    Oh, this will be good. My layering technique is not to use more than one active at a time and to apply those actives on different days and over moisturizer because my skin is sensitive. When things are really sensitive, I just use a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
    Edit: You're totally right. Specific questions should be directed to the prescribing doctor.

      Same! The more actives you layer on your face at one time, the more likelihood of your skin having a bad reaction. I also like doing one active at a time since you can truly see if that active is making a difference or not. If you put 12 different products on your face and it causes your skin to look good or bad, you have no idea which ingredient caused that to happen.

    • @lyrapeach1827
      @lyrapeach1827 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So if you have a Peptide serum or any other type of serum with an active ingredient do you put it last? After you have moisturized?

    • @Roll587
      @Roll587 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lyra Peach I’ve never used peptides, but I don’t think I’d consider them “active” in the same way I do retinoids or acids. I think a peptide serum could be used before moisturizer, but I always use my retinoids & acids when my face is cleansed, moisturized, and dry.

    • @cecebristan7175
      @cecebristan7175 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lyra Peach i feel like we also need to take things into consideration. Peptides and acids won't go together, they nust cancel each other out, So I wouldn't use peptides after aha or bha. If you wish to use the peptide serum, maybe use it alone and moisturizer. Or maybe do more research with what it goes with. Good luck, friend!

    Your point about the risk of irritation increasing with dampened skin makes much sense. Whenever I apply Vit C to damp skin, it STINGS to high heavens. This sometimes even happens with my niacinamide serum.

Normally I do every single thing she says but I stand firm on applying my moisturizer to my damp skin and then applying differin. My skin has been clear now for months so the differin is working applied after the cream.

      Your dermatologist is not wrong, and you are also not wrong. You see, applying differin after Vanicream does indeed make it less effective, and that is precisely the reason why it is less irritating to your skin. It doesn't mean it won't work, it just means it will take longer for it to work. All you need to do is get used to the speed the medication works. Like riding a bike, you can get there sooner if you peddle faster, but you will also get there if you paddle a bit slower while also being less tired.

      @@courtneyplacey6718 hmmmmm... I could be wrong but wouldn't it make more sense to apply moisturizer immediately after your HA serum? Cause the longer Hylauronic acid sits on your face the more it would potentially draw out moisture from the skin.. And especially if you use a cleanser or two before hand you would want your moisturizer on as soon as possible.

I also save Sunday as my spa day and customize it according to the condition of my skin and that’s also when I use devices like DermaPore or DeraFlash...then at night use very nurturing and reparative skincare that focuses on strengthening my skin barrier.

    Glad I found your video on this. [2.00-2.55] I found this to be very true. I've never had a real "skincare routine" so Jan. 2021 was the year to begin. Using Paula's Choice BHA Liquid Exfoliant and applied right after cleansing to damp skin and had some irritation. On the other hand when I apply the Paula's Choice Calming Toner right after cleansing to damp skin it does NOT irritate my skin. So with the BHA I only use it once a week at night, and I do have to wait for skin to dry before applying! So glad what I was experiencing is "normal" and I just need to adjust - THANKS!!!

    Hey Dr.! I know it's off topic, but I finally got to try the CeraVe tinted mineral sunscreen, and I LOVE IT! It has a thick consistency that makes it easy to spread out and blend in the skin. Beautiful finish! Finally a sunscreen I can actually wear every day because the tint is thick enough to help cover any discoloration and blemishes. Wish they would stock up on it more though; I found it at an Ulta store by accident. It's sold out everywhere else.

      Laura Jean honestly, I’m Mediterranean.. I have light but Olivesque skin tone.. I usually shy away from ‘orange’ hints.. but surprisingly this adapts and blends into my skin beautifully. If you’re super light and pale, you may find it a little darker.. but it may give you a nice bronzed skin also. You’ll have to try to find out. It sucks that it sells out everywhere.

      Sleepy Parrot The main thing that helped was avoiding fragrance and keeping my routine super simple. Fragrance and really warm water are my main triggers. I use Eucerin Baby Wash as my cleanser and Vanicream as my moisturizer at night. In the morning I cleanse since I’m oily and then use Olay Sensitive SPF 15 then follow with Coppertone Pure and Simple SPF 50. It’s all trial and error for me. There have been other products recommended for sensitive skin that caused me to break out.

    Its kind of nice knowing it doesn't matter the order. I always thought it was a pain trying to constantly figure out the rote and procedure of it all. What's so crazy is that many dermatologists will tell you there is an order. One thing I will tell you guys from what I have learned from my own experience....Using an occlusive product at the very end really goes a long way in protecting that moisture barrier. I love to use a good petroleum jelly cream. Got one at Dollar Tree for $1 and it's one of the best investments I have made. My breakouts are gone and my skin feels so supple.

    Thanks for this explanation. I only 'discovered' your videos yesterday (immediately subscribed) and didn't know where to start. I thought this video was a good place. I'm in my 50s and have been using pretty good skincare for a couple decades, but I'm very open to learning more. I've always applied layers according to 'thinnest' to 'thickest' with letting each layer dry before the next, and I was surprised to learn that applying to damp skin may help absorption. I probably use too many layers/products but as it's nearly impossible to know the concentrations when there are multiple ingredients in a particular product so I probably overdo some, but that's more about wasting money than causing damage. I love having a routine that helps me unwind at night and prepare for the day - a few minutes of pampering myself time each day. And I must be doing something right because I love seeing peoples' eyes bulge when I'm occasionally carded for something and they see my age. :)

    Thanks Dr Dray for clarifying these issues. I appreciate and understand that its important to keep it simple so it's not confusing. However there are many videos on promoting the advantages of different serums and it encourages the viewer to include it in their skincare regime. Some people swear by some serums. So its difficult to ignore this info especially if it seems to target a skin issue you might have. Consequently we decide to include it hence introducing more steps into our skincare. So it's not easy to keep it simple🤣

    treatments (dark spots, blemish....)
    day cream
    sun screen if out

      Here you go. Generally, order really doesn’t matter that much but there are a few principles to remember:
      - actives applied to damp skin are absorbed better but also higher risk of irritation
      - nothing can penetrate through petrolatum
      - don’t mix sunscreen or prescription retinoids with moisturizer to prevent uneven application just layer
      Don’t worry about so much about pH. Everything applied will be mixed and diluted all together to some degree and ingredients will penetrate just fine.
