    In this video we look at my Harbor Freight 21 Gallon Oiled Compressor and do a Long Term review. I have owned and used this compressor for about 3 years and I will give you a detailed explanation of any trouble spots and the benefits of ownership. I will also show you how easy it is to change the oil on this compressor if you don't know how to do it. I will give you my honest opinion on whether this is a good compressor to own or not.

      @the 5 minute mark, the component you're referring to is a 'Cold Start Valve', not a pressure release valve.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AXNJXN1 It goes by many different names. The purpose of the unit is to release pressure from the piston so it can start more easily. Less back pressure to fight against. Lawn mower engines have the same thing.

    Owned one for several years now. Been through years of neglect. Extreme heat in summer and extreme cold in winter. No issues whatsoever with mine. Would recommend to anyone.

      John Dozier I live in Reno and the temperature at night gets down in the 30’s and my compressor wouldn’t fire up and blew some fuses. What do you do to use your HF compressor in the winter? Any tips?

    Have had this one for 2 years. I change the oil regularly with the harbor freight oil. Beat the hell out of this like running it for six hours straight, never letting the motor turn off. She’s still kicking.

    Glad I watched this. Had mine 10 years. Never changed oil. Another post said take the visor sight glass off to drain oil.
    Briggs & Stratton oil came with mine . . .

      HF is clearing out the Black Compressors so they can make more money on the rebranded newer compressors. They are doing this with many of their older lines of products. New name = Higher price = More profit.

    I had 3 returns / 1 that listed 4 years it was noisy and it wore out, never ran in temps that was colder than 40 degrees. It went to the curb.

    Is it possible to use the Vacuum method to suck the oil out instead of draining it?

    Most common failure is people have a weak outlet or a long extension cord hooked up to this and that's why the compressor has problems.

  • @gregbotlin4446
    @gregbotlin4446 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Do you empty your tank at the end of the day? I'm always concern about leaving compressed air, as I'm not sure when I'll use it again. Thanks

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I also have seen the advertised db at 90, but I did my own test and in my garage I could only get 83, so that is the number I went with. Goes to show that it can be louder or quieter depending on where it is located.

    • @ModernDIYProjects

    How well do you think this could work for automotive painting?

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It should be fine. I have done Auto painting before with a smaller compressor and had no problems. Most Auto paints will spray at 45psi or lower, so the guns are not air hogs. I painted several cars before with a 12 gallon compressor with a max PSI of 100, so this one is way bigger in every way.

      I also replaced the pressure release..

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say the pressure release valve but you already did that. But make sure that it does open up when you first start it and runs for about 30 seconds just to be sure. You can also try a thinner oil and see if that reduces drag. Aside from that it must be mechanical wear, or something mechanical is holding it back. Open up the top cover and see if any parts have shifted out of place. Also make sure it has sufficient electrical current going to it. On cold days it may draw more current than hotter days. Bad fuse or cord could be causing problems.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got a good deal. They have been raising the price on that lately. Also be sure to do the oil break in procedure so you don't forget later. It will drop a lot of metal in the oil so change it out if you want it to last you.

  • @afranco9
    @afranco9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    How often do you change the oil? I bought one just like that about 7 months ago and want mine to last as long as yours. I removed the handle as well. It is loud but extremely useful.

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I change the oil every 6 months and you saw in the video how dirty it gets. Mind you, I don't use it every single day, so if you do, I would make it a shorter interval. Compressor oil is cheap, I get that bottle of oil at Home Depot for $2.50 and I get 3 changes per bottle.

    It's actually 1.5 running HP and 2.5 max HP, whatever that means. Edit: I'm wrong! I take it back. I swore I was just at HF today and saw that on their paperwork for this unit. Maybe I did but I'm still going to defer to what the website and this video says as accurate. My apologies.

    Home Depot has a tall skinny 20g husky air compressor with a max of 175psi & 5.0cfm@90 for $189.99 and it's not as loud as harbor freight 👍

    • @ModernDIYProjects
      @ModernDIYProjects  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are many more choices now than when I bought this beast. It was the cheapest at the time ($149), and it was oiled, which all the Home Depot compressors were oil-less. I wanted an oiled one and it has been good to me so far, so no complaints here. The noise, is relative since I don't use it all the time. But each buyer has to make a choice based on their needs and budget.

      The DB will vary among units depending on where it is located, oil used, air filter, etc. I probably have things around mine that adsorb some of the sound. It is still rather noisy, so it matters not such a minor difference.
