That wood elf's eyes tell a story of one who loves his herb garden.

Under Minnesota law he better not be projecting a yield of more than 42 grams of crop from his herb garden otherwise he be jumping up from a misdemeanor to a full blown federal pounded in the ass prison sentence.
As much as I miss the regularity of Friday releases, I can really feel the difference in passion and quality freeform creation/content release is making, TH-cam jazz if you will. Thanks Scott for always taking us on these experimental journeys. I get really scared of new techniques and these honest videos always help take the edge off in trialling out new techniques.
I have one issue with this sculpt: the horns dont look like they're attached to his head. The hair doesnt flow around them at all, it almost looks as if it flows underneath them somehow. Really tiny detail, but also impossible to ignore now I've noticed it
It's easier to control airbrush blends when you know the pigments in your paints. Metal oxide pigments have large, opaque grains. This is why white paints are notoriously chunky, especially titanium white. Many neutral and earth tones are oxides, like ochres and siennas and umbers, along with ultramarine blue and chromium green. (For a really good Payne's Grey, mix burnt sienna with ultramarine.) For blending, especially through an airbrush, you'll probably have an easier time with organic, synthetic pigments. Those all have laboratory-sounding names like quinacridone, phthalo, and diarylide. Organic pigments typically have very small, transparent grains. This means that you need to build up more layers for coverage, but that's perfect for blending.

if possible takes a few things with u like 5 to 7 Colors (Bases Color for mixing plus 1 or 2 metals) and a few miniatures. kinda pushes ur creativity bcs ur have to challenge ur normale methods.

I'll have you know I'm incredibly sensitive about my freehandophobia!
One of the key things Sergio teaches with Capibases is starting with the darkest dark first shadow “primera umbris”. Painting the entire model this way before moving on to the next layer, which is only slightly brighter and covers 90% of the model again. Each layer is smaller and smaller but you cover the whole area again. Eventually pushing toward the brightest highlights. Like you said, contrast is key because you’re going to push them back down with the blending step.
But I really think starting with the deepest shadows over the whole surface is a key to getting this technique right. It seems like a waste, but you’ll be surprised at how fast it moves along. It’s liberating and super cathartic to paint this way.

Here's a thought. You tell the tale of this wood elf being in the "Fall" of it's life. What if you got three more, then painted Spring, Summer, and Winter? Then build a base that allows you to have all 4 together as a comparison display. Not sure if you have the time or would want to. But if you did, I'd love to see it.

I was nearly ten minutes into this video, getting excited to try this out when I realized "Oh, this is basically just pre-shading", something that's a pretty standard technique with scale-modeling and garage kits. You start by shading your model, going way darker than you want your finished darks to be, then use the airbrush over the top for your midtone.
I honestly find it really interesting how there is so much cross-over in the different 'disciplines' of model painting, and how some techniques from one discipline don't carry over at all.
Man, I love your honesty in these videos. It's great to hear about the doubts and struggles that you go through during your process. As someone I look up to in the community, you helped me be kinder on myself and enjoy the process, INCLUDING the mistakes, and how to learn from them. It's incredibly freeing.
That buste is a killer. It captures so many layers on the wood elfes. Great job.

Do it. It's just two colors that get mixed on the mini instead on the palette.
I'm from an artist background in which to say I took some art classes in highschool where we used to paint on a canvas. I could probably say color pencils use a similar technic to wet blending almost, it's more like pressure blending. Adjusting the pressure of the pencils to blend colors and to make it smooth. Maybe it just me on the color pencils thing.
ANYWAY, wet blending is much easier for me as it feels more natural to get colors to mesh. I have an incredible issue figuring out shadows and highlights as I'm used to still life's rather than imaging where they'd go. I should be taking a picture of my models and following the gray scale version of that. But I have such a hard time with shadow and highlight placement.
Tried wetblending the other day in 30 degrees C heat the first layer of paint was dry before I could apply the second one tried again with more paint ended up moving around dry paint ended up getting the airbrush out ain’t trying wetblending in Australian heat ever again

Vince Venturella has a fantastic tutorial where he does this technique on a large scale model too! It's been a technique I've always been aware of but never tried out. Must give it a try! Thanks Miniac!
I was a patreon for Sergio and he did amazing job on a war cry 35mm figure using this style. Well worth a watch but its masterful stuff. You really need to understand the colour mixes for the airbrush stage which I struggled with.

Always glad to see people struggling with techniques they're not familiar with(not in a sadistic way, you pervert). Reminds me that its normal to struggle with something when you're still figuring it out. The fact that you're even willing to try stuff that's so radically different to how you normally do things re-invigorates my drive to keep doing what I'm doing with my own painting. Now if only I had a massive pile of shame backlogged I wouldn't be waiting for a new piece to arrive....

Cool man, the choice of green shadow was inspired and works as a hue contrast as well as value and adds a lot of depth and interest to the model. It also kind of works as reflected light from a forest environment. Nice job!

I am in the same situation and trying to get out of my "comfort zone".So iam trying to do more busts .But these smooth transitions and contrasts are getting me insane.And there is a lot of respect to doing these high contrasts and to believe to get them all blend in well....and not to mess it up😲

What a beautiful model.
I saw this from Vince Venturella. I used it for my Hulk Mini and my Modok mini and its soo good and stress free way to blend. It allows you to get some of the smooth blends with the airbrush, but more control with where the shadows and highlights go. I loved it so much!!!!

Interestingly I use this technique on my last project to do non-metallic metal gold. I started with a rust based coat and then picked out my shining points with yellow and ivory and then with the airbrush I worked from Bright to dark ending up with my Darkest Color a burnt umber. It is definitely helpful on the large scale models that lend itself to airbrushing

Another awesome episode. It makes sense to use the airbrush like this. AK Interactive has a book on Flesh&Skin that breaks down the painting idea like paint by numbers as well. They divide the two approaches into the Korean and Spanish schools of approach. This seems like taking the same ideas and softening it with an airbrush.

You can refer the first step as : Mass Drawing. or Blocking. Very common in Canvas painting and sketching. Rough Patch of Light and Shadow that define and enhance the shape/volume right away.
Mastering this makes your subject neat on the first glance. That's the thinking behind cartoon coloration, game shaders, pixel art, sculpting. Adding "resolution" by blending, post-processing.
I actually do that on especially larger figure. I do the same for aircraft and armor. Adds a ton of depth.
I been using this technique on Creature Caster's Krampus model. I chose to do yellow as a color as a challenge and have not been disappointed in finding obstacles. However the blocking and do over with diluted paint in the airbrush does make it look great, especially when highlights are defined and then a glaze applied. Very very diluted yellow, and it came out great. I used glaze medium from liquitex along with thinner and some yellow from Scale75. That being said, I still haven't finished the model because I have paint and plastic crack ADHD. Soon though. Soon...

I have tried this once and it was bit hit and miss. I first saw this on Vince Venturella's channel. I believe I struggled with it due to the small size of the miniature I was using. I ended up blending out too much of my dark tones for my taste. But I really enjoyed it; it was fun and will continue keep trying this out.

Scott, that paint job is simply fantastic. The color choices fit it very well, and your addition of tufts and the Uhu glue webbing take the piece in a different direction than is usually seen. I don't know how it would stand up against Golden Demon or Crystal Brush winners for most people, but it would definitely get my vote. Well done!
If someone thinks it is sacrilegious then I say you gotta do it! I love the look of the grass and spider webs on the antlers. It gives the whole thing a very unique and realistic feel. It might be fun to even put a spider hanging out there though that might make the whole thing a little comical, not sure.

Alternative #3 Lesson : Prefer smoothing with artist inks (mixed with matte varnish) for less speckling
Golden Fluid Acrylics are great for that too, and they have a great color range. For blending, avoid metal pigments (titanium white, ochres, umbers, ultramarine blue, anything "oxide"). The synthetic organic pigments have much smaller pigment grains. Stuff like quinacridone reds, benz yellows, phthalo blues and greens.
I followed Sergio for a while, and this is where I am, too. Sergio paints large minis, and I paint board game minis. He's basically using a filter to blend, and it doesn't have to be with the airbrush.
@@beezany I use Golden Fluids as well, but I've reached opposite conclusions! I find the synthetics, especially the phthalos, too glossy. I use all of the others regularly. The don't cover as well, but they're good over a zenithal highlight or for blending.
@@deeabel6267 Yeah, most artist acrylics have few additives (and no matting agents), so you need to control finish yourself. Typically they end up satin or glossy. Sometimes, I mix matte medium into the paint. Lately, I have just been covering up the shiny base coat with a matte wash or varnish. Washes flow great over satin & gloss finishes.
@@beezany Two tools in the toolbox - I have a bottle of diluted Golden Super Matte Medium that I sometimes use with the very glossy paints, and I always finish with AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish.

@miniac FINALLY you guys are providing more info on Capibases/Airbrush blending. I've been STARVING for more videos on this exact topic. I saw Emil over at @squidmar mention it in one of his airbrush videos, briefly, but too briefly.
I learned about this from Sergio Calvo, but he just talks about it in his videos and never actually showed how it was done while I was subbed to his Patreon. And I found his videos quite hard to follow too.
Watch some videos from Trent Denison - he has great commentary on what he is doing and why.
Functionally, airbrush blending is glaze blending. Many light colors are made by mixing titanium white with the base pigment. Titanium white is very opaque. Glazing with very opaque pigments is tricky. Hence the problem of airbrush blending using many light colors.
If you use something more translucent (a non-cadmium yellow, orange, or red without white added, for instance), you should have better luck when using lighter colors. Or you can use a darker translucent like the phthalocyanine pigments.

I think you had it down on the left shoulder , you just needed to put that highlight all over the bust , it was very informative and I look forward to trying this technique .
I liked the part where you talked about the forms on the jaw/ cheek area. That area really does read well on your model and it really shows the sculptor knows how to make interesting forms
