Once perfected I’m sure it will be sapphire without the oxide (see the ingenuity comes from the curves of the glass) all sapphire watches don’t have curved sapphire glass on them it’s flat I’ve never seen it before and I can only imagine once this is perfected what could happen to all watches (my dad is a jeweller he showed me differences between fake watches imitation and other neat stuff)

I recently switched from the steel/sapphire AW2 (after 4 years of banging it on everything in an industrial setting) to an Aluminum AW5. 3 months later, my screen has 2 deep scratches on it already. Sapphire was definitely worth it for me. At this rate, my new three month old watch will be unusable within a year.

The current 1.5m views probably netted him somewhere around ~$1500, which barely covers the cost of the watches and he doesn't sell the stuff he tests. That said, he's still very successful and he doesn't necessarily need to worry about a momentary drop in profit.

I think the apple watch might be using a layer of antireflective coating on the sapphire crystal that might be scratching. That would explain why the level 6 and 7 scratches both look similarly deep. Watch brands like omega do this as well.

Interesting. I’m pretty rough on watches. My base Apple watches always scratched. My current Apple 4 watch is sapphire and 0 scratches to date (although I recently dropped the watch on a tile floor and chipped the screen). I do agree that scratching the Tissot was more of a crime than the Apple Watch.

Even OnePlus managed o put pure sapphire on their budget smartphone last year (on the OnePlus 3T) and Apple is cheap enough to not put it on their extremely expensive watch. Congrats, Apple!

It is a blend of sapphire and other stuff. Notice how when the watch did scratch, it was hardly visible, compared to scratching a glass screen at level 6.
It's not like real sapphire this size would be that expensive either, it can even be found on lower end watches (the real ones, not smart watches) . Pure margin fishing with knock offs.

I cant tell if its „impure“ sapphire or if Apple is Cost Cutting in their production. What i do know tho is that i have been buying the Stainless Steel Version of the Apple Watch since Series 2 all the way upto Series 5 and i have never ever broken or scratched the Watches Display ever. Dropped them a million times but nothing happened. I have got 2 Sport Apple Watches too whoch i both broke in less then a month of buying. So real-life-performance of the sapphire is brilliant and you wouldnt be able to scratch it regardless what you do to it!
