My fav QB of all time, and if he had played in this era with his 90s Broncos, they would have won many superbowls. He would have shattered many records.
People seem to forget that it takes a good team to win a SB, not just a QB alone. If Elway wasn't on those early Denver teams they would have been in the bottom 5 teams each year. He had an inept coach and below average players surround him because at that time the only way you were going to be good is if you were a big market team that had money to keep players around. Thats why there were only a handful of teams during that era the were really good and won numerous SBs. Very deserving of the #2 spot.
Besides, the Broncos schedule that year was not that tough. Montana and the 49ers were just the better team. Even Elway said, they were way over their heads playing against them in the Super Bowl.
Reeves was not an inept coach he was above average and and the Broncos had some above average offensive players and some great defensive players during their first 4 super bowl losses. That includes super bowl 12. That being said Elway carried them.
Best I ever seen play the game. He was a great, elite QB on average teams for 13 seasons. He didn't get his first elite team till his 14th season and he played 16
Man them 80’s teams didn’t even deserve to be playing in those Super Bowls and there’s no way they got there without Elway. Absolutely one of the greatest and if he had come along to the game in its current state and the way it’s played, he could of challenged for the GOAT status for sure.
I completely agree. The single best athlete to ever play the position, with the willpower and grit to will mediocre talent around him on offense to victory time and time again. No QB did more with less talent than Elway. No one. And that effin' arm, man...
If you ever look at opposing QB'S face if Elway had the ball late In the 4th Quarter, just scared as hell... he gave defensive coordinators nightmares 7 days a week...

@@rossb.4773 As a coach, Reeves used Elway skills to get to those 3 Superbowls in the 80s with an average team he had. He good success with the Giants, but couldn't beat the Cowboys in 93 for the division title, especially with Emmit Smith. He basically won it for them with one arm. He got lucky coaching the Falcons to Superbowl 33, the Vikings choked. With the Cowboys, he was a backup running back and an assistant coach with Ditka. He got a couple of SB rings from that, because they were a really good team in the 70's. Overall Reeves was a good coach but not great.
2:50 - Very lazy of Greg Cosell to include Super Bowl XXI against the Giants among his assertion of "the three Super Bowls where John Elway did not play well." Against the vaunted NYG defense, with zero running game to speak of, John Elway put up 225 yards of offense in the first half (and these are 1986 yards, unlike the video game stats of today's game). Unfortunately for the Broncos, this only resulted in 10 points, due to a 1st & Goal at the 1 yard line that resulted in three straight run stops & a missed 19 yard FG, and another missed 34 yard FG at the half. As a result, what should have been a 20-7 (or 20-9) score ends up being 10-9. Make no mistake, the Giants were unquestionably the better team, but it would have been interesting if they were put into a position where Simms had to throw, as opposed to having both run & pass at his disposal.
And SB XXII to an extent too. Elway dominated the Redskins to start that game, was making huge throws. Then it was like someone flipped a switch. He was in a tough situation, but yeah, he kind of sucked for the rest of that game. In SB XXV, he was just dominated in every conceivable way by the 49ers D, but still, not many QBs could play well against that Defense either.
The whole momentum of the game turned when the refs incorrectly called Clarence Kay's first down catch an incomplete pass. Elway was sacked in the end zone on the next play. Dan Reeves was the worst possible coach for a gunslinger like Elway to play for. Most predictable play calling in NFL history.
If Tom Shady had played back in the days of WR's being mauled by DB's and QB's being mauled by LB's, he wouldn't have survived his first preseason game. Tom Shady's bread and butter play is pass "interference" in the end zone and his go-to play is "roughing" the passer. If Montana or Staubach or Bradshaw or Elway or Marino or Tarkenton played today they'd be racking up 7000 yards and 70 TD's a season.
It depends on the team one would put him in. Brady with the 1980s 49ers would have success, just probably not the longevity he has right now. Put him in the early 1980s Giants or the Broncos team Elway plays for, Tim Couch would probably cringe and said, "I'm glad I wasn't in this guy's shoes".
I remember watching that helicopter run in the SB. When I saw it, I knew Broncos were going to win. He didn’t have to take that kind of risk for that play alone. But it was the kind of display that worked to inspire his teammates. It was a statement.

Well elway did not show up when it counted most against the 49ers in the superbowl 55 to 10 loss ouch!!!!!! He was a complete disaster and embarrassment!
With that team the broncos had, they were lucky to score 10 points. Nobody was going to beat the 49ers that year, they were stacked with talent. Even Elway said they were lucky to get to that super bowl, but they were in over their heads playing the 49ers.
It was a bad broncos team Elway carried them and so when they played the 2nd greatest team ever it just wasn't fair
LOL the fortywhiners had a superteam
BRADY IS BETTER, THIS GUYS IS A CHOKER
Xaverian3 Brady could never pull off "The Drive" or the Hail Mary vs the Redskins... Brady shouldn't even be on this list, Peyton Manning is more clutch than Brady.
Broncos13 Fan L manning threw a pick six to finish off the superbowl and got Elway is 2-3 and they both have gotten blown out on the superbowl they're chokers and overrated
Xaverian3 When u have one player on defense in Steve Atwater and then one player on offense in John Elway and u go to 3 Super Bowls? ...I'm sorry that all QBs can't have a GOAT of a coach and system and can't the greatest talent at WR in Randy Moss and probably the eventual GOAT at TE in Gronk
Xaverian3 Elway didn’t had any support look at what brady had
Brady had a better team than what Elway had in the 1980s.
clutch??? 3 blowout Super Bowl losses and 13-8 playoff record. Enough said.
Dallas LaBar During those 3 losses, what talent did he even Have? Sammy winder. MAYBE Mark Jackson. Elway had a terrible coach to start his career and carried those 3 Superbowl teams to the Superbowl against absolute juggernauts in the 49ers, Giants, and Redskins teams of the 80's
Cuz it's not a team sport were talking about I guess lol
14-7 playoff record.
A 14-7 playoff record is fantastic.
I love John Elway buy there is no way he is ahead of Joe Montana, the 49ers killed him and the Broncos in the Super Bowl.
How many hall of farmers were on that team? Montana was a system QB. Young proved that.
@@MatinAmerica Facts.
Joe Montana had Jerry Rice, and Roger Craig. John Elway had Bobby Humphrey and Mark Jackson. Yeah, that's a fair matchup.
