Remington actually went out of business in 2020 and was sold to multiple different companies. They've since resumed operations, and moved from New York, to Georgia.

I live in Herkimer, NY which is the neighboor town to Ilion, NY. After WWII, my grandfather worked at the Rem plant for 41 years. Occasionally Big Green would have employee only sales of overrun or display items (rifles, shotguns, ammo). My father told my grandfather to pick up 7mm rem mag 700 if one made the list. One day my grandfather brought home a BEAUTIFUL BDL in 8mm rem mag he picked for $85 thinking that 1mm isnt much difference. Oooof what a difference it is.
Shorten the story- It made it to my cabinet and i am one of the biggest fans of this ctg and ever the tinkerman. My handloads send a a 200gr Barnes TSX around 3200fps and a 250 Woodleigh Weldcore RN at 3000fps into cloverleaf holes at 100yds. No signs of over pressure. Destroys beercans at 300yds. Havent had a chance to test the TSX on game yet. and probably never would need the 250gr Woodleighs. Truth be told it really is brutal recoil but not bad with a heavy coat.
I do understand the obsolesence argument here, but the capability of this cartridge could never be questioned.

      I’ve taken white tail
      Mule
      Sheep
      Caribou
And when I got to afford my elk hunt 3 years ago before Covid hit all my friends said take ur 300 or borrow my 338 like really a 338 for elk. More elk have fallen to 30/30/270/3006/25-35/ and or weaker cartridges. In the end I grabbed one of my 3 25-06, maple stock medallion x bolt with hand loaded speer 120 grains at 3100fps plus and one shot boiler room. He went 10 ft and died. Big bull elk. I will always love the 25-06 and love the new 135 grainers coming out. Just gotta get a 1:7.5” Barrel kr even a custom 1:8” and use that barreled gun for 120-135 and you 1:9/10” barrels for all else 87-115

At the 4 minute mark I genuinely guessed right with the 8mm Rem Mag. I have one in my collection - The cartridge that is. I've never fired one but I have owned the cartridge since I was about 12 years old. The day an old gun smith gave me the 8mm Rem Mag he also gave me a 250-3000 and a 221 Rem Fireball cartridge. I still have them in my small collection.

Craig Boddington experimented with the 8mm Rem Mag, with good results and excellent accuracy (in a rifle with a 28” barrel). Like many other cartridges, it is a “tweener” right in the middle of cartridges that were already popular themselves. Hard for owners of rifles on either side to justify adding an 8mm Rem Mag to their collection.

I owned an 8mm Rem Mag in the late 70's and loved it!! It was very accurate with factory ammo and was deadly on moose. It was my loaner rifle for those who were just getting in the hunting game and it was used on moose and elk out to 350 yds with great efficiency. I sold it to one of those borrowers in the early 80's as I had several other rifles that I was experimenting with. I got my price for it which was unexpected as it was in a Rem 700 BDL and the price was well over the MSRP. Biggest regret was even though it was numerically a heavy recoiling rifle the rifle fit me so well it felt more like my several 30-06's. Sad to see it might be removed from the inventory!!

I remember when Remington came out with the 8mm. A cartridge I am starting to fall in love with the 8 is the parent cartridge of it. Thats the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner. Basically equals the 300 Winchester in performance but take a look at the BC of those 7MM bullets!! I don’t have one right this minute but the much higher BC on those 7mm bullets tells me it should really outperform the 300 at range. Would love it if you would go in depth on this idea of mine.

I had a 7mm STW for a while in a Weatherby Accumark, it was a nice rifle and shot well with heavy bullets. It kicked just like my .300 Weatherby though, and was just as heavy, they are both gone now. I found like you did, that the .300 Winchester Magnum had similar ballistics, and for me in a slightly lighter rifle it worked out well. For as far as I will shoot it's more than enough. We all have our favorites, that's the great thing about all the choices we have, and maybe a little bit of a curse as well. Enjoy that STW!

I'm an 8mm fan. I couldn't decide between a 338 mag and a 300 mag and really wanted something in between. I picked up an inexpensive used Rem 700 in 8mm Rem Mag. I really like the performance. It's sort of in the same niche as the 338 Win Mag. The 325 WSM will almost match it's performance in a short action. I think the ideal 8mm would be somewhere in between the WSM and the Rem Mag. The old 8x68mm S Schuler cartridge would be just about perfect, IMO, except for the odd bolt face diameter that's bigger than our 30-06 size and smaller than our magnum bolt faces. That presents challenges in building a modern rifle in this old cartridge. I've considered doing a wildcat, probably based on the 375 Ruger, but shortened a little. Didn't have a good way to push the shoulder back. Now that the 7mm PRC is out there, all sorts of gears are turning in my head about maybe necking that up to 323.
I do like my Big 8. I tamed the recoil a little bit by putting a McMillan Fiberglass stock on it with a LimbSaver recoil pad. Mine came with a 24" barrel and I really think you'd need at least 26" to get the potential out of this big cartridge. I don't really want to go longer because I like short, handy rifles. That's part of the reason I'm considering a wildcat design, or maybe just getting a 325 WSM and calling it good.
EDIT: Nosler makes factory ammo for it. I've been shooting the 200 gr AccuBond at an advertised 3000 fps. I have some 220 gr Sierra Game Kings and some 220 gr Swift A-Frames I want to try reloading.

A guy that I hunted elk with had one in a 700 Bdl rifle.
He passed away from a brain hemorrhage....
It was thought then, that maybe his brain hemorrhages wete caused by the recoil of his favorite elk rifle.
We'll never know! I shot it a couple of times. Yeah, it kicks!
The best thing about the cartridge is getting the brass for reforming into other cartridges....
    358 STA, 300 Weatherby, 375 H&H, 7mm STW, 340 Weatherby, etc....

I could never figure out why the recoil was so severe with it, but the same model in the 375 H&H was "milder". I lost both (among others) in a house fire back in '14, otherwise, it would still be in my collection. Not only have I heard of it and shot it, I own one in a BDL with a 24 inch barrel, with a sako extractor and muzzle brake. Hand loading absolutely squeezes the best out of it with modern slower powders. Remington and nosler offer factory loads, my local gun shop always has nosler accubond factory loads on the shelf. It has a bit of a following here. I absolutely love it. I shoot a 200 grain accubond and 220 Sierra out of it, I call it the hammer. I’ve shot everything from deer to moose and wood bison with it here in Yukon Territory, and it just makes things feel sick and die fast. It is similar to lots of others, but it has a unique feel and gets people talking. I love mine and will never let it go. I also love the 325wsm so I guess I’m just a bit weird. I agree it’s on the way out commercially, but there will always be a few purists that will keep it alive and taking game up here in the north. Good video Ron.

I had an 8mm Rem mag, and loved it.
Its funny the negatives that get thrown around about a lack of bullets or recoil. There are 150, 175, 180, 195, 200, 220 and 250gn bullets for it, how many do you need? The talk of recol, any cartridge that has the energy the 8mm has will boot a bit, the .300's and the .338's with similar weight bullets at similar speeds, will kick about the same.
The 8mm is a real killer and is a great 1 gun rifle for non DG big game.

8 mag, had one for years, I liked it but, really didn't do much my .300's and .338 didn't do, and was no match for my .340 Weatherby. Also, for the record, I have handloaded the 8mm Rem. It's an Incredible cartridge, fits in an 06 length action and will push 200gr Accubonds over 3125fps. It's a pretty flat shooting thumper! The downside is recoil. It's a fast, sharp, grenade in the armpit type of recoil. I do not have a muzzle brake installed on the rifle either. No they're not going to get rid of that 25-06 that's too good of a gun I actually thought it was going to be the 222 not because it's bad round or anything but mainly because there's so many out there that outdo it

Loved this video, would also really like to see one about the 416 Remington magnum, maybe compared to the 416 Rigby or 375 H&H

I may have misunderstood you at the 06:54 mark when you stated that the 8mm was the only .32 caliber under the Remington name. Apologies if I am wrong but the Remington semiauto model 8 and 81 Woodsmasters and the Remington pump model 14 and 141 Gamemasters as well as the Remington model 30 bolt action all came in the 32 Remington developed in 1906 and also known as the 32 Remington Rimmed or 32 Remington Auto loading. Before everybody breaks out torches and pitchforks, Yes 8mm Remington Magnum is an actual .323 and the 32 Remington is a .321 but I respectfully believe they are both 32 Cal’s

The 8mm just doesn't have the support for component bullets. I have some big 220 gr bullets on the shelf for it if I ever got one. Those probably wont get used.

ER Shaw will make you a 8mm Remington magnum and you will have to roll your own or go with a custom reloader outfit. Great caliber for big thin skinned critters.

This was fun to watch, I wonder if Rem. remarketed this cartridge as the “8mm RM” if it would improve sales? Perhaps they don’t want to cut into their 7mm RM sales. They have that history with the 7 SAUM (which I hand load for,) only offering it with a 22” barrel. I have it in a 25” barrel in my Tang Safety 77 short-action that isn’t any longer overall than a 7 RM with a 24” barrel, and it has similar performance- With less powder and recoil!

I was guessing 7 RSAUM before the grain bullet comment. Have one and love it. Life became easier after we started loading cartridges.

Remington did make another 32 caliber cartridge in the early 1900s. The 32 Remington, although I believe it used a .321 bullet.
