my samsung J5 2 years ago dies without any crack on screen, this happen also to 3 another friends that have the same Samsung. it was a problem with the LCD that isn't quality as the glass. ------- I think apple can improve the LCD and they will make the most indestructible ever.
That's because the screen actually cracked beneath the cover glass. Happens pretty often with OLED (I'm working at phone repair service/shop and I've seen a lot of these)
Yeah , i have a series 5 titanium and after 3 years the screen still looks new, it’s worth paying extra and not caring that much that you’ll scratch the screen and imo I don’t like adding screen protector or cases to my watch
Yes, this is exactly what I was waiting for. Now I can wear this ultra watch knowing it’s durable and not being afraid it will scratch or is going to be destroyed with normal use. Thank you!
Thank you for your scientific contributions. While I could never commit to such a move, someone needed to for us to know. Very glad to know my ultra will withstand all my normie type of moments of accidentally hitting shelves, walls, doors, etc. This thing will eat that like a champ.
Nice to see more a durability test that isn’t just smashing it with a hammer or using a tool to damage it (which have never correlated to my damage experiences irl). And here I was worried that it would scratch on door handles and gym equipment like all of my other Apple Watches.
I’ve been using the ultra for 2 full days and the battery % is at 48% 😮. I was shocked. I am going hiking this weekend so after seeing this ridiculousness I am convinced this is a prime investment! Thank you for sharing this!!!
Incredible job on this video! This is genuinely the only durability test that I have ever enjoyed! It might not have been the most scientific one but the most entertaining one for sure! But at the same time it was also some more realistic scenarios sorta, since normally you wouldn’t be sitting there scratching it with a pick. Seeing that series 8 did physically and emotionally hurt me tho.
I would love to know if Apple used a different sapphire crystal on the Ultra compared to the Series 8. Crazy durability for the Ultra. Durability is why I have gone with stainless steel Apple Watches since the Series 2. The ion X glass doesn’t even compare to the sapphire. Well worth the extra money in my opinion. And with the Ultra this year, Apple is offering a great value. Some people say Garmin has nothing to worry about, that’s what Blackerry thought when the iPhone came out in 2007 😊 I would never pay $999 for a watch with a terrible user interface just to get 30 day battery life!
It's probably a combination of engineering and glass. It's like physics of adding beams into concrete. Concrete can absorb one type of force and steal another, but together they mitigate both. the lip around the glass and frame combined with glass is key to spreadng impact across a larger area and avoiding any singular impact point being more destructive.
I’ve had the Sapphire Crystal on the series 4 for 4 years and I use it at work; industrial construction and it looks brand new still!! I did up grade to the ultra though. If Apple didn’t make this one, I would have gotten an Epix. Thanks for the video!!!

Note: this is a comparison between the 'glass' standard Apple Watch series 8, and the Ultra, which is sapphire. I've always bought sapphire Apple watches since 2015, never a scratch on the display not even once. Sapphire / Stainless steel is always worth the extra $$ especially if you'll keep it for multiple years as I do. Ultra is great value, being only a little more expensive than the stainless steel / sapphire version of Apple Watch 8.
I have a "Series 0" steel/sapphire Apple Watch, and I actually got a bunch of what looks like scratches on the display. I'm almost certain it's the anti-glare/anti-reflective coating being scratched, and not the sapphire itself, but it still looks bad. I'm honestly surprised your 2015 Apple Watch has no visible "scratches" on the display. I was so disappointed in how the sapphire screen ended up looking that for my next Apple Watch (Series 4), I just got the aluminum/ion-x glass version (which also, not surprisingly gets scuffed up pretty bad). I'm glad it seems like Apple is no longer putting that coating on the Ultra's sapphire. For context, this is a thing with non-smart watches as well. As an example, Omega often puts AR (anti reflective) coatings on both the underside & top of their sapphire crystals, and as such, they do get scuffed up pretty easily (lots of reports/videos online about this). I’ve always had screen protectors on mine but I’ve found that hitting them on any kind of metal corner or bolt while working on something in an engine bay or around equipment will spiderweb them even with fairly minimal force, it would be interesting to see if the ultras screen can withstand that, seeing as the durability is 99% of why I bought one. In no means will I be going through this kind of durability test on the watch with my line of work, but it gives me peace of mind. I just hope the battery will last as long as the watch lol.
This test has convinced me that your wrist will shatter long before this watch will ever break. Especially since your wrist absorbs some of the shock and your arm can’t move as fast as whipping it by the strap like you did. Even off your wrist, an ordinary drop onto tile or cement won’t do it. Amazing!
Since the Apple Watch Series 3 I’ve always gone with the aluminium model but every time it’s either scratched up badly dented because bumped it into walls and doors So I’ve decided to get the Apple Watch ultra ultra because of the strongest sapphire crystal display
Hurts to watch this but really good to know about the Ultra durability. I just tried one on at the Store (even though they’re sold out) but I was shocked how good it fit even though I have smaller wrists and currently rocking a 45mm Series 7. Also seems I’m a M on the Alpine Loop.
I’ve been wearing a series 7 45mm for a good while now and when the ultra got announced I wasn’t that into it. Just kinda like “that’s pretty badass for athletes, I bet marques will love it” but the more I watch videos on it the more I kinda want to buy one lol.
Im a watchmaker and if you do that to a Rolex it’s going to be destroyed and it’s worthless, because dents on Rolexes are no bueno, and Rolex is the toughest of all high end luxury watches.
I'm imagining you trying to return this using AppleCare. All I can picture are guys looking at this and going "WTF did you do? Fall off of a mountain and hit every rockon the way down???"
I had the same observation almost immediately. The sapphire glass wasn’t advertised to have been strengthened since the first Apple Watch. The Ultra seems to have the same glass as the stainless steel series 5 on my wrist and series zero in my drawer. That said, I’d still bank on the ultra’s display being a bit more durable because it sits flat instead of curved like the Series Stainless Steel displays.
Good observation. I don't think it would've done much though. The curving class on the series 8 is supposed to be more durable than the series 4 design. I highly doubt that is the case. The curving class on the 8 makes it so the casing around it probably wouldn't do much to the watch.
@@mathmanchris666 that is not what we meant. The watch that comes with the stainless steel case has the same sapphire crystal screen as the ultra and as the previous titanium models. Meanwhile, people usually scratch up the aluminum model's screen near instantly.
I have done that and put a screen protector on it, I know the screen is seemingly almost indestructible, but knowing my luck I would get the Ultra that cracks 😂 The case I brought looks really nice on the watch and stopped me worrying about scraping it across a wall whilst I’m out on a photography trip, whilst I’m doing that I often drag my watch on walls without knowing it.
You need to get into an altercation with somebody who is engaged, because you essentially need diamond to scratch sapphire glass. The design of the ultra however seems to protect it from shattering, unlike the SS versions of the AW8 which also have sapphire glass but they are more rounded and exposed.
I wish you guys had tested against the stainless steel Apple Watch too to see if it’s the shapes of the ultra or the sapphire that’s doing most of the work in preventing scratches.
Guy: Bro, what happened to your Ultra, the screen has some dead pixels! The watch owner: Oh, you see, I... 1. Dropped it down Mount Everest 2. Ran over it with a truck, 3. Scratched the screen with diamonds, 4. Dropped it from a boat and Just brushed the screen to get rid of the scratches.
You’re telling me my order is on back order while people out here trynna break em…lmao just messing but sucks I gotta wait, I’ll enjoy watching them get crushed before it crushes my wallet 😬
This watch is totally worth the $1099 CAD price tag! I almost feel stupid getting Apple Care+ for it but you never know! I didn’t even use my AC+ on my Series 6.
I shattered my first generation Apple Watch 2015 wearing it on my left wrist smashing with a badminton racket holding with my right hand. So a hammer is a reasonable test because any racket whip has a similar if not more energy generated on impact. The screen was completely shattered with sharp pieces that can cut you worse than your test for series 8 at 06:58. I haven’t bought another smart watch ever since. I am though considering to buy the Ultra and this video has given me confidence in wearing it on my left wrist at badminton. Cheers!
Okay hear me out, for years i always get upset when i scratch my devices, my iPhone and apple watches always bother me when i (inevitably) damage them, but my ultra actually took a fall, and has a small scratch on the titanium, and i can honestly say that i kinda like the way the damage looks on the device, whenever i see the scratch on the titanium it reminds me worn jewelry, it doesn’t look bad with damage compared to the other watches, my sapphire glass is completely without scratches, this is a very VERY impressive device
Random question.. So after this release if you could only buy one.. Would you upgrade from a IWatch 5 to an Ultra OR from a IPhone 11 Pro Max to IPhone 14 Pro Max? Both older versions still work fine, no damage. I’m leaning toward the Ultra and waiting for IPhone 15. Thanks

The design of the ultra however seems to protect it from shattering, unlike the SS versions of the AW8 which also have sapphire glass but they are more rounded and exposed.
I feel like he did it harder with the regular 8 lol
I wish you guys had tested against the stainless steel Apple Watch too to see if it’s the shapes of the ultra or the sapphire that’s doing most of the work in preventing scratches.
Well, no Apple Care this year for me :)
I was so anxious when you were smacking it on the wall, pole and the rock.
Amazing durability review and hitting it for us. 🙌🏻
Man I love the ultra ❤⌚️
Keep this content up. This may be the best video advertisement for the Apple Watch Ultra
I’m afraid to buy the watch for getting a scratch on it. My man is literally dragging the watch around. 😂
That proves that it’s built to last
@@abbystephens9766 you’re 100% correct.
Like Apollo in Rocky IV. Ultra watch faded out before breaking.
You smashed the series 8 harder then the ultra
This video litrally persuaded me to sell my series 8 and get the ultra
Nokia 3310.. we have a contender here
Part 1: Washing apple watches with gravel and rocks.
Guy: Bro, what happened to your Ultra, the screen has some dead pixels!
The watch owner: Oh, you see, I...
1. Dropped it down Mount Everest
2. Ran over it with a truck,
3. Scratched the screen with diamonds,
4. Dropped it from a boat
and
Just brushed the screen to get rid of the scratches.
I’ve liked this video and subscribed, because you deserve it 😳
You’re telling me my order is on back order while people out here trynna break em…lmao just messing but sucks I gotta wait, I’ll enjoy watching them get crushed before it crushes my wallet 😬
A little Emory Cloth on that Ultra case and it will be good to go! …until part 3… That was a really impressive demonstration of the durability!
One of your best videos, this was soo informative, great job 🎉
This watch is totally worth the $1099 CAD price tag! I almost feel stupid getting Apple Care+ for it but you never know! I didn’t even use my AC+ on my Series 6.
Great test. Subscribed!
Thanks for this review! This was the best I’ve seen
THANK YOU FOR DOING WHAT IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO DO SINCE I PURCHASED THE AWU. Now I can rest 😅
Cheers!
This hurts to watch, I just skipped to the result
Okay hear me out, for years i always get upset when i scratch my devices, my iPhone and apple watches always bother me when i (inevitably) damage them, but my ultra actually took a fall, and has a small scratch on the titanium, and i can honestly say that i kinda like the way the damage looks on the device, whenever i see the scratch on the titanium it reminds me worn jewelry, it doesn’t look bad with damage compared to the other watches, my sapphire glass is completely without scratches, this is a very VERY impressive device
Amazing video idea and really well edited, keep it up ❤
thats the video ive been waiting for
Random question.. Thanks
Yup get the watch and wait for possible USB-C iPhone next year
