I alternate glycolic acid lotion and adapalene on my upper arms for KP, and it works great. I also use an AHA or PHA product on my face and neck about twice per week (on an off-night from retinoids) to prevent ingrown hairs from shaving. They really do have some unique benefits!

AHAs have been my skin saviour since starting Differin to combat acne (which is prescription through a derm in Australia and is $80 AUD here 😪😭), I use the Pyunkang Yul Peeling Gel every 1-2 weeks and it is AMAZING, the weeks I don’t use it I use a gentler AHA toner, like the Krave Kale-lalu-yAHA. Without AHAs the dry, flaky skin from using adapalene is almost unmanageable no matter how much moisture I incorporate in my routine.
But because my skin is sensitive and dry the most I can tolerate any AHA is twice a week.
Hope this helps anyone reading the comments 😅

Can you make a video on all the little “critters” that grow (sometimes thrive!🙃) on the skin? For example, I get confused between malesezia yeast, demodex mites, staph aurelias, etc. how can we figure out if we’re overburdened with this, ask our derm to test for it, and how it shows up as overgrowth on the skin? Can you have overgrowth of all? What’s the best one to target first?

Amlactin is awesome. I hated the smell at first too, but then I read the bottle (🤦‍♀️🤣) and it says it must be shaken up before use. Now I shake it up well and the smell is greatly reduced. I use it on my neck and body. Love it. Also sometimes I will spot treat with a teensy amount on a qtip dabbed directly on my milia as needed. Helps the milia exfoliate away quicker.
Thanks Dr Dray for the information as always 😊

I love glycolic acid. It’s the first real skincare treatment I used and it transformed my skin on my face. I started with Serious Skincare Glycolic Cleanser. Amazing results!
Now I use their peel, serum and moisturizer as needed. I like to alternate between glycolic acid and retinol at night.
I didn’t know there were products for the body. I’ll be getting those too.

  • @megaliberty

Glycolic acid is my favorite active. It produces faster results than retinoids. I always look for products that give me an acid tingle. I love the Alpha Skin Care serum, although I have graduated to Organys 20% glycolic acid serum (more of a toner, though) several times a week.
I may try retinol again, but I have had products before that either disappointed me or made me raw (Differin). Right now I am using ascorbic and glycolic acids in my skincare to excellent results, but I think I can get away with trying retinol again. I'll just use vitamin c in the morning, and retinol or glycolic acid at night.
Thanks to all that free time I had from the covid lock down, and Dr. Dray, I now consider myself an armchair dermatologist.

I like using the Alpha Enhanced Renewal Cream 12% Glycolic Acid. On alternate nights, I also use Tretinoin for a few nights, then the L’Oreal Vitamin C on another night or two. Between these three, my skin always looks very even and clear. Occasionally, I will just use a nighttime moisturizer before bed. Hey Dr Dray, I have a question. Why do AHAs make the skin sensitive to the sun if they also improve the thickness of the skin? I know they exfoliate the top layer of the skin but this is still conflicting for me. Is this sun sensitivity only a temporal after-application effect but in the long term they help protect from the sun?

    • @athens31415

Hi Dr. Thanks for this video. I’m in my mid 30s and starting to get into AHAs. Is it okay to use an AHA and vitamin C at the same time?

Hi Paula, I just watched this video for the second time, so much wonderful information to take in. I am checking my products to see whether I already have anything in my (over-stocked bathroom cupboards) containing glycolic, mandelic or lactic acid, before I buy anything else for my face. Dr Dray said that she doesn't use AHAs on her face (apart from when she tries out products), so maybe I won't make it a priority. Although Dr Dray is still very young in comparison!
I may see whether my regular pharmacy has any AHA samples first. Love to you and your family.

Thanks for this video Dr. Dray ☺️
On this topic, what do you think will give better results overall: use a weak AHA formula daily or a stronger formula weekly?
Also, which AHA has better outcome on what regards collagen production: glycolic or lactic?
    Many thanks! 🙂

    • @megaliberty
      @megaliberty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Glycolic acid has a smaller molecule size than lactic acid, meaning it will go deeper in the skin and will be more likely to enhance collagen production. Just make sure that your glycolic acid product is acidic enough to drive the product deep into your skin. I always look for a product that has a noticeable acid tingle. A good strong product that I use is Organys 20% peel serum, from Amazon. I use it several times a week as a leave on toner. If that is too stong for you the Alpha Skin Care serum that Dr. Dray recommends is a great alternative that I have tried.

These are really great questions, and I have had the same questions in mind.
But from what I have researched, it appears that Glycolic Acid in concentrations at or above 10% help produce collagen....but it has to be 10% or higher.

Yes as db said, also Dr Dray discusses the skin benefits of homone replacement therapy for women. In addition to wearing sunscreen, I also keep a lightweight scarf in my car. I remember being so glad I had it when I was stuck in traffic once for over an hour. I also have an SPF lipbalm stick in my handbag that I apply to my face hands and neck etc. as a mess free way of reapplying when I'm driving home from work.

I know this is a bit off topic from the video, but I’ve seen beauty bloggers starting to talk about using tallow-based products in skincare. Could you do a video/find research to support tallow use? I took a look through a couple of different journals via my university but couldn’t find anything substantive. I thought you might know more where to look/have access to different journals. Thanks!!
