  • Controversial Crumble here! He rides the KTM 1090 Adventure R for half an hour, slags it off and then takes it back. The Africa Twin rules OK!!!!

I own that exact bike and I love it!! I had been riding Honda’s since 83’ and I’m here to tell u, the ktm is a much more refined machine. I looked at Honda, triumph, and bmw and none of them come close to the ktm.
In my opinion, adventure riding is about being able to go off road and the 1090 r is the only machine that can affectively do that with the off road suspension and knobbies.
I test rode all the competition and they don’t hold a candle in the performance department. The ktm flat out rips!! I can keep up with the 200 lb bikes in the woods and say bye bye on the street and then ride to dinner. There’s no other bike that does that.
Vibey ... I don’t think so. You need to ride it again.

  • @mojoriden
    @mojoriden 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Grabbed me from the first ride Going on year 3. I haven't ridden the AT but it sounds like its quite a lot different. The strange thing about the 1x90 R is that the seat feels tall until you stand and ride hard off road. Once you sit back down you realize how 'in' the bike you actually are. The spread required to straddle the tank while standing is a factor, especially if you have a tank bag but its all something the melts away as you ride. Fantastic off road and on. The power, especially the 1190 is simply addicting. She can cover big miles in a hurry. Nice review.

Crumble just jeep the AT, rev it a bit more, get the suspension set for your weight, try a stunt 1 finger pull clutch lever, maybe get it tuned up then just take out the blackbird when you have power cravings that's the beauty of having two bikes.

I had a AT and it was a nice looking bike but not a patch on what KTM make. Yes the AT would make a good touring bike but for real off road it's KTM every time. When did Honda last win the Dakar......
Yes I know these are not Dakar bikes but KTM use all there years of off road experience and implement them into there adventure bikes.
I currently own a Super Duke R and if I had to swap back to an adventure bike I'd have a hard decision over the 1290 Adventure and the AT Sport.
Some guys are slating the KTM for reliability but the v twin in the KTM has been around for years,it's a solid unit, but all these electronics that all bikes have now are something we should all be concerned about in the long term!

@@TheCrumble Had the 990 - got an ATAS now. Does that tell you something?. Yes the 990 is fun and its a good bike but its tiring to ride - no low down torque like the AT due to lean fueling issues (emissions regs) and a throttle thats so twitchy its just tiresome at low speeds. Yes the AT isn't as powerful but its fun to ride and makes you want to keep riding, without just looking for the next overtake or long stretch so you can open it up. Another plus is the AT is more "keeping your licence " friendly!

I have been riding KTM's for the last 10 years. I understand your comments. You pick the bike that works for you. I do quite a bit of gravel roads not necessarily off-road and then the KTM suspension come alive. That is one place I think Honda cut a few corners on the Africa Twin. That is the main reason I passed on the Africa Twin. The suspension does need to sorting out if you use it off-pavement.

  • @glasshopper2010

KTM is a good bike but like you I was pleased to get back on my AT after riding my Bro's 1090. I owned a 950 Adventure and it spent many hours in the workshops of your test ridefriends Redline! I think the journos think they get some sort of macho street cred for praising KTM.
Personally I think the most difficult thing about 'adventure bike' ownership is the tyres. More power for the road might be fun but you would really need road oriented tyres to get the most out of it.
    Another good video. Thanks

Just know that adding horses to the AT is a real pain in the butt. It's all based on what you want out of your bike, do you want your bike built for commuting and long distance riding or to you want a bike built to be an absolute weapon in the Baja 1000. I'd say this, if your view of fun is getting out and just riding then go with the AT. If you enjoy pushing your limits of control over a monster with 125hp at the flick of the wrist then go with the KTM.

They're both great bikes...and it makes complete sense that you prefer the AT. The 1090 is a total dirtbike in comparison and feels like it. The advantages are how good it works off road, which includes the "on the bike, not in it" thing (as well as the front heavy aggressive standing position) and how well it copes with being dropped. The AT absolutely hates being dropped in comparison - the KTM side panel is pennies, same crash on the AT is a dented metal tank and expensive cracked painted plastics. Coming off a road bike, the AT will feel far more familiar and comfortable. Coming off dirt bikes, the 1090 will feel WAY more familiar and confidence inspiring, especially off road. Good review, bring your AT up to Wales for a trail ride sometime! :)

Did exactly the same test rides a couple of months ago to choose which one of the two. Came to same conclusion for very similar reasons. Walked back into the Honda dealer and bought the AT. Commuted 2000 Miles plus some green laning since. It was the right decision.! AT is the dogs plumbs! Fitted the Honda quick shifter which adds some fizz when you ride it hard. Thanks for clarifying the KTM dislikes :) I recently got a 1090 (not R), and to be honest, it takes some getting used to. Wind protection is crap, the indicator switch is not where it should be, and there are a few other niggles. However, the engine being vibey is not something I recognize. In fact, it is very smooth for a big twin imho! I am pretty sure the tires on the R didn't do it justice. Still, in the end, it all comes down to personal taste. Got 3,300 miles on 2016 1290 GT. Costly to buy new but haven't regretted it one bit. I found it easy to ride from day one (unlike a BMW Adventure 1200 I tested) and for a largish bike it handles like a dream. Like the cycle press says, it has what must honestly be one of the nicest motors on 2 wheels. The power is always there when you need it and you can get LOTS more by down-shifting a cog.) The one problem most owners have is using 6th gear, the bike just doesn't like it until travelling 85-90. Yes, it would be nice to have a handsome TFT dash a la Ducati, but what's there is adequate. I did discover (to my horror) that it's svelte 505lb weight was too heavy for me to pick up solo when I dropped it in a parking lot once - but assistance wasn't far away. Blame that on it's high CG and my 67 years of age. Not a thing has yet to break, fail or give way. Still on the original tires and brake pads (and I do ride agressively.) Did you service your KTM on schedule? Or perhaps you purchased it used from someone who didn't service it, or you may just be unlucky and got a lemon. In any case, it's a shame to paint all KTMs with the same unfortunate brush you sadly had to experience as many KTM owners are extremely happy with their purchases.

The KTM is designed mostly offroad that's why it has the engine configuration that it does. The Honda is a fantastic fire road and road bike. The ktm feels top heavy at first but it's designed for experienced off road riders, the more confident you are on it the more you relise the design is excellent. The AT is the other way round great to start with but you find its limits quickly if you like to ride hard trails off road. But if you ride on the road and light trails then the AT is great

These are two completely different ADV bikes for two completely different riders. African riders are calmer, the oranges are addicted to the throttle. that's easy to notice anywhere in the world. Of course it comes at the expense of convenience but this KTM 1090 tarmac and off-road performance provides a much higher results. best value for money from all used ADV bikes (with real off road capabilities) IMHO. I loved everything about this bike....-beside the windscreen.

The 1090R is superior if you ride offroad. The AT can't touch it once the pavement ends. As soon as you get on some serious single track, that dirt bike feel of the KTM chassis and suspension will take you places you would not dare to go on the AT.

Magura does a hydraulic clutch kit for the AT. But quite expensive. Meanwhile, may I advise you (and everyone else) to not lube modern teflon lined cables. Sure, it feels better short-term but it wrecks the cable longterm. Yes, even if you use PTFE spray.
Just try to keep them dry and clean and make sure it is routed properly. Makes a huge difference.
Otherwise, buy a new cable (aftermarket is hit and miss, I'd suggest OEM).

I have to say mate I've test ridden a few KTM's and I know they have good components as a whole, but they never feel right, I do think it's hype over substance. As daft as this sounds the only bike I can compare the AT to is the GS as it feels like you're sat in it, and the standing position is also good, obviously the power is far better too, it's just the dam cost of the things. As you know the AT just feels perfect and only needs a 120bhp switch for road use :)

My review was the opposite I seen the potential of the ktm over the At , the v twin is a different beast it’s best to stretch the gears and she will be smooth and it would be a bit more viby with the tck 80 on and as for the last comment I had issues with my Honda I bought same as you it was in dealers a few times for warranty repairs inc crap wheels and switch gear , I loved the look of my At and ye engine was very smooth but you really did have to think about overtaking , I think Honda for all the hype should have spent more time on build quality when they brought them out ,I just might have kept it more than 9 months , but no regrets on my 1090 R

I've had a couple of the NC's and they perform like 125's, rode with a guy with an AT and until around 70mph, my DR350 was pacing it - and more exciting while doing it.
They need to raise the rev limiter / red line, it's a bloody joke, it's more like a car than a bike.
I love the looks of the AT, and really want to love the bike, but too much weight and lack of excitement stop me loving it..

I recently tested both the AT and the 1090 off road. You can definitely ride the 1090 like a big dirt bike. Even get it airborne. The suspension is superb. However the AT still seemed very manageable but with a slight lack of compliance. The AT also sounded better than the Yoshimura that was on the 1090. It’s also a way sexier bike. My club is full of riders that ride big bikes like little bikes. Our President rides am AT in little bike sanctioned events. It’s not the bike, it’s the rider!

Your AT will always be way smoother, way softer, way easier to ride than the KTM, but that's not what the KTM is about. KTM is about performance, (ready to race) and you've got to sacrifice quite a bit for that. The 1290 SAS is not much less vibey than the 1190 and I'd guess 1090 too, and the 1290 won't be as smooth as the AT. My mate has an AT and I enjoy riding it everytime I get too, but I wouldn't have one, I love my KTM's. Each to their own 👍 I think no less of you for crapping out on KTM 😂

I think the KTM is better for the more experienced rider and the AT is nice and soft for those rather new to the off-road thing. My test was pretty crap to be fair - I would like a day with that bike to have a proper play.

Not everyone can afford a new bike ,in the real world we're looking at bikes a few years old, how have they fared? well in ktms case not well, all i hear about is mechanicals, overpriced repairs and awful ignorance from ktm .I also recently test rode one and can't say i was at all impressed, why should you need to spend thousands on upgrades when these expensive machines are meant to be "ready to race"
