    You know, I didn't really explain exactly what cost $2,200. That was the sculpting, cutting/keying, and printing fee for the model that I'm painting. Now you know! Admittedly, the cutting and keying was not needed because we're not reproducing the model but here we are :)

So many hours, around 3k games, my whole University life, so many friends met there and one of the most challenging games that require lightning fast reflexes and tactics. Thanks for bringing back all those memories. What I wouldn't give for a model like that of Sand Wraith.

    My two best friends and I met in college, working at the cafeteria. We started playing Starcraft together in the computer labs at night. No chat rooms or texting for us. We sat side by side, and being able to communicate that way allowed us to kick butt on a regular basis. Now, 20 years later, one lives in Utah, one moved to Texas, and I ended up in Idaho. But we still get together online and kick butt, in Starcraft II or War Thunder. Yeah, as starving college students, the games cost a lot, but the memories and camaraderie that come from it are priceless.

    It’s a little frustrating to see people in the comments undervaluing artists as well as not understanding the entire process. It’s like they think digital sculpting is magic or something where we just wave our pens at the screen and presto a fully sculpted detailed, printed, and fabricated piece just appears. How much would you pay a sculptor for a unique art piece in your house?

    • @ZigealFaust
      @ZigealFaust 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah. As someone that makes miniatures from sphere to final print myself, this was a dumb purchase.
      The lack of skill from just seeing the guy using Zbrush for 10 seconds was more than enough.
      It's not undervaluing, this was a very stupid purchase.
      Again, I do this for a living and would never charge above $200 for that quality of model.
      Maybe you are overestimating the value of subpar art.

      @@ZigealFaust I wasn’t even talking about this individual model and don’t want to disparage the artist buuuut since you brought it there really, $200 for a model? What do you only spend 8-10 hours and call it a day for your commissions? Clearly he liked this artist and he’s paying for his time, discussing and having a back and forth on the sculpt, keying, sculpting alternate options/ possibilities and everything else. The artist said the cost was about 1,200(which for a standard 40 hours of work would be around 30$/h which is pretty middle of the road) and the rest was production and handled by a third party. Additionally judging the guys sculpting ability on the part clearly just recorded after he’s already done with the sculpt is absolutely ridiculous and a complete dick move. And what the fuck are you talking about starting from a sphere, that’s assumed when you’re doing a commission that it’s all your work from the ground up and it’s nothing to brag about. $200 for a commission is either seriously undervaluing your time or indicating that you don’t spend much time on it to begin with. My comment was general and applying to people undervaluing all digital sculpts and commission work in the comments but damn kid your attitude just pisses me off. Disparaging another artists work when it’s exactly what the client wanted is ridiculous and just a major dick move. $30/hr for 40 hours is fairly standard so don’t pull other artist down to your level and don’t disparage other artists based on a 10 second comedic clip. Honestly the fact that you failed to recognize that he wasn’t seriously sculpting in that clip really makes me question your credibility, he literally just used the move brush to drag the mouth into a joker-esk smile, you’d have to be brain dead to think that’s a measure of his sculpting ability

      @@NotSoMax Calm down clown. Look up Lemurfeature. Look at the comm prices.
      I most certainly do better work for FAIR prices. No one is devaluing the art, the fact is its value should be massively lower than what was paid. Also my skillset has been trained for speed and effieciency, you sound like a moron thinking less time spent = worse quallity. There are people that take 30 mins to just draw a stickfigure, I'm not going to pay them MORE just because they are slow, lmfao.
      EDIT: I feel the need to mention that the models are rigged allowing for the purchaser to pose their char as often as they want for different printing poses. Unlike the model presented in this video.

      @@ZigealFaust I cannot be calmed! In all seriousness I could see an argument that this model could be cheaper but not $200. With a character with really clear reference, a simple pose, you could have something of a similar quality in 8-10 hours if you aren’t talking with the client, and maybe another 10 hours for finishing keying and as you suggested rigging, working through a third party it’s likely they take a percentage of the cut so the artist likely works for a higher rate to compensate but I’m not sure what I’d do with that extra 20 hours (since you aren’t dealing with uvs and texturing)? I could see an argument for 800 or 600 but probably not 200. What really rubbed me the wrong way was that 10 seconds of messing around in Zbrush showed that he wasn’t skilled. That comment was just absurd to me I’ve seen really talented sculptors do some dumb, slow, or just unorthodox stuff when you watch their sculpting process, so to take a 10 second segment recorded after the model was basically already done and say it’s an indication of skill just bothers me. I have thought about it more and I just don’t know where I’d spend 20 more hours of work on this model so I’m inclined to think he does just work slower but I feel if that is discussed early in the commission ie. “This is how long it’ll take me so sculpt something of x quality” I don’t really find much issue with that. I think 1200 is a reasonable rate for a commission but I also don’t think it’s what I’d go with if I was sculpting something like this. Then again I feel if I was commissioned by miniac I might work a bit slower than usual because of the pressure so it doesn’t seem super unusual. Also I feel like proper rigging for such an organic miniature almost works against you for some like this because there is so little armor sculpting in pose just makes more sense IMO, that way your anatomy doesn’t get slightly warped by a simple rig. You could sculpt the model, rig it, have the client pose it, then resculpt details and anatomy for a clean finial result but that’d be even more time when you could just sculpt in pose. Plus keying and the like often takes more time than you’d like especially if you’re considering seam lines, print orientation and easy of casting. 200 just seems too low for all that and the time investment. I’m not sure what your work flow is but for me I wouldn’t feel comfortable sending a commission off to a client after I just got a “good sculpt done” there’s a lot of extra work I’d want to do for fabrication that’d take up a lot more time than the initial sculpt. Anyone could knock out a half decent person in a few hours and have something you “could” print in about 10-12 hours but if you want everything to look really crisp, fabricate cleanly, and be easy to assemble you(or at least I) have to put in that extra time to make sure it’s polished enough to be sent off for fabrication. Maybe you’re arguing for just the initial sculpt it’s self and have a low rate in which case I can see that argument, or if you’re making something multiple people will buy so you can price it lower but for a single one off commission at this scale 200 just feels way too low IMO. Also by definition less time does equal less quality regardless of skill level, the more time you end up spending on any one piece the better the final product is, you can have something presentable fairly fast but you can always take your sculpts further. Working fast or slow doesn’t matter because regardless something you spent 10 hours on should be better than something you spent 10 minutes on. Assuming otherwise is just complete nonsense.

    I think this paint job will be very hard to top. This model is one you put a lot of work into and it shows. Of course you want to do a $2200 mini justice by giving it your all, but the sculpt is literally tied to years worth of memories you have with your friends. I can tell that those memories went into every brush stroke you put on the model and damn that cloth/leather looks fine!
    You want to win a golden demon, slayer sword, or crystal brush you now have that secret sauce. Nostalgia is your painting mojo.
