      I have gas coming out of breather tube which exits crankcase. Checked oil level, it is EMPTY.
      Question is, should I drain the gas, fill the oil to capacity (32oz) then add gas to see what happens.

    71 Ariens, 51 years old and still running. Oil change and maintenance is the key. Not like the disposable products today. Ethanol free is used in all my equipment, and like you said, starts right up. A little pricey but as a fellow upstate New Yorker, it's a life saver in my generator.

    Very well covered video JB only two things i suggest: 1. Check oil before running the engine you should see all the equipment we get in with engine damage or seized due to low or no oil 2. Check the electric starter to see if the mounting bolts are loose and use your electric starter regularly to keep it from rusting up on the threaded shaft we always lubricate this point annually. Grease is the most important thing we use a 00 grease in the gearbox and low temperature grease on the hex shaft and gear drives, spray lithium on chain drives. Well done sir!

    Great list, and efficient presentation. Thanks for sharing this video. I was checking my Craftsman 1350 series blower for loose bolts on the handles and frame. It seemed "squidgy", but all the bolts were tight. That's when I discovered the crack in the auger housing, where you split the case to change belts. I am so glad I found this now, and not during the first blizzard. It was a decent day, so I just rolled my 110v flux core welder outside, fixed the crack, and bolted everything back together. Now I wait for Old Man Winter to show up!

    So stoked to make the "tribe" list in this video! As an East Coaster (Newfoundlander) that sees plenty of wet nasty snow, I can attest that all these pre-season maintenance checks are critical! We don't have E free gas here, and I know you have said you don't invest much in the gas stabilizer method. But, I can tell you from experience, Sta-bil is a solid product and will help with easy startup every season! We deal with a lot of temp fluctuations throughout the year. This Jan. alone we have had everything from +12c to -15c. With those fluctuations you never know when you might need a piece of equipment, so I keep it all ready to go! Nothing gets officially winterized. So I love stabil to keep my fuel toped up and ready to go at all times, in my bikes, snowblowers, and all my gas powered equipment! Thanks for all the tips and tricks man, love the channel!

    Noob question. 3:38 Why are you greasing the shaft to the left of the friction disc? It doesn't look like it contacts anything.
    Really enjoying your videos! I got rid of a 2-stroke snowblower that clogged up with any wet/heavy snow. Just bought a new Ariens and I'm learning so much! I enjoy your videos, and I have learned a lot about snowblowers that I should’ve known. I have a question about when removing the belly pan and tipping the snowblower on its auger. Did you drain the oil and the fuel out of the machine first or did you leave the gas and oil in the machine?

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Jeff when tipping these oil should be fine. Depending on where your gas spout is you’ll want to probably only have less than half a tank of gas inside before you tip it or some will leak out. 👍

    Great vid, JB.
    Unfortunately, I'd have to travel over 3 hours to buy ethanol-free gas.
    Long Island (all of it) is considered the "Greater New York (City) Area" and well, you know how that goes.......
    So I have developed a system to deal with the ridiculous corn gas.
    I'll buy 93 octane and treat it with a mixture of Sea-Foam and Stabil 360. The treated fuel will last a month easy, but after that, the treated fuel gets drained from the machine and dumped into my truck. And it's back to the gas station for some fresh gas.
    It's a pain in the ass, but it's better than dealing with carb problems.
    After the season, the blower gets drained and filled with engineered fuel (TrueFuel) and I let it run on that for 5-10 minutes. It can then go to sleep for the summer.
    Anyone can overcome the ethanol problem, it's just a little more work....

    Question for you please. I don’t have fluid film but I have Blaster surface shield, not sure if it was a good idea or not but any exposed bolt, nut, screw I hit with some of the surface shield. Even the nuts that hold the wheels on I hit them with and then sprayed on the painted wheels. Does it make a difference if spray it on then wipe it around or just spray it on and just leave it? It’s not globbed on there or anything like that. I just did it like you do with wd-40 in the auger bucket, just spray it all around and just leave it.
    Would wd-40 be better than the surface shield on the painted surfaces or is neither needed since they are painted?

    Hey JB. Doing my pre-season on my Ariens 8526. Sticker say model 932105.
    I had a shear pin break last year. Bought new ariens pins not aftermarket. The pin is the model # listed in the manual but will not fit because just past the threads, there's a tiny "flare" that steps up to the shaft size. Virtually every shear pin has this. The shear pin in my blower now does not have this "flare" and it will fit in either hole so there's not an obstruction or something. I'm really at a loss for what to do.

      Hey Tom! Great question! Tilting the snowblower up like that is actually called the service position. Most snowblowers should not have an issue with leaks. Only seen one snowblower slowly drip oil from its spout when tipped up like that. If your concerned about it leaking. Drain the oil out and make sure there is little to no gas in the tank then tip it up. Should definitely not have an issue then. Thanks for watching!

      Hey Karen! I believe what needs to be done is the following.
      Flush out the gas tank with regular gas to get all gas/oil mix out.
      Then take the carb off and give it a quick cleaning with carb cleaner.
      My guess is this should take care of it but I’ve never seen this before.
      Hopefully this is all that is needed and there is no permanent damage done to the engine itself. My guess is if you did this and got it running it would smoke for a little bit as it burns off the oil.

      Mine will puke out part of what's in the float bowl out of the overflow, so I usually shut the fuel off and run the engine until it dies before tipping it up. If you still lose fuel when you tip it up, it's worth looking at the bowl seal (there's still a little fuel left in the bowl after running it out) and at your fuel shutoff.

    Hi, Just found your channel and watched the auger grease video. Nice. Could use some tips/advice. I have a 20+ yr old Craftsman 29", 2 stage, 9hp. Chassis Mod# (536.887990) I take very good care of it but the controls are troublesome. The cable ends at the handles/controls fail almost every year. Do you have any good fixes or upgrades? TY!

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  ปีที่แล้ว

      I Cochran! Here’s an idea! Why if you cut the cables short and somehow link some steel cable (1/4 inch thick) that you could get at Home Depot and link that to your cable and handle! It would be more durable! Perhaps hold up better. Did something similar on a mower and it lasted 17 years lol! Let me know if this could work in your situation.

      Hey Alan, I have taken a torch to them before. Heated them up and immediately after poured ice cold water on them to break them free. This has worked for me 2-3 times.
