BUYING VS. COOKING: which ACTUALLY SAVES MORE MONEY?! | LIVING CHEAP 2019
Every since i'd quit my corporate job at the end of last year, i have been on a tight budget and have been living frugally. I am constantly scouting for good deals and looking for money saving hacks.
I have always been told that when living cheaply/ living frugal, the best money saving tip/ money saving hack is to cook meals at home - which is what i have been doing of late. What i have started to notice more and more is that there are really cheap meal deals & cheap eats in Sydney that really help save money. So i wanted to put money saving hacks for frugal living to the test: Is eating out really THAT expensive, and does cooking at home really save THAT much more money?
In order of appearance, these are the places that i visited for some awesome bargain cheap eats:
    1. Ikea AUSTRALIA big breakfast: $4 (ikea family price)
Free-range scrambled egg, bacon, sausage, hash brown and tomato
    2. Soy Cappuccino: $4.5 (ridiculous price i know)
Three Beans Rhodes, Waterside Shopping Centre
    3. Mappen Noodles Restaurant Sydney
    Beef Udon: $6,90
    4. Lim's Hot Bread
    Eastwood, Sydney
    Pork Vietnamese Roll - $5
What i found is that while cooking at home in all instances are indeed cheaper than eating out, the difference in the price always justified by the additional effort and time used to cook and prepare the food. I know this isn't what you'd call a millennial money saving hack, but i hope this video shows you some additional options to eat / things to cook and shows you how easy it is to save more money!
(p.s. i will be kicking my 'coffee shop only coffee' habit to the curb)
    ABOUT ME:
I'm a millennial who quit my corporate job in banking & finance in December 2018 to live life the way I want, everyday. I knew something wasn’t right when days all started to blur together and nothing stood out.
I want to see different places. I want to experience new things. I want to meet new people. I want to do something for the first time again.
This is the beginning of my journey to doing that, and to figuring out how I can generate income that will allow me to live life my way, every day.

This was such a fun video, speaks to my inner nerd.
    So many more factors though....
    1. Gas and electric cooking cost
    2. Lights, heat, a/c off when you're out eating
    3. Transport costs to go out
    4. Take away probably using cage eggs, really cheap meats etc.
    endless!

    Several questions:
    1) How long did it take you to find a parking spot at IKEA, run through the store and get into line? Locally, that is a MINIMUM of 25 minutes.
    2) Why instant coffee at home? It is certainly not cheaper and tastes a lot worse than fresh brewed coffee.
    3) If you are at an Asian store, why not buy a marinated carrots and daikon radish mix heich is the standard topping for a bahn mi sandwich and would provide the marinated taste to the sandwich. That is generally the same price as a cole slaw mix.

My wife can make a mean mapo tofu over rice with ground pork or chicken, silken tofu, hot bean sauce or non-bean hot sauce and green onions (optional) in less than 20 minutes and my son & I are happy for at least a couple of meals. She sometimes keeps cooked ground pork in the fridge to save even more time. For us, mapo tofu over rice is a fast comfort food like spaghetti & ragu is to many families in a time crunch.

Janice tip for home instant coffee
Put a spoon of your preferred instant coffee ,
2 spoon of coffee mate ( you can buy from Coles or woolies there brand super cheap)
Add the amount of sugar you like
    Put them in your mug
Add two teaspoon of boiling water and mix till it's nice and fluffy and creamy looking
    And then add your milk
And rest of the hot water
    And drink
Super yummy coffee made cheap at home 👌

depends on your equips. i am a pro chef. most of fried rice is so easy to cook at home. if you have some tips.
for example, if you have some frozen steamed fluffy rice(any kind of), eggs, spring onions and seasoning, you can make 10 dollers basic fried rice. if you have a wok, you can get 20 dollers fancy fried rice.

I buy a good jar of coffee and drink that at home. It's not as nice as good take away cappuccino or flat white.
When I'm really tight I buy ALDIs pasta, organic tomoatos, and a chicken breast. I added spices to jazz it up a little . Still its a boring meal. 😆 I used to make a huge batch and I could get two or three days out of it. Lol eventually I got so sick of it. Lol 😂👍

    1. What about travel costs... time?
    2. Is that not a nespresso machine behind you? A pod is like $1 no?
Anyways, my situation is a little different but he's my view... I'm single, and I do eat out alot because of work... but even when i'm at home, i generally eat out more as ingredients don't come in single portions... I also have a Mappen 5 mins drive away from me at Bondi Junction... and I spend around $10-12 each time... but if I were to make a chicken curry with rice, the stewed meat, or whatever (which leads to their variety lol) it would take me easily an hour... might be a cliche but time is money. Or meals like a good burger... you can't buy ingredients just for 1 burger.
But in saying all that, since we had a few lockdowns due to covid, I was at home alot more... and i cooked in bulk using previous example... I cooked japanese chicken curry (with onions, potatoes, carrots and rice using the japanese blocked curry), probably cost $20 so it's around $3-3.5 a portion... So in that sense yea cooking at home is cheaper and tasted better... as the hour that takes me to make it yielded 6 portions which I just put in the freezer and eat over a few weeks, therefore my time is worth less vs making just 1 portion.
Overall, it depends where you live and how accessible you're to "cheap eats" that's not unhealthy food like McDonalds... you went to the city, eastwood, rhodes/tempe ikea? That's alot of travelling.

I rather buy, here in the State's it a bit more convenient to buy than to cook. Especially where I live. There is melting pot of cuisines from all over the globe. From Korean to Cuban to Indian cuisine. It is insanity to think that I can actually cook half of these gourmet cuisines that I could have for a very low budget. The math does not compute. Coffee shops, at least here, are straight-up THIEVES. It's disgusting. It has kinda turned me on to tea. Black Tea in all its glorious forms. However, where I live I can get two breakfast tacos and a black coffee for $1.50. Cheap, Easy, and Drive-Thru!

If you can cope with milk, try your instant coffee with more milk...lots of milk.

Eunice Fung have you tried those satchel type of instant coffee. All premixed don’t even need to do anything. Just hot water, open the satchel and pour its content in. Stir. Viola!
