    Thank you for giving me better lessons than the lessons I had at my local skating rink. You break down the movements slowly enough for me to follow, unlike my teachers who would just do it quickly without explaining. You’re great and I’m donating to your channel as a thank you.

      I agree with this! I paid for TWO adult group sessions-- 16 weeks total. Just for the coach to tell us during a practice that we were all skating wrong-- pushing with our toes. But we had not once been taught how to properly forward skate during any of our lessons. When I started, I had never stepped foot on ice and they saw me struggling on the wall and not one coach helped. A girl joined our group later and same thing. I had to personally ask a chatting coach to go help her. It didn't reallt feel that the coaches cared and that was really disappointing. Waste of money. These videos are going to help me so so much. Thank you Coach Julia!

    Hello hello! Me again! I had to stop my adult skating lessons last year due to knee pains. After more than a year of combinations of exploring physical therapy and other somatic educations about posture and better use of our body, I realized that this year I just finally learned how to properly activate and strengthen my glute muscles. These muscles are super important for balancing and hence important for skating. For someone like me, a couch potato, to start learning skating, it is super hard and the glute is so important for me! I am excited to get back to learn skating from the beginning again! Thanks so much for your videos and help before!

I started to do lemons, but my problem was that I did not have the speed and at one point I stopped. Now I see what was wrong, thank you for explaining.

    You're a wonderful skating instructor, probably the best explanations here on TH-cam... Great charisma! But to encourage any beginner skater in their first steps on the ice, make a short sequence how it will look like when trying the first time ;-) It looks so easy and the beginners get frustrated when they struggle and fall... encourage them tp practise, practise and even more practise...

    • @CoachJulia

      @@CoachJulia I remember when I got on the ice the first time... I was 20 y/o and barely could stand upright on the ice. Nevertheless it felt so great and I just wished to be able doing forward crossovers someday. While watching the good skaters at the rink and on videos, I got really frustrated and thought I will never be able to do that, but after many hours of practising I succeeded. Many (adult) beginner skaters give up too early because they don't believe it's possible... so the perfect coach will always tell'em that it is normal to struggle on the ice, be afraid of falling, acutally will falling and et up again :-)

I may be confused a little as I watch a lot if your videos. My coach tells me to go straight back. Both you and my ice coach have amazing credentials....and lots of years of experience coaching. Am I getting this confused with something else? Lol. I had my lesson today, and I feel like I'm back on my first day. Coach Julia, please help 😔. Coach Julia - when our weight is over our gliding leg, how is the weight distributed through the gliding foot? Should we think of the weight as evenly distributed through the foot? Over the arches? In our heels? Thank you in advance.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you are gliding forward on one foot in this position, you will want the weight over the arches. You have a longer section of blade on the ice this way as the front has more of a curve.

  • @merryjoycie
    @merryjoycie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for these. So basically my skating instruction is all over the place. In the past 26 years or so, I have had to start and stop my training no less than a dozen times. According to American ISI, I am Beta level. But everytime I restart my training, I'm practically Pre-Alpha level. It's annoying. And I will be retesting myself when I find a rink I can frequently skate at. Most of the rinks here have competitive trainers, and I am more recreational. But I love having solid techniques. Your videos are basically a godsend. But I was hoping you could do a video on a good beginner/intermediate on-ice warm-ups!
    You also responded to my other comments. I will give those a try. Thank you for your diligence. :D

    Thanks a lot for the video! Look forward for more! I am an 30+ adult just taking class! Watching lots of videos on TH-cam. Really like how you break steps down to smaller chunks. I am still confused though about forward stroking in many ways. For example on my class coach says to push back not side, but that’s hard and one of my side goes more side than the other. Any suggestions? Another important message I got from is that it is at the same time of pushing you shift weight to the skating leg, is that right? This exact weight shifting tune is still something I am trying very hard to figure out after 3 classes. Some people seem to suggest the weight shift already a bit to skating leg and then shift further when pushing. Also as a beginner, I find it hard to shift my weight, likely just because I am afraid and always want to keep Center of gravity in the middle. Thank you very much again and look forward to your reply!

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So glad you found the video helpful. As to your first question about the pushing angle, you want to push at a diagonal angle away from your body. So not straight back, and not directly to the side, but away from your hip at a diagonal. For shifting the weight, you can start out with shifting then pushing, and then as you progress you will want to make it a more fluid motion with the shifting and the push happening almost simotaniously. It is a good idea to practice one foot glides, both with your free knee bent and free foot beside your skating leg, and with your free knee straight and foot extended behind you. Let me know if you have any more questions!

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It should get better over time as your legs get stronger. But, if you want to do something to speed that process up, think about exercise you can do to strengthen your adductors, those squeezing muscles on the inside of your thighs. Skating demands a lot out of those muscles, so if you strengthen them, it will only help your skating.

    when i watch ISU womens skaters, their knees are bent most of the time (always when skating backwards, often when skating forwards- even during the Stsq). how important is it to have your legs go straight after the glide and work on that skill? do your legs go back to being straight with backwards stroking too?

      I'm a total beginner, but teach yoga and would recommend trying to balance at home, in and out of skates, in the same way. That way you built muscle memory and today I was able to do a 1 foot glide. :) I also have the issue with only pushing with the left foot. I think it's normal if you're right handed, and just takes a lot of practice. (Like marching across the ice is much easier for me on right foot than left, too.)

      ThriveDiaries so I can kind of balance on one foot without moving on ice but not long enough. I still can’t get the one foot glide though. I think I can hold it for maybe one second but that’s it

    Hello, I am one of your subscribers from China. Your tutorial videos are so clear and useful for skating learner, and really help me a lot. You know, it is not easy for Chinese skating learners to log on TH-cam. Do you mind I repost your video with Chinese subtitles to a Chinese video website(www.bilibili.com)? There are so many ice skater learners in China, but I hardly find good Chinese TH-camrs on ice skating. I just do this for fun. If someday I got some income from your video, I would let you know for sure.

      Thank you for the positive feedback. I am glad you like my channel. I am ok with having my videos posted to bilinili, but please be sure to credit the original source. Thanks.

      Try thinking about actually turning the toes in towards each other, rather than relying on your adductor muscles to squeeze them in.

    Dear Coach Julia, I emailed you but haven't get your response. I am hoping to be able to get your permission to share your video on a Chinese video site. I will act within all the laws and restrictions and my sharing will not involve monetization. I wanted to do this because I recently found a group of Chinese skaters. They are very eager to learn but they have limited access to TH-cam. I will also likely help to add translation either in the video or as separate documents when I share them. Your original link and credit will be specified as well.

      So interesting! It’s amazing how each of our bodies works so differently dependent on how we have become accustomed to using it.
