    In this video, I'm going to be documenting how much groceries cost in Sydney, as well as how much money I spend each week on groceries. I have definitely noticed impact of inflation... if things arent on special they are definitely noticeably more expensive!
    I'll also be sharing some superrr quick & easy recipes for the different food items we are going to be buying, so hopefully that gives you some inspiration on what to cook! !

    First of all, let me acknowledge that soooo much work went into this video guys. Janice deserves a round of applause and props for this. Second , impressive simple tasty cost effective meals, like wow. 3rd mince, rice & egg rocks. We have something similar in the Philippines but with raisins in the minde sometimes & fried bananas on the side. Last, I’m inspired to do a similar video but won’t go in depth with the costs coz so much work lol

    Always a good idea to buy some dried goods and canned food as back up (when they go on sale of course) because you never know when you need it. People end up spending more when they actually need to make an urgent stop at the supermarket!

    I Sleep and eat at weird hours and if I do have a breakfast it's either an Up & Go or Vegemite toast, sometimes I add cheese to the toast and grill it. Spaghetti bolognaise is a really cheap meal. I love Mexican but normally only buy the Old El Paso boxes half off, same as Up & Go's. Stir frys are also pretty cheap. Everything has gone up quite a lot.

    good way to save money is just make large batches of food and freeze them. ill cook up things like chilli con carne, taco rice etc, make a batch large enough for 8-10 portions with rice then freeze half of them and use the other half as dinner for the week. or you can freeze more of them and cook up something else to add a bit more variety. can usually end up with plenty of food that just needs to be zapped in the microwave for a few mins at $3-4 per serve.

    i used to buy the generic colesworth pasta and diced tomato combo. However listening to vincenzo plate, have since have switched up to better pasta. Buy Cucina matese from coles or Molisana from woolworths. it's only slightly more expensive maybe 1 or 2 dollars (stock up when on special 😀 for better bang for buck). Also switched out diced colesworth for whole peeled tomato. The combo of these two small changes (minor increase per serve) significantly better results.
    also i see your using the old "quick" version. Chuck the pasta in with the sauce to bind together. Add some pasta water to thicken and emulsify up the sauce (sounds counterintuitive but the starch from the pasta will thicken it up)

    try adding heinz ketchup to spag bol. It was my dad's trick to spag bol and it adds quite a bit of flavour. Also that isn't too bad, my partner and I spend $120 on groceries for a week and half for everything, fruit, veg, carbs/proteins + house things in South Australia. So Sydney isn't as bad as I thought in comparison, but housing and such must cost a lot more. Also a video recommendation could be a AMA for 2023!

    Super interesting video Janice, thank you for making it. Made me wonder how much I spend- I know it is quite a lot and that I spend more being one person because of having to buy in smaller quantities in order not to waste food (I can't store that much due to space constraints). I do know cooking at home is still so much cheaper than dining out would be- but your video made me think, how can I do it better to be more cost effective? I was impressed with your frugal and tasty looking/ healthy breakfasts.

    I'm from Greece and our eating habits are so different. We consume many dairy products and legumes like lentil, chickpeas,beans...etc....
    I would say that I spend around 40 euro.....I usually skip breakfast, I'm a vegetarian so I don't buy meat/fish which are more expensive than veggies...for dinner I usually eat a double cheese toast.....or a tortilla....or chips sometimes...
    Vegan products are a little expensive but I don't buy them every week...

    excellent presentation and wicked shopping, some of those prices! I reckon I am hard nosed but nothing like that. Spreading over several stores will do it I guess. As a single I budget $90 a week for total supermarket shopping. I found that to be a good average until suddenly it crept to $120+ I found I was buying a lot more snack foods and yummy stuff. I have cut this back now and back to budget. I am an old age pensioner so my budget must be tight.

I have been getting healthier food (organic if possible, pasture raised free range egg, very little carb, lots of berries, seafood and lean beef mince) and I have no time to shop around. Protein is so expensive too and I had been trying to increase my protein intake.

    @peterbreis5407 ปีที่แล้ว

    Janice, you have a remarkable commonsense attitude to life.
    We do things slightly differently. I'm European background, and you have the Asian predilection to cook fresh from scratch.
    I cook in bulk with variations. So I buy a whole chicken and break it down. Then take some of the broken down parts such as breasts, thighs drumsticks and freeze what I won't use in individual portions. Wings, necks and carcase go into the chicken/veg/minestrone pot. Maybe a couple of of portions will be turned into chicken + veg or rice or noodle or pasta or cous cous.
    I'll seal meals into 2 serve jars to refrigerate, or individual serve pop top glass containers to freeze and the balance becomes my current meal or meals for the day. The stored meals are quickly reheated or turned into other meals with enhancements, quickly, when I am in a rush.
    The break down proteins go into quick asian dishes like yours, using combinations of veg and noodles/rice. My favourite veggies I keep in my larder are wombok, bokchoy, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, carrot, leek, peas and eggplant, which can all be done many ways and flavour variations. Where needed I add umami with anchovies or sardines.
    $3 a meal would be more than enough for any of my meals. Many I'd say I do for half that. If you can cook and cook by feel rather than recipes, meals are varied, interesting and filling for very little.

      ah good question - I do have coffee in the morning most days - I sometimes use my aeropress, but other days I buy it from my local coffee shop

    This is so entertaining because I always wonder how much we spend too but never can figure it out because we buy things in bulk and also not consistently eating at home. Hmm I'm curious how your breakfast looks like after you microwave it...do u add water?

    I live in Sydney. If I shop at woolies or Coles for the ONLY, for two people.. it'll be about $250-300 per week including snacks! :( I could definitely cut down

    • @JaniceFung
      @JaniceFung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didnt have any steak this week or salmon, but on weeks when I get those, my grocery costs are definitely higher haha
      what snacks do you usually get??

    • @joannedong
      @joannedong ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JaniceFung yes I got steaks and salmon. I also got quite abit of frozen seafood and nuggets etc.. it costs so much.
      Snacks are usually fruits (grapes, apples and banana), baked harvest peas (they're chips and so good), more chips (doritos or something), ICE CREAM :( and tiny teddies or a variety of snacks. Oh and Asian snacks like seaweed and some Asian drinks. My partner snacks alot and it costs so much. I'm so jealous of your grocery haul. If it was just me, I'd probably buy the same. How much do you usually spend if it's you and your sister?

    Family of 4 (2A 2K, eldest eats like an adult lol) and we're about $170 /wk long term average these days. This includes everyone's breakfast 7 days a week, all lunches bar say 3 x A lunches and all dinners except 2 x A & 2K dinners out once a fortnight. Includes cleaning products, fruit & veg, snacks etc. I run a tight ship, shop the specials, know the times my local Coles marks down etc..
