How many hours have you run the engine? What year model? In what kind of water you sail, (salt concentration percentage, temperature, dirtyness)?

Any idea what the required 'torque' is?

I found this yanmar manual, www.yanmar.nl/theme/yanmarportal/uploadedFiles/Marine/productDownloads/Pleasure-operation-manual/1GM10-OM/1GM10_OPERATION-MANUAL_en.pdf check page 50, there’s a table with the correct torque

Do I have to worry about any water coming from the water hose when I remove it? Should I close the raw water intake seacock first? The water hose from my exhaust riser goes to an anti-syphon valve

I would close the raw water seacock as a precaution when working on the engine, but shouldn't be a problem at the exhaust elbow.

Is it also possible to just run the motor at high speed and load for a while to clean all that stuff out of there?

No. Tried that before. I just removed mine for inspection and it wasn’t clean… Glad it was still okay and not leaking though.

You can 'eyeball' the fitting, but what you should also do is to fill the outer tube with water, blocking off the engine water discharge pipe with your finger and you'll soon see if there's a leak around the inner tube or the flange. Been there, thrown mine away, LOL!

This is an essential tip! It’s also mentioned in the 1GM10 exhaust elbow article on the practical boat owner website (google it). I just inspected mine and I’m very glad its still okay and not leaking! Now I only need a new gasket.

Just bin the horrible thing and buy an American Made pattern part made from 316 stainless. These stainless elbows cost no more than the OEM Achilles heel design. The cost is about £100 post paid to the UK. Most sailors will regard this as a fantastic bargain if it prevents their engine from being destroyed by seawater in the cylinder.

£100 is way better than UK prices. Any recommendations for east coats USA suppliers ?

Bear in mind that with a lump of stainless bolted onto a cast iron object in a salt water environment may cause the anode to wear faster.
