So after watching your video I decided to check my skids and they both needed adjustment, i used you two pencil method and it worked great, getting ready for a big storm coming tonight in the NE the adjustments came just in time. I do find your enthusiasm about taking care of your machines contagious i have three machines to take care of and your tips help a lot. Keep the videos coming!!

I use Armor skids as well. Another plus is they are twice as heavy as the ones that came with the blower. The added weight, helps keep the thrower down

Gravel driveway, no way fluidfilm (while good stuff) or even PAINT is going to remain entirely intact and protective. So every summer when it’s dry, I take the snowblower out, clean off any dirt/dust/sand and such, and then spray rustoleum rusty metal primer over all the bare metal areas, including pretty much fogging the auger and impeller area. Not pretty or new looking but it has lasted many years and is still going.
It’s great that you take this level of care with your machine jertres! Definitely getting your money’s worth out of it for sure!
I started using fluid film once I came across your channel and haven’t looked back. I’ve always been a believer of treating my equipment the best I can and in turn it’s never let me down when I need it.
Also suggesting a generator service video if possible.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us diy’rs. I’ve been using cheap furniture polish that I get at the dollar store to coat my bucket and impellers. I never heard of Fluid Film and Armor skids, thanks for the heads-up.

Those are some really good tips JB that many would never think about. Those Armor skids are definitely going on my sons Ariens snowblower, maybe on my JD. Nice video but you did not install your scraper blade correctly.
In the owners manual it says to drop the scraper blade down fully before tightening, that's the reason for the elongated holes on the bucket itself.
And also by dropping blade down fully it will also help machine stay down better in heavy wet packed snow a little better.
Then after scraper blade down fully and tightened then you adjust your skid shoes.
Also I notice that front metal cap on the gear case tends to want to rust, I cleaned mine up and put a thin layer of grease on it about 3 years ago and no rust since.....

I've got a Powersmart 2 stage, only 1.5 years old and I've had to brace the front shoes the auger housing kept getting bent in badly. Not to mention, the scrapper bar has a big bend and rust already. Considering your blower is 10 years old and Is looking like it's show room floor ready, powersmart is a joke. Great video knocked it outta the park!
Hey fury! The metal on those PowerSmart models is thinner! A direct hit from a curb will bend them up a bit. Sounds like you’ve taken some measures already to strengthen the frame. Keep it oiled up and you’ll keep that metal in great shape! Thanks for watching!

I would also add that you should equalize the tire pressure on both tires prior to setting the height of the bucket because that's going to change things too just mentioning one more thing but I really like what you did with the fluid film

As much as these machines cost today, you’d be a fool not to do every bit of maintenance you can think of.
I actually enjoy getting out into the shop and preforming these maintenance steps. It’s just very satisfying to have that peace of mind that your machines are in top condition.

Per Project Farm Channel tests... Fluid Film is the best at preventing rust. BUT if you had a lot of rust on your bucket like the pic you briefly showed you probably should brush off the loose rust with a wire brush and spray with "Rust Kutter", which convert's the rust (again best per Project Farm channel)... and then maybe give it a coat of Rust-oleum rust reformer paint and then cover with fluid film and do it right, lol!

I've been using Fluid Film for 20 years, its a great undercoating for vehicles. But I have to say, my power equipment is the only place I don't use it because it wears away too quick when coming into direct contact with snow and grass (on mowers). For those things I use Amsoil's MPHD.

I use it when the machine is going to be siting unused, like off season. Maybe a few quick sprays during the season in key areas between storms.
Love your videos! Recently I actually started wondering about treating some of these possible rust areas then saw this video. Bought my Deluxe 30 back in 2014 and these things have gotten way too expensive to ever have to buy one again. Hashtag Ariens with good maintenance for life!

The heater doesn't work well in an uninsulated garage, its too small and not powerful enough to melt the snow. The Delooant snow blower mat is too thin. The edges of the mat curl up if there is noting on them and the mat moves easily when you are getting the snow blower in position. Buy a large door mat at Lowe's or Home Depot them work better.

I have the poly skids . I assume to remove the skids and do the same operations as you did here to remove the gunk . Bright side of poly skids is they should not rust as metal skids do . Great video here !

@@GarageGear I also coat the snowblower with silicone spray . No snow this season yet to even take my new Ariens 30 inch Platinum SHO out for a spin . I greased the internal , external parts to get ahead of that game . We will see if we get any snow . If not , I completed the spring maintenance .

I do not use WD-40. That does not prevent rust. IUS 3-in-1. Garage door Lube. That events rust. And it's waterproof

I use fluid film on the frames of my car and truck works great. It’s an old product they developed in the 40s for the Navy during the war it’s been around proven can’t beat it.

Do it now James! Temps and humidity won’t affect the fluid film! Seal that baby up!

I tried those skids, but found they didn't perform well with my ariens auto steer. I ended up getting plastic skid, cant recall the brand, but they work great. Now I dont fight the blower with every bump.

You know what Mace, this idea has crossed my mind. I’ll be keeping an eye out for one this summer that’s in decent shape to do videos on! I’ll see if I can find a craftsman or some other brand to work on. I’ll keep you posted if I find something! Already seeing some deals out there.

Hey xso! Back when I bought mine several years ago my model skids didn’t have a name. I would just buy the model that fits correctly with your model snowblower. Make sure to match up the measurements. Thanks for watching
Great video JB! How you liking those $80 skids? I bought set of them from Home Depot back in Dec. but I never put them on. I originally had planned on putting them on my ST928 but it needs work (scraper bar is worn in an arch so needs a new one and I need to figure out why it wore that way (was like that when bought it) Sucks they make no aftermarket scraper bar for the ST928/ST828 only high $ OEM one) so I might put them on my 1974 10000 series instead, (I also just landed a 1978 924000 series with a teardrop bucket for $100 that was in great shape!) I really like it, I love that they finally moved the controls to better locations. Other then it is only the 7hp model and needs the axle swapped out for a differential axle, since it has the solid axle (I can't stand the solid axle on any snowblower) so this summer it will get the axle swapped out, an impeller kit and tall chute too. Idk how much road salt they use where you live JB but here in northern Minnesota they use tons of it! So everything rusts out like crazy here. Is zero chance of breaking those scraper bar bolts loose where I live, even most machines I have worked on here even the skid bolts were frozen and broke off too. I try to replace most all the bolts on machines here with stainless (I just bought stainless short carriage bolts for the scraper bar on my 928 not long ago) so replacing most all the hardware with stainless is food for thought for ya anyway. Also I like to keep my scraper clearance at no more then 1/8 inch, it keeps the driveway a lot cleaner so usually the sun will melt it down bare in a few days. Oh btw we got over a foot of snow with huge drifts over the weekend so finally had a chance to give my 1974 8hp Ariens a real test with her impeller kit, tall chute and her brand new 13x5 X-tracs too. Could not have been more impressed with how it worked. And so loved those X-tracs! Great traction and NO MORE CHAIN BOUNCE. Couldn't be happier with her. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP JB! 👍

Never thought of that. I am sure you are right about the scraper bar JB. The skids were wore way down and the scraper was right on the ground when I bought it. Thanks again JB! And yes I could not be more impressed with the 1974, after you talked me into an impeller kit, tall chute and the X-tracs, she is a total tank!
