Bradshaw always includes Kenny as one of the greatest all-time and so do I! He could always find a way to win the close ones. The NFL changed the rules because of his ability to bend 'em. Definitely underrated. I would take over any of the Mannings, Elway, Marino, Brady, Fouts, etc.

He did experience some trauma though. His mother and stepfather were killed in a multivehicle accident in the early 70s driving from Seattle to Arizona to visit him during spring training. He had both legs amputated in the early 2000s as a result of complication from Type I diabetes. The most egregious case in any sport that I know of is Dave Parker in baseball. He was a misanthrope. He allegedly disliked white people and probably didn't get along with anyone that well. He missed parts of two seasons because of drug use but still managed more than 2700 career hits. I don't care about his social relations or personal failings. He played baseball and was one of the most feared hitters of his era. He was a big man who prioritized maintaining his quality as a hitter over power production. He won two batting titles and an MVP award during his career. I am sure other people have their candidates, as do I. But Parker clearly belongs. That's what the veterans committee is for.

Madden also had a funny story about Marv Hubbard. Hubbard used to go around breaking windows everywhere he went. The biggest challenge as far as getting him ready to play was making sure he didn’t get hurt, or arrested, doing his favorite thing

I saw them and ran ahead like an idiot with my film camera, rounding corners to load film and get a picture of them. Kenny's buddy said, "Come here. I will take your picture with Kenny." I told Kenny, "I am a UGA grad who never liked Bama. I never much liked the Oakland Raiders. But I was always a Kenny Stabler fan." Somewhere in a shoebox deep in storage I have a photo of Kenny with his arm around me, both of us grinning ear to ear like we were best friends. I gotta dig out that photo when I have a week with nothing else to do.

Another great Stabler story is the one he told in his autobiography about the time the Oakland police called him in the middle of the night and told him they had Raiders' defensive player John Matusek in custody and asked Stabler to come down to the police station to pick him up. When Stabler asked what Matusek had done, the police told him they found Matusek wandering around shooting street signs with a .357 magnum!
Nah, the gun was found in his car. .44 magnum. I read the story in the newspaper when it HAPPENED. Matu was asked why a big guy like him needed such a big gun. He replied, "I live in Oakland."

Stabler told them that he'd rather room with Charles Manson!, (2) when Matusek came to the Raiders for his first practice session with the team in Santa Rosa, California, he came onto the practice field riding on either a horse or a moped wearing a German WW1 spiked helmet. Raiders' Managing General Partner Al Davis was standing on the sidelines next to LB Ted Hendricks and remarked, "I don't know about John"! Hendricks replied, "Al do you really think one more is going to make any difference!?" ( meaning, of course, that one more screwball on a team of screwballs wasn't going to adversely affect that team at all - in fact, it actually probably enhanced that team!, and (3) the story "Snake" told in his autobiography about how either TE Dave Casper or defensive lineman George Bueller loved to play with remote control cars. One day when head coach John Madden was in his office at Santa Rosa sitting at his desk, Casper or Bueller sent a remote control car with a bunch of lit fire crackers attached to it into Madden's office and sent it to stop right below his chair. I was married to a MC pilot, student @.Pensacola. A beauty Queen background, I was placed in charge of the “Miss Pensacola” pageant. Actually got Kenny’s #. Called, to ask him to be a judge in the pageant… he answered the phone!!! Was a delightful, humble judge and person ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I had the pleasure of meeting this man a number of years ago in a restruant he owned in Alabama. Came to our table and chatted for about 20 minutes. It was a true pleasure and total enjoyment.
Yeah... "The Snake" He was GREAT!!! One Helluva Quarterback!!! And a Great Storyteller!!! He was one of the original group of scrambling, improvisational play quarterbacks. Always Fun to watch!
This one time, the snake was doing an auto signing at a local sports shop in town but our family had some other commitments at that time and couldn't attend. My mom called the guy putting it on and for a fee of `i was never told how much` we got to go to this guys house and meet Kenny before the auto signing event. I had worn my high school section championship football ring, and he had his super bowl ring on, and we were sitting on the couch watching college football (LSU home game if I recall) and comparing rings. I will never forget that moment in time. I think I was too young to fully understand and appreciate it then but I certainly do now. He was so kind and patient with me and my little brother. Absolute legend. RIP
Marv Hubbard was awesome. I remember meeting his Mother when I was camping with my buddies in Allegany State Park in New York. She was such a sweet lady and made sure all three of us young guys went to church on Sunday. Truly a wonderful person.

I am so glad I could watch Kenny Stabler lead that great Raiders squad in the 70's. You knew when he crouched to take the snap that more often than not they would advance all the way to the end zone, whether it was at the start of the First Quarter or in the last two minutes. Great memories and stories from a master of his craft.

I remember watching all these guys when I was a little kid. They were all great players. Kenny Stabler was so fun to watch. I had no idea he was this funny.
Wouldn’t it be great to have Stabler being interviewed now? Great story teller and a pretty damn good quarterback. I’m 70 so know all of these players but grew up in the Midwest so only got to see those teams if they made the playoffs.
During dad’s decades with the Cowboys, we saw Kenny/Snake come through a few times with the Raiders, Oilers and Saints. Mr. Stabler would gather us kids together putting out a circle of chairs and tell us stories much like this one. He was an absolute great and fun guy just like you see in this discussion. Years and years of fond memories 😊 I miss you dad 🙏
As a 56 yr. old lifelong Bengals fan, I actually loved Kenny Stabler. There was just such a coolness about him, even as a 7yr.old....I sensed he was a *bit* different and him being LH made him that much cooler to me. Thanks Snake! *BOOM*

As I got older and learned more about Football and watched more Football I realized just how good The Snake was. He called all the plays for the Raiders.
There was no other quarterback you’d rather have than Snake for orchestrating a game winning drive. Just sit back there and pick you apart. One of the great characters of the game as well.
Man you got that right. Even though I'm from Ohio and was a super browns fan, when cleveland wasn't playing if the raiders was playing that's where my TV went ! Stabler, blanda, branch, Casper, Freddie biletnikoff, Lester hayes. Damn those were the days ! Grass fields, less penalties, no replays no gloves lastly most players hated the other teams. No hugs after games.
Snake was one of a kind. I shook his hand once at the Flora-Bama, forget the year...early 90s. Mullet toss. If you never been to one do yourself a favor, it's a good time. There isn't a whole lot to love about getting old. But being old enough to have been able to enjoy the NFL in the '70s is one damn thing. These were my heroes, as a kid, and I'm glad I was there to experience it. Personalities like Ken Stabler are a thing of the past. Nowadays the professional athlete is either dull as hell, spewing the "gotta play it one game at a time" "leave it all out on the field" bullcrap, or they're abusing women, and subsequently being signed to record breaking contracts (I'm looking right at you, Deshaun Watson). Seems like there's no middle ground anymore. But I'm probably just a grumpy boomer. So take that for what it's worth. And while you're at it, get the hell off my lawn.
Sadly even Mr. Davis gave in to the modern game. Why he signed Jamarcus to a guaranteed $40M is still beyond comprehension given the way he treated Mike Shanahan. Just a reflection of today's game. Wasn't perfect then, but what player works a second job in the off season? The major sports are Uber flush with cash & that's why the game is so different. $3B Patriots...$3B Boys. Even the Raiders have hit $1B. No wonder QBs are off limits. 17 games? Quality has suffered. If Cosell were alive he'd have a stroke.

It has been so many years since I read Stabler's autobiography that I had forgotten that it was Ted Hendricks that rode onto the Raiders' practice field wearing a WW1 German helmet not John Matuszak. But the portion of my comment about Al Davis and Ted Hendricks chatting on the sideline about Matuszak is correct.

I was married to a MC pilot, student @.Pensacola. A beauty Queen background, I was placed in charge of the “Miss Pensacola” pageant. Actually got Kenny’s #. Called, to ask him to be a judge in the pageant… he answered the phone!!! Was a delightful, humble judge and person ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I had the pleasure of meeting this man a number of years ago in a restruant he owned in Alabama. Came to our table and chatted for about 20 minutes. It was a true pleasure and total enjoyment.

Yeah... "The Snake" He was GREAT!!! One Helluva Quarterback!!! And a Great Storyteller!!! He was one of the original group of scrambling, improvisational play quarterbacks. Always Fun to watch!
This one time, the snake was doing an auto signing at a local sports shop in town but our family had some other commitments at that time and couldn't attend. My mom called the guy putting it on and for a fee of `i was never told how much` we got to go to this guys house and meet Kenny before the auto signing event. I had worn my high school section championship football ring, and he had his super bowl ring on, and we were sitting on the couch watching college football (LSU home game if I recall) and comparing rings. I will never forget that moment in time. I think I was too young to fully understand and appreciate it then but I certainly do now. He was so kind and patient with me and my little brother. Absolute legend. RIP

Marv Hubbard was awesome. I remember meeting his Mother when I was camping with my buddies in Allegany State Park in New York. She was such a sweet lady and made sure all three of us young guys went to church on Sunday. Truly a wonderful person.

I am so glad I could watch Kenny Stabler lead that great Raiders squad in the 70's. You knew when he crouched to take the snap that more often than not they would advance all the way to the end zone, whether it was at the start of the First Quarter or in the last two minutes. Great memories and stories from a master of his craft.

Wouldn’t it be great to have Stabler being interviewed now? Great story teller and a pretty damn good quarterback. I’m 70 so know all of these players but grew up in the Midwest so only got to see those teams if they made the playoffs.

This Detroit Lion fan always enjoyed the Snake, Kenny Stabler, and the bad boys of Oakland, the Raiders.
During dad’s decades with the Cowboys, we saw Kenny/Snake come through a few times with the Raiders, Oilers and Saints.
Mr. Stabler would gather us kids together putting out a circle of chairs and tell us stories much like this one. He was an absolute great and fun guy just like you see in this discussion.

As a 56 yr. old lifelong Bengals fan, I actually loved Kenny Stabler. There was just such a coolness about him, even as a 7yr.old....I sensed he was a *bit* different and him being LH made him that much cooler to me. Thanks Snake! *BOOM*

The Oakland Raiders were EPIC battles against The Pittsburgh Steelers in the 70s and The Snake was awesome to watch in those Battles .

There was no other quarterback you’d rather have than Snake for orchestrating a game winning drive. Just sit back there and pick you apart. One of the great characters of the game as well.

Man you got that right. Even though I'm from Ohio and was a super browns fan, when cleveland wasn't playing if the raiders was playing that's where my TV went ! Stabler, blanda, branch, Casper, Freddie biletnikoff, Lester hayes. Damn those were the days ! Grass fields, less penalties, no replays no gloves lastly most players hated the other teams. No hugs after games.

There isn't a whole lot to love about getting old. But being old enough to have been able to enjoy the NFL in the '70s is one damn thing. These were my heroes, as a kid, and I'm glad I was there to experience it. Personalities like Ken Stabler are a thing of the past. Nowadays the professional athlete is either dull as hell, spewing the "gotta play it one game at a time" "leave it all out on the field" bullcrap, or they're abusing women, and subsequently being signed to record breaking contracts (I'm looking right at you, Deshaun Watson). Seems like there's no middle ground anymore. But I'm probably just a grumpy boomer. So take that for what it's worth. And while you're at it, get the hell off my lawn.

Sadly even Mr. Davis gave in to the modern game. Why he signed Jamarcus to a guaranteed $40M is still beyond comprehension given the way he treated Mike Shanahan. Just a reflection of today's game. Wasn't perfect then, but what player works a second job in the off season? The major sports are Uber flush with cash & that's why the game is so different. $3B Patriots...$3B Boys. Even the Raiders have hit $1B. No wonder QBs are off limits. 17 games? Quality has suffered. If Cosell were alive he'd have a stroke.

Stabler was a great storyteller. I could of listened to him all night over some cold ones. The man who looked over the playbook under the light of the jukebox. Players were built different.
