    Backward stroking is where I'm at right now, the struggle is real!! (but I say that about everything 😆) I got my forward crossovers so I'm sure I'll get this too ... eventually! 🤞🏼 Your videos are the best out there 👌🏼

    This video (and couple of other videos from you channel) kept me sane through my lessons. My teacher is good, she always picks the best exercises for the day. With everything closed due to the lockdown, and luckily living next to a couple of outdoor rinks, I decided to make this winter the one when I’d learn how to ice skate properly. Your videos have been very useful! I have a gymnastics background, which probably helps, but I’m amazed at how fast I’m getting the hang of it, thanks to your explanations and exercises! Thank you 🤗

  • @GingerKiwiDev

    Thank you! I skated for the first time in decades this afternoon. I had never really skated much before. Your video is the perfect length and I’m looking forward to trying out new skills. I’m using hockey skates for this season. I’m wary of toe picks because on a high school field trip I tripped over a toe pick and someone skated over my fingers. But I have a dance background, so with the help of TH-cam, I might just get figure skates next year.
    We’re in lockdown in Ontario, Canada and the only community recreation activity is outdoor ice skating. No lessons are being given, just 45 min/day/person open ice time with masks on.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh my gosh, how horrible about your fingers. I have seen accidents like that (usually with crazy teenagers for some reason 😆). I would encourage you to give toepicks another try though. So much fun to be had once you get the hang of them. I truly look forward to the day that these lockdowns disappear to a part of distant memory.

      @@CoachJulia Hi Julia, thank you so much for replying. :-) I passed your channel on to a couple I met while skating.
      Given all the restrictions there's not much use for toe picks this season even if I wasn't just getting used to skating. I found out this week that only thing we're allowed to do on ice in Toronto is skate forward in a circle around the rink - no backwards skating, no turns, just skating around the rink (but at least the rinks are still open). I've started to find my balance (thank you dance background!), and am looking forward next year to skates that fit better (especially around the ankles) than plastic hockey skates, and taking some figure skating lessons.

      Hi! Thanks for answering. I have problems with backward one foot gliding. Off ice I can run and jump on one foot backwards. But on the ice... I don't know whether it is a problem of balance or a problem of fear. Would you have some suggestions for me?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Often it is a confidence issue, but you can also work on core strength so that it is easier to keep your torso stable over your lower body as you glide, as well as keeping in mind that your weight needs to shift so that you are lined up over your gliding foot. Try lifting through your torso and your free hip so that you are engaging those muscles as well as stacking yourself up over your gliding leg. 🙂

      @Martha-eg4xq 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CoachJulia Hi! Thank you for your advices. Actually, the exercices you showed (back swizzles, half back swizzles with lifting foot) helped a lot. I feel more confident now when skating backwords. I am really gratefull. Would that be possible for you to make a video on three turns? I skate in a team with more advanced people and the trainer hasn't always the time to explain basic mouvements to me. Thank you in advance.

    Good video....lots of good tips. The focus on shifting your head and hip over the weight bearing foot is helpful to me. I am a novice skater and I can skate backwards very well and I love it, but I am doing it exactly opposite of this, putting my weight on the foot that is swiveling rather than on the foot that is gliding. I will need a lot of practice with the technique taught here to break that bad habit. One question: Near the end of the video when you teach the full stroke, you don't explain what is the purpose of lifting that foot before moving on to the next stroke. What is the reason for learning to do that?

    Anyway, I just watched your tutoria, the beginner tutorial, forward swizzle, this video, and the how to stop.
    I can't be patient to try that.
    Ready to fall again.
    Week ago, it was my first time trying to skate, but without proper knowledge at all.

    This is amazing! I've never skated before and I am kind of getting a hang of the forward swizzles. You break it down really good, which most TH-camrs fail to do.
    But I can't get enough momentum and most of the time I stop before my toes can meet again. Sometimes I can do it and even combine it with another forward swizzle but that's rare. One more thing is that I can't balance on one foot. Like as soon as I lift a foot I feel like I'm gonna tip over towards either the inside or outside edge and I freak out. I can march forward and glide on both feet but can't lift one for more than a second. Do you have any tips for that?

    Hi, I am having trouble with these, at the end of the movement I'm loosing my balance - as I am touching the ice with the toe pick while finishing the movement.. To me it seems my weight is too much in front but duno why. Could it be that my blades aren't flat - they are my mum 1960s :-)

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, you actually don’t want your blades to be flat, figure skate blades should have a curve going under the ball of the foot up to the toe pick. This curve is called the rocker. This is super important for jumping and spinning. Most likely you. Just need to get used to standing a little farther back on your blade, nearer to the arch of your foot. Good luck!!

    • @LitttleCreatureInc
      @LitttleCreatureInc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, tx, finally I have worked it out -once I've found the place. I was leaning too forward. For me it is rather very still position with the weight rather at the lateral arch-almost bellow the ankle - than boll of the foot and not as much of bending knee exercise (as I thought from you movie) than inside thigh and surae muscles. If I find the place it qoes easily.

    Loved your video :)
    When I do backward stroking, i notice that when I lift my foot forward my shoulders kind of crunch forward also a little like I am doing a mini ab crunch. It must have something to do with where my weight is in my blade. Also, it looks like my posture is leaning a little forward like I am sticking my bottom out but I cant seem yet to get comfortable leaning back a little more to become comfortable with my balance on the blade. Any tips for how to get better posture and stop the little ab crunch thing my shoulders are doing when lifting my leg?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! So sorry I didn’t see this before! I am glad you enjoyed the video. Instead of thinking of leaning back, try engaging your core and the muscles between your shoulder blade, to keep your back straight, and then bend in the knees more to help with balance. Skaters often bend in the hips (sticking the butt out) instead of bending at the knees which allows for better posture. Hope that helps!
