- With the help of my family, we are setting up a vintage floor loom in our living room! We don't have a manual for her, and she hasn't been put together since we moved 2 years ago. Do we even have all the pieces? With a 60" weaving width, 4 shafts, 6 treadles, and an overhead swing beater, she is pretty huge. However, I think she will fit... if we put her in the middle of our living room! Let's welcome "Bertha" back to the fiber fam!

O dear, I had a small mental breakdown when I saw all the peaces 🙈 Making a mental note to myself: first get a bigger house, then maybe a floor loom. I know this is an old video, but I just happened across it, and it was real nice that your husband was involved, mine runs and hides and isn't interested 😁. The Loom is huge! I hope youve managed to make a heap of things on it, I've got an upright 2 shaft tapestry/rug loom and a lovely 4 shaft lotus loom, I do have a large 16 shaft dobby loom I acquired from one of our Tasmanian universities when they stopped having the course in textiles, but that's still in bits, which I'm hoping to assemble soon. Your current loom to space ratio is similar to mine. I’m getting rid of my dining table and moving my family into a corner. Your husband’s commentary makes me laugh because my husband was the same. My husband said “90% of the house is for crafting” 😂

Your fellow looks like the Canadian Comedian -Drew Carey from Whose Line Is It. It was fun watching you work together to assemble this huge loom. You called her Bertha My grandmother had a giant loom she called The Clare made out of maple wood when I was growing up and I bought a Dorothy loom from the Quebec company Leclerc before I had kids. Love watching your TH-cam channel. Your smile and laughter make my day.
We have identified her as a Binder Loom which would date her to Mid Century coming from California, USA. What should my first project be? A fall table runner? Fabric to sew a vest? Curtains?
So many choices! Start with something small and fast to get used to her again. I'd love to see you make a table runner.
Are you using your own spun yarn to weave with? Hope to weave soon- some dish towels for Christmas gifts.

Stockton Ca made sure many school districts in the area had at least 1 of his looms. I found 1 in a junk pile behind a school and also bought a beautiful 4 harness from him in the 80's.

So happy to find your video. I have what I believe is a Binder loom that I want to refurbish. We put her in our truck, so she is assembled, but I'm very intimidated. She is an 8 shaft 10 treadle and has a second back beam (that huge round thing!). Mostly she just needs cleaning and tightening, I think. The lady I bought her from had made a beautiful coverlet. I'm not a very experienced weaver, but this was an incredible opportunity. Can't wait until I have enough courage to warp her. What makes us do these crazy things?!

Wow! Did you use plans to build it or design your own?
Designed my own, only had to order the reed from Woolery. 40” weaving 4 shaft 6 treadle can switch to counterbalance. Under $150. I want to tweak the gears for the beam, make it easer to advance the warp. I definitely surprised myself on this project!
Looking at tie initial setup made me have a bad flashback to the time I helped my brother in law put together an ‘easy’ swing set one Christmas Eve….😆😆 But it was a great help in helping me figure out what’s missing from an antique homemade loom that came my way without any instructions. What a beeeeeautiful loom though!
I just came across a vintage Toika loom. It was disassembled and I plan to put it together over Christmas break.

@@JillianEve It's excellent condition. I'm psyched about getting it set up. The previous owner bought it from her Finnish MIL who bought it brand new in the 80s in Germany.

Great video :-) I am a baby-weaver, just learning the ropes now, and I jumped at the chance to acquire a Dryad upright floor loom when a nearby small wool company was going out of business. Fortunately I didn't have to assemble it, but now "Cara" is sitting in my front room patiently waiting for me to figure out how to get her moving. :-D Sidenote: Wouldn't it be great if these old looms could speak? 1) to tell us how to get them dressed and moving, and b) to tell us about all the things they've seen and heard over the years/centuries!!
My 1940's LeClerc M counterbalance loom also came in pieces. I sold my dining room set to make a place for my loom. I downloaded the manual and started piecing it together. I had no idea what it should look like as I wasn't a weaver. This was an adventure for me.
I enjoyed watching you put yours together. BTW I paid $150 for mine. I hope you make more weaving videos.
I have recently acquired a beautiful, vintage, huuuuge, countermarch floor loom, somebody 30 minutes from where I live, was basically giving away, for 25 dollars. Been going through the process of setting it up, and carefully checking it over for damage. It is in startling good shape. Certainly some wear and tear, and in need of some TLC, but there's only one missing bolt, and nothing broken. I am amazed.

That was fun to watch! Your hubby is a gem and so patient too! I have a friend that is gifting me her old old loom, so I’ll be rewatching for tips when I put mine together, I can’t wait to get it! It will be fun to see you weave, what I’m most interested in is what you’ll use for the warp, that’s the choice I struggle with. Have fun!
What an awesome friend! I'm going to experiment with different warps too! My general advice for warp is worsted, not woolen. 👍

Mark Schwartz I don’t know, and my friend wasn’t sure either. She got it from her mom about 20 years ago and her mom got it from someone else 50 years before that! She thinks it’s at least 75 years old.
Your husband is awesome! If that was my husband and I had a huge loom like that- which needed to be assembled. there would be a huge part of the video edited out because of fighting and a divorce!!!🤣

When I got my 8 shaft Gilmore my husband transported it in the back of his big truck, but it was completely put together. I know for sure that if we had to put all the pieces together, after an hour he would have given up and used it for firewood. Soon after that I took a class by the Singing Weaver and realized if I wanted to weave her stuff, it would be easier to have a second back beam. So we transported it to Stockton, Calif. and the certified Gilmore people put on a second back beam and a little cradle in the front for my shuttles. By the time we transported it back home to Huntington Beach, his truck died and we needed to get a new truck. Oops!
The moral of the story is to have a husband who's good with his hands; that can put things together and you'll keep your vehicle. lol

I bought an ikea loom from some people, and they sent it tome in pieces I put it ttogether myself, it worked.

Yes I use my llama or alpaca wool that I spin with my spinning wheel😁
I have been given a 8 Shraft floor loom, made in Norway . I was told it was a 4 sharft . I have no room so its set up under my pergola .. luckly i live in South Australia and our rain fall here is very low
So glad you got the loom set up, I got a 36" Kessenich a month or so ago and I'm struggling with coming up with projects that make sense.

@@JillianEve It's a 4 shaft 6 treadle. Pretty sure, based on the maker tag, it's one of his earlier ones, probably 1970's. It's in really good shape for the age. I'm just having trouble coming up with an actual project that I want to do/finish. Had a couple false starts so far but husbands going to help me warp it tonight, hopefully 3rd times the charm.

I recently did something very similar. Traveled an hour and a half one way in the wake of Snow storm to get my first floorloom. Her name is Anna, she's gorgeous! Trying to figure out the back roller beam hook ups??? I think I'm missing a dowel or rod. It's a journey of love🥰

My daughter and I were gifted a loom 48" weaving length 8 shaft loom in March. The lady who gave it to me had bought it from its previous owner and had never woven on anything except a ridged heddle loom so she had no idea that when her son took it apart and brought it to her house and put it back together he did it backwards and obviously she never did anything with it so I had to figure it out on my own. lol Other than being 8 shafts it looks almost exactly like this one, mine has no markings either. I just now finally got the the braking system to work, and had to make some more tie up rods for the treadles. Now I am lashing on the warp and excited about getting to finally weave on it. One of my shafts is sticking though, should I oil it? I did not know who to ask until I saw this video and realized how much your loom is like mine. By the way mine is in the living room too.
I just got a used jack floor loom and it was mostly assembled, minus a few pieces. I was hoping you could let me know where the remaining pieces go
