The biggest crayfish nest I have ever seen!

- It's Sunday afternoon and I've heard that the west coast has gone flat - A rare occurrence during winter.
I load up the Jeep with the dive gear and my daughter Nano joins me for a drive around the reef to check it out.
We find flat calm conditions and upon entering the water find that the place is alive with lots of delicious seafood.
The catch bag is soon being filled with Paua, Crayfish and Kina...

Good stuff Kerry, not a sight you get to see too often. Great to see good practice around leaving the larger males. Can be hard to resist at times but the smaller generally taste better anyway and the big boys keep the population healthy.
Yep from what I understand its the big males that can fight off the predators and they help to protect the smaller crayfish in the group...Cheers!!!
I love the fact that you returned the big cray, I'm thinking that your conservation minded in how you harvest from the sea, you harvest what you need, truly a blessing....safe dives & God Bless!

Used to spend my spare time in the water summer or winter any time the water was right to free dive, to explore or kai for someone's tangi.
Haven't been diving since moving away from the East Coast.

Home sweet home, I really enjoyed this video as covid hasn’t allowed me to travel home as often as i usually do. So thank you for taking me on around home good to see that the kaimoana is still plentiful and the spots are still nice and healthy.

Good to hear them called by their proper name and not lobster. Crays in numbers like this are often seen in Torres Strait of Australia as well. Sometimes they often cover an entire bommie.

Yes, from time to time you do see some good sharks, most of the time they are just Bronze Whalers, and they are more interested in the fish that you have than you, we only really have to worry about Great Whites and they are not common at all...Cheers!!!

Yes I do but the vast majority of sharks in NZ will only want to eat the fish you have and do not see you as food, the only ones that I worry about are great whites and I have only seen one in all the years I have been diving! Cheers!!!
Must be NZ! Nowhere else is so quiet, has such bad roads and lets you drive on the Beaches.......
PS. Crayfish are the most under-rated of all the large Shell-Fish, delicious and easy to cook!
PPS. It's great to see so many Paua! I saw a documentary a few years ago about how they were being over-fished to the point of endangered species!
