we all need mental ability in every sport
    Now i don't care about if it is a sport or not
    Did it need to be considered a sport? Yes so it helps the leagues in LOL for example.
    But the thing that drives me nuts is how people say there is no physical ability what so ever?
