    These are by far the best skating videos on TH-cam. Everyone else says "Today I'm going to teach you how to do crossovers", then does some crossovers, then says "And that's how you do crossovers". End of video… Thanks so much, and please keep going!

    I really like how you're breaking this down into simpler steps. When I was first taught crossovers in my lesson, the instructor was basically like, "here's what it looks like. Now you try." While this move is learned early on and therefore considered elementary, it's still quite difficult and I feel like a lot of people forget that. So thank you for this video

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I am so glad you liked the breakdown. I have so many really young students that I feel just wouldn’t grasp it if I tried having them do it all in one shot. Plus they often lack the muscle control to do a proper crossover and I don’t want them creating bad habits that I will just have to fix later.

    • @chapin3206
      @chapin3206 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      lol that's a problem I'm facing a lot. When I first started (I was taking public lessons), my teacher would simply perform the moves and ask us to copy. It was extremely difficult for me to get the basics down. We were never told about posture or the breaking down of even simple strokes. Even now, I still struggle with basics because of these bad foundations.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      It always amazes me when I hear about instructors NOT INSTRUCTING! It's crazy to assume that a student will improve by purely copying or by repetition. Moves need to be broken down so that a skater understands the mechanics. 😬

      @kingsley2052 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The kid in the back is a perfect example of things people who just view figure skating from afar _don’t_ see
    As someone who doesn’t actually figure skate but is learning, I’ve learned that everything I watched isn’t _just_ what figure skating is, there’s falling, there’s getting hurt, but there’s also getting back up and trying again

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are absolutely right. Skating takes a lot of unseen perseverance and resilience and the girl in the background certainly is a good example of just that.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Well, ‘easy’ is relative in Figure skating. It all depends on how much skating you have done. As you skate, you just keep learning harder and harder things so it never feels like you are learning easy things. 😁

    I love you so much, Julia! You're literally my savior! I'm a student at uni and the only way I get money from is tutoring English & Korean (I'm from Russia) and so I barely could afford Jackson Excels and some basic equipment for ice skating. Sadly, I'm still not able to have a coach, it's too expensive. But luckily, I have you ❤ Even though you can't tell me what my mistakes are, your tutorials are so detailed and informative that I don't really need you to see my mistakes, I can just rewatch the tutorial and improve it myself. And the fact that I learned stroking, swizzles, backwards skating, one leg skating, toe tip jumps, bunny hops, pistol, backward & forward crossovers, two feet spin, different stops, bilman, one foot spin and some more in just about 6 hours is crazy! The only factors that also helped me were me roller skating frequently and doing it confidently enough & my determination with strong love for ice.
    I just really wanted to tell you that you're like a fairy that makes people's dreams come true! Keep it up, please. Your work is worldwide helpful.
    I just turned 20, tho, a reminder that it's never late to start figure skating. Just do it for fun, no need to become an Olympic champion.

    I'm a 71 year old male and would like to be a proficient recreational skater by the end of the year. Started taking 4- lesson series on Jan 8, 2020 and was practice skating 2-3 times a week till the virus shut down my rink. Now it feels like I'm starting all over again. My next series of lessons, the instructor had me skating the circle and lifting one foot but never said why. After I watched your video, now I know that the exercise is to prepare me for the cross-over. Thanks!!! Al T., Long Beach, CA

    I am ready to try this, I practiced the pumps and one leg. So next time I hit the ice I am going to move forward to try this. I can see myself hitting the ice already - and quite literally! Haven't had many falls, so I think the time has come for me to have some.

    I forgot about the half pumps in between and did two crossovers in a row, and fell on my knees and bruised them 😢 the steps are really helpful and I can’t wait to go practise them more!

    Very helpful. I had passed bronze moves and was nearing completion of silver moves when I was forced to stop skating for a while due to unrelated neck injury. So after seven years crossovers on my "bad side," (clockwise rotation" seemed like I almost a beginner. This video extremely beneficial!

    Working on these right now but I’m worse than everyone else in my class 😂 the hip/leg muscle that runs under (or over? idk) my IT band seems to be too weak. I will say that I seem to be better than others at keeping my upper body positioned properly so at least I’m not completely a disaster… growing up in dance was good for something lol

    i have a question - Why the last step is lift up the toe?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you so much! I have you lift the toe at the end to prevent toe pushing with the second foot. This also helps to build strength so that when you do a more advanced crossover you can push through with that foot without using the toe pick.

    After watching part 2 I finally understand why need the crossover exercise. I am so happy that now I can dress up and wear my skates to do the crossover walk at home on my carpet! Haha. Counting down to the hopefully rinks opening soon! Thanks so much again!

    • @meteorcube
      @meteorcube 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Question though: for the walk, the crossed over foot, does it need to be in certain edge or it doesn’t matter at the beginning and can try to put it on inside edge by a knee bend?

    • @meteorcube
      @meteorcube 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another question about the crossover exercise work: upper body facing front not facing into a circle? Right?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thr crossover walk exercise can be practiced either way, facing front or facing in towards the direction you are traveling.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The crossover walk can be practiced either flat edges or leaning in to the inside edges. I don’t usually worry about edges with this particular exercise, but it is great if you want to take it a step further and use the inside edges.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hopefully rinks open soon and we can all practice again.

    Yeahhhh both directions xD When i was younger and took classes i assume i could do both ways. But the rink i went to for open practice was pretty strict on flow of skating so i only ever practiced one side and nooooowwww i cant cross over the other way >.> I just thought i could hide it by playing goalie but now that i want to figure skate i think i have some work to do
