- I finally did it! I had a better time warping my floor loom (Dolly) this time and weaving a traditional tartan (almost). I'm sharing the mistakes and what I learned. I have finally made peace with warping Dolly, and I feel like I turned a corner, and it took a WHOLE YEAR!

A TIP FOR NEXT TIME, from a longtime bagpiper and novice weaver: the Scottish Registry of Tartans will actually provide you with the threadcounts of any tartan in their database for free! You just have to register an email address with them, and they’ll happily send you the same documents that the professional mills use to weave genuine traditional tartan!

I am totally impressed. Kudos to anyone who knows how to use a multi-shaft loom. Just for your info, I live near Red Stone Glen Fiber Center which Tom Kinsley ( author of articles for Handwoven ) owns with his daughter Sarah. He is a renowned weaver and teacher. The center even has a retreat B&B for week long classes. Tom actually taught a novelty spinning class that I took early on my spinning journey and Sarah does all the rigid heddle classes ( took a few of those, too) Maybe you'll come out this way some day. Thanks for including all of us as you create.

My older sister did a DNA test recently from 23 & me. We were always told our heritage was primarily British. Her DNA test came back as 30% Scottish. Surprise! I'm love all plaid. Thanks for sharing this project!

I feel like I actually kind of understand weaving and looms after watching this! It turned out beautifully!!! In a time when so many things are manufactured I think those kinds of inconsistencies show the love that went into this 💕

Love your woven tartan! Decades ago I dated a Scot named John Murray. I needlepointed a pillow for him in one of the Murray tartans. Lots of history and stories behind the patterns.
Yeah, it's so interesting really. I've never really wanted to recreate a traditional fabric before, because I always want to make new things, but it was fun.

I love that you are weaving tartan. My husband has strong Scottish roots and mine are Irish and he has recently started weaving and wants to weave his own family tartan. This video was the first time I was able to understand the warping process (I am not a weaver!) because of the way you explain what you are doing. Thanks!

Oh, how long are they from the waist? Are they traditional? Fascinating.
They are from the bellybutton to the knee. Full 8 yards pleated 100% wool. Yes they are traditional we buy them from a shop in Scotland. And no we are not Scottish and don’t have a family pattern.

The finished piece is so pretty. I've been planning to weave the MacKenzie tartan for about a year now, even have the thread. The MacKenzies also have multiple tartans, so I asked my grandma which tartan we use. She was so excited to help me plan the project, she even brought out her tartan scarf that she had tucked away. Good luck with the next tartan and happy weaving.

I love the warping mill. I also love your dedication to accuracy and that scarf is incredible cool. I absolutely love it!!! I think your selvage is fine and it is home made and you are new with your loom so I would stop being so hard on yourself. No one would notice. I suspect there are no weaving police. LOL You Rock.

The finished cloth is wonderful, you have loads of patience. Years ago I wanted a loom, now I’m older, I think it’s too fiddley for me, so I’ll stick to spinning and knitting. Wonderful video.

The only weavings that I have done were several small to medium sized tapestry pieces about 40 years ago and some rag rug weaving on a large floor loom designed for that ( I did mostly long hall rugs and stair rugs so that I did not have to warp the loom very often) and those were done 45-50 years ago. I love watching you figure out the designs and make your pieces.

That’s so awesome and beautiful! As a 34% Scottish person, I love this. I used to read about tartans when I was a highland dancer, and they are fascinating. The “ancient” setts with the natural dyes are so cool.

Always inspiring. I've got my craft cave now, which means I can get my loom out of its box and give it a go, as soon as I finish the sewing wip covering my work table and I finish plying that same silk, seriously, that silk is taking forever and a year.

I have an Irish surname too and I would love to weave a tartan, I don't know why it didn't occur to me that that was something I could do. This was great and so helpful and made me way less scared of getting a floor loom because I have been so afraid of the warping process. It's on my to do list for next spring!
I was so scared of the warping, and I have messed it up every time in one way or another. I console myself with the fact that I make new mistakes. 😂😂
Omg!! this project is beautiful!!! I am soooo glad you talked about a warping mill today and showed us all how you did it. I bought a 38" RHL because your towel videos inspired me. An unexpected move later (thank work), I attempted to warp my loom and have failed twice because there tension. First attempt was in the hotel trying to direct warp, the peg flew off and the warp got all tangled. 2nd attempt was after I attempted to do a hybrid indrirect/direct warp from the bottom of the loom. Because of where the reed is my tension became super loose at the edge and I have spend 4 weeks (about an hr a day) and I still havent got very far and the more I try the more the edge gets loose. I looked up a warping mill but the few videos I found didnt go into details on how to incorporate that cross area when on the loom. Just that it is important.
I feel so much better about getting a warping mill now. Because I really want to make dish towels

That warping mill looks very comfortable to use as opposed to leaning over a warping board. Also, those colors look so nice together ❤ 😍
I liked it. Not sure I'd want it for my rigid heddle, but for the floor loom it was pretty slick.

This came out beautifully.
I'm still struggling to get into weaving. I just had to cut the warp on my Ashford 16" because the threads were messed up. Seeing this gives me hope that some day I'll get the hang of it. Can't wait to see your colours.
Honestly, the rigid heddle loom took me a while to feel like I had mastered warping, and then I went through the same thing with Dolly. But I'll say once I developed a method that worked for me, it was all a lot more fun.
so very pretty, I love it! I've been collecting the plaids from GK Textiles to make some history bounding/Outlander inspired skirts but have yet to begin any of them. I just stroke the fabrics and call them 'my precious', lol. But these colors and the pattern you have for John's tartan are absolutely beautiful.

It looks like it warped up pretty easily! I have a fiber artist friend who has a big floor loom and she told me she HATES to warp it! Very pretty colors. I should make one for my husband who's Scottish mothers maiden name is Hyslop. Project for the winter!

Hi this in my eyes is an amazing process. OK Im not into weaving and most likely never will. This wraping and calculating stuff scares my to death and I must commit, that you took me quite well through those tricky parts of the process. Thank you for that. The tartan wrap turned out beautifully and if you would knit such a thing Im convinced not all stitches would lool like the same. How ever if you look at it looks even awesome and you put all your love in it....you never gonna find something similar if you look out for an industrial one. Kind regards Bille

I'm working on a winter hat with the Juanita color way. I keep thinking I have went too far, my husband keeps pushing me along saying you do big.. Yeah. Big. Toboggan. Big. rofl. Thank you for posting this, I have been so curious about tartan after doing our family genealogy. My clan is Scott. Which has 16, yeah... 16 different tartans. My son wants a kilt and until I have knowledge on twill this is a no go for me. I know some reading is in my future. Your project is absolutely beautiful!
So you understand, there's a point where you just pick the tartan you like best that goes with your clan 😂

What a coincidence! My son actually wanted a kilt for Christmas, but my loom isn’t that wide (plus it would be like an 8 yd warp), so I decided on a scarf - Ferguson tartan. I’m still waiting on the yarn. I jus got notice today that the back ordered colors are on their way. Hope mine turns out as well as yours!

Loved this video. Have only started weaving this past summer and have not done anything intricate yet, but one of my goals is to weave my children’s family tartan. I even ordered a sample online to be able to count the threads, etc. Yours is gorgeous btw.

The Clark tartan looks very similar to the St. Andrew's Tartan of the kilt I had when I was about 10, the colours are almost the same. Many clans have multiple tartans, some worn for more formal wear. I used to work in a kilt store in Edinburgh which had a registry of the different ones, so I often would talk to customers that were looking for their roots.
I've learned a bit about tartans during the process. It's so interesting.
You should be proud! It is perfect. I wish you would have shown threading the yarn thru heddles. Just because I am not familiar with floor looms. I have a rigid heddle.

I was just given a warping mill. I would love to see you use yours for dishtowels and then warp on to the rigid heddle. I'm still learning how to use mine.
Well, I think I will still be using my warping bar for my rigid heddle loom. It's much simpler to warp with, but not really suited to a floor loom.
That’s a beautiful scarf! I love the blue tartans, most of my family tartans are green-based. Some of the city tartans are pretty wild looking too, Glasgow is quite distinct. COP26 (the current UK climate summit happening in Glasgow) has its own tartan to symbolise aims and hopes for the future of the environment, and in 2012 a Scottish Islamic tartan was designed. It’s a rich cultural history.
