This would have to be the best video I have ever seen on fixing anything. The audio is clear including description on the screen in words, very nice. The camera shots are perfect, easy to see. Just all around great video. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! I am a carpenter by trade only know a little about mechanic work, such as oil change, tires, brakes etc... so when my 2002 ford explorer sportrac started Rough idling and cutting off while idling, Naturally I took it to a "mechanic" to get it fixed.... smh, that was 4 months and 1400 dollars ago!! I have been to 3 different mechanics and replaced the MAF SENSOR 3 times, cleaned throttle body with sea foam twice, as well as changed plugs and wires and vacuum lines... the list goes on... yet my truck has the same exact problem it had 4 ms ago. so thank you so much for creating this video so that a carpenter like me could fix the problem.. lol, smh, my next step was find the ' mechanic work for dummies' book, lol. Amazing that 3 different mechanics did not realize it was a 5 dollar hose! SMDH...Thank you again
Great vid! Short and to the point. I changed my Ranger 4.0L PCV valve on the back of the driver side valve cover and ~3-400 miles later started having a rough idle while in-gear waiting at traffic lights. Quick youtube search - and this was the solution. Quickly found a Dry-Rotted Elbow (crack/soft spot facing down to the engine) headed to Autozone first thing tomorrow to sort this out. Thanks!
Mine idles at 3000 and stays there. Til i stop then drops to ,2000. Needed a lesson on vacuum lines.. video was quite helpful. University of you tube is awesome
If you followed the plastic tube to the back of the engine you'll see a rubber elbow hose that should be checked for cracks, then further follow the tubing behind the engine, it leads to another rubber elbow hose you should check too for cracks. This last elbow there is connected to the PCV Valve. That PCV Valve if not disconnected properly can crack the plastic port at the rear of the driver side valve cover. That's a lot of dollars to replace. I know, because of a carelessness of a mechanic, that valve cover replacement cost me a lot of money. That PCV Replacement should be done by a technician at the Ford Dealership, they know how to do the task properly.
I spent a fortune trying to fix this problem. First I changed the catalytic converter, then I changed the spark plugs and cleaned the injectors... nothing. Let's see if this solves the problem. Thanks for posting
Just wanted to say I’ve done my spark plugs and all three 02 sensors on my 2002 ford ranger edge it’s a 4.0 L V6 but this is exactly my issue thx again
This is really useful to see thankyou. I didn't know this could be the problem or how to fix it. I'll give this a go! Thankyou, your video and presentation is very good and clear and nice to watch.
I added some Amazon affiliate links in the description, if you will click through them to buy parts for your project I would appreciate it! It helps me make more videos! Thanks!
Rough idle, wants to seize or stall at intersections. Im going through the motions of finding the problem. Already did an oil change, cleared any potential water from gas tank, my next step is to check pcv valve. I really hope this is the issue. Your video helped me gain a better understanding of what to do and what to look for. Thank you
98 explorer v6 sohc 233333 miles, exact same issue, collapsed hose going to pcv value. idle from 700 to 500 at stop lights, rough idle, up and down rpm only at idle. happened after value cover gasket job. unfortunately i replaced iac valve and dfpe first at $137 . Finally the vehicle rough idled in my garage and I found the collapsed hose after months of hating stop lights. then i found this video. thanks
Your engine is very similar to my 4.0L engine on my 02 Ford Ranger, XLT, so I'll be checking out this hose being my truck is 19 years old, but very well maintained. That's for the tip.
So my ranger had a high idle I replaced the IAC valve , TPS sensor Cleaned throttle body and maf I just now seen this and check and I believe my hose like in the video is gone bad
Im going to replace it tomorrow morning as soon as I buy some pvc hose from Autozone . The elbow type is crushed like sucked in and whistles but I didn’t see a leak when I sprayed water with soap I’ll see tomorrow if replacing that helps
If it is flat it may be stopping the vacuum from going where it needs to go! It will not hurt to fix it for $5 and it will probably help! Thanks for watching! I hope it helps!
@@heathputnam9524 yes it’s flat , I have to squeeze it to have it flow , I could’ve done this from the beginning I seen so many videos and just right now found yours . Thanks man you rock seriously
I had a bad O-ring on the PCV valve fitting where you connect the hose to the nipple. I used a smoke machine to introduce smoke into the intake manifold and the smoke leaked out around the nipple The result was a vacuum leak that I was able to repair with a $0.50 O-ring from NAPA.
just fixed my tacoma with rough idle after replaced a cracked and swolen pcv hose. also replaced pcv valve first but didn't replace the hose still had the rought idle until i replaced the cracked hose.
Thanks for the video I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with a rough idle and I just spent hours replacing the spark plugs and it's still there maybe this will fix it
I have a 1998 explorer sport. It's a 5 speed. If I Rev the engine an get off the gas. It acts like it wants to stall. Rpm's drops low to a point almost chokes out. Thx for the vid an the info
Just bought a 96 explorer with 130K miles in 2024, should I change that hose as well as the one beside it as preventative maintenance? Or just wait til it fails?
This vacuum leak will not always pop a code or engine light, but will make your truck run very rough. Mine had no engine light on. Thanks for watching.

Where can I find these hoses on the 4.6 v8 2002 explorer? Any help would be appreciated:)
Is this the same ubication of the pcv valve??
Thanks very helpful

What is the name of the hose you need to replace
What’s the thinner hose right above that one

What is that connecter at the top left of the screen??
Would this issue cause MAP sensor or Fuel pressure regulator sensor codes?
It definitely could. Thanks for watching!
Can that tune also cause air and fuel ratio problems?
It can... also rough idle and other problems. Thanks for the comment!
thank you bro 👍

great video, what year Explorer is that, and is it the same fir SOHC engines?
Looks like a SOHC

My 04 has a hissing sound when I accelerate and now it is barely accelerating when I first shift to drive could a vaccume leak be the cause?
Yes it could be a vacuum leak! It will affect performance and can make a hissing noise if it gets s large enough!
Shop told me.my trans is gone should.i take it somewhere else or dump it in the Pacific ocean?
Does pcv valve cause a burning smell
Stick a rag in the oil fill tube so nothing drops in there.

Yes it is!

Josh Poling this is a fix for 99-05 as far as I can tell

A 96 would probably have the pushrod (OHV) 4.0, a totally different motor
