Unbalanced Weaves on a Counterbalance Loom. This week, I'm talking about weaving unbalanced weave structures on my Leclerc Mira II counterbalance loom and how the shed regulator accessory works to help improve the experience. I'm also talking about one of my newest rabbit holes... waffle weave.

Thank you for a clear explanation and actual demo of how the shed regulator works. I have a CB loom from Leclerc and I am pretty sure I can add it to the loom. Unbalanced weaves are a struggle at times.

Excellent explanation but what I can't find anywhere is a conversation about how much effort it should (or shouldn't) take to drop 3 shafts. I recently purchased a shed regulator kit for my 48" Fanny and though I absolutely get a better shed the effort is still substantial.
LOOK AT THAT SHED! Thank you so much for demonstrating how the shed regulator works, I've wondered with a counter balance loom how it works when using weave structures other than plain weave and 2/2 twill. ENJOY the PLAY TIME at the LOOM. What am I playing with? Turned taquete weave structure. From the May/June 2019 Handwoven issue is a turned taquete
dish towel project. So now I'm going to dissect the structure and try to weave fabric with thicker yarns, keeping the circles approximately the same size. Play time for me too!

the assembly instructions for my early 50's era m-series Leclerc loom includes a tip about using a small block to raise the harnesses for unbalanced weaves, even specifically mentioning waffle. thanks for showing the shed regulator in use!

Leclerc should really ask you to be their ambassador. I finally understand how the shed regulator work. I wonder if the shed regulator is Leclerc’s patent?

Thanks so much for this episode. I am excited to have the shed regulator explained in depth. I am also excited to see what happens with your experiments in waffle weave. I recently completed a waffle weave blanket for my granddaughter and was not pleased in how it turned out so am anxious to hear how others do it. I was confused with the options of threadings, with 4 point vs 5,6 point threadings and I guess I picked an unappropriate threading for the 4/8 cotton I used. I feel my 6 yr old granddaughter will constantly be pulling threads on it. I also realized the importance of a consistent beat with this structure. Will be waiting for your next video, keep on, am loving these little snippets of information.

LOL..I just tried to do waffle weave tea towels on my counterbalance.I knew ahead of time it most likely wouldn't work, but I had to see for myself. Sure enough too small of a shed, and hard to treadle. In the end ended up retying my loom and wove some tabby and rosepath. Now I am getting ready to warp up some rosepath rag rugs.Thank you for the demo on the shed regulator, I've read about it. However seeing it in action made a huge difference. I love waffle weave, I wonder what Krokbragd would be like with the shed regulator ? I'm going to try that on my rigid heddle hopefully this Summer. Love your videos, and the colors you choose.
Love the gradient waffle weave idea - I think you’ll only get the effect on one side though. My old counterbalance loom doesn’t have a shed regulator but I might try raising/lowering the shafts for 1/3 or 3/1 twills to see if it makes a difference. Great video 👍.
For sure! If you are only weaving 1/3 twills or 3/1 twills, then raising or lowering the shafts would definitely work. The shed regulator here is helpful if your weave structure requires to flip back and forth between these kinds of sheds :) Thanks for watching Ella!
I am really interested in this shed regulator. I have a non standard counter balance loom. and would like to weave krokbragd on it. Would a shed regulator help? or can krokbragd be woven on four shafts?anyy hel with this would be most helpful.I like your videos very much, they are very clear and you have a really pleasant voice and dialect.
Do you weave linen thread? I want to hand knit some linen but do not know what linen soukd be strong and hard-wearing.
TH-cam played this randomly.. but I wonder which do you like more counterbalance or countermarche? But is this informative of something I didn't know anything about the regulator!
I like countermarche looms for the big shed and the functionality but they seem to always be larger and more expensive. Counterbalance looms feel like a good medium of size, complexity, and affordability. 👍
@SweetGeorgia So the counterbalance does not have a shed like the countermarche? I really want a loom with a great shed. Thinking of making my own :)
Thank you for explaining and showing how the shed regulator works. Looking forward to seeing your waffle weaving. I’m in the process of refurbishing an older Glimakra counterbalance loom and can’t wait to warp up my first project. Any recommendations?
Thanks so much June! How exciting to have a Glimakra to weave with! With a brand new loom, I generally suggest putting on something like a short and small warp to test drive your loom and make any tweaks or adjustments before you move onto a bigger project :) good luck!
so the regulator will either raise or lower the whole warp, depending on which direction you turn it?
That’s the idea! I find in practice the effect is not dramatic, it’s quite subtle, but it works ☺️
My mother used to weave as well as spin her own yarn. I enjoyed your informative video. I myself have enjoyed a life of knitting; hence the question. What is the pattern of your cardigan and the yarn and colour?

Thank you for the clear explanation of the shed regulator. Id love to see a picture of the waffle weave towels. I have a opportunity get an old Leclerc Fanny 36” loom but it doesn’t have the shed regulator. Would you still recommend it?
I would still recommend the Fanny loom. I have a 27” Fanny at home without a shed regulator and I love it. It’s like my favourite loom right now. But I’m mostly weaving balanced weaves right now too. All depends on what you want to weave ☺️

So I got the loom. All it took was borrowing a van and driving 2.5 hours on a moment’s notice. It looks like it was made in the 1950’s. It has the old wire heddles. Would you recommend upgrading to different heddles, if so, what kind? I still have to put it back together, hopefully, I won’t have a problem
@@stephaniekowals5154 yes my Fanny is from the 1960’s and it works great! After I got it, I spent about half a year weaving on it as-is, including the original wire heddles (mine weren’t rusted). I did use a new reed though. And then over time, I switched to the Texsolv heddles and then ended up completely sanding down and restoring the loom. I don’t think it’s a necessary step, it was just something I wanted to experience. If you do take anything apart, just take lots of photos beforehand so you know how it goes back together 😆
