Custom A-Pillar Speakers - Stretching Grill Cloth & Modifying the Panel

  • When we are building custom a pillar speakers we need to apply a stretchy material to our skeleton and speaker ring. This material gives us a surface to apply fiberglass resin and eventually add body filler and make nice and smooth. Adding speakers to the a pillar location leads to better sound and acoustics.

    Hey Mark; I’ve been watching and learning from your videos for close to a year now. I think they are all great videos; I’ve been installing since 2001... some of the material are great reminders and others are brand new skills, techniques and processes that I’m extremely thankful for you sharing here. I’m about to get on my laptop and come up with a design for my brand new (used by myself for maybe 12 hours total playtime) MB QUART PWD 304 subs that I’ve been holding on to for way too long... time to put them to some great usefulness. I’m excited to get started and use some of the techniques I’ve learned from you and wanted to give you a shout out of appreciation. As long as you’re still making videos I’ll be sure to keep watching. Thanks again bro!

    • @ryanmalinovsky6504
      @ryanmalinovsky6504 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Green what kind of ride do you have? Do you have install experience? I’ve been installing for a while and can say starting and finishing an installation on your own is very rewarding, especially when it’s your own concept. Absolutely use what you’ve learned here and apply all of it to your install. You will have a positive sense of pride as an outcome and more likely than not; you will come up with new ideas as you are working on your stereo.

    but can you clarify the tweeter alignment method and how should I choose the where to point it .

    • @ryanmalinovsky6504
      @ryanmalinovsky6504 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahmed Salam get a cheep laser pointer and put in location of where the tweeter is going to be in the vehicle (A pillar e.g) aim it at the listening position of where your ears are while sitting in drivers seat. Customize your tweeter pod based on how the tweeter is located while the laser is pointed at the driver side headrest. Rinse and repeat for the passenger side tweeter, remember to aim the laser at your listening position, not that of the front seat passenger. You can take care of a 2nd EQ by using time alignment in your stereo or with a DSP for when you do have a passenger or multiple
      passengers.

  • @xaytana
    @xaytana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I just had a thought. Since 3d printing is fairly common now, and 3d scanning is also becoming more common; why not scan the interior of a vehicle, import it into a cad program, find the focal point of where the lasers would be, create a flat surface for the speaker to mount to, extrude that surface into the 3d scan of the pillars, do some shaping for the end product, and make a cavity of where the pillars are, then print the speaker mounts. It'd fit the pillars well enough, if not perfectly, and it'd have the speakers would have correct aiming, and you'd have the finish shape without a ton of fiberglass work. You could probably even make it hollow with some support material, and use expanding foam later if needed.
    Even if you don't print the end product, using a scan and cad would give you the proper angles and lengths for those dowels or whatever supports you want to use.

    • @jofredduplesis3458
      @jofredduplesis3458 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xander Zoolander high frequensies is directional unlike bass, therefore it needs to be pointed at your ears, otherwise the stereo image suffer, unless you are tall and sit in the middle.

    • @xaytana
      @xaytana 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Read the comment again, maybe read the whole comment if you didn't the first time. I said the speakers would have the correct aiming, and I never implied the aiming wasn't for the driver only.

    Question on aiming, why did you chose a focal point by the overhead interior light as opposed to asymmetrically aimed on axis towards the driver? Is it because these drivers exhibit a good off axis response or are you trying to present a two seat front stage?

It's fool proof 😂.

      That's a real can of worms to open up. I like #1 BUT:
      What sounds best is different per vehicle, and what is acceptable to the owner. Some vehicles have crap space for kicks, some have A pillars too close for comfort, and some have obstacles/reflections that color the sound.
      You can try diymobileaudio DOT com/forum/ Can be really helpful for vehicle specific answers.

    I know the in a car you're aiming for "front stage" when it comes to SQ. The one car I built for myself in my teens actually aimed the pillar speakers at the windshield. They were more horns actually but it was a nice warm sound that allowed me to achieve higher clarity at over 120DB. have you experimented with aiming speakers inside the cabin? I got a lot of compliments for how that car not only sounded clean but clean from very far away.

      Bigchuck678 they probably won’t be exactly symmetrical if passenger side tweeter is aimed differently then driver side tweeter. Either way the subtle differences are not going to be noticeable since it’s fiberglassed in giving it an OEM look

    Is it safe to do this if I have airbags in my A pillars?

      Airbags deploy with an amazing amount of force, I would not recommend modifying or installing anything near airbags. The problem is, anything mounted there with the airbag can become a "missile" and cause serious injury or death
