This man: - survived from the earthquake in 2011 - leaving home to canada and struggling with communication at 16 - Asthma problems causing stamina issues - asthma attack 2 weeks before winning 2017 worlds - champion 3 months after an ankle injury that could’ve ruined his career - and so so so many injuries Yet he never stops trying, challenging, and being Yuzuru Hanyu. He’s truly the strongest fighter and never uses his weaknesses as excuses. He does everything to be the best of himself. GOAT
When you realize this was a performance of a man who had a career ending injury 3 months before the olympics and started to train his quads just 2-3 weeks before the competition
@@lindaba4735 He feel on 4Lz on practice and had to withdraw. There are many detailed articles but it was a ligement injury on his right foot (landing foot) and he couldn't get a surgery because there is already nothing much left holding it. On this performance he was using strong painkillers. After a year at same competition (Cup of Russia), after breaking a world record in sp, he feel on 4Lo at the practice and injured the same foot again. Skated his foot swollen, won it but had to withdraw everything else but the World Championship (he was still not healed but finished 2nd aka a defeat in his book). This time its the same foot but the other side again a ligement injury. He said "I’ve consulted many people, but it’s not something that can be fixed with surgery. After my big injury, the area has become prone to injury even with a little impact. Even the same level of shock seems to impact more." After all that i have no idea what is holding his ankle tbh. He is currently skating in such state and aiming to go for unimaginable 4A.
@I was born a poor black child - Navin Johnson and on top of that he was less than a point short breaking short and combined total score records and 3 points less than freeXD really this guy is at another level
Yes especially in Japanese and Chinese the characters have special meanings, Yuzuru means tightening a bowstring, Hanyu means the feathers grow......so poetically beautiful
@@itsyaboichilde5397 Good looking ? No, the beauty in this sport is the beauty they create on stage by doing what they love. It's not a question of good looking. It's a question of passion. Please do the difference.
He literally is. Some other comment stated that he was injured only shortly before this performance. It's an injury on his landing ankle that can't be fixed even with surgery. Still he trained really hard and in the end won gold. Sad, yet amazing and very impressive :o
Doesn't your back hurt? For carrying the whole figure skating industry alone. edit: and he is going to Beijing 2022! hoping he will make another history written in his name.
@Trúc Vivian Phạm shoma's quite good at performing, but not at jumping. His 4F is ridiculous, it's not a flip, it's a floop Bonus: if he performs a program without UR, i’d be surprise lol. His quads are like 3.25 rotations with over 180 degree prerotation lmao. But he’s good at performing, i mean skating skills. Yuzu is the whole package: incredible at both performing and jumping, he has true textbook jumps, his programs have always been the hardest with only about 10 crossovers and many many difficult transitions and footwork and ofc, super difficult jumps. That’s why Yuzu’s so special. Now we have Nathan who is amazing at jumping but not very good at other things, on the other hand, Shoma’s good at performing but bad at jumping. They’re not as complete as Yuzu. In fact, a complete skater is really rare, actually i think Yuzu is the only one (i don’t know much about fs before Patrick and Daisuke era, so i’d be happy if someone acknowledge me someone else?) I write these bonus thing bc I’m afraid that u’ll misunderstand that i hate or criticize Shoma or sth else. What i wrote is actually popular in FS fandom, like, c’mon we have cameras, the audiences aren’t blind, they know when skaters cause mistakes. Sometimes the rules are just... flexible and skaters aren’t called for their mistakes, like Shoma’s UR and some ladies’. . . . Well the rules aren’t always flexible for everyone, just for some specific people lol. . . . And ofc not including Yuzu.
@@Bachingchung I mean classic japanese culture isnt common all people think of is Sushi and Anime and maybe some other stuff. But not classic japanese music.
I don't mean to offend other figure skaters and their fans, but seeing other skates make me realize just how amazing Yuzuru is. You get used to his transitions, elegance in landing jumps, choices of when he jumps to match the music, and so much more that some skates honestly look a bit bland and unimpressive. I mean, that should probably be obvious because he's always scoring and ranking high, but it really just hits you how there is a difference between the best of the bests and others.
He did this masterpiece after a career threatening injury, on painkillers, on a sprained ankle, and jumping quads for only 2/3 weeks. YOUR FAVS COULD NEVER.

(Not very) fun fact: Yuzu had injured his ankle really badly before the Olympics, and lost several months of preparation almost until a few weeks before the competition. He decided to go back to training using painkillers, and is using them even in this performance. Also, during the practice before this, he couldn't land a single quad. But miraculously, he landed them when it really mattered. To me, his mental fortitude is just as impressive as the beautiful skating.
he only had 6 weeks to prepare himself for the Olympics. He has to train in pain while his training mate, Javier Fernandez was training his full program with all of those quads.
imagine being hot, tall, dark haired, japanese, having one of the coolest names in the world, fit, nice butted, can figure skate, are the best at it, have the determination to work really hard despite being injured and having asthma, earn gold in the figure skating olympics, and look like an anime boy.... At this moment, he was competing with an unhealed injury and was on painkillers. As he passes into the second half, you could see that he was fighting the excruciating pain in his desperate attempts to land the remaining quads. Considering he already has asthma and with a weakened ankle, to endure the painful landings and not even touch the ice during the slight stumbles, it was simply his golden resilience, the burning desire to defend his medal and his unbeatable passion and love for the sport. I may not be the only one to say this, but we are seeing a living legend...and though I may never be able to see him in person, I am just truly happy to live in the same generation as Yuzuru Hanyu.
Yes!! True, I could also notice his face and Iam sure there was pain on his injury but that what makes him inspiring because he still did everything the best trying to forget the pain to give it all on the skate!!
Important fact for any newbies here: it was 4 months after a really serious ankle injury and Yuzu skate on painkillers. And obviously it was his first competition after that injury, so no one knew if he okay or not.
@@thatnerd7351 we all hope for this. But year after in November 2018 was another serious injury (I saw it with my own eyes in Moscow)... Yuzu is great skater, but I wish he would be a little luckier with his health.
It's not easy being a fan of Yuzuru Hanyu. * He gets injured/ill in almost every season of his senior career. * Insisting to compete while injured/ill. 1. Worlds 2012 - sprained ankle 2. Worlds 2013- flu 3. COC 2014- collission with Han Yan resulting in multitude of injuries. 4. NHK 2014- just 2 weeks after COC thus still unhealed. The only time he was out of the podium since winning GPF 2013. 5. Japan Nationals 2014- competed while oozing blood and pus on the abdomen from a bladder birth defect. Bound his abdomen with bandage and duct tape to avoid ruining his costume. He was rushed to the hospital immediately after the competition. 6. Japan Nationals 2016- He withdraw due to flu. 7. Worlds 2016- He didn't inform his coach that he was experiencing pain on his foot since the beginning of the season. Still competed the whole GP breaking World records back 2 back. He exacerbated his injuries resulting to a meltdown of an FP in Worlds. He was diagnosed with Lisfranc injury. He seriously thought it was the end of his carreer. 8. NHK 2017- went to OP while feverish. Tried jumping quad lutz, fell hard, damaging his ankle ligaments severely. He withdraw from competing. 9. Olympics 2018- After a news blackout for months, he showed up in Korea reassuring everyone that he's now feeling okay to compete. He successfully defended his olympic title, only to announce later that he's still not yet 100% recovered and that he only got through the competition with the help of pain medications. He withdraw from Worlds 2018 to recuperate. 10. Rostelecom Cup 2018- He reinjured the same ankle while trying to jump the quad loop in practice. Still insisted on competing. Went to podium to get his gold medal wearing crutches. I really can't believe that I wrote this huge wall of text just to whine about the agony of being a fanyu and list each and every one of Yuzu's propensity in ignoring his well-being. But who am I kidding? Even if he's this reckless, I still support him because he is a good man and I want to see how much farther he can go with his dreams despite having body limitations. He is a huge inspiration.
@@vassanab4243I thought it was two weeks before Worlds 2017. But yeah... I was really unsure whether I should include that or not. There was also the issue of Japan Nationals 2019. He was wearing 2 cardiac/asthma monitors during the competition for God's sake!!
Magnificent performance, I will never forget this Olympics. Both his SP and FP are masterpieces. In addition to his brilliant skating, Yuzuru Hanyu has this inimitable aura that nobody else possesses. What an athlete!

Unfortunately, in a lot of his performances, it's cringe. Being overly dramatic isn't it I guess 🙄 Not to mention the fanservice he uses to get the attention and dedication of his fans... Playing with his plushie at 27 when he knows he is filmed. Acting like an idol (sync singing) during competitions as he knows he is filmed by Japanese medias..😂 Nothing genuine in hanyu anymore and it shows. 😔 Everything in his behavior is planed and with a purpose. At 5:38 you can tell his right ankle, the one he injured badly, is giving him serious pain. And this was AFTER strong painkillers. How he managed to even finish this program is unbelievable.
12 senior seasons, 19 world records, first to break the 100, 200, and 300 point barrier, the only men’s single skater who has ever completed the Super Slam, and the first to land the 4Lo, 4T3A, 4Teu3F in competition. One and only, the goat, the legend, Yuzuru Hanyu. Thank you for everything!

Yuzuru is a truly hero, a legendary skater, and a Prince of the ice. He is a born skater. He survived the 2011 March 11 earthquake and Tsunami, when his family had to sleep in a small space and eat small rice balls distributed by the shelter, unable to go to skate for many days. He yet moved around the country, seeking a chance to skate, not for games but for his own challenges and for his love for the people who suffered from the loss of lives and housing. Even now he continues donating most of his awards and funds received for his championships to his native town every year. His skating is not just a game but it is his soul, his life, and his love for the people, ice rink, and his family. That is why his skating has everything about a human love, beautiful and great reflection of his being himself.
Very beautifully written comment that is accurate and touching! Great job! So many people admire Hanyu Yuzuru's skating, but they stop at that and don't bother to learn about his life and backstory. @@2Y1720 Thank you for your words on my comment. It is true that his "appreciation" is reflected to all of his skating performances. CBC commentator mentioned that Yuzuru is always respectful for his teammates, especially Javi, and his coaches, his competitors, his fans, non-fans, and everybody who is around him. He is pure, always honest to himself and to everyone. His spirit is strong to keep his appreciation and respect intact.

@Giovanna Bencivenga Herrador That's what training is for. If you make a mistake and only think about that, then your concentration is gone forever. The first thing a trainer would tell you is that mistakes aren't reversable and therefore it doesn't make sense to think about them once they happened. After the performance you can look back and watch what you did wrong, so you improve from that. But during the performance once you made a mistake, let it be. Go on, concentrate on what's to come and don't look back.
it's absolutely jaw-dropping that yuzuru was able to accomplish that level of technicality while stomaching the definite pain he was facing in his right ankle.

idk why people say figure skating is boring. something about figure skating is so satisfying to watch, especially to good, captivating music like this. bravo 👏
It feels hypnotic in a way. Moved the mouse after about 3 minutes and it felt like it had gone on so much longer than that. Not in a "oh when will this end" way but it felt like time slowed down while watching this.
i feel like it's mostly just taste and preference. after i found hanyu (this exact video, tbh) few weeks ago, ive started watching other figure skating performances and some of them did bore me, oof. what i found more interesting was that some performance from one athlete really captivated me from beginning to end (e.g. for hanyu: this Seimei performance, the Parisianne Walkway one) and then some performances by the same athlete really didnt captivate me at all from beginning to end, or at least some parts of it. (hanyu's Chopin performance in the same Olympic year is one of them.) but i agree, when it's done *really* well and to a music that suits it best, it's among the top of artistic performances.

In the Grand Prix final 2014 (Yuzu won btw) he announced retirement at Japanese nationals 2014. So a bunch of Tatsuki fans are mad that he lost to Yuzuru at worlds (because the points gap was so small and some people feel Yuzu was over scores having just won the Olympics) and also sad that he retired, and thus hold some hostility to Yuzu I think. @@aniruddhajoshi8324 , that technique where he balances on one foot with his left hand on the ice is called a Hydroblade. Together with the Ina Bauer, it's his signature choreo sequence. bangtan besnatchin he has mentioned a while ago that having earned his second olympic gold medal (which btw, he was the first person to win 2 gold medals consecutively in 66 years), he is now trying to skate for himself and enjoy it as much as he can because as mentioned by the other person, he’s the only male figure skater to have earned a super slam in their career (which means that he won every single major competition in basically his entire skating career ever since he was little). he didn’t win worlds 2019 and gpf 2019, which is honestly a little upsetting considering he was underscored in both events, and he expressed his ‘kuyashii’ - a japanese word to express frustration - towards the turnout of things, considering the margin between him and the gold medalist wouldve never been as large. his coach tracy wilson has even confirmed that he’s been practicing a quad axel, which is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. hopefully he’ll be the first to land it, but most importantly, i hope that by the end of this quarantine he is able to perform at his best after resting and giving his major ankle injuries a break. he’s definitely had a lot of ankle injuries in his career (especially nearing these last 3-4 years) and it’s unfortunate to see him struggling and clenching his fists whenever he loses a competition. let’s all pray that he’ll be as healthy and as strong as ever for this new season!!
Love him or hate him, for whatever reason, you have to admit how strong and technically gifted he is. Or perhaps gifted is not the right word since he works so hard. He performed a program of this caliber and ended up winning gold whilst nursing an injury!
He sustained the injury during NHK practice back in november. It's lateral ligament damage to the right ankle (the landing ankle). It kept him off ice for 2 months, and he only had 3 weeks to train jumps for the Olympics. He started training quads 2 weeks before Pyeongchang.

When you realize this was a performance of a man who had a career ending injury 3 months before the olympics and started to train his quads just 2-3 weeks before the competition
What injuries did he have?
Even the same level of shock seems to impact more."
After all that i have no idea what is holding his ankle tbh. He is currently skating in such state and aiming to go for unimaginable 4A.

@Trúc Vivian Phạm shoma's quite good at performing, but not at jumping. His 4F is ridiculous, it's not a flip, it's a floop
Bonus: if he performs a program without UR, i’d be surprise lol.
In fact, a complete skater is really rare, actually i think Yuzu is the only one (i don’t know much about fs before Patrick and Daisuke era, so i’d be happy if someone acknowledge me someone else?)
I write these bonus thing bc I’m afraid that u’ll misunderstand that i hate or criticize Shoma or sth else. I don't mean to offend other figure skaters and their fans, but seeing other skates make me realize just how amazing Yuzuru is. He's so good at skating that he failed two jumps and still won. That's talent right there.
He didn't really "fail" the jumps, he still got points for the executed jumps but -GOE for the landings, without the constant pain in his ankle it wouldn't have happen.
I don't understand why after the finalization the score kept getting deducted
@@turinmormegil7715 They have technical controllers that go over the footage, sometimes the score might go lower or higher. Sometimes it takes a really long time to get the score out because the judges are probably trying to decide over a certain element that isn’t clear.

This performance hits different when I realised he was injured beforehand. You wouldn't even think that with the way he's skating. It's so beautiful and I admire his resilience.
What happened??I mean what was the injury 😅
@@princessmadhu4208 read the most liked comments itś all explained pretty well there at the top
I remember having my finals yet I was too worried during his performance even more than for my own future. Watching him stand back and perform with that ankle, I was so relieved when he pulled through. The two jumps when his ancle wobbled had my throat choked. Haha. True legend he is. I always come back here when I feel like I am at my limit. He's truly an inspiration. ❤️
@@princessmadhu4208 I don't remember exactly what the injury was, but he started getting back on the ice only 2-3 months before the Olympics. He was injured really, really badly, and at the beginning the doctors said that he probably wouldn't and shouldn't compete in 2018 Olympics. He only started attempting difficult jumps such as triples and quads about 2 weeks before competition. He didn't attempt jumps in warmup and he looked like he was in a lot of pain as well.
@@goldenp3arl874 he actually got injured 3 months before the Oly and it was indeed really bad and it seemed like there was no way he could get back to prepare in time. He got back on ice only few weeks before the Olys, tentative at first and starting to jump the very difficult jumps very shortly before the competition.
All this being said, what he managed to accomplish here skating on painkillers and with his ankle probably being held together with duct tape(metaphorically? speaking...),and also given this situation and the timeline,is basically a miracle,if he were american,Hollywood would've already made a movie about this incredible story.
The fact this video came out 4 years ago yet there are people actively commenting to this day just shows you how much of an incredible performance this was
probably because this is in their recommended because of the current figure skating in beijing. Doesnt take anything away from this incredible performance tho

This skate must go in history as the BEST.
Harumi H. Beautiful comment! 💝 Yuzuru is a great athlete and a true humanitarian! 💝
I thought this was very inspirational! Thank you so much for sharing your love and stalking habits with us!
And to think that this amazingly respectable guy is being fetishized in social media.. Yeah, it made me sick.
Very beautifully written comment that is accurate and touching! Great job! So many people admire Hanyu Yuzuru's skating, but they stop at that and don't bother to learn about his life and backstory. Thank you so much for taking the time to inform other's of how much he has sacrificed and how much he has given to his country and to his fans. He is such a dedicated person, and I will him respect forever.
@@2Y1720 Thank you for your words on my comment. It is true that his "appreciation" is reflected to all of his skating performances. For him, everyone, every rink, every coach, every competitor is what he appreciates. Every year, he donates his awards to Sendai City and Sendai Skating rink, and recently he donated some funds to Sendai Rink to install "Thermographic Monitor." CBC commentator mentioned that Yuzuru is always respectful for his teammates, especially Javi, and his coaches, his competitors, his fans, non-fans, and everybody who is around him. He is pure, always honest to himself and to everyone. His spirit is strong to keep his appreciation and respect intact.
Can we talk about how much precious his smile is. Even after those little mistakes he's so calm and still having fun. I'd be panicking if i was him which is impossible

@Giovanna Bencivenga Herrador I hope you can follow that dream. Sounds awesome :D
it's absolutely jaw-dropping that yuzuru was able to accomplish that level of technicality while stomaching the definite pain he was facing in his right ankle.

idk why people say figure skating is boring. something about figure skating is so satisfying to watch, especially to good, captivating music like this. bravo 👏
Figure skating IS boring
Yuzuru skating tho 😏
It feels hypnotic in a way. Moved the mouse after about 3 minutes and it felt like it had gone on so much longer than that. Not in a "oh when will this end" way but it felt like time slowed down while watching this.
it was boring when i watched Nathan .. (although he is better mow).
i feel like it's mostly just taste and preference. after i found hanyu (this exact video, tbh) few weeks ago, ive started watching other figure skating performances and some of them did bore me, oof. what i found more interesting was that some performance from one athlete really captivated me from beginning to end (e.g. for hanyu: this Seimei performance, the Parisianne Walkway one) and then some performances by the same athlete really didnt captivate me at all from beginning to end, or at least some parts of it. (hanyu's Chopin performance in the same Olympic year is one of them.)
but i agree, when it's done *really* well and to a music that suits it best, it's among the top of artistic performances.
And the sound of the ice scrapping

Yes, especially the author of YOI anime holds hostility against Yuzuru.
Qiuzi XU ehhhh??????
@@jocykim lmao I don’t know the full details but the author of YOI is a Tatsuki Machida fan, and Yuuri’s career trajectory in YOI mimics Tatsuki’s to a much greater degree than Yuzu’s.
Thing is though, after a somewhat-successful career, Tatsuki won silver at worlds 2014, something like 0.1-0.3 points behind Yuzu, then after placing 5th? Or 6th? In the Grand Prix final 2014 (Yuzu won btw) he announced retirement at Japanese nationals 2014. So a bunch of Tatsuki fans are mad that he lost to Yuzuru at worlds (because the points gap was so small and some people feel Yuzu was over scores having just won the Olympics) and also sad that he retired, and thus hold some hostility to Yuzu I think.
I don’t know if the author really is hostile to Yuzu though cause she’s never really outright said it I think? Someone correct me if I’m wrong btw I don’t know a lot about this.

4:33... when he glided his hand over the ice like that......... absolutely mesmerizing. yuzuru hanyu is unbelievably good.
It's his signature technique, the Hydroblade! 😊
It’s beautiful... my favourite escene, magnificent...
I am new to this, can u tell me why it was so special??
@@aniruddhajoshi8324 , that technique where he balances on one foot with his left hand on the ice is called a Hydroblade. It's somewhat more seen in ice dance and sometimes done in ice shows or ex galas, but Yuzuru has had a Hydroblade in every free skate and ex since 2015. Together with the Ina Bauer, it's his signature choreo sequence. To me, it's really special because I haven't seen many people do it the way he does it, with a right inside edge, and his is also especially memorable because he times it so well with the music! Also, this variation that he does here isn't hard (for him at least,) but he has a more difficult variation where he is nearly lying on the ice, which has led to some mishaps 😂 Anyway, hope this helps!
3:26 what about this

hey, im new! i have some questions. does he still skate? is he okay? cause i just saw an article about his ankle. is he the best at ice skating? has he ever had 2 defeats? because i saw that he got defeated sadly but won 2nd place after a tragic accident.
@@meri7927 yes yuzu is going to skate in the next season for sure he confirmed it himself, yes he is fine but he still has injury in his right ankle because of an accident and he couldnt even walk but he still skated even after all the painkillers he said it still hurt a lot, yes sadly he came 2nd place in the grand prix last year (nathen Chen came 1st) but on the ISU charts which do not show a single skate but every thing combined yuzuru hanyu is currently in first place I'll put that link wait.. Yes yuzu is the most famous and best figure skater in the men's singles right now. He is the first man to have broken the 100-point barrier in the men's short program, the 200-point barrier in the men's free skating, and the 300-point barrier in the combined total score. Hanyu is the first Asian figure skater competing in men's singles to win the Olympic gold.
Yuzuru Hanyu is the G.O.A.T (The Greatest of All time) of men's figure skating. He is the 2- times olympic champions.
He is a two-time Olympic champion (2014, 2018), a two-time World champion (2014, 2017), a four-time Grand Prix Final champion (2013-2016), a Four Continents champion (2020), the 2010 World Junior champion, the 2009-10 Junior Grand Prix Final champion, and a four-time Japanese national champion (2012-2015). He has also medaled at four other World Championships, taking bronze in 2012, and silver in 2015, 2016 and 2019. Upon winning the 2020 Four Continents Championships, Hanyu became the first male singles skater to achieve a Super Slam, having won all major competitions in his senior and junior career.

GOAT indeed! i actually found out about him because of tiktok!!
bangtan besnatchin he has mentioned a while ago that having earned his second olympic gold medal (which btw, he was the first person to win 2 gold medals consecutively in 66 years), he is now trying to skate for himself and enjoy it as much as he can because as mentioned by the other person, he’s the only male figure skater to have earned a super slam in their career (which means that he won every single major competition in basically his entire skating career ever since he was little). he didn’t win worlds 2019 and gpf 2019, which is honestly a little upsetting considering he was underscored in both events, and he expressed his ‘kuyashii’ - a japanese word to express frustration - towards the turnout of things, considering the margin between him and the gold medalist wouldve never been as large. his coach tracy wilson has even confirmed that he’s been practicing a quad axel, which is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. hopefully he’ll be the first to land it, but most importantly, i hope that by the end of this quarantine he is able to perform at his best after resting and giving his major ankle injuries a break. he’s definitely had a lot of ankle injuries in his career (especially nearing these last 3-4 years) and it’s unfortunate to see him struggling and clenching his fists whenever he loses a competition. let’s all pray that he’ll be as healthy and as strong as ever for this new season!!
Love him or hate him, for whatever reason, you have to admit how strong and technically gifted he is. Or perhaps gifted is not the right word since he works so hard. He performed a program of this caliber and ended up winning gold whilst nursing an injury!
really? what was the injury? he is amazing
Justin Bruen there are people who hates him?
Justin Bruen yeah, he has to take a break after. He wouldn't be competing in worlds because he hasn't healed yet.
Luna Kelly but what is the injury that he sustained before this performance
He sustained the injury during NHK practice back in november. It's lateral ligament damage to the right ankle (the landing ankle). It kept him off ice for 2 months, and he only had 3 weeks to train jumps for the Olympics. He started training quads 2 weeks before Pyeongchang.
