    I made a mistake in the video and said both s twist and z twist were counter-clockwise. Oops! The graphics are correct so you can look at those during the video, but to clarify, S=counter-clockwise; Z=clockwise. Happy spinning!

      I’m brave-new, and my one drop spindle class teacher said Z for knitting, S for crochet… but we were also ultimately making a two-ply. Anyway, now I’m confused. Help!

    It took me about 4 oz of hand spinning to figure out the backwards twist to draft. Until I figured that out there was a ton of overtwisting and frustration. Now everything is smooth sailing.

    Thank you so much for making this video. I have been saving up for over 2 years to finally get my own spinning wheel and all of the supplies needed to go with it. This video showed me the unnecessary items I really didn’t need to purchase right away (i.e. blending board, niddy noddy, etc.). You are so gracious for making these videos to help baby spinners. Thank you so much.

    This video helped me so much. The tip about untwisting the pinch point a little to draft out was just what I needed to see. Also, you showing how to check the twist angle was a "light bulb" moment for me. I had been wondering how to check the twist angle after seeing a spinning tool with the angles on it but hadn't gotten around to looking it up.

    Hi, I love your videos and the style in which you do them. I am confused though about knowing how much fiber I would need to purchase so that I have enough for a project. If I am knitting a vest and it says I need so many yards of, say, worsted weight, how do I determine how much fiber I need to buy in order to spin enough yarn for the project? I am, of course by this question you know, new to spinning. I have about 50lbs of Alpaca my son and daughter-in-law gave me. I have cleaned, carded, and am practicing spinning right now. This issue though just keeps me from thinking I can decide to make something of a larger scale other than mittens or a scarf. I do love your upbeat style. It's always fun to watch you. Thanks for all of the education on spinning you give.

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a complex question that requires a bit of math. If you spin a dense, thick yarn you will need more fiber than if you spin a soft lofty yarn even if the diameter and yardage is the same. The best thing to do is sample, swatch and test. Keep notes on each spin and it will help you know what you need for future projects. Happy spinning!

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The greater the angle, the tighter the twist, the stiffer the yarn. It also helps to keep consistency when you compare the yarn at the beginning to the yarn throughout the spin as the first bit gets covered up on the bobbin. 💜😊🧶

Still don't get the spinning angle card/ protractor process yet - looks a bit like hold yarn from top to bottom and slide it to the angle you want and tell yourself that's what you were aiming for....err...?!? More research needed here but would help if you could explain it a bit further? Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

  • @kikilusek

    Hello, thank you for the great video, I took a lot out of it :) you mention in the video that it's better to S-spin if you are making yarn for the knitting project - could you share why it is so? And how does it work when it is a plied yarn? Should I then Z-spin and then S-ply my yarn for knitting?

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Knitting yarn is typically finished with S-ply. Sometimes people will crochet with S-twist yarn and find that it gets splitty. If so, they can spin Z-twist yarn and see if that makes it less splitty. It isn't necessarily a rule to follow, but it is something that can have an effect on your final projects. For me, if I'm knitting in the round I will make sure my yarn is finished with S-twist so it doesn't split on me. I think it matters less with higher twist yarns but I like to work right in the twist tolerance of my fibers so I have lower twist for softer yarn and it can be enough to un twist while I work. I hope that helps! If in doubt, swatch and find out! 😊🧶

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! I should have clarified so thank you for asking! The rule about S to knit and Z to crochet refers to the final yarn direction. If you are plying, the individual plies will start out in the opposite direction. ❤

I thought that was a sign that the fiber was overspun; but you demonstrated that kinky is normal for an energized bobbin of yarn.

    Why is the twist angle important?

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Knowing the twist angle, and checking it as I spin helps me know that I'm staying consistent, and that my yarn won't end up too dense and twisty or too soft so it falls apart! 🧶

  • @ImGinaMarie
    @ImGinaMarie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm confused, at 1:45 you say spin counterclockwise for knitting AND crocheting but your little post it says, knit is S- counterclockwise and Z- crochet is clockwise. Then I notice you are spinning your single clockwise, I think you usually knit so are you spinning for crochet yarn here or planning to ply this single?

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I pinned a comment to correct my mistake. Sorry for the confusion. S = Counter-clockwise that I use for knitting, Z = clockwise that I use for crochet. The graphics in the video are correct. Hope that helps!

      I know several spinners who encourage people to learn how to draft with either hand! Even if you are left or right dominant you can learn either way, or stick with one. I'm ambidextrous so I usually just go for what feels comfortable at the time. I switch around a lot though. 😊

    Why is it better for z twist for crochet and S for knitting?

  • @fairybead
    @fairybead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I never knew that crocheting or knitting needs different spinning! Why is that? When you buy yarn at the yarn store there is no difference either.

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to do with the way the yarn twists around as it's worked. Plied yarn can untwist too, but singles yarns fall apart when they loose their twist so it's more noticeable.

    • @Bellbebell

      Just finished my first spun bobbin yesterday! I'm spinning on a Saxony wheel from the 1860s and I finally started getting the feel for how to get the yarn to draw onto the bobbin. My yarn is extremely over spun and uneven, but trying to go thinner has helped. Because my wheel is so fast (for me), I'm still working on drafting and keeping my wheel spinning by treadling. I have a lot of start and stop using my hand to get it going again.

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bellbebell lots of those old wheels spin fast and thinner yarn likes more twist so it will help your over twisting to go thinner. Keep practicing and you'll get it! 😊

    Thank you, thank you so much! I've seen this video several times, hoping to get a clue why I was over-twisting. I've been spinning since 2017, but I finally understand and can imitate your instructions! (I think this will also help me with my cotton spinning on my charka. I have the same problem.) I never trusted my singles, because they would break when I ply. I was improving, but... Now I decided to dye merino singles and ply them with (1) camel hair and (1) Suri alpaca. I wrapped three full spools around my Niddy Noddy. Only once was there a breakage and that was on the first spool. I'm so happy! I went back to this video again after watching your live streaming on what yarns to use when you are a beginner (2 yrs ago). I have/had problems with merino all along. With your explanation on micron, I understand now. Oh, one more benefit. I purchased some nice Merino/Targee Carded Sliver but with lots of VM in it. It was very cheap and the company clearly included it in the description. I tried different ways to lessen the VM, but the extra work wasn't worth it. When I do the long draw spinning your way, a lot of it flicks off just before it spins. That's the best way so far. I love watching your videos. Fun, entertaining and very informative. Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge. It's taken me a long time and my brain is finally absorbing the art of spinning.

  • @amandag5072

    Your drafting explanation here is really helpful. (I hadn't seen this video before). I've been having issues drafting, to the point of almost giving up. I knew I was doing something incorrectly, but couldn't figure out what it was. I'll have to go away and practice again after watching this and see what happens. :)
    Edited to add: It hasn't helped at all! I'm now ending up with an overtwisted mess which doesn't wind on the bobbin!
