Ok, so let's do some quick math... This is the 16th song into their set... If you average each song at 6 minutes per (which is conservative given how live performances can extend each song)... We have this equation... 16 X 6 = 96 Minutes... So that is an hour and a half of Midnight Oil level intensity... And then watch them play this song with the kind of energy and precision as if it's the first song of the night... Seriously?!?! Just f-ing unreal! I saw them 3 times in the mid 80s. Still to this day, by FAR the best live performances I have ever experienced! And why Rob Hirst isn't ever mentioned in any list of the top 10 drummers of all time is a friggin CRIME!!
This concert is a MASTERPIECE. One of the best performances EVER. In the gloomy days, the world need this energy and powerful words. Thanks Midnight Oil for everything.
I always loved Midnight Oil but I only recently discovered this concert. You are correct - absolutely brilliant. The sound engineer deserves a lot of credit, too for the crystal clear sound.
Possibly the greatest ever rock n roll performance. This track boils through my body every time I hear it. Blistering, frenetic and powerful. What a capture of a band in full flight.

Remember , 85' This whole concert was what made SIMULCAST legendary in my eyes... I mean Ears.. It set the highest of standards. And Keith Walker , what a killa broadcast mix.....I salute you.
I think Keith also did The Oils at the Capitol in '82. Great sound. That was one of the things was to capture this band's live sound which is more intense than studio material though they're awesome too. I just think The Oils live was something to behold. Been seeing them live since 1978. Go boys.
Watching this clip reminds me of just how good this band really was. Not just Peter Garrett as the singer. I saw them several times in the 80’s and 90’s.
saw them 32 years ago in Auckland, then 16 years later in Sydney, and last month (16 years on) wth my 11 yr old son in Atlanta - still the best live band and still as great as ever.
Ah yes, the Oils flat-chat, a force to be reckoned with - and playing one of their early powerhouse pub-rock classics. I wasn't amongst the lucky ones to have attended this historic gig, but we watched it on the telly in Brisbane, and my brother taped it on a Beta VCR.
Stil remember watching this on that historical Saturday night, and having our minds blown that we could listen to it in stereo hi-fi in simulcast on JJJ radio.
This is one of the greatest ever live songs Peter Clifford’s bass,PGs singing,Rob’s drumming,Jimmy and Martin on those axes The Oils were at the peak of their power in this one
Ive had the pleasure of watching Midnight oil live all around Australia, always awesome, most memorable was in Hobart, not many people attended the concert, so Midnight Oil played for free, so then the place was full , awesome music, awesome people, always brings a smile to my face when their iconic music is played!!! Thank you midnight oil.
Midnight oil deserves to be in the rock and roll hall of fame. So sad to see some of these other hollow acts in the hall of fame and midnight oil isn't. They've more than earned it.
There is such an immediately noticeable energy which Midnight Oil had from the first note to the last. An instantly recognizeable sound, unique and stimulating. An amazing live band and most assuredly in the top ten Australian bands of all time.
I'm going to see them again at the end of the month and can't wait, although, if I could be transported back in time, it would be to this concert in Sydney!
for the bass playing folks, playing along to James' Head Injuries tracks are a blast, especially this one. the tempo moves just fast enough to keep the song pumpin' (just like the tempo that Bones played it this last go 'round)...however....playing along with Giffo is more than a notch up (same blistering pace at wanda, parmatta park as well). love the outro improv he puts on each 4th measure on this one....beast for sure!
I taped it on video,,,, watched it nightly for the next ten years ,,,lost it when I left the ex,,, damn,,,,, same tape I taped the Hunters Rage special on,,,double damn!!!!!!!
@yaelwass I have always thought the same thing, had a dance with pete a bit of a sing and left the stage, not too many bands would allow that either, it's a classic moment.
This just enhances my regretts of not seeing this band live, the closest I will ever get was when the 2 guitarists from the oils joined cold chisel for a song at the chisel concert last week at Brissy, it was brilliant.
Remember this was to celebrate 10 years of what used to be a magnificent radio station JJJ. Imagine the dross they'd drag out today for a 40-year concert. Frente?
I was at the newcastle earthquake gig and all the bands were there... But everyone was waiting for the Oils who came on last of course... Garret up on the scaffolding.. a big jump off the stage left Bin... guerrilla music.. but the fighting stopped I think Rob is still stirrin the pot though..
I swear I wake up EVERY SINGLE DAY and give thanks to sweet baby Jesus for someone having decided that it would be a good idea to record this gig.
Bru.. streight up... time to listen to this again.. thank me later

I think one of the main reasons why they had so much energy was because none of them were into drugs or drink .

Rob Hirst on the drums is so central to the oils sound. He is brutal on this song.
Great guest appearance from the audience. Adds to the performance and doesn't overstay his welcome on stage.
Garrett was always an accommodating host.
