That's an excellent point about discussing old whiskies. It really is more difficult but if you're with the right people it makes for great conversation.
A thing of beauty indeed. Waited to watch this video, so I could dram along. Wasn't surprised that we are on the same page when it comes to this bottle (or Campbelton in general). Slainte!
Longrow has always been on the radar but yet out of reach. This is certainly making me want to keep the hunt going and with the Ledaig. Top video fella.
As always, Jim, excellent notes! Shame that it can be so hard to find. Probably one of very few €120 -€140 18 yo whiskies out there that are worth that price tag. Cheers
Jim, as U2 once sang, 'You got stuck in a moment, and you can't get out of it.' Sounds amazing. It's seldom that I see you lost for words, just enjoying the moment and making affirming grunting sounds. :) Great juice. Learning lots from you (& Big Al!). :)
I'm sorry, Jim, but you were very subtle about how your feel about the Longrow 18. I wasn't sure if you like this one... ;>) It is so fun to watch a review when you LOVE the whisky. This is a tough one to get, and pretty expensive in the USA at $250+. I think you are right that older whiskies do have a more integrated profile and I find it hard to pick out notes. I guess that is my excuse to spend more time sipping them. Thanks for a great series, Jim.
Thank you Bud. Yeah I could imagine this one's a bit pricey in the US considering its price tag here (when available). I thought I hid my thoughts/views on this one quite well 😄😄. As I said...I won't find much to complain about this series 😉 Cheers my friend.
It's like looking in a mirror watching you enjoy this whisky. Sweet, sweet Springbank. I can only get the NAS Longrow which I love for the slap in the face with an oily rag. I assume you've had that. Is there any comparison?
Great whisky deserves great review and this is as usual. Question might pop up: will this whisky taste different in a somewhat colder environment 😊 (I know the answer: it does). Thanks again for another enjoyable review, Jim. Slàinte mhath
Hadn't thought about that Frank but yeah, I could see how this would taste different. Must remember to try that when the colder air comes in later in the year. Thank you. Slàinte my friend.
Cheers Alan. For me, Springbank manage to smoke their malt in such a way as to play it down. Yes, the standard Longrow falls more within the "peated whiskies as we know them" bracket but, as far as I can tell, in most other Longrow expressions...peat and or smoke, is just another flavour. Worth a longer look mate. Thanks buddy.
Subtlety is a great word for this. Had a 2019 and it's wonderful. Have a 4oz sample put away that I want to try when after opening a Springbank 15 bottle I have. From memory this reminded me a lot of SB15 so looking forward to doing a side by side. Cheers
@@WhiskeyNovice Yes I thought from memory that this is like the SB15 but a bit richer from the extra years with just a touch more peat. Im fact was expecting more peat but this is rich and integrated with what seemed to me more SB level?
Great review, Jim, and nice preaching about letting time to the labour of love from J & A Mitchell staff to express itself...I notice your bottle/batch is way darker than mine (first one, 2008, best one I tried) so I take they did "up the game Sherry casks" content wise (my guess for mine is a mix of Bourbon & Rum casks but I might be wrong), and also the 2 others I tried so far (2011, not my fav, 2017 or 2019, not sure, beautiful one, but clearer than yours). This distillery is definitively fascinating indeed...Cheers my friend ! 🥃
Cheers Greg. This is a bottle that will (most likely) sit in my collection for a long time so I hope to compare it with later versions as they come along.
Love this review Jim and have stayed away from Longrow so far since I mistakenly thought it would be too peated for me. The subtlety of this 18 year sounds very nice and if I happen to see it somewhere will definitely keep it in mind, as I could really tell how much you enjoyed this whisky! If I am successful in getting one, I will be happy to report back whether it tastes better in our triple digit heat in AZ :)
Please do Drew. I genuinely never would have thought about temperature changing the experience so much but...makes sense I suppose. If you do see one, I'd definately recommend it. Cheers my friend.
The only Longrow I've had is the entry level 'Longrow Peated'. It was as good an NAS whisky as I've had to date for £40. I also love the Hazelburn 10 which drinks like a dream. I will always buy good Campbeltown if it's available, great review as always Jim.
Cheers buddy. I tried tbe classic Longrow again when doing the tasting notes for this and had forgotten how good it was. Simply put...Springbank make incredible whisky.
@@WhiskeyNovice very generous of you Jim nice one, I've got something arriving this week you maybe interested in so will send a sample your way. Cheers

Great to see you enjoy this one so much. I cannot find any Springbank here in Calgary, but when I do, I will be buying based on your reviews.

Great comparison. Very helpful

Cheers Jeff. Definately worth a punt mate.
Great review. Thanks for sharing your notes and certainly sounded like an amazing experience!

Cheers Menno. Yeah this one I just came across by accident. Didn't stand and think about...it was a case of "I'll be having that, thank you!"

Love the 18y actually prefer it over the 21y😋
Yet to have the 21 Rikard but I look forward to trying it someday. Cheers buddy.

You'd instantly know they were from the same family Jimmy but, at 18, it's less a slap, and more a passionate caress 😉
Cheers buddy.

Great job as usual Jim... I have not had a lot to do with Longrow... Think is a peated thing maybe... Someday though... Cheers fella....
We are absolutely no where near Islay. This dram is so dense with flavors that the peat is just one small portion of the blend.

Haven't actually tried this side by side with the SB15 Tim. Must do so. If memory serves...I'd say this 18 has the edge over that SB15.
Cheers mate.
