    I have something kind of similar in that it's a wooden base with the layers on top. But mine is 60 inches by 20 inches and it's not attached to anything. I store it on top of my fabric cabinets, then just pull it down and set it on my table when I need it. I did it this way because although I have a dedicated room, it's also used for painting, clay work, wood engraving, etc. Basically if you name a craft, that's what the room is also used for. So I needed to be able to move it out of the way so it didn't get dirty with other things.

    Love how sleek and smart looking it turned out.. Being lazy (cough cough) i would just have repaired the small hole, then used a Darker canvas, but that's just me 😁 Every time i get my ironing board out, i turn my back for a FEW seconds, then Wham my cats are sprawled over it, new pattern needs cutting out.. poof my cats are there... "but mum we're your pattern weights".. stops for quick snuggle..

      I like the look of the unbleached canvas, and also, I found with my old lap board that if you use dyed fabric for the topper, it could potentially transfer the dye!

    I have a thrifted farm rectangle kitchen table. I bought a piece of 1/2 thick industrial wool felt. Covered that with old bed sheet. I can iron. Pin into the felt. Cannot use rotary cutters but for pattern work and ironing it is great. Wide enough for most fabrics. The wool felt idea came from Threads magazine.

    For those who don’t have enough space for a cutting table in their sewing space…I use bed risers to lift our dining room table up to counter height for cutting when I am working on cutting out patterns. I have a regular sized ironing board right beside my sewing machine that I use for pressing.
    I dream of having a sewing room that is big enough to have a table like yours. The way you have the top is very similar to the cutting/pressing tables we had at work when I worked in a drapery shop while in college.

    I had my table built by a carpenter. The total dimensions are 44”x74”. It has a 1“ wooden edge trim. The center is a shallow LED illuminated box with a translucent acrylic. I use it as a light box for crafts or it under light for tracing lines & darts off a pattern. It has drawers on either side of the length of the table. On one end there are shelves & the other end are the electric plug to the wall & the on/off switches. The whole thing is on wheels. I also have 2 large 3/4” thick felt pads for ironing on. Definitely worth the the money. I spend so much time at it planning, cutting, ironing, & other random things.

    This made me think of mattresses, and I had an idea for the batting or any layer, really: you could rotate it! If there's an edge that's unused or like-new you could totally rotate it 180 degrees (or flip it over, depending what layer I guess).
    Man, remember when you could flip mattresses over? lol

      @moniqueleigh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't want to admit I'm too old to floor troll, but my knees, hips, & back yell at me every time I try...... Currently, we don't have a dining room or any large table, so I'm currently doing more of the "bed-troll" thing with a large piece of plywood that gets tossed on the bed as I switch off between my back yelling at me while I bend over the bed or my knees yelling when I troll on the bed with the plywood across my lap (and my hips yelling throughout the entire process). Ironing is done bits at a time on the fold-down board and trying not to step on the bits I've already ironed. We are working towards getting in to a new place that will have a dedicated room just for my crafting (sewing & knitting mostly, with tatting & other things thrown in occasionally. My spouse's Cricut stuff will probably live in there, too.)

    • @daisukidatotoro

      @@moniqueleigh I understand. I wish you luck with a new place. I used to have a small sewing room, but turned it into a playroom when my little boy turned 1. Now I sew in the dining room, which is a large space, but pressing will always be problematic.

    I use my dinning room table for most of my cutting. It's just about waist height for my 5'1" and at 4' x 6' it holds most projects nicely. It does however not work for ironing, and my ironing board is crap. Currently planning to move in a couple months so I'm hoping I can get some sort of better ironing set up there.

    I have a extra wide ironing board on a adjustable stand. It is wide enough for the kids clothing i make for my kids. An most of the time it’s wide enough for the peaces of my one clothing. And a big rolup mat for the big peaces. And a big cutting mat for my rotary cutter. It all has a place in my sowing room/walkin closet room. And can be put up and taken down in minutes. And moved around if i want to sow anywhere else in the house.
    And the biggest pro for me is i can adjust my space for when i sit in my wheelchair, office chair ore standing up and waking, ore a combi.

    I don't have a designated space, but the built in buffet in the dining room is the perfect 'counter' height for cutting for quilts and fits a 18 inch wide rotary mat. When I am doing garment sewing, I cut out on the dining room table with one of those folding cardboard mats protecting the surface. I usually sew on one of my treadle machines, or set up an electric machine on my desk. I just use a standard ironing board. Where there's a will, there's a way.😄

    I've been thinking about making something like this, but just the board/batting/canvas so I can put it on my drafting table when I need it and remove when I need to use the drafting table as a desk. Then I can also lean the ironing set-up against the wall to reflect light and absorb sound for video conferencing.

    I don't have a good cutting setup and my sewing space is one side of my shared bedroom. But from this I'm considering constructing a topper for a folding table, something with hinges that I can fold and put away between uses. I could have some bits of wood on the back that fit over the smaller table. I like having some space underneath for toes.

    Like you, I have a large ironing surface over a set of deep drawers. In my case part of a kitchen. Absolutely vital. I also recently picked up a huge kitchen island that I use for drafting and cutting out. Kitchen cabinetry tend to be good heights for sewing usage, mine would suit you better than me, it is very high. I have a long piece of wood to stand on, that is 3"high . Moving house would be a nightmare of huge proportions lol

    Hehe, I look up from my sewing and it's Rebecca with staplegun, that's a vibe :)
    Right now my cutting "table" is one of those folding cardboard cutting boards on top of the rabbit's crate... my sewing table is the old Desk From Hell I swore we'd throw off the apartment balcony rather than move the thing to the house (then my in-laws moved it while I was at work) but it's good for the two Heavies (1960s Universal and 1914 Jones Brothers hand crank) that I don't want to have to lift and for cutting small pieces... my ironing board is up in the laundry room a flight of stairs away from the sewing machines and the floor upon which I sit while hand-sewing. Maybe someday I'll make a wooden cover for the rabbit crate that can double for cutting and ironing. So far he hasn't nibbled on the cardboard... yet... canvas might be safe. But right now when I need to cut something really big, I use the desk/gaming table downstairs, first off it's bigger than any other surface (I don't have the room to fold out the whole cardboard thing) and second, it's the only horizontal space in the house that's always kept free of clutter! Pluis we have a collection of end tables I can arrange for holding up the fabric ends and stuff so it doesn't pull everything off!

  • @teddy-3765
    @teddy-3765 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My table is made of two 2ft x4ft workbenches (on lockable wheels) that can be pushed together to make one big cutting surface in the middle of the room.
    They both have storage space (shelves) underneath (a big space under one, two big shelves under the other), which hold a LOT of stuff. They can also be rolled (the floor is laminate - much less likely to hide dropped pins than carpet) into an end-to-endconfiguration to form one long table down one side (or the middle) of the room, or have one rolled to each side of the room with an aisle down the middle of the room between them (better for circulation and providing two smaller work areas when hosting craft days for friends, or working on several smaller projects).
    This week I've got the tables rolled together as one large cutting surface (cutting mats on top) but pushed to one side of the room so (like yours) it's only accessible from three sides, which allows more space to get around the table (I'm not slim) and still works for my current projects (but doesn't allow access to the storage underneath the workbench forming the "back" of the table, unless I roll them forward a little).
    I sue a seperate folding ironing board (hangs on the back of the door when not in use) for big items and an ironing mat on one of the tables for smaller pressing jobs but, having seen this video, I'm now more inclined toward making both workbenches into ironing surfaces and doing away with the need to find space to set up the ironing board when I need it (which would also free-up the back of the door for farthingales, bustles, and panniers - which, admittedly, it does already, but they have to hook over the ironing board and get moved every time I need to set up the board for ironing....)

    Ohhhhhh to have a dedicated sewing space someday.... Alas, I'm an NYC apartment dweller, so my sewing surface is my (fairly big) computer desk with the keyboard moved. I have a regular old ironing board that I either use in the bedroom or move into the living room (depending on what my husband is doing at the time....) my cutting surface is a folding board (the cardboard kind) that I lay out on my bed..... it's all awkward and kind of a pain to have to put everything away instead of just shutting a door, but I'm also just a regular sewist though, not a costumer - otherwise I don't what the heck I would do! Someday we'll find a 2 bedroom maybe and that second bedroom is MINE (and a possible guest room, because again NY....)

    I have a very narrow area for cutting. I got two MALM 4-drawer chests separated with a Kallax 4 cubby unit and topped with a SÄLJAN 98" countertop (all from Ikea ). It makes for a long, not very wide, cutting area. Not ideal but it works better than cutting on the floor! I have lots of storage space, too.

    My ironing board is starting to fall apart so this is timely. Love, Love, L-O-V-E your table layout I also want a nice large high cutting table. I love how you have done birds with one stone!! The only thing I am going to try and do differently is figure out a way to make a casing and perhaps use elastic in the casing so I can take the cover off and wash it periodically. If anyone out there wanting to do build a table like this, if you can get your hands on an old pure wool blanket. the wool blanket works as well if not better than batting - so I am told. Oh.... and I also adore your beautiful red hair!

    My grandfather was a carpenter and I use two card tables he designed. I pushed them together. It's a good set up for me because I can use one table as a pattern fabric piece storage/handsewing area while I have my sewing machine in use while at the same time having enough room for the project to move around on via the machine as well as some adjustable desktop lamps so I can have good lighting.

    I did something similar with a wooden TV table. It was something I saw on Pinterest and, at the time, I didn't have room for my full size ironing board. Same as you I put the ironing board padding first, then a layer of cotton batting, and then some cotton fabric I had in my stash (I didn't have canvas). Then I sewed elastic around the edges so I could take it off of the TV table when necessary. We still have a bunch of TV tables and the cover is in storage right now a couple of miles away. So I can't get at it right now. So for now I use my tabletop ironing board on the TV table. I really wish I had my cover handy.

    I really like your cutting /ironing table ! Currently I am using 2 Ikea Bekväm carts that I plan to attach a desktop to for cutting as I mainly use a rotary cutter. I'd like to make a removable ironing board out of plywood as well as it would makes pressing quilt tops much easier to do

    I was thinking you need to make Dora a hide-y cave behind the table 🥰❤️

    I rent by myself and live on the second floor, so any furniture I have to be able to lug up the stairs alone. But I did get a folding cardboard cutting mat which fits beautifully on top of my full-size bed, and I use this for cutting out pattern pieces that are too big to fit on my regular sewing table.

    My father puts plywood on a large drawer. It does the entire wall. I intend to put a melanine surface on to transform it in a cutting/large fine work table. The room also have a hole wall where I will hang all my sewing supplies.

    this was very good. time to change mine. mine was a piece of 5/8th in plywood cut to my specs by my hubby and mounted to my adjustable ironing board. covered in a sheet of heat resistant material got at hardware, one layer of very good batting and a layer of canvas. just made it up but I love it. not big enough for skirts but great for everything else and ironing which I love to do.
    Question: I just bought a piece of fabric on sale, 54 in wide and was going to make a shorter walking skirt. Can I launder it, content stated 10% wool, 40 rayon and 50 poly. what do you think. I hate to think of dry cleaning it all the time.❤

      In my opinion, bigger is always better when it comes to an ironing and cutting table! 😉
      For the skirt, do you plan to be able to wash the skirt once you've worn it? My approach is always to launder the fabric like you're going to launder the finished product.

      Can you cut a swatch and test launder it the way you intend to launder your garment?

      If you intend to wash the skirt, definitely do wash the fabric before cutting. Would be better if it shrinks now than when it's a skirt.😀Use lower temperature for the washing machine though, and no tumble drying

    My sewing room is located in the guest room. I have a Transformer table that folds out to 118" long. I have a large cutting mat plus a 30x40" pressing board that is similar to yours except it is not attached and goes on top of the Transformer table. When we have guests I fold up the Transformer table and it goes against the wall looking sort of like a console and all the sewing paraphernalia goes into the walk-in closet and out of sight.

    Lovely new topper! Have you thought of scotch guarding the topper to protect against stains?

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hadn't thought of that at all! Do you think it would affect the ironability? I wouldn't want the scotch guard to transfer to other fabrics.

    I can't wait to get a real dedicated sowing space, and a dedicated crafting space. Now I have a small desk for my sowing machine and a table for every ting else... I want a desk dedicated to each hobby I do, but that's a lot of desks... the bottom layer on the ironing table, where did you by it? I can't find something like it, all I find is pre made ironing mats.

      I was able to get it at Joann's! (It's linked in the description)

    I used the Target cubbies. Had the local hardware store cut a MDF panel to fit. I covered the MDF with 3 layers of insolbrite. Topped that with my fashion fabric. Here's the link to my video. th-cam.com/video/ZzIDfcUumA8/w-d-xo.html
    I had enough MDF to make a flash top for another cubbie for a separate ironing station for small things. I even did a video recovering my table top ironing board.

    Quick question! How many layers of the cotton batting do you have on your table? I may or may not be looking into something similar and I'm currently unsure how much padding is needed to make it "cushion-y" enough to be able to iron on it :)
    Thank you!

    I think I would have taken the batting layer off and rotated it to the back. Otherwise this looks great!
    I have designed a fold away table I want to build for cutting and drafting. I have a bad habit of suddenly dropping my hobbies for months at a time and my sewing space is in the living room, so I want something I can put away and bring back out on a whim.

    Someone else who knows the struggle of finding cute size 12 shoes! Do you have any suggestions for a source for historical type shoes?

      American Duchess comes in size 12 now, which is really handy when I can fit them in the budget (about 1 pair per year). Funtasma also has some lace boots (I think they're called Dame?) that come in size 12 and are a lot cheaper.

    I would have just detached the batting and turned it around 180* so the front was the back…it seems to look unused…save having a hole in the front and replacing the whole batting…🥰🇦🇺
