I have owned several 2GM engines. If the engine has not been run for a week or so, I circulate the oil by cranking it on the starter for about 5 seconds with the decompression levers pulled.
Then, if it is a really cold day, with throttle closed, crank it again for about 5 seconds so that compression warms the cylinders. Sometimes it may fire, but not start. Not to worry, because the cylinders will have picked up a little more heat.
Then about half throttle and, keeping one hand on the throttle, I crank it until it fires, and as the RPM come up, pull the throttle back to no more than a fast idle, about 1000 to 1100 RPM.
Allowing the engine to race to high RPM from a cold start (or any start) can’t be good.
I never let the engine idle for long periods. A five minute warm up and run down is plenty. I usually run it about 2200 to 2600 RPM.
    Lovely, simple and reliable engines.

Brilliant engines, I have one on my Hurley 24 which fires up with almost no throttle from cold within about 3 seconds and will chug along all day using virtually no fuel.

I'd put one of these in a 14 ft dory and off I'd go happily puttering around. I'd even name my boat "Puttaputta" to reflect the engine sound 😀

Is it doing anything I can hardly hear it

Completely normal, no glow plugs so takes much longer in the cold to start. Some people start with the compression lever up and then drop it 5secs into starting to help warm things up a bit and reduce strain on batteries.

They are pretty solid engines. You just have to watch the hi pressure oil lines under the water pump don't corrode through.

@@RichardBrocklesby101 Mine are synthetic now as originals went bad. Had a hydraulic company make them up.

I may try that with mine, there's no way in hell you,d be able to hand start it tho from cold!

I used to regularly start the bukh20 on my dad's boat and when cold that thing would crank for what felt like an eternity.

Hi I see you have a filter in the top left as well as underneath. What is the top left filter connected to and what is it for?
I have bought a sailboat and see that the diesel is operated without the filter at the top left connected. Am just trying to figure out if I should connect it or leave it alone.

Hi, yes, it's common practice to fit that primary fuel filter. It's a more course filter than the main engine filter.... Belt and braces

@@RichardBrocklesby101 thanks! What is the best way to keep water from getting into the engine? My 1gm10 has very low hours and was working fantastic but it smokes now when I rev it high which it never did, am thinking I have water in my system.

@@TTTT-rc4fv I'm not an expert... but... what colour is the smoke? White/ blue/ black? Which could be water vapour/ oil/ bad injection.
You should have a water trap fuel filter as a primary fuel filter.
Also, check your exhaust elbow. Is it clogged?

What is your size and whether the engine is adequate for the hull speed.

the boat was 26ft snapdragon. The 1GM10 has about 10 hp and was penty to push the boat along at 4knots at about 1800rpm.

Mine likes, full throttle and let her run for about 30 seconds before easing off the throttle.
