For any new sport I tried, I'd tell myself to "accept the fact that you WILL fall". Basically getting rid of the fear that you MAY fall, and just basically make yourself fall and practice falling first 😉 once that fear is out of the way, it won't hold you back!
39 years old started ice skating again 4 months ago (ice skated twice around 13 years old) roller skated about 100 times as a kid...I'm getting much more comfy on ice with K2 ice skates...my forward crossovers are pretty decent backwards I can crossover in 1 direction the opposite is a total no go...I get my ice skate off the ice now quite a bit on crossovers which I couldn't do at all 3-4 sessions ago
I'm 20 and this gives me hope I'm a good skater but I skate like a freaking hockey player and want to be poise and learn new skills. Gonna try try go the rink alone a few times a week for peace of mind and maybe try new things! Thanks for this!
Yesterday I managed to do wiggles for the first time, and I was so happy about it because the previous time that I tried it I was stuck on the same spot and couldn't even get myself moving. Can't thank you enough for your videos coach!
Hi Coach Julia. Thank you for your wonderful videos.... They're SO helpful. I re-started ice skating as an adult (I'm 54 and re-started about a year ago; used to skate a bit as a kid). I live in South Africa and so we only have indoor rinks. But the new hobby is just WONDERFUL! I have become very comfortable skating forwards and gliding across the ice. I've noticed that warming up is so important. But even though I'm ABLE to skate backwards, I'm so much less confident doing so. I can actually skate backwards in that "stepping" way where I'm able to life my foot off the ice and replace it. The main issue and the thing I've love some help with is: When I'm skating backwards, I feel much, MUCH less balanced (compared to when I'm skating forward). It always feel like I might either fall forwards or backwards. Might you be able to guess this could be due to and how I can fix it? I'd be so grateful for your help.
You're a great coach. I've recently started ice skating again after 26 years and your videos have really helped improve my form and confidence on the ice. Thank you.x
The first time i went to a skating rink I was able to skate without prior knowledge like it was in my nature, but i was so scared to attempt to skate backwards. This would be a great help to start skating backwards 😊
Thank you so much! I've only been a casual skater in my life, but now have a rink right by me and have been loving using your videos to progress skills. I appreciate the progression each skills is shown in. Thank you for making me a better/more comfortable skater!
Hi there, I am a newbie skater as well - skating on and off for a year but only recently started classes- and I have to say, backwards one-foot glides are hell hahaha
You're a great teacher! I'm glad I discovered your channel and will be back for more! I'm 52 and always skated since being a kid, but never had any proper lessons (self taught). Every year my husband builds me a backyard skating rink, so I'm going to watch a daily video of yours to help me practice. Yay! Thanks so much lovely lady! ⛸🤍⛸
THANK YOU! I've gotten so confidant with recreational skating that I can keep up with those tiny hockey kids that zoom around the ice... but every time I watch a backwards lesson, I'd get totally stuck. The detail you made about form, and skating on the front curve of your blades? THAT was my issue! Good teachers don't make assumptions that beginners know those implicit/subconscious things.
My 8 year old grand daughter really likes your videos. They are easy to understand and unlike when her lesson is over, she can watch them at any time. Thanks for keeping it simple yet informative for a young skater. You are great at what you do. Keep up the good work. Thank-you.
i did learn how to skate classes but could never get backwards wiggles down. your video definitely explained what i was doing wrong and i hope i can get it down the next time i get to be on the ice!
I roller skate (quad skates), and i watched a lot of videos about backward skating, and i just cant get it; but i tried all the things you teach in this video and it works, thank you so much! ❤
I’m not sure why this showed up on my timeline. I’ve figured skated for 22 years. But this is great content and I’ll watch even if I don’t need the instruction lol
I absolutely fell in love with your videos. You explain everything so clearly and show each technique in different angles. I'm about to turn 30 in a few months and I found out how fun ice skating can be. I used to surf every weekend back home in Puerto Rico, so moving to a cold state where surfing is not pleasant anymore, I was worried I wouldn't find a sport that brought me the same joy. Turns out skating gives me a similar feeling like flying over the water! I've already looked up classes in a nearby rink, and have been watching your videos every day! Again, thank you so much for your effort and time to make these amazing tutorials for us!
Thank you so much! You are a great teacher! I have wanted to skate so much since a was around 11 years, but never had the opportunity. I am now a pensioner and since watching your video. And ven if I still can't, just watching your videos are beautiful. I can skate with you. Thank you!!.
I'm 18 and started learning to figure skate towards the end of last year, this video was super helpful as I am stuck in level one and have been worried about how to progress further when I'm struggling with basic lemons but this helped me understand better, thank you!
Some of the best skating tutorials on youtube. Ive been rewatching this video everytime i go out for a session, im hoping to at least begin doing backwards crossovers before the end of this season.
Im so glad I found your channel!! I started skating back in July at age 32 and haven't fully mastered some of these basic skills yet. Looking forward to getting in some practice and using your tips!! Thank you!!
First time going backwards today.. I did backward swizzles, I was a little scared at first, but I improved really quickly! Thank you so much for all of these videos.. its a big help.. you're my coach! Greetings from The Netherlands :D

Thank you so much for your videos, I'm taking lessons but your videos help me refresh my memory when I'm practising on my own and give me extra exercises to try and improve my technique. You explain things so clearly.
Today I went ice skating for the first time in nearly 20 years and really, really enjoyed it! I would definitely like to get back into the habit of skating on a semi-regular basis (even though the closest rink is over an hours drive away 😭), and your videos are super helpful! Thank you so much 😊
Perfect... been looking for off ice skating...but your techniques make more sense. I just wanna perfect backward crossovers... so will focus on my 1 leg ups and lemon strengths so I can gain the confidence... wootwoot.. happy skating
Thanks coach for this helpful work teaching many of us. As a father of two following into my steps, I find your tutorials such a strong tool in guiding me to guide my little ones. Be blessed ❤

A good one that my coach taught me is to do a backward bubble, and half way lift your foot up and place it back beside your other foot. This creates momentum and it’s really useful!
@@kourtnie1 yup, its where you make a circle/bubble shape in the ice going backwards/forwards. You bend your knees and turn your feet both about 45 degrees away from eachother, like first position in highland dancing if you know what that is. I'm so glad I found you! :DDD You are the best coach I found on youtube so far! I'm currently training my forward crossovers, and you have taught me so much! Thank you!!!
I am getting much more confident skating forwards I'm ready to try backwards I think I'll watch this video just before I go on the ice again .thank you!!
Another great video, Julia. Thanks. Could you do some intermediate backward skating drills to practice? The gap between the stuff in this video and backward crossovers feels huge.
i've tried sm times but its so hard to practice when the only skating rink in your country is super crowded! im getting close but i think i can do it!!!
I hope this tutorial will help me the next time I'm gonna skate. I've tried some backwards wiggles and swizzles before but I never had any momentum and would just not move at all
Great coaching, clear, step by step, easy to progress! If I can give people one advice: record yourself (if possible). Seeing yourself skating the way you see other people is the best way to fix your mistakes! 💪
Your tutorials have helped me so much! You are very sweet. I am trying to learn backwards one-foot glides and I am wobbly like a balloon :') I skate, bring my feet parallel, bend my knees, and slowly bring one foot up - but then I lean to one side, even if I engage my core. Guess I need to squeeze more! I find it very hard to position my weight correctly in my boot, I end up way too in front. Also, in the backwards slalom, I find it very hard to lean to the outside edge - I distribute my weight in the opposite way, always putting weight on the wrong foot... Any tips for that? :') My coach went nuts today hahaha
Thank you so much for this video!!! I've been struggling with backward wiggles for 5 weeks now!!! My current instructors are college students at a college rink and I'm in a basic one group (mostly small children haha) everything has been very easy for me, but the backward wiggles are my enemy. One of the instructors told me I should slightly lean forward while moving back in forth to do them, and obviously, my toe pick got the best of me. I did actually end up learning how to do backward wiggles.. forward? Although I'm sure it has an actual name, that's what we'll call it for now. Thank you so much for this video!
Hi Coach Julia, I was wondering, how can I correct my ankles if I'm turning back around in a circle instead of travelling in a straight line in a one-foot back glide? Much love, your videos are the best complement to my skating journey 😊
You are concentrating your weight on one edge of the blade. When doing any one foot glide you need to skate flat on the blade with your weight equal on both edges. Since you are skating on one edge, concentrate on putting weight on the other edge and you will improve.
I would love to do figure skating, been something i really want to do but unfortunately i live in a dead town where the ice rinks are only open to the piblic pretty rarly and i keept missing the dates they are.
Thank you for your tutorials I’ve been skating for almost two month and been making awesome progress without them I’d be still looking like a new born deer on the ice
Thank you for all the explanations of weight distribution and proper alignment- this video is so helpfful! I noticed my toes clenching and digging into the sole of the shoe particularly in backwards swizzles. Is that bad? I think it tires out my feet easily.
Its been forever since I skated on actual ice. Ive missed it a lot and have always been looking forward to getting back on ice. I used to go skating with my school during winters back in Norway, but now Im living in southeast asia, and its almost always humid here. Recently just found out about a rink being opened, so if I ever manage to go there, Ill be putting my rusty skills to use!
I am new to your channel and love your tutorials. I learned to skate years ago and the teacher we had never explained things like this. I haven't been on the ice for a while but would love to go again.
Hey, thanks for the advice! Im starting my skating lessons next Saturday. Although my feet aren't really straight and when I use my right leg to skate, I almost fall .
I’m 22. I can skate forwards but whenever I try to go backwards I just CANT move. I want to learn how to skate backwards without having to push myself away from the wall or doing lemons. I want to skate backwards like how I skate forwards. Ty for this I can’t wait to try again today :)
Thank you! I just learned the back swizzle, but cannot create a chain yet xD But i am suffering with backward 1/2 swizzle on circle with my non-dominant leg
When the backward skating is being done are your feet meant to be in a V position or straight? Coach Julia is fantastic and explains so very nicely. When purchasing inline skates do we have to also purchase a helmet, elbow and knee pads? Thank you
the perfect tutorials for skaters that can't get lessons - thank you so much!
Thanks so much for the positive feedback!

@Hayes Westin NO ONE DO THIS ITS SCAM
I was determined to learn some lessons and marched to the rink only to find me.... being a chicken lol
Oh no! you’ve got to try it again and be brave!
For me, I honestly just needed someone to force me out there. Getting out of the comfort zone is hard, I understand 😅
Tell yourself I am going to go around the rink at least once.
How is it now? Any progress?

Thank you for your tutorials I’ve been skating for almost two month and been making awesome progress without them I’d be still looking like a new born deer on the ice
super cool its all about the basics ! you are a wonderful detailed teacher , Thank you!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for your explanation clear🙏🥰
Thank you. Ice skating is super gnar. It's really hard. This video is a real help.
6:22 LMAOOO ARE THEY OK?
XD
Hah! She is fine, just making a dramatic entrance. 😆
LMaO i came because I’m skating tommorrow and it’s been years and I’m just dying lol , thank u
Thank you for all the explanations of weight distribution and proper alignment- this video is so helpfful! I noticed my toes clenching and digging into the sole of the shoe particularly in backwards swizzles. Is that bad? I think it tires out my feet easily.
I came here for a skate lesson and fell in love 😍
Awe, thanks! Welcome to my channel!
Oh my gosh, how awesome that there is a new rink opening! I hope you can make it out there!
@@CoachJulia Thank you, I will go when all the things with covid is over
Great video! Wish I'd watched this a few days ago. Next time at the rink I'll give this a try. Thank you!
You can do it!

Excellent tutorial, thanks Coach Julia!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am new to your channel and love your tutorials. I learned to skate years ago and the teacher we had never explained things like this. I haven't been on the ice for a while but would love to go again.
I hope you get to skate again!
I love you woman. I take classes but I always look at what you do
Awe, thanks so much.
Brilliant tutorial. How long do you think it takes to master skating backwards?
Hey, thanks for the advice! Im starting my skating lessons next Saturday. Although my feet aren't really straight and when I use my right leg to skate, I almost fall .
Wonderful teacher!😊
Thank you! 😃
I’m 22. I can skate forwards but whenever I try to go backwards I just CANT move. I want to learn how to skate backwards without having to push myself away from the wall or doing lemons. I want to skate backwards like how I skate forwards. Ty for this I can’t wait to try again today :)
Thank you so much for your detailed lesson ! I will be practicing like mad …thank you thank you 😍👏👏👏👏
You can do it!
Instructions start at 01:34
Thank you for your lessons, hugely helpful and appreciated
Glad it was helpful!
you're an awesome coach. thank you
I appreciate that!
Thank you! I just learned the back swizzle, but cannot create a chain yet xD But i am suffering with backward 1/2 swizzle on circle with my non-dominant leg
I'm trying it this morning
I can't get lessons but I will be getting inline figure skates this summer so I think your videos will be helpful
She made it so easy!!!
When the backward skating is being done are your feet meant to be in a V position or straight?
Coach Julia is fantastic and explains so very nicely.
When purchasing inline skates do we have to also purchase a helmet, elbow and knee pads?
Thank you
