      That was always the stated goal though. Through multiple interviews and investor days Tesla has stated they are trying to lower the price and sell at higher volume. The battery cost projection chart shows this. Early adopters before 2023 shouldnt have been surprised.

      I think he's selling now so he will avoid that problem....but he's not the only one thinking about battery life. Anyone thinking of buying a used battery operated car will also be considering potential battery failure.

      My volt has 73,000 miles is 7 years old and the battery charges about %90 to what it was new. New it was 55miles and is about 47 miles now, but will still do 52 on non free way driving, until the gas engine engages.

    Only thing you forgot to add on your math is the price of the car. You spent $50k on a car, meaning you would have to drive 5-6 times (over 200k, based on your gas saving calculations) miles for you to have any kind of return in investment. Meaning you would have saved way more money if you kept your old cadillac.

      his calculations are off. He is comparing with gas guzzlers who get under 20 mpg. If he were to compare with a hybrid CR-V or rav 4 it would have been way worse

      @@crimsonlightbinderyeah i gave him the benefit of the doubt. It should have been compared to average vehicle with 30+ mpg and average nation wide electricity cost which is about 23 cent/kw. But even with his calculation, if you buy a new vehicle you are automatically losing your money. So many people trade their vehicle for an electric car for the idea of saving money and 90% of the time they are not.

      @@SemiDad Doesn't matter if the Cadillac was free. The comparison begins at a certain point in time when the Cadillac is already old. So the 2 options are to keep that old thing going which is very easy since they're super reliable. The other option is to buy a brand new monstrosity with over half a ton of lithium cells. So he's gotta save that money spent on the new car since he had the option of keeping something old that would've done the exact same job albeit at a higher running cost for the fuel. It's also far better for the environment to reuse something old than to build something new. Especially when that something new requires half a ton of lithium cells. The amount of mining required for that battery pack alone is in the order of 1 million pounds of raw material. So try to offset that with the gasoline you no longer burn with an EV. Most likely your electricity comes from polluting sources anyway and it very inefficiently gets into your car through hundreds of miles of wiring.

I've owned a MSP for two years. Zero range anxiety, Chargers always work,20 min charging time, My insurance went down from my previous car , battery is under warranty for 8 years. When seeking input about EV's talk to people that have actually owned them.

      People who don’t own an EV always say things like this even though they have never experienced it. I have owned an ev for 3 years now, best vehicle I have owned. I would never own an ev only, but as a second vehicle its great.

      That is a good one but in all seriousness he should cut his losses and sell ASAP. It's very easy to get a minor dent in the battery and then it's junk yard time.
      Since the battery is the whole underside of the vehicle you'll have to be very careful and baby it like a cheap plastic toy.

      EV insurance has also skyrocketed in the UK because many insurance companies are refusing to insure them. The average is about a four fold increase. A man insuring a model Y for £1200 a year was recently quoted over £5000.
      My ICE insurance in the US went up about $200 this year with no claims, accidents or tickets.

      Its not hard...I have had my new Tesla Model Y for two months and have over 4k miles and never went below 40% and only charge to 80%. The range has been perfect for me and I haven't charge anywhere but home yet.

      I have driven my electric car for 6 years and 65k miles and have charged at public chargers for probably less than 2% of the time. I do only have a 120 mile range car, but I drive it every day starting with 120+ miles of range. Not really practical for long range trips, but is perfect the other 350 days a year.

      I’d like to know what part of the country he lives where electricity is only .08 per KW. Most areas of the US pay between .30-.40 per KW for residential electricity. Electricity is .10 per KW where I live and that is considered cheap.

    Used Mach-e is getting cheap enough to become affordable. If a buyer can find one for 25K in a few months, then the partial tax credit still applies. Total price ends up in the low 20's. Not bad.

    I bought a used 2015 Nissan Leaf in 2018 for $12,500 and I'm still using it today. The only things I had to change were the tires, auxiliary battery and the rear hatch gas shocks...that's pretty much it. I'm almost at 70K. I drive it around town...all day...everyday...great car ;-)

      I live in Massachusetts, my non national grid rate with a lower third party is 15cents per kwh but with added carrying costs closer to 38 cents per kwh. That's charging at home. If I didn't have a third party over 46 cents per kwh. Your 8cents per kwh does it include all charges. Even with gas at 3.37 cheaper to run my hybrid on gas than electric. In mass. My winters can be as low as -10. Every one I know with an EV tells me they loose range in this weather. I have talked and heard from people who have Ford lightning throw a ranch in the bed and loose miles. How about comparing mileage to s Ubuntu crosstrek or Honda that get 35 plus miles per gallon. Selective kwh rate without added charges and comparing to a low mileage vehicle gives a positive to a potential negative.

      ​@@ronorazine9105Why is your electricity so expensive? In WI I'd pay 13.6 cents per kwh with the standard rates. If I opted for special EV charging rates, it'd be an extra $8/month and 6.2 cents for off-peak charging, assuming I paid for the charger installation out of pocket.
      Some quick math suggests that monthly charging costs would be $31 or $51 for an average 15k mile per year driver at 3.33 miles per kwh.
      In contrast, at 35mpg and $3.37 per gallon, it'd be $120 per month for an average 15k mile driver with gas.

I don't get that you have a hybrid but have to rely on others to tell you they lose range in winter. I also don't understand lightning drivers contacting you with hauling stories. Why would he compare his MachE to vehicles that's not in the class of his vehicle? You have 2 choices in 35mpg 2023 cars, entry level like the Honda civic, the Kia Forte and the Toyota Corolla or you have everything else that is the same or more costly than the MachE but those vehicles are of the same fit, finish, and quality where the entry levels are not. My 68' Bug regardless of gas mileage is not a comparison to a Mercedes, BMW, or Lexus.

    Local Ford dealer lists 179 Mustang Mach-E in their inventory. One is a 2023 GT MSRP of $73,630, advertised price (dealer discount) of $65,130. One is a 2023 Select MSRP of $45,295, advertised price (dealer discount) of $44,795.
    Of course these prices exclude all those fake dealer fees including, for this dealer, a $500 fake doc fee.
    With 179 vehicles in inventory, it is likely this dealer will need to be a bit more willing to lower their prices.

    the issue with the value is no one is buying them from carvana. the market has dried up. What you have to look forward to: Federal Road Tax by the mile--which will adjust based on which whacko needs to fund some green project. 2) Sky high insurance. Look for your insurance to triple.

Some of the other companies are rating it even higher..... Here in the rust belt, most people don't even come close to these numbers, so the battery should outlast the actual vehicle.

      @@cobracarlos I'm pretty surprised about. I know one of the problems with Teslas is that a lot of people punch it so they scrub off a lot of tire by launching off the line all the time. I live in an area with dozens and dozens of sharp turns and that alone eats tires up.

    When did you buy in 2021? The over MSRP madness didn’t really start until late late late 2021 mostly into 2022 when the GT’s came out. I bought mine in July 2021 and I paid under MSRP white premium extended with the glass roof.

    Is the insurance cheaper for the Mach-E? I was looking at Tesla's Model S and in California the insurance 2.5 times higher than my Passat TDI. I assumed it was because they are not easy to get collision repair.

    In California, I was paying .17/KWH in 2008.

      Back in what day? I've owned 20 cars over the years and was in the car business for a time. The average time someone owns a car is about 6-8 years. They are typically sold before breakdowns to recoup some of the cost. Your foolish method might only apply to a very small amount of people. You keep cars 20-25 years? Good for you. Most don't.

      I own a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche. I am the second owner and it had 20k miles when I got it. Planned on driving it until it cost me more to drive than it is worth. It now has 214 k miles and I spend $700+ a month on gas with my commute and using it for work. Oil changes, brakes and all I am looking forward ro my new EV. My reservation is on the Aptera. Love it or hate it, it only needs a regular plug to charge, I give my excess home solar power to my electric company to cash in for a ton of money, and the Aptera has solar charging already. I will save a boatload because it is not subject to the taxes of other EVs due to it being an autocycle.       @redbaron6805 Go to any car appraisal site and if you punch in an imaginary 18 month old EV6 you'll see that it's worth about 26k when the MSRP was 52k. That's 50 percent in HALF of 3 years. Yes I should have leased it and made Kia EAT that false residual of 55%. I don't even know how to go about predicting its further loss of value after another 1.5 years.

    Electric versus ICE depends on personal situation. I am 74 years old and have 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe and 2023 VW Golf R. Both 6 speed manuals that provide interaction with the cars that electrics do not have. Depends on what one wants from a car. I do not drive that much miles/year since am retired. I will probably die with these two cars outliving me. If I were younger and working and commuting could consider EV car. Everyone's situation is unique.

      @@ronblack7870 If you plan on keeping that car, try to do at least an oil change every quarter. Oil does break down in time, it is the additive package that is the issue. Depending on the transmission, if a CVT, a transmission fluid change would be a very good idea.

    Buying an EV is undoubtedly a good decision for some, yourself incuded, but definitely not all. Once you have to use public chargers to continue your journey then things change drastically. Eg here in the UK a race was held between a BMW 320D and Porsche Taycan. The Taycan really struggled with charging and barely made it and it took a lot longer, the diesel just sailed it. Cost wise, the diesel cost £117 to do John O'Groats to Lands end (the length of the country) and the Taycan cost £262. Plus the Taycan cost £120,000 new and is now valued (bottom trade) at £42,000.

    With my 4-cyl 2019 Camry SE, I get 400+ miles with City Driving and 600+ miles Highway Driving (with cruise control). When I fill up? It takes 5 minutes tops and I'm on my way with another 400+/600+ miles available. Sure, I have to pay for gas and maintenance. Some of the latter I can do on my own. Most of the costs of regular maintenance is labor. Plus, the car cost me $27k even out the door (plus 2 years free maintenance). I'll stick with my Camry for another 10-15 years. I might consider a new Camry (hybrid-only from 2025 onward) when that time comes. My insurance is also around $1400/year (for 3 cars) full coverage with my safe driving and clean record (plus 12k miles or less a year). Personally, I think that's a bit high. But, oh well.

I doubt it and even if it does, it’s gonna hold a fraction of the charge it used to.

    I seriously doubt you only pay eight cent per KWh. Eight cents might be what your electric co charges per KWh, but you need to take into account all the fees and taxes. So, take your TOTAL electric bill and divide by the number of KWhs you used and it will probably be in the 18 cents/KWh range. Also, don't forget to add the power from the chargers when/if you took a road trip. BTW, that Caddy gets 25 MPG on the Highway and 18 in city (I know...I have one).

      So, using his numbers 17mpg for the Cadillac @ $4 per gallon and 240 miles per full charge @ 8 cents per kW he calculated 1/10th of the cost $900 vs. $9k, for 42k miles. Using your new numbers, 21.25 mpg combined @$4 per gal. is 0.8 of the cost $7,200. And 18 cents is 2.25 more than 8 cents so the new cost is $2k. The new difference in cost is $5,200 for 42k miles driven. So a little ove 1/4 or 28% of the cost.
      Take into account the inconvenience of long charging wait of EV, less range, battery replacement after so many years… electric still only make sense for short city trips.

      I am paying just a bit over ten cents per kWh all in with monthly meter charges etc. My in-laws all in are around the eight cents range all in as well. There is cheap power out there at least in some areas at least. Its the the CA fees! 😁👍

      You are very lucky. My KWHs fee goes from $140 in KWHs used (1353 kWhs) to $225 final bill due to all the fees and taxes (in Arizona). When buying a car, I consider convenience and cost. If I can buy a comfortable Cadillac DTS for $7800, (or the one you had mentioned for $25K) I could buy a lot of fuel for the additional $25,000 that a $50K EV would cost me. I have had expensive cars in the past that depreciate fast so I am done wasting money on cars. @@Chris_In_Texas

      The problem is that WE are paying for a large portion of his car which is illegal. HE is limiting OUR grid capacity, getting tax rebates we CANNOT get, EVERY ICE CAR is paying a CARBON TAX KICKBACK to MUSK! WHY ARE WE PAYING A TAX TO A PRIVATE CITIZEN???? THAT is why Musk willnot do a hybrid, cause then he loses his carbon tax kick back scam. When this guy gets new service to his house does HE pay the $250,000 to have new lines and transformers run down the street? No WE DO. This guy could not afford his leaf if WE didnt kick in his ownership costs and grid costs. Its a scam but the politicians are making a fortune off their stock ownership and we are just pawns.

    Gas savings exist only if you can charge in your own garage. If you live in an apartment or condo, you're screwed. You won't be saving anything on gas.

    Back in 2020, when these things started to show up at the dealerships, I happened to be at my local Ford dealer getting my Mustang GT serviced. A mechanic told me that they couldn't get the doors to open on them!

    Excellent video. I do think electric cars are the way to go if you can charge at home. Can I ask where you live? 8 cents per KW is insanity cheap. Here in Las Vegas my electric rate went up 60% last year to 16 cents per KW.

      Even with electricity produced from coal, an EV emits less CO2 than an ICE car, not to mention all the air pollution. Not to mention coal is less than 22% of the electricity production in the USA, and decreasing. And of course you can chose to use 100% renewable electricity, while you cannot buy clean gas. Regarding "child labor", it is only for cobalt, and the oil industry use far more cobalt (in refineries) than the battery industry. And new EVs have LFP batteries, without cobalt. So are your going to switch from ICE to EV to save some children in Africa ? Or was it just stupid arguments because change is too difficult for you, even to save you own children from the consequences of climate warming ?

    how many sets of tires have you bought? how much is your insurance for it? How old is the HV battery? Electric vehicles should depreciate faster then ICE cars because the battery loses capacity on every charge!

    Have had mine model y for 3 years. 76k miles later the savings are ridiculous indeed. Racking up the miles so far. I have solar so go figure. Works out great for me. Saved ~12-15 k over three years. The issue with us is we have somewhere to charge at night.

    Too many downsides to these things, unless you only go as far as the neighborhood grocery store and have a CEV for longer journeys and or emergencies. My in-laws went all electric, and when their daughter had a brain aneurism 250 miles away, they discovered that their Ford Lightning would not make the journey without stopping for hours to charge and or even find a charging station in Northern Michigan. Talk about anxiety!
    Even for myself, to own one of these EV's, I would have to upgrade the electrical panel in my house to either 200 amp, or better, 300 amp. That right there to have an electrician do that, is somewhere between $6000 and $15,000 depending on the contractor you talk to. Then the charger, another what, $3000+? I see no benefit to these things, no upside in any way. And then all of the other issues, like towing, where to park in regards to fire, the fact that even a fender bender can be a burden in regards to repairs, etc... I will keep my CEV.

      You don’t need to charge your car to full every night. Just like you don’t fill up the gas tank every day. I have had a Volvo C40 Recharge for the past couple of years and haven’t needed a Level 2 charger at home, except once in an emergency. I just plug into a 110 outlet and trickle charge it and only need to do that overnight about once or twice a week. For an emergency, the car comes with the L2 cable, and you can literally plug it into your dryer’s outlet, if it is nearby. Some people just do that all the time and buy a switch to toggle between the car charging and the dryer. My electric bill has not gone up at all in the past two years of charging on a 110 outlet. Not even a single dollar! That surprised me, but it doesn’t really cost more than any other trickle charge on a regular outlet, like your phone and laptop. So far I’ve gone on a roadtrip once, and used my free rapid charging miles from Volvo for the trip. Often times also the machines will let you charge and then announce that your charge was gifted for free. I have also spent zero dollars on maintenance. It is a ease though and soon I have to decide what to get next. The range on the C40 is terrible at 225 miles, which you can increase to about 240 on roadtrips by charging to 100% instead of the usual 90%.

    This is what I was afraid of. $7,500 tax credit, but compared to buying a gas car, your EV depreciation cost is 5-10 times higher than any savings from using electricity and the credit in aggregate. For example $48,700 MSRP - $7,500 = $41,000 but it depreciates $20,000. If you bought a regular Mustang for $48,000 (no credit) you'd still have a $35,000 car :) Everyone got scammed.

    Is it worth driving an EV rather than a gas car? Maybe the biggest question is "what's your time worth?" You are trying to sell your car and trying to tell others how good it is...but you are selling. Are you buying another EV?

      it is much more expensive for EV because they are seen as a luxury honestly I know it is a bit more expensive but when I do get a car it will be a Plug In Hybrid.
