You know, I always feel like theres one thing these analysts forget with great players. It's the spirit they bring to the team. It seems like if you talk to any Raider in that era and they not only loved Snake, but they believed in him. While I think many quarterbacks on this list have earned their stripes with their respective teams. The way these guys talk about Snake is that they will go to war with him. I am never assuming they were perfect, but some of the most hated guys on that 70s Raider team praise him. He was definitely clutch, I would say more so since he called like 80% of his plays, but for his coach and players to rally behind him without question, thats something not many people in general can do. I believe actions speak louder than words, and Snake exemplified that. But it is another thing to have everyone believe in you without question. Obviously I wasn't there so maybe some of my opinions are wrong. For the kind of leadership Snake portrayed (not by his words but by those who played with him) that is remarkable.
To answer Jim Mandich, I'd take Snake Stabler over overrated Brady or Peyton Manning any day. Brady would fold like a cheap taco if he had to play against the 70s defenses. Peyton had a ton of big games where he failed to show up. I'd easily take Snake over both of them
they were not weaker nor slower, especially in terms of "on the field" football speed (as opposed to 40-yard dash speed). They hit just as hard, and the QBs had far less rules to protect them like they have today. Go watch Mel Blount or Jack Tatum slam receivers on their heads, or watch the hits that the QBs took in the 70s...and then tell me that they were "weaker and slower" back then
Yea, to this day I seriously wonder just how good both Brady and Manning would have been had they played in a much more physical era of the NFL. I think Brady still could have been good, but not as good as in this tissue soft league now. Peyton Manning? Yea, I think he would've had a decent career due to his smarts as a QB, but being smashed constantly be defenders would have messed with his physique to the point he'd have quite a few 3+ int games. So yea, I give more props to Stabler being able to not only go toe to toe with the Steel Curtain, but even beat them too.
