if people have an opportunity to do a root cellar, they might be able to incorporate access to tie up the pedals, kind of like a drive over garage at an oil change shop. Maybe a split level in the basement with guide side rails to climb into that space.
Thanks for showing floor loom, find it interesting families in Europe used to have these set up part of the year and then taken down when not in use. Much attention to fabric quality : )
I can't imagine setting it up and taking it apart once a year!
I wanted a countermarche loom but decided the tie-up would be too problematic for my bad back, so decided on a Louet David. Keep us updated on your progress with the sectional warp, flying shuttle and different ways to adjust to tying-up your countermarche as you work on those. A comparison to the David would be fun to watch when you have time.
I think you made a wise decision in the David, it is incredibly easy to tie up in comparison to this loom.
There is a contraption you can get called the 20+ which pulls cords through to the back and you have a board where you do something and it effectively does the tie up for you. So that could be worth a look into before you dismiss your countermarch dreams.

Hi😍 just a tip when you tid up the threaddles you fix the cord unter the threaddles and pulled the thread thru the lamp and put the split in there it's much faster... If you want more tips and tricks I would love to help you😍 I have been a cm weaver for 15 years and can send you pictures 😍

I would love to hear a comparison of a modern floor loom to an older floor loom. I used to have a Glimakra Counter Marche but didn’t have room for it so I sold it and got a a much smaller floor loom. Perhaps one day I’ll have room for one, but I’d love to hear the pros and cons and am looking forward to seeing all you do with this new loom.

Great video! I have had 3 Glimakra's (a Standard, an Ideal, and a Julia), and have always wondered how a Varpapuu compared and differred. Very minor differences, judging by your video. Lovely Lee's Surrender, BTW!
If no one has told you by this point, when (not if; we have all done it) you forget the knee beam, there's an easy fix. Assuming that your knee beam is easily removable as is the case on a Glimakra. Siimply loosen your tension a bit, and slide your knee beam off the loom. Now bring it to the front of your weaving, under the warp, and take the tension completely off (a second person at the brake can be helpful here, but not necessary), and pushing the warp back toward the loom with the knee beam, re-install it as before. Your warp now goes over it as it should!

My 1918 Cherokee barn loom is very similar to yours except she only has 1 lam. No one around here has ever seen like it. She has the same jack system with the "Y" cord down the center, rear attached/front floating treadles, 8 shaft/10 treadles....but, only 1 lam for each shaft. Congratulations on your new CM loom, I hope you have many enjoyable years weaving on her. I've just purchased a Glimakra Julia CM loom here in the UK and had to wait 3.5 months for it to arrive in the country. I was interested to try the CM system but the space I have available is very small and so needed a loom that didn't take up more space than my 32" rigid heddle loom and the Julia was perfect for me in that respect. Look forward to seeing more videos on your new loom.

Ok here goes my adventure with building my counter-march 4 shaft loom,
I had dreamed about a counter-march loom for almost 15 years, and working
running around after my mother for 8 years.
So I decided to build it, at a size I had within my simple 1 bedroom unit, !0x12 foot square,
so I decided on 22in width, small but effective for myself, I can sew either by hand or use my deadly treadly,1918.
I got the wood, downloaded as many plans and drawings it wasn't funny, got a full size saw, then a full size drill, nuts,bolts and then finding the time to draw the plans, then cutting the timber.
so after 2008-2011 I got time and cut the wood, setting the project in motion , it took a week to cut and set aside, after another year I got time to put it together, then let the nightmare begin.
the heddles all made by hand 250x4=1000 all in lien and learning to, to attach and tie, simple.
then the jacks, 8 of them, then harness for the horses, 4 off them no 8 of them, then the center strings, making sure they are the same length, the strings to the jacks under the loom, simple yes? no!!, it was confusion abound for days, and one day it was done (4 days later).
Then I decide after understanding how, when, and why each piece fit together, the movement of the loom, totally amazed me how simple it was,( YES!!!!) I had done it, after almost 3 years I had a counter-march loom in my home.
Now the decision of what to do as my first project, now the problem,
Yes I've got Margret Porter-Davidson's book copy of the 3rd printing,
and there was one pattern I had to have, done ass a sampler, yes it was Lee's surrender!
Do we all do it when we get the loom of our dreams, the first project we do is lee's surrender!
I could not wait so I warped my threads threaded the loom with sewing cotton and got my 120 lien thread in royal blue and sat on my loom for another 22 days for my most beautiful sampler,
Dose life get any better then this, well because I weave cotton/silk/ aswel as lien, fingering weight wool, I have sheeting/toweling and dress fabric's and it was worth it to wait and build what I need, the next project is my big wheel spinet, I've got most of what i need to start.
Yes I still work 5 days perweek, enjoying this incredible life!

I want to invest in a loom before I retire and I’m thinking I want a CM loom, but don’t understand enough about the differences and have been looking for really good comparison info. I think Lee's Surrender would make a beautiful wall hanging! If you do get to a really wide piece and don't have the flying shuttle set up perhaps you can sit on one side, have someone on the other side and just send the shuttle back and forth to each other for the new sport of "tandem weaving"! 😃
I've seen them do that on the really big looms, weaving blankets at mills. I am keen to try out that flying shuttle though 😉

I see you already got advice about the knee beam. I have forgotten about it more than once, and am glad it’s such an easy fix!
If you are on Ravelry there are some great weaving groups there. There is a lot of great info in both the Warped Weavers group and the Glimakra group. (While your loom is a different brand it is similar enough that you will find a lot of help there.)
It is really easy to turn your treadle tie ups upside down, and have your fixed point under the treadles and your tie up (where you might need to adjust) on top of the lamms. You can even use a 10mm straight knitting needle to hold all of your tie up cords under the treadles, which means you can start setting up your cords away from the loom. I also suggest putting the treadles up on blocks (or a pile of books, etc) at the height you want them, then tying them up using that as your height guide. It’s helped me so much to get things set up at the height I want, and to keep things orderly as I go.

Greetings. I have made the same mistake on my countermarch, that is forgetting to bring the warp over the knee beam. I believe you can simply lift that beam out, loosen your tension and then slip the beam under the warp and put the beam back in place and retention. That is all there is to it! So simple. I have a Glimaka but not sure what yours is. Hope this helps. Also, if you do have as Glimaka make sure to put the locking pin rods in the horizontal jacks so they stay level when trying up.

Hi Kelly, you can take out the support beam and slip it under your cloth an slide it back. You have to loosen your tension a bit.

If this is like its friends you can have one long long cord per hole which goes from upper lam through lower lam to treddle. You need never remove it. You just move a peg to determine upper or lower being the one that moves. But have some sympathy my 16 shaft needs 256 cords :)
Btw that “support beam” is the knee beam
A lot of the suggestions actually say put your bench inside the loom and do the shaft threading and even reed threading at the back!

@@KellyCasanova yeah. Enough to make even chuck norris cry. That’s 512 pegs. 768 if you do the 1 cord method. That’s a lot of little plastic bits. I bought 400 but sadly really I need to buy more or something. What I think really has me is despite the cost of mine as it’s brand new. It arrives without enough things to use it. And. Its not just heddles. But no cords. No pegs. No beads or whatever other things you might have used before texsolv was a thing.
I don’t know if you have a basement under your studio, but having a trap door underneath the treadles might help you tie them. Likewise, building a platform for the loom to rest on, with the aforementioned trap door might be useful. You’d need a high ceiling and some way of making sure no one could fall off the platform…
No, there is no basement. Some other viewers have given me good ideas on tying from the bottom of the treadles up, rather than the other way around, which seems like a good idea to try.

When you want to change out the reed - say changing a 10 dpi for a 12 dpi - do you remove the entire beater from the loom to do the swap?
The top of the beater does slide up (though mine is very stiff). I only have the one sized reed and it suits me fine so I don't imagine I will buy any more at this point.

Hmm, that is very difficult to answer. Most of the weaving I do these days is for making classes, I don't get much time for personal weaving. If I'm making a class (like I am right now) I may spend hours a day at the loom, other times I may not get to weave for a week while I'm busy working on other stuff, mostly at the computer.
Did you by chance mount that tabby treadle upside down?
No, I checked and it's right side up. Thanks for the idea though 😊
