Great tips! One I haven’t seen is the “yoga knee pad.” It’s a small 24”x10”x5/8” thick yoga mat I put on the table and it keeps my elbows from getting sore on the hard table after hours of painting. Give it a shot :)
speaking of using your wife's yoga gear ;) is grabbing her scented oil mister. The soggy plume while you're supergluing fiddly parts will activate the curing process faster when you hold the figure over it. Bonus lavender posh stink for painting purples.
Foam nail files are the end of the sanding conversation (ok sanding sticks too), if you let the glob of Museum Wax sit out for 5-10 minutes before use it will leave less residue. You can add paint to the UHU glue before using it if you want translucent slime or blood. Michaels Crafts and Amazon carry Golden Paints, Squidmar tested them recently.
As someone that started with traditional art and then got into the hobby, it always confuses me out for a second to hear golden products described as cheap. Then i remember how absurd most miniature paint is ppv.
As someone that works in the industrial coatings world I'm always amazed at how expensive mini paint is. $5/.4oz? That's $1,500 for a gallon of paint! I've worked with paints that are designed to withstand ongoing fission or submerged permanently in human waste that cost less.
@@philiptetherow71 I can’t at all comment on the veracity of this but I’ve heard from people that the reason mini paints can be so expensive is because they need to be very highly pigmented to get good saturation and coverage over quite small areas, as well as not clog up detail. Not sure what the margins for mini paints are but I have to imagine there’s some truth to that statement since there are so many competing mini paint companies and all their prices are relatively similar per oz.
Regarding UHU: It is really important to pick the UHU with solvent and NOT the "solvent free" one as only the UHU with solvent will build the strings that you want!
I think your video on how to get back into painting has actually helped me. Since watching it, I got more paint on my eliminators, finished building my invictor tactical warsuit, he is all primed, has lots of dark angels bits, and I started painting him too. Taking it easy, no rush, but I am getting back into it and having fun. The new space marine buffs ought to make it fun to play as well.
I think that’s 90% of it man it needs to be fun. I don’t know about you but I’m a bit of a perfectionist and nothing ruins my drive and enjoyment of painting more than comparing my models to other peoples and Obsessing over every little mistake I make
8:23 On metal I used JB Weld in conjunction with pins. Drill hole for pins, scuff up touch areas, mix up the JB Weld, put some in pin holes, put in pin, smear a little more on, stick together. If if needs to be held I had one of those weighted things with the alligator clip arms. Hold it in position until it sets. Takes awhile, but you will not get those pieces apart.
I also use Golden titan buff for zenithal highlights. It’s a great starting point if you want your lighting to appear a little bit richer and warmer. The only thing I would add is that it tends to dry quite glossy, so I always add a little bit of matte varnish to it. Great vid as always! I really need to pick up some Uhu glue.
I really appreciate you often including footage of you knocking stuff over on accident. The comedic value is good, but it also makes your videos SO relatable.
As a huge fan of the old Rogue Trader, 2nd/3rd Ed models, I swear by Gel Gorilla Glue. Combined with a hand drill, some paper clips, and sprue cutters, it creates models that will hold up on the battlefield!
can confirm the wow stick is legit. Saw that on kickstarter and got one myself. It's literally perfect for hobby modeling. It's soooooo much better than using a dremel, pin vise, or cordless dril. Dremels are waaaaaay too high rpm and melt plastic, pin vise is slow and tedious, and cordless drills are way too big for anything except very large resin models.
I initially avoided the channel due to the clickbait titles, but I'm glad i gave it a chance. I've been hooked on your vids and TUP for the past week or so. The amount of effort you put into your videos really shows. Anyway, thanks for all the lessons and entertainment.
Enjoyed the video. I just wanted to mention Gorilla Glue also packages their gel glue in a fine tip applicator bottle. You just squeeze the two levers on the sides to get the glue out. No tapping the glue bottle. It also provides even more precise application of the glue.
I love that Gorilla Glue Gel! From my experience it is one of the only glues (other than an epoxy) that actually holds metal and pewter minis together. I'm glad that you called this one out.
I've used Loctite Fun-Tac for holding models to handles or paint sticks to spray primer. As long as you keep it's packaging and put it back under the plastic film it stays useable for a long time.
I bought a Wowstick because of this video and I would NOT recommend anyone else do so until they fix their manufacturing. There is a lot of slop in the threading which causes the drill to not be centered. Also, their Kickstarter is filled with comments from people who never recieved their Wowstick.
Really Useful Boxes are my go-to for hobby storage. In my opinion they're the best storage boxes out there, very strong and stackable. I use them for terrain, painting/modelling supplies, and for larger miniatures. Pick up some pluck foam online and you've got a great box for keeping your tanks or huge gribbly bugs safe.
You can also use mixed herbs for bases! The terrain tutor uses them for his burma build and it looks great for jungle ground cover! I've also found desert tan Vallejo primer is a pretty good match for wraithbone as well!
Can i add something? We all, by now, know how awesome Make-up brushes are for techniques like dry brushing are. Especially the smaller varieties for Eyeshadow, but also Powder brushes for bigger surfaces. One day, when i did my make-up i was wondering if Beauty Blender would work for wet-blending. They do - better than any brush, i dare say its basically airbrushing with a sponge. That's how good & smooth the finish is. Beauty Blender usually come in an egg shape, are microfiber/coconut fiber sponges and are specifically used for blending liquid make-up like foundation and concealer. I really recommend using them.
The gorilla (or loctite) gel glues are excellent for both gluing and for filling in gaps on metal models, especially with something to tidy up after them like the make up applicator your showed off. Been using that for years.
Welche to 2022, where you have to sit through a bunch of TH-cam adds, to watch a guy posting affiliate links while adding even more adds in the video. What a time to be alive!
This video popped up on my feed again and I have to say I bought one of the pen drills after watching this when it was posted, and it was one of the best hobby purchases I've ever made!
Really useful info. My preferred glue for metal miniatures with pinning is JB Weld Original Cold Weld Formula; this stuff once cured is the strongest I've encountered. The only downside is the long cure time requiring parts to be kept in a stable position until fully cured, which isn't ideal if one is in a hurry.
Some tools I found super useful. I enjoy the citadel paint handles, I just love the feel of it in my hands. They only thing they are super light, but the handle was hollow so I filled it with some small rocks. The added weight really helps when holding (helps dampen the shakes I get). Other benefit is the extra weight makes it harder to tip over when it is down on the table. Small wooden sticks with alligator clips are great I use them to hold small parts when spraying them. Super sharp fine nippers to clip parts. Super fine TAMIYA Photo-Etched Craft Saw. These rock they are .1 mm thick. They make a exacto look super thick. Super great to cut space marine joints apart to repose them. 1 and 2 mm wide chisels. I use them to trim emblems of marine, no longer are the cool looking sculpts are ultra marines.
Adding weight to the handle increases the likelihood of the model being held breaking if and when it’s eventually dropped so that’s why it’s not normally recommended to add weight
@@TheEnd The GW handle tends unclip from the base easily. So far I have not had had on brake when I have dropped it, but it does go flying. Also the weight seems to give it a weeble wobbles like effect that helps it not to tip over as easy from small bumps. Before the weight they would tip over just looking at them, so I'm willing to take the chance with it for now. I have not found any other handle that have that thin neck like them and it just fits my hands so well.
@@mortisangelica if the handle works for you that’s great I’m happy for you I know some people are critical of those handles but I just wanted to warn you that with the added weight comes added force to the model if it’s dropped

Love the gorilla super glue too. I prefer the blue cap because it flows more than the green cap. Great tip with the coconut fiber! That looks really nice for a forest scene.
Quick tip about the Golden High flow. I've found when doing a zenithal highlight with the Titan Buff the black shadows to be too dark, especially when doing lighter warmer colours. As a fix to this, I use Sepia instead of black. Now my shadows look WAY better, softer and more natural.
i'd like to add one thing. often in grocery stores you can find cherry tomatoes or snack cucumbers or carrots in a nice size plastic cup/bucket thingy. if you see one without holes on the bottom, get one, it's the best water container that you can find for your brush water. and most of the time they come with a little handle for extra comfort and use! i've been using the same one for years
There are these little freshness packets you get in some products(like beef jerky) that have small clay beads instead of the usual silicon beads. They make for a great cobblestone effect for bases. Just drip glue into the base, add the clay beads, fill the gaps, and paint/add touches.
I ❤the wow stick. As a necromunda player who loves kitbashing GW terrain the wowstick has made my life so much easier. Between it and a hobby saw tiles are a non issue to cut apart. Seriously this is the only place I have heard about it and am so glad I did.
loctite super glue gel also works great because it has special things on the side to help you squeeze it out as well as a mich finer tip that works better for miniatures specifically. you won't have to smack the bottle either, however it comes with slightly less glue, but I think it's worth it.
Gorilla Glue gel was a total game changer for me. I paint larger scale GK's as well as minis, had tried a hundred different brands of glue, and gorilla glue gel is just in a different league. Once it sets, even on a large cast resin kit, the resin will snap before the glue will let go. Handy hint, for a bit more precision you can always just unscrew the lid and dip a toothpick or q-tip in it to apply it to only the area you need.
Jon! yet another banger! I love when you put these out because there’s always at least one thing that literally changes the painting game for me. Last time it was So Flat acrylics which are my bread and butter now. And I’m thinking the wow stick might be the new game changer. I already have titan buff but have never used it the way you suggest. So now I’m gonna go through a heck of a lot more of it I guess 😂
I use sawdust and small rocks(sand or gravel) on the basing, works very well and is very cheap. Gotta try your tips though, thanks for the amazing video!
I recently picked up the so flat golden paint pots. I love them and am considering replacing all of my army painted paints with them. All because of your videos to try something new. Thanks man.
Eight products GW really doesn't want you to know about. Flames of war Kings of war Bolt action Malifaux Battle tech Army painted Wahapedia 3D printers
I feel like I've seen a ton of these "alternative product" kind of videos--and don't get me wrong, the more the better. But this one like...most of these things I haven't ever heard of and could absolutely use. Damn, Ninjon, did it again homie!
I use the Sterilite Stack and Carry system for most of my minis. They have the same dimensions as the Really Useful Stuff bin with the benefit of interlocking stickability, a slightly deeper height and you get 2 bins in a pack. 10.62 x 14.37 x 3.75 inches per layer. I have stacks as tall as 3 and 4 tiers for my various WHQ collections. That being said, I am definitely picking up one of the RUS bins in the 9 Liter size as it will/should still stack with my Sterlite system but has a depth of 6" for my extra tall guys such as banner bearers.
For people in the UK, this week (15th April 2022) Lidl supermarket have rolls of 3M double sided 19mm x 4m tape in. I can't remember how much I paid, but it wasn't much.
I just purchased the wowstick myself. I love it. A lot easier to control. Prior to this I was using a dermal and I have to say the wowstick was a great purchase.
Thanks for tips mate. Ordered the Wow on your advice and I'll be picking up some of the gorilla gel too for my infinity models. Keep up the great work!
Ninjon, my dad had responsebility for storage of tools in a big company a lot of years ago. Every glue (except plastic glue that was based on acetone) where stored in a fridge, cause it made it not stiffen or clog. Just a tip! And i t hink it will help wth the gorilla as well. I just use Loctite, as my dad had a loctite fridge at work, and all kinds where stored cold. I never have this issue, but i hear everyone else do. Hope it helps :)
I agree. I store my glue in the freezer. It won't freeze and I tape around the lid to try sealing it. Low humidity keeps it from setting. Bring to room temp before using.
Hey Jon, thanks for sharing more fantastic hobby tips. Having returned to painting minis over the last couple of years through the boardgaming hobby, I'm always keen to discover tips and tricks to make things simpler and easier and really appreciate videos like this that not only help make existing things easier but also inspire to try new stuff not yet considered. Thanks for all your efforts and great videos! Keep 'em coming ❤️🤗
Thanks for the museum wax tip, that orange rack that comes with the red grass holders is brilliant at first but quickly loses tack after a dozen or so uses
The Wowstick has been tops on my list of things to get for a minute, now, and both the museum wax and the coconut fibers sound intriguing. When it comes to superglue, I'm a Loc-Tite gel kinda guy, here; I get good results with that one. Those makeup applicators sound like a good investment as well, for that matter. Good video as usual, Jon, and thank you!
A buddy of mine got a few Wowsticks from their kickstarter and gave me one. It's great! I recommend grabbing one when you get the chance. I haven't used it on metals yet but it does seem to have an issue with resin. Could be user error and impatience with me though with the drill getting stuck on occasion. Edit: Just to add on I have seen some complaints with the QA and their customer service. I haven't had to contact them about anything yet so I can't really say. Just putting this in as a heads up.
Had no idea the wowstick was a kickstarter project. Found it, and bought it, on amazon a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. Been using it to pin a bunch of metal miniatures without issue.
*"quake hole" museum tack works better than regular blue or yellow tack.* It's my go to, because it even works for models or parts lacking flat places to hold them and it's handy to be able to stick a model upside down. Biggest tip for that: work it a little 1st, then apply to the holder, stick the model to it last. I can hold it upside down and shake with most models and they stay put. If you try to stick it to the model then the holder, it won't get enough pressure and area spread to stay on the holder, so will both risk falling off and risk breaking some models.
Another great advise video Jon! You've been instrumental in giving me so many valuable ideas to elevate my creativity. Thank you once again, you're awesome!👍 Take care.
Jon could probably convince me to buy almost anything from videos like this. He could just start adding random stuff, give a half-assed reason about how it helps with painting, and I’d buy it.
For those in Australia, gorilla glue gel can be hard to find at times. If you can't find it - get Loctite Super Glue Gel. Just as good, just as awesome :)
Really Useful Boxes are really useful! It’s so good to see another aficionado! Another thing to check out to temporarily stick things to things is butyl. Got that one from Adam Savage… not personally… I mean… from a video…
Thanks for this video. It's extremely helpful. You forgot the mug on your desk though. It can be used as a water pot which costs about 20 bucks if you use the gw one :-D
I have one for you. If you use Tamiya Extra Thin Cement then a great saving is buy one then when you need more buy Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner. They are the same thing. But the tamiya airbrush cleaner is a 3rd of the price. Just use it to top up your original bottle
Yup! Golden high flow are the my favorite go to out of the bottle. You have to mix directly tho, shaking will not always do with their hiflow product line. It is amazing when it does what it is supposed to, but if you leave on the shelf too long after opening you'll have some very serious separation (even if it looks mixed, it's usually not). All that said... In acrylic paints, Golden is as good as it gets.
Just when I thought my arsenal was complete and I didn't have to spend any more money, Ninjon come out with a video. OOOOO cool.. yep looks like I'm spending more money.
Instead of blutac, which I've found the same problems with, I use a yellow version called... U-tac. It's a hell of a lot sticker but tends to be softer and more malleable and it can leave some of itself behind and squishes easily, which ain't that good in some applications. But the best thing is that it can be mixed with blutac which stiffens it up without losing its stickier properties.
I get a small plastic bottle cap and use that to mix uhu with variious paints to create different coloured stringy goop. Tesseract glow is great for making toxic slime!
Excellent video. Already discovered Gorilla glue gel. I don't use anything else now as it is much better than anything else. I have never thought of using coco fibre for basing. I have used it for years with tarantulas and houseplants (different hobbies, although tarantulas and plants would work but might alarm people looking at the potted plant and finding a tree spider looking at them?!). Didn't occur to me to use for basing. Genius.
I use rubber-toughened super glue for metal minis. It dries with a little bit of flex to it, the bond is crazy-strong, and it has a little hold to it right out of the bottle, which can be clutch when a piece wiggles or whatever and you need to reposition it. Great for gap filling, too.
After buying a couple of Gorilla Gel Glues that were already hardened in the bottle, I've been checking everyone I find, and I haven't found one in years. The whole contents sticks stubbornly to one place at the bottom of the bottle. So double-check the bottles before purchasing them.
All great choices! I was unaware of most. The wow stick and coconut fibers and also the uhu glue are all on their way from Amazon for under 20 dollars. Good stuff.
I feel like that's a good benchmark of when people start exploring the hobby more, using multiple companies to make something amazing instead of sticking to just one! Keep being awesome Ninjon!

loctite super glue gel also works great because it has special things on the side to help you squeeze it out as well as a mich finer tip that works better for miniatures specifically. you won't have to smack the bottle either, however it comes with slightly less glue, but I think it's worth it.
UHU is my hero! Adding inks to get really cool slime and viscera effects is super easy too!
We have been blessed by more precious doggo footage! 🥰
I recently picked up the so flat golden paint pots. I love them and am considering replacing all of my army painted paints with them. All because of your videos to try something new. Thanks man.
Eight products GW really doesn't want you to know about.
Flames of war
Kings of war
Bolt action
Malifaux

I feel like I've seen a ton of these "alternative product" kind of videos--and don't get me wrong, the more the better. But this one like...most of these things I haven't ever heard of and could absolutely use. Damn, Ninjon, did it again homie!
Sanding blocks are such an awesome hidden gem tool for the hobby. I love them and use them regularly.
Been using titan buff for like a year. Glad to see someone else singing the praises of golden fluid acrylics
Nice recommendations. Definitely interested in the pen drill. Pinning metal models is a chore. Anything to ease that up would be nice.
Thank you for this very educative video!
Being in the hobbies for years but still learning the new ways!
For people in the UK, this week (15th April 2022) Lidl supermarket have rolls of 3M double sided 19mm x 4m tape in. I can't remember how much I paid, but it wasn't much.
Damn, this may be the most useful 13 minutes on TH-cam. Thank you!
Best mini painting TH-camr. Hands down.
Love these types of videos. Really helps find new and fun tools to expand what I can do
Thanks for the museum wax tip, that orange rack that comes with the red grass holders is brilliant at first but quickly loses tack after a dozen or so uses
Looks like the wowstick isn't available for now.
Got the drill a couple months ago. Game changer! Love it!
the #1Product Games Workshop doesn't want you to know about is, SLA printers.
Had no idea the wowstick was a kickstarter project. Found it, and bought it, on amazon a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. Been using it to pin a bunch of metal miniatures without issue.
I love the coconut fiber for bases! That stuff is great!
Neat stuff! I just ordered the drill, museum wax, UHU, and coconut husk fibers. I look forward to stepping up my game!
The 90 degrees sides of the really useful boxes make them my favorite storage bins.
Ima throw in instant ramen noodles next time just to test this
Don’t test how weak my self control is
Really Useful Boxes are fantastic!! My job got rid of 20 odd so I managed to take them home for my minis!
Any superglue and a miniscule ball of green stuff works every time for me, often with a stronger hold as it fills little crevices
The Wow stick is a great addition! I use a hat pin and mark a ‘divot’ before I drill.
I bought all of these. I do prefer blu-tac to the museum wax. The drill is amazing! For someone like me with arthritis, it is a game changer!
I have one for you. If you use Tamiya Extra Thin Cement then a great saving is buy one then when you need more buy Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner. They are the same thing. But the tamiya airbrush cleaner is a 3rd of the price. Just use it to top up your original bottle
I find sealing basing material with varnish works well, and provides a great surface to throw a wash on if you want to bump up the contrast.
Thanks for makeing this list, i build model aircraft, ships and tanks and because of your list i got a wow pen and its brilliant
Great video ! The double sided sticky tape was a game changer for me. I made several of my own holders with that stuff.
"If you sniffed one glue you sniffed them all!" Perfect lmaooooo!!!!
I saw someone use silly putty for masking with an airbrush. I've used it a few times and am a fan.
The save at 4:33 wasn’t the reason I subbed but it made me do it quicker.
How useful is this Box?
Jon: YES
I get a small plastic bottle cap and use that to mix uhu with variious paints to create different coloured stringy goop. Tesseract glow is great for making toxic slime!
Golden paits are amazing. The light naphtol red is great for red lenses!
Genius.
Great tips! 😃 Thank you so much, I will be picking up multiple things from this list I don't own yet 😃
Thanks for this video Jon! Ordered a bunch of stuff. Can't wait to try out the drill (I hate manual pin vises) and coconut fibers.
I use rubber-toughened super glue for metal minis. It dries with a little bit of flex to it, the bond is crazy-strong, and it has a little hold to it right out of the bottle, which can be clutch when a piece wiggles or whatever and you need to reposition it. Great for gap filling, too.
Thank you so much for your time and effort in these videos. They really help fuel my fire for my hobbies! 🔥
Does anyone know what brand the trees visible on the table at 7:20 are?
After buying a couple of Gorilla Gel Glues that were already hardened in the bottle, I've been checking everyone I find, and I haven't found one in years. The whole contents sticks stubbornly to one place at the bottom of the bottle. So double-check the bottles before purchasing them.
Those sticks you use for glue are also good for for cleaning air brushes, also uhu plus blood red is great on Daemon teeth
All great choices! I was unaware of most. The wow stick and coconut fibers and also the uhu glue are all on their way from Amazon for under 20 dollars. Good stuff.
