Hello Matt, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I get such a kick out of you! I didn't have a nice piece of plywood so I used a piece of "oriented strand" board. It wasn't as smooth as plywood so I used a double layer of batting and it worked out just fine. I love this ironing board!! Thank you. I like to use 100% cotton ticking with the stripes, it just gives me something to help line up seams. Plus it is so tightly wove it's easy to pull taught when stretching it over the absorbent low loft padding.

Nice idea for using stripes. Ticking has good body and is wide! Thanks

I made this. It was quick and easy. Makes ironing soo much easier. I drew a line on it with a straight edge so I can iron my blocks straight.

Great idea adding a straight edge. I wonder if adding one perpendicular line intersecting with the straight edge would be of benefit.

I made one also with a scrap from a cabinet shop and a canvas fabric top, mine looks awful too. It's been so long I don't remember how many layers of batting I used but my sides are not wearing. I used some insul bright, which after watching your video must not have been needed. I do like the pretty fabric and like watching you work because you do it right. Thank you.

I like your pressing table. I did something different. I used a hollow inside door, drilled random holes on the bottom side to help prevent warping. I used a heavy canvas to cover the upholstery batting. We built a shelving unit underneath. I have had it since 2009 and still love it.

Is it possible to do videos on things other than quilts and table runners eg.bags and such. I find your attention to detail has helped me tremendously. Like finger pressing everything I do now. We received the fabric I ordered from Jordan Fabrics in the mail late today and it is a heavier fabric as Matt described. My husband made my iron board this evening. It turned out really well. I am very pleased with it. I would post a pic to Instagram if I knew how. I have a photo of it on my iPhone but am at a loss as to how to get it to the Jordan Fabrics Instagram feed, or mine for that matter. I am very pleased with the outcome and I look forward to putting it to good use. Thank you, Matt, for the great instructional video. Couldn't have done it without you.

But had no idea you made a video until i heard Donna say this is a "special fabric" on this ironing board my husband made me. After she said that i started to focus even more on the fabric. Loved you video but I wouldn't use 80/20 batting. I'm also a firefighter and hot ironing boards and polyester isn't quit what I had in mind. When the iron/irons are really hot that wood will hold the heat especially since your board is on a counter and not on an ironing board or legs of some kind to get air underneath so it can cool.
I know a lot of people don't think about this and it's why they are changing pads more often.
I was hoping you were making the board that goes onto the iron board.
I have the dimensions of the board and what I need. But I thought I was going to see how it's put together. lol o-well
I'm going to use the Insul-bright Fabric (not insul-bright batting) and add 100% cotton batting and my decorative fabric on top. Used that before on a regular ironing board and it works great.
    Thanks for your video
    Have a Bless Day

    • @deborahcleaveland3188
      @deborahcleaveland3188 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Several months ago I made a iron caddy using Debbie Shore's youtube video. She did not use the Insul-bright Fabric, but I opted to use it. I was still very disappointed. The heat and moisture went through all three layers of batting and the Insul-bright fabric. I won't try that again. Just didn't work. I do think having the birch wood board will and should make a significant difference in my ironing experience. I do wish I had used 100% cotton instead of 80/20. But I still expect to get lots of use and enjoyment out of mine.

Did you specify what kind of batting you used? Polyester batting will probably melt so I am guessing you used cotton or wool batting to stand to iron heat. I'll bet you can cut some smaller tailor shapes out of the wood, too for clothing such as a sleeve board with legs. Thanks Matt

I would love to have the space for one this large, but i do want to make one that is smaller that will fit my area. What I am wondering is why I should or shouldn't place some sort of vapor barrier between the batting and the wood? Wouldn't steaming things tend to do something to the wood?

( i do realie the size cn be adjusted to need, don't get me wrong). and for some one who may never say use something like ... say some startch... i don't want to have to have 2 of them sitting around so that i can switch them out all the time. not to mention it will get expensive as the sstartch build up would be gross and ubsanitary after a short amount of time. whynot just make a snug fitting pillow top like thing to go around it? something that can be taken off and washed every so often as the need arises. lie when one of my gannies come running in with their juice cups and spills something on it. lol

Good tutorial! Are you concerned about the fabric cover colors transferring onto your project fabric with all of the steam heat? Would you recommend washing the fabric first to prevent color transfer?
    Thanks!

We have not had any color transfer, and have made these many times in the past, but certainly washing the fabric first would be a good idea.

What made you want to open a fabric store? Whose idea and why? What part of the store is your favorite (for each of you?) Thank you in advance if you actually take the time to reply. 👍👍👍

We have been in the quilting and/or fabric business for a long time. The retail store has been open for about 2 years, but we have sold fabric and quilted items at shows and online for years. I love seeing all the projects that our customers bring in - it is quite inspiring. Matt likes picking out the fabric combinations that we cut into our kits.

Matt, your board is great. I am going to have some wood cut, get a stapler and make one. Thanks. KB -Nevada

I did that and added a heat resistant layer, 1/2 " twill tape for handles on all 4 sides and to trim the edges on the wood side. Worked great. So, the layering was wood, batting heat fabric then a heavy cotton fabric with the trim and 4 handles.

Clever. How did you attach the handles?

Thank you for the tutorial! I made mine today on the kitchen floor! Home Depot had precut 24 x 48". So that's what I used.

Great fabric choice. Easy to follow instructions. I learn so much from your videos. Who needs to attend those quilt retreats when we've got you!

Nancy Johnson have you ever actually attended a quilting retreat? I have and it's a great time to enjoy like minded people like yourself.

I was just at a Habitat for Humanity, Restore, looking for door, actually. They have a corner for odd shelf boards, cabinet doors , countertops. Grabbed a piece of plywood, 40X40 , with a Formica finish on top side. Perfect ! ! $1, seriously, $1 LOVE that store! Anyway, with a $1 king sheet from thrift store, folded couple times for thickness, and grandson with staple gun, I have a perfect ironing surface.

I made one of these years ago to put on top of my regular ironing board so I had a bigger, more square ironing surface. I put 1x1 stops on the underside at the front, back and sides of the board so it wouldn't slide off my ironing board. If I needed my regular iron board I would just lift off the big one I made and replace it when I was done. All quilters need this big board.

These are great table top boards. My husband has made several long ones for me (and friends). We all love ours. I have him make them 22"wide x 60" long. I use Warm n Natural batting. I don't want any polyester in it because it melts. We usually set these long ones on top of our regular ironing boards and sometimes add stays to the underneath side to keep them from sliding off the ironing board. Thanks for the video.
