JB, my lubrication of the drive axles are going to take some time. Mine are rusted to the axle and I ordered some PB Blaster to try to free them. Here's to PB Blaster......
Great video JB something I need to do to my new one as well. Since getting the new one I have heard a lot of negativity around the auto turn function. When you start taking snow it’s tough to go straight. Wonder if this is something you would want to do a video on or if you have heard/experienced it. Thanks!
@@GarageGear Absolutely no issues going in a straight line for my first run of 20cm wet heavy snow. Ariens has a great vid showing the proper way to level your machine.
how about the half shaft axles, and the "slip" middle part of the axle that the half shafts rotate in? Usually have to try to get spray in there, like WD-40. But I just ended up tearing it down, was doing all other maintenance anyway. I know grease is usually used if taken apart, but seems like anti-seize might be a good option too. Maybe even better than grease? EDIT: Ok, well that "axle slip tube" is different than mine. But still same concept. I'm using anti seize.
@@GarageGear yep, thats what I did yesterday. axles turn independently Very Smoothly now, even by hand. Should steer much better now. Still have to get the rest of the drive gears and mechanism all back together. Then finish repairing the gear box for the chute control. Thanks for All the Great Videos 👍
Good tutorial JB, just when I think you've done every video that has to do with a snowblower. I just did my Craftsman when I was prepping it for the upcoming winter season. except I used low temp white lithium grease. Anti-seize does a great job as well but it is so bad and gets everywhere. I have been hoping and praying we're not going to need a snowblower this winter in WNY but that usually never happens.
Great job! Following your instructions on reassembly you did not mention about the C clip being reinstalled on the right side. Other than that really enjoyed your video!!
I have a question.. I have a new wheeled Honda. The service book says to remove the tires to complete an oil change. The oil drain is behind the tire. How do I go from the service position back to horizontal with no tire on it ? Or can I do the oil change while it's vertical? The manual is a bit vague. It doesn't show any jack points in it and where the snowblower is 250 lbs, I'm a bit worried to just drop it on blocks. maybe I could drop the non wheeled axel on a block ?
I just did this this morning on my new Deluxe 24”. Question I have: when you reassembled everything is there supposed to be like 1/8”-1/4” play side to side with the axles?
@@xrpxtrariceplease2811 hey xrp! Depends on your snowblower! You could try tipping it and if you don’t see any leaks or drips from the oil spout you’re good to go. If you’re concerned about just drain the oil out and put new oil in when you’re done.! Your engine will thank you that way!
I did take never cease and put the axles I have a Toro Max it's about 2 years old, share the pens about a year and a half ago how are they set. Going through surgeries for my knee get done and I don't remember where they would be set cuz when I noticed they were broken the auger stopped by time i seen it not throwing snow if you can help me out I appreciate it thank you for the video
Hey JB! I recently bought a used craftsman snowblower, I believe it’s a 1995 model, with the 5hp tecumseh engine, 5 speed fwd, 2 speed reverse. And the previous owner told me he uses 93 premium gas with stabilizer in it. Should I continue to use it as he has, or flush the system and use ethanol free gas ?
Hey Jonathan I would skip the flush and just start using ethanol free gas. You’ll be good to go with it! 👍 just use up whatever you have left in the tank then start pouring it in!
Did this right before a big snowfall here in Minnesota - great video. When putting it back together I followed your instruction, but did notice some left to right play on each wheel (I think it’s one or the other). I took the pan back off and the right wheel and made the sure teeth were lined up, the bushing was on etc and pushed it as far as it would go. Drove it around and the auto steer and everything works great. So I “think” that’s just fine? I can’t think of a reason it wouldn’t work, I just don’t specifically remember it having that play so was curious if you knew. Thanks again for the videos - I have a whole playlist of your stuff and a checklist for pre and post season. Need to measure and order armorskids next! Ariens Platnium 30” SHO
Hey JB, Great video! I actually just did this today. Regarding the left wheel, there is no E clip on this wheel correct? I thought I was missing it. Also, the two bolts on the top of the belly pan are shorter than the other four.
I used silver grade anti seize because that's what i found at the store. I wonder if anyone could elaborate on whether it's better to use silver, copper, or standard (aluminum) for this specific application.
Yeah, it's absurd that Ariens doesn't grease up the axle shafts during assembly. I recently picked up a nearly new deluxe 28 for a great price. Didn't run because somebody left ethanol gas to rot in the carburetor. I had to squirt penetrating oil into the axle keyway for a couple days and then blast the end of the axle shaft with an air hammer to get the wheels off.
I just did the anti seize on the axle and put it back together. What I noticed however is that sitting still, the snowblower walks back very slowly now when I don't think it did before (maybe I didn't notice). I followed your instructions in the video. Any idea on why its happening? It's from the motor vibrating and making it go backwards. Also, is it normal for there to be a slight gap between the tire and the side of the machine on each side that allows a little play between the tires when pushing them back and forth? I noticed theres like a 1/8 inch gap between the tire and the inside of the machine.
Hey spectre as far as the machine moving a little goes I have seen this before. Just make sure your drive plate isn’t touching the friction disc while in idle mode. If it is some adjustments will need to be made. Other than that it made just be the engine vibration causing the machine to move a little. Put a block of wood by a tire to keep it in place. The wheel gap you mentioned is also normal.👍
@@GarageGear Thanks for the tip, so it doesn't matter if melting snow gets on the 1/8 inch spot between the wheel and the snowblower body? It's exposed there when it slides back and forth. One other thing is that I put some anti-seize on the teeth for the part that slides back in for the auto turn. Is this a big deal? I ran the snowblower today for a little snow we got and it didn't seem to cause an issue but you didn't put any on in the video.
@@spectre3492 hey spectre you could coat that gap with fluid film or some more anti seize. Either will do if you’re concerned about that space. A coating once a year should do!
Hey my friend! That’s a great question that I don’t have a perfect answer to but I can tell you this. I have used this same container for years and one application I did years ago held up fine. I took the wheels off three years later and it still looked good! 👍
@@GarageGearFrankly, I use the nickle version when changing my auto tires because that was all that was available on the store self when I bought the stuff. But my understanding is that the nickel anti seize is for nut and bolt threads and I should be using the copper based anti seize on car wheels and axle plates. However, I don't think it matters much in the snowblower application, although my car dealer used the copper version on the wheels and the bolts when I couldn't get my licence plate off. Cheers - enjoy your content.
only bad thing about anti-seize... Its almost as bad as glitter. You open it, and the next thing you know, somehow its everywhere. And its often hard to remove from many surfaces, especially if you can't use a solvent on it. And clothes, well thats just part of your outfit now.
Hey JB!! Hope All Is Well turns out it was my carb. Poor design but i use it 3x every snowfall because i take care of the snrs and my parents. So for bein 9 years old and following your vids its doing Very Well. *gas in oil means carb - that a universally right statement? Thanks JB!!
@@Parabola_PJ hey Pete! Hmmm is your snowblower blowing a lot of smoke? If there is gas in your oil you may have a piston ring or other engine related issue. If there is oil in the carb somehow the oil is making its way up. Let me know.👍
@@GarageGear lol now its on the floor because it slipped out of my hand. Gonna have to call in the hazmat team to clean up that slip hazard on the floor before work safe sees it. My name is actually not Don , I have a Donzi boat.
@@GarageGear Mike, I’m in Western Canada. That Ariens is the off spring of my 832 John Deere snow blower they look so similar. Its a late 70s upgraded to a 11hp Honda engine. Great videos you post, for me its all common sense but I enjoy them all the same, its great you teach others smart and practical ideas.
Here I see anti-seize only, another video online posted almost same time as this one has both anti-seize *_and_* grease. Others again say just use grease. Personally I am familiar with anti-seize and have only used it so far for threads so nuts and bolts don't seize up. As we're now talking about an axle on a snowblower, I just don't really see the purpose of using anti-seize when the goal is just to prevent rust. Grease does that too and it will also lube that shaft and axle. Grease is the common thing to use with axles, so why the out of norm solution?
This is what I was taught long ago and has worked well for me in my experience. You could use grease if you want to. Just found no issues using antiseize👍
@@GarageGear I ended up using both anti-seize and grease(did it yesterday) and I'm glad I did it as axles don't freeze up now(-18C) like it did before, and minor corrosion had started to develop after I've only used this blower one time. Went over all nuts and bolts etc in the same go with rustproofing, as it seemed smart to do all in one go. Kind of sad basic stuff like this are left out by the manufacturer, and I'm sure there's lots of people ending up with seized axles and what ever else just because it's just bare metal. Anyhow, now I've learned something so it's not all bad.
If you don't do this the job varies from hard to impossible getting a wheel or hub off. Even a well-exercised mechanics vocabulary is useless. Make this the first thing you do on a new purchase.
sorry guys you don't need to have that much anti seize worked with that stuff for a long time in a manufacturing plant .do you guys (youtubers) have any shares in permatex lol

Great video JB something I need to do to my new one as well. Since getting the new one I have heard a lot of negativity around the auto turn function. When you start taking snow it’s tough to go straight. Wonder if this is something you would want to do a video on or if you have heard/experienced it.
Thanks!
Hey Nick! I’ll be keeping an eye on this once we get some snow here! Got nothing worth pulling out a snowblower for yet.

Absolutely no issues going in a straight line for my first run of 20cm wet heavy snow. Ariens has a great vid showing the proper way to level your machine.
Great tip! Could you make a video showing this on an Ariens Rapidtrak snowblower?
Thanks for watching shiznitz! Sure… just need $4000….🤔 lol
Do you have any knowledge of the Rapidtrack if its the same way to take off & grease the axles, or is there a different process?

how about the half shaft axles, and the "slip" middle part of the axle that the half shafts rotate in? Usually have to try to get spray in there, like WD-40. But I just ended up tearing it down, was doing all other maintenance anyway. I know grease is usually used if taken apart, but seems like anti-seize might be a good option too. Maybe even better than grease?
EDIT: Ok, well that "axle slip tube" is different than mine. But still same concept. I'm using anti seize.

Hey Chris not to worry we’ll be getting snow soon enough! Smart man greasing those up!

Yeah, Maybe you could do that or you could also Jack it up a bit. Thanks for watching.

And the previous owner told me he uses 93 premium gas with stabilizer in it. Should I continue to use it as he has, or flush the system and use ethanol free gas ?

Hey JB,
Great video! I actually just did this today. Regarding the left wheel, there is no E clip on this wheel correct? I thought I was missing it.
Also, the two bolts on the top of the belly pan are shorter than the other four.
Hey Paul! The left side is a single shaft only. Nothing to worry about on that one!
I used silver grade anti seize because that's what i found at the store. I wonder if anyone could elaborate on whether it's better to use silver, copper, or standard (aluminum) for this specific application.
@@Monke-ys6gz the aluminum one I use gives me no issues 👍
Yeah, it's absurd that Ariens doesn't grease up the axle shafts during assembly. I recently picked up a nearly new deluxe 28 for a great price. Didn't run because somebody left ethanol gas to rot in the carburetor. I had to squirt penetrating oil into the axle keyway for a couple days and then blast the end of the axle shaft with an air hammer to get the wheels off.
@@danielleroberts8964 yep that sounds like a royal pain! They should definitely live them up at the factory
That is the key that you call key way. It fits into the key way.
Thanks for sharing
Hey JB, What type of grease do you use on the drive sprocket?
I’ve used red and tacky grease or marine grease on those with success! 👍👍
Noticed that you are using anti-seize that has a high nickle content. Is this preferred over the high copper mixture?
@@desandrade7927 thanks for sharing my friend! Appreciate you! 👍
only bad thing about anti-seize... Its almost as bad as glitter. You open it, and the next thing you know, somehow its everywhere. And its often hard to remove from many surfaces, especially if you can't use a solvent on it. And clothes, well thats just part of your outfit now.

Having little faith we will get snow in the NorthEast. Haven’t had a storm since 2015

Second winter seems to be no accumulation same as last year. Our average yearly snowfall is 10 feet..!

Where's the snow? I already did all the stuff you show on your videos. So far 5.8" here in Erie Pa.. Somethings not right.
All we got are dustings by me! Two inches the one day. All melted the next. Too warm still. South of me got it pretty good. Don’t worry it’s coming!
If you don't do this the job varies from hard to impossible getting a wheel or hub off. Even a well-exercised mechanics vocabulary is useless. Make this the first thing you do on a new purchase.
Absolutely! Couldn’t agree more!
