Hello Matt, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I get such a kick out of you! I didn't have a nice piece of plywood so I used a piece of "oriented strand" board. It wasn't as smooth as plywood so I used a double layer of batting and it worked out just fine. I love this ironing board!! Thank you. Say "Hi" to Donna and all the people who make everything at Jordan Fabrics possible. Jen in NY

I did that and added a heat resistant layer, 1/2 " twill tape for handles on all 4 sides and to trim the edges on the wood side. Worked great. So, the layering was wood, batting heat fabric then a heavy cotton fabric with the trim and 4 handles.

Clever. How did you attach the handles?

I was just at a Habitat for Humanity, Restore, looking for door, actually. They have a corner for odd shelf boards, cabinet doors , countertops. Grabbed a piece of plywood, 40X40 , with a Formica finish on top side. Perfect ! ! $1, seriously, $1 LOVE that store! Anyway, with a $1 king sheet from thrift store, folded couple times for thickness, and grandson with staple gun, I have a perfect ironing surface.

I like to use 100% cotton ticking with the stripes, it just gives me something to help line up seams. Plus it is so tightly wove it's easy to pull taught when stretching it over the absorbent low loft padding.

    • @miric6224
      @miric6224 ปีที่แล้ว

Nice idea for using stripes. Ticking has good body and is wide! Thanks

Yes, I have ordered product from Fire MT Gems. Seems like Grants Pass, OR is a magnet for burgeoning entrepreneurs and/or couples who have vision! Congratulations to both companies.
What I appreciate is that both couples followed their *bliss* , listened to each other, nurtured each other's skills and talents--and, made these phenomenal companies as a result!

I made one of these years ago to put on top of my regular ironing board so I had a bigger, more square ironing surface. I put 1x1 stops on the underside at the front, back and sides of the board so it wouldn't slide off my ironing board. If I needed my regular iron board I would just lift off the big one I made and replace it when I was done. All quilters need this big board.

These are great table top boards. My husband has made several long ones for me (and friends). We all love ours. I have him make them 22"wide x 60" long. I use Warm n Natural batting. I don't want any polyester in it because it melts. We usually set these long ones on top of our regular ironing boards and sometimes add stays to the underneath side to keep them from sliding off the ironing board. Thanks for the video.

I've watched this video several times, searched high and low until I found the perfect fabric, and added Bo-Nash Ironslide 2000 tabletop cover, 29 x 65in, on top of the two layers of batting. It's so beautiful and the perfect addition to my new quilt studio! Thank you, thank you! I love all of your videos! I wish I could have attached my pic!

I made one of these ironing boards-great video! I don't have space for a big table, so I am using a Home Depot island that is perfect for my first-class ironing station. I couldn't find 54" fabric that I liked, so I used 108" backing fabric. Having this big an ironing surface is a game changer! Thanks Matt!!!

I just made my ironing surface 2 days ago and WOW it was easy! Instead of cutting the corners out, I mitered them. The BEST part was using my husband's staple gun that works on the compressor! I wanted to add staples to EVERYTHING I saw, but the gun ran out of staples. Since my husband was in the house and I was in my sewing room in the barn, I decided I had enough staples in my board. I love this board. Thanks to Matt, I'm now able to build things!

I made a small version that I can tuck under my sewing/craft table. I had too many kitchen cutting boards! I took the thickest, about 1/2", added a double layer of batting from a mattress pad, bound a layer of fabric, attached Velcro strips to the sides to pull taught on the board. I wanted removable and washable. All items were on hand. It even has a handle in the board design.

My husband also made a rectangle ironing board to put over my regular board and used cleets to keep it from moving around. I did however use a wool batting. Since our small wool ironing pads keep heat I thought the wool batting would also. I also used the silver ironing fabric. I know its boring but it works.

I add a layer of heavy duty aluminum foil between the wood and the batting. it heats up as you press, and gives you heat from both sides.

    • @nutsandboltsfabric

It also keeps the moisture from being absorbed by the wood. Thus, not warping the plywood.

I don't think I want that for my board. I work in a very, very tight space that doubles as a place for me to press, and then cut with a mat on top. At times, I have to wait until the board cools down, because when I put my Olfa mat on top, it sweats and gets damp. I have a little fan that I point down on it to hasten cooling of the surface when I am pressing, cutting.

good job there Matt. What ya going to do recover your old one for the new shop? I suppose there will be more than one station. Make a smaller one for Donna to place closer to her machine, hint hint Love watching you both.

Lowe's cut my plywood for me and my sweet daughter-in-love came over and helped me staple the fabric and batting to the board. Oh my what a difference it has made. I have it on a table next to me. Now I can sew and turn to my pad for ironing. Thank you so much for the idea.
