Well put. Trading up to an sti from a wrx. Personally I thought the hatch was not as good looking as any of the generations of sedan but a lot of people liked it.
The fa20 is great honestly. No oil consumption issues, no ringland failure, no headgasket issues, no timing belt to replace, and doesn't randomly blow up like some ej engines. The car is also really quick off the line and it feels quick even just daily driving it. You could put $2-$3k worth of mods to a wrx and be a lot quicker than a STI especially if you're going E85. So you're saving roughly $8k by buying a wrx and be lot quicker with simple mods. Hopefully the next gen STI makes a better non outdated engine.

I agree. I test drove a WRX and the STI and I wasn't really THAT impressed with the STI. I couldn't justify spending 8-10k more for a daily driver. BUT, if I was going to track the car a lot I might have gotten the STI.
You might know about this already but the Perrin steering dampener lockout makes your steering less wobbly and more responsive, is an underrated mod. And for the shifting wobbliness I got the shift stopper non branded one from Ebay, had it for about a year without issues and that was night an day as well, they are $13

Man I'm suppose to go into the dealership this Friday to trade my 19 wrx for 20 sti. Hope I won't regret it. Nice video men like always well done. Love how your wrx sounds too. 🤙
Unless your wrx has some issues you're sick of, it really makes zero sense to do the trade. You're better off doing a private sale and then getting an STI with no trade-ins.
I’ve owned and driven a 2020 WRX STI for a year now as a daily in So Cal freeway traffic and I have no regrets. You won’t regret your decision. Each model has its own positives and negatives, and at the end of the day the STI is a good car as well.
Hi guys .. we are on the same boat .. I am getting my sti next week hope I didn't regret... I was worry about getting the sti would spend much more gas than the wrx or they are about the same ? As daily drive .. thanks guys
@@TheU2bstud nice comment ... Sti doesnt use a lot more gas than wrx right? I purchased the sti and getting it next week but heard about the milage on gas .. and I was worried I made the wrong choice on getting the sti over the wrx
@@kk-yy8oi if you bought this car you weren’t worrying about the gas mileage. You made the right decision, you’ll keep the STI much longer. And now you own something that people in the future will want once they stop making it.
Glad to see you're posting up vids more regularly! Luv your IG as always! I'm lowered & on stocks for winter right now... lol * "look like crap" right now. 😅 No way I'm running any of my Volks(TE37 or CE28)in the Canadian winters.
When you said the F80 M3 was boring, I thought you may have chosen a manual F30 340i xDrive with the B58, these cars are simply the best sport sedans in my opinion. I drove one a few times with the OEM power pack including M Performance exhaust, it was absolutely incredible, it is my dream sedan. No bashing or anything or the WRX and STI, they are fantastic cars, but the F30 340i is simply mind blowing, early torque that stays almost all through the rev range, the incredible inline 6 sound, sport interior...and insane modding potential
I was debating between the WRX and the STI, but with the engine being so outdated, I chose the WRX. I have the 2020 Wrx base model in the world rally blue w/ the STI short shifter. I wasn't expecting the STI short shifter until I drove and saw it. It's a daily car, which sucks, but I have fun driving it.
ditch that sti short shifter as soon as you can because it's total garbage. Get the boomba shift plate/shifter instead with a heavy shift knob and you will enjoy your car so much more.
The engine was what leaned me towards the Wrx. Always itched for the Sti but it didn’t make any sense to buy it just for the rumble. Was even considering trading my Wrx after 2 years with it but nah I’ll see what the 2022 Sti brings but so far my stage 2 Wrx I’m content with.
100% agree here 17' WRX the FA20DIT imo is superior to the EJ25. I'm already preppin for the 2022 STi 🤤 that FA24DIT gonna be capable of 600whp stock block an heads 😳🤘 great content 👍
I have a GTI and I was originally looking at a Type R to replace it soon but man the dealer mark up is insane. I then shifted my attention to the STI a dream car of mine since I was younger but worried I wouldn't fit in it. I am super tempted to buy one now but I still worry about the reliability of that motor and with the next gen being so close.....only problem is waiting at least a year like you mentioned. I don't want to jump on the first model year of the next gen of it. Gotta stay strong at least till the end of 2022 or so haha.
Dig the build man! I had a 17 CWP WRX and loved the life out of that car. Coming from mustangs (5.0) this one was for sure slower but much better for what I wanted. I get what you mean with the engine feel. The WRX is much better down low while the STI is built for top end. I ended up getting an 18 STI after losing my WRX. For how I drive and yearn for the 90’s, to me it was like getting a classic in 2020’s. For sure not everyone’s style but it suited me fine. Subaru usually uses the WRX as a test platform before the STI gets something as they don’t want to mess up their top line up. Glad you enjoy yours though!
That makes a lot of sense about it being a modern classic. That's exactly what it is with its engine and hydraulic steering. Perfect for those who are looking for that
@@TheShaddix I agree, it worked for a long while. But now it seems to the time has come to enter the modern era. Everyone yearns to make power and have more creature comforts. I’m sure the new STI with the FA24 will be close to what people are hoping to get. If it works out really well it’ll show that they have listened to the community.
@@jquannjones the only issue I have with the new design are those squared wheel arches (from what I saw in the spy shots of the new wrx...). I am really not sure about that. The only time that really ever worked was on the aventador and the urus lamborghinis.
@@TheShaddix That is true. The spy shots to me make the car just look weird. I really hope that’s not what it really looks like as it seems to be too angular and taken notes off of other companies (like you said Lamborghini arches, the rear looks like an Honda accord, the Lexus type exhausts etc). Tim will tell really. Otherwise the VA chassis will have a lot of swaps getting done lol.
I've seen STI engines blow up under stock power. The engine is just too old and unreliable for me and that drove me away from getting an STI. The only reason I was considering one was for the transmission but after doing some research you can swap an STI trans into a WRX fairly easily. Anyway great video as always and I completely agree with you.
Michael Puzzo yes they do your research, the EJ25 commonly spins bearings, cracks ringlands and cracks head gaskets. I’ve had both and the FA20 is WAY more reliable stock and up to 350whp.
@@Steve-qr2lm you can't really blame an poorly maintained engine to blow. Most people stay the engine is stock but put on cold air intake and exhaust without a tune. Most happen due to people misusing the car. I have seen stock ej reach 200+k miles too. Just depends on how you maintain the car.
Thanks for this vid fam I’m liking the WRX more I love the turbo noises and the mpg and like you said it looks the same visually so if I find a white 2019 wrx I’m on it
Despite of this nice video, consider sti also, it's the legend and now is just a last chance to get it :) (warning: recaro seats aren't comfortable for everyone, I learnt that in hard way, not sure about base seats. But in theory you can swap recaros to base seats if it's needed but not in revers as cars with base seats are not prewired for recaros, also dealers don't sell full seat assemblies, just parts, so you either assemble seat by yourself or get used one from car died in some accident probably)
And I mentioned above that there is 2800rpm fuel stumble issue in STIs, but they say that wrx has fuel starvation issue in long left turns. Both issues have aftermarket solutions and, I believe, it's possible to live also with both of them.
@@TheShaddix okay just asking because I’m new to the whole Subaru scene so I wanted to get a baseline of what’s good with out messing with the engine internals thanks 🙏🏼
I had both the WRX and the STI. The STI is the superior car from the factory. The transmission alone is worth the price of the STI. I feel the stock STI is easier to daily drive especially if you are not worried about MPG's. The STI is more stable at high speeds.
Easier to drive? It's the exact opposite actually: the steering is harder (hydraulic vs electric); there is little to no low end torque; the ride is harsher, etc. I had a chance to drive a few from different years (18 and 15), and the newer ones were easier for sure, but not as easy as a wrx in terms of input. Stable at high speeds mainly due to the wing and its harder steering feel, plus a stiffer suspension, bushings, etc. Once you mod a wrx with the right mods, it is super stable at any speed. All the bushings in that car are meant for comfort.
actually thought about this many many times. The answer always ends up being a no. I kept in touch with almost every owner of it and as far as I know, it is still running strong with the same exact mods, nothing changed. As much as I think I would enjoy having it back, there are many reasons I don't want to get into as to why I don't want it back. I actually prefer my wrx over the z in every single category.
I chose a WRX for just about all of the same reasons! STI is just too much car for me, if I'm being honest with myself. I really liked the earlier spool up of the WRX's twin scroll turbo, too. It's nice to have some get up and go without having to downshift and make a ruckus. I just wish I didn't already feel so obligated to buy an Accessport -- that slump from 4000-5500 RPM feels worse and worse every time.
If your F80 m3 was a manual transmission, would you have loved it more and kept it over the DCT? Just curious because I switched from a 2015 wrx to a 2015 bmw 2 series. i had my wrx for a year only and had several issues which made me trade it in. Love the wrx build!
I would've liked it a lot more, but there were many more things I disliked besides the dct. It was too big and heavy. The interior was kinda unappealing too with all that leather, not the type I like usually. I got it thinking it would be the ultimate car, but it couldn't have been further from what I wanted it to be. I did reprogram the dct which didn't seem to do anything after it relearned again. Anyway, just a huge disappointment and a mistake. I look back at that car as the worst financial mishap.
I sold mine and got an 04 m3! The wrx was just so underwhelming! Subaru did a awful job tuning it and cutting timing ect. If you don’t mind the funds to make it faster do it by all means but after speaking to tuners they told me it’s not if but when. Many 15+ having bearing issues. Yours is very nice!
Love the videos man... quick question or maybe an idea for a future video how do you feel about the "real vs fake wheels" Or "built not bought" dilemmas in the community
I've had all sorts of wheels including rays, hre, work, etc. For me it's all about what you can afford while still being able to mod the rest of the car. If you own a GTR and get replica wheels, then that's a bit odd. If you have a wrx/sti and spend 3-4k on rays wheels, then that's also odd unless you build the car for the track and require your wheels to be lightest and strongest possible. It all comes down to your budget. As far as making a video on this, nah.
@@luisb3786 then you need to get this power hungrer out of your system first with a GTR or something similar. Then you will appreciate slower cars. I used to be just like you in this regard.
@@TheShaddix Agreed, for a daily. A slower car is more fun in my opinion. Because you can wind it out and "feel" like youre racing around. But with 600-700hp you have to baby it to not get into some serious trouble lol but a lot of people just want that ego.
Watching your videos and having a look at what you like, did the red interior on the sti throw you off too?? I got a WRX because I can't stand the red interior parts on the sti, I like all black interior.
Subaru STI is very special car but it's not easy to live with it. Close ratio steering rack on sti isn't that close as owner may wish, say, golf GTI corners much much better (and costs less, and it's substantially quieter on bad concrete roads, and has instantaneous and very smooth power delivery and better light and doesn't bog on launch, and stays flat in corners). Actually smooth throttle response of GTI made me think that there was something wrong with my subaru sti, some sort of issue. And it turned out that there is the issue and it's very well known 12 years old "2800rmp fuel stumble issue". The problem is with badly redesigned fuel pressure regulator. Of course there are plenty of aftermarket solutions but they require changes in engine compartment and custom tune, if you lease your car that's might be not an option, if you buy a new car that for sure will void your warranty and EJs are known for ring land failures and for rod bearing issues, so owner may want his car warranty to stay valid for a while.
Thanks for the super detailed post! I am sure a lot of people will find this helpful. I have had a golf GTI before and it was awesome. However, I would never ever cross shop a gti with an sti or a wrx. To me a golf will always be a fun hatch grocery getter, not the type of car everyone lusts over.
@@TheShaddix that wasn't easy decision for me. Subaru sti is about emotion and those emotions are something quite controversial: love and pain. GTI is different, its just all around good car, very good, it's hard for me to admire that, but just objectively that's true. Unlike gti, I wouldn't recommend subaru sti to everyone, but if you are a car enthusiast and have never had STI with EJ, now it's just last chance to get it (let's let alone a point that model leaving market isn't good subject for autoblog). I got it, used for a year and traded-in for gti, but personally I got back lost driving fun with it and would regret for not owning it. My only advice on choosing subaru sti is make sure that recaro seats good for you: they were not good for my back and my internals suffered and felt unhealthy compressed as recaros keep you in kinda bent shape all the time, I am suspecting that base seats may work better. For those who are choosing Subaru pay special attention to that, I tried all sorts of support pillows and nothing helped, wanted to straighten my back all the time. (move to GTI solved that problem for me, gti seats keep my back straight and even hug better then Subaru recaros)
@@TheShaddix when I was choosing Subaru a year ago I tried wrx also of course and it was kinda dissipated or loosen, then tried sti and fell in love to how stiff and solid it is. Stiff and solid are from the point of car control of course, plastic interior trim panels are loosen and rattle all around on not perfect road in both of course, it's the subaru
I need an opinion guys if you dont mind... im buying these new headlights for my 2008 wrx but im not sure which one to get, i want to buy something that doesnt break the bank but also something new than the oem headlights. Any recommendations?
I am an audiophile, of course, I do. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about headers. You can have identical setups on both of these cars, and they will NOT sound the same. Not by a long shot.
@@setoman1 I have heard a lot of STI's and yes, when modded properly they do sound awesome. But to me, a properly modded WRX also sounds equally good. Excluding the classic subie rumble, there is just nothing special about an STI sound. When they switch to equal length headers they start to sound just like a wrx. But if you think it's still better, then you made the right choice for yourself
To me, it is like the difference between Coke and Pepsi. Some people can tell the difference. Some people THINK they can tell the difference. Most people don't have a clue, but everybody has their own preference regardless.
@@setoman1 I have met a lot of people like that and actually did a test with them with coke and pepsi. None could tell the difference. It's all bs. But I get you man! If I had an sti, i'd probably also be biased towards that because it's my car.
The only "better" part of a sti is the dccd diff control .Stage 2 in mods on a wrx and your faster than a sti .Upgrade to some bigger brakes and there's your "sti" for a lot cheaper.I chose the wrx simply for the newer motor ie:Direct Injection
@@yohan1902 it don’t fucking matter u still gotta rebuild the engine past 400hp and wrx is like 400 hp as well so u gonna spend money either way smhh🤦🏽
If you have the money you could of just twin scrolled an sti and have the quicker spool like the wrx. in my opinion the sti is worth the extra money just for the transmission and brembos.
The issue is the EJ25 is old and unreliable, even in stock form they can do headgaskets or crack ringlands, I'd never trust one for hard driving/track work (have had both).
Depends on the owner. Not everyone tries to make their wrx look/sound/feel like an sti. I, for one, never cared because I never saw anything about the sti being so special.
@@TheShaddix Definitely depends on what the driver is looking for. The STi and WRX are completely different cars. Different motor, exhaust, steering, suspension, AWD system, brakes, chassis. Basically the only things similar are the body panels and interior. I drove both and the STi feels much more rugged, raw and angry. Handling in stock form is far superior to the WRX. However, big trade offs for a daily driver. The WRX outshines the STi with road noise, comfort, fuel efficiency etc. At the end of the day, its completely driver dependent.
@@shafikdiwan1869 key words you said were "in stock form". I would never argue that an sti feels all those things compared to a wrx. I bought sti and this car is overrated based on price but theirs no other cars in this category. Four things I hate about sti are steering too loose, mpg is worst, poor sound systems, and useless Recaro seats. I sold my 19 NSX with 6560 miles on it and mint conditions to carmax past Tuesday.

Hi guys .. we are on the same boat ..

No way I'm running any of my Volks(TE37 or CE28)in the Canadian winters.

No bashing or anything or the WRX and STI, they are fantastic cars, but the F30 340i is simply mind blowing, early torque that stays almost all through the rev range, the incredible inline 6 sound, sport interior...and insane modding potential
i believe you, but I just don't care for their cars anymore.
@@TheShaddix Oh? Thanks for the heads up. I’ll look into. Time to save up! Haha
@@marcj.d watch my shifting video from like a year ago. I went over all the mods I did on mine.
Beautiful car man. All the custom touches with carbon you’ve done are clean and just the right amount of added flare. 10/10 hands down.
🤩
I have a GTI and I was originally looking at a Type R to replace it soon but man the dealer mark up is insane. I then shifted my attention to the STI a dream car of mine since I was younger but worried I wouldn't fit in it. I am super tempted to buy one now but I still worry about the reliability of that motor and with the next gen being so close.....only problem is waiting at least a year like you mentioned. I don't want to jump on the first model year of the next gen of it. Gotta stay strong at least till the end of 2022 or so haha.
The reliability is in the fate of the owner. Learn to tame with it and it'll treat you good.
You're back!
Sti engines don’t blow under stock power unless the driver is brainless
Michael Puzzo yes they do your research, the EJ25 commonly spins bearings, cracks ringlands and cracks head gaskets. I’ve had both and the FA20 is WAY more reliable stock and up to 350whp.
@@Steve-qr2lm so you’re quick to dis the ej but ignore the weak rods in the fa? Bias.
I have a 2012 sti with 115k on the odo. Been running 350+ whp since 7k. It's all about not being a nipple head
Thanks for this vid fam I’m liking the WRX more I love the turbo noises and the mpg and like you said it looks the same visually so if I find a white 2019 wrx I’m on it
👍Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Planning to have one soon👍
Man, I don’t know it’s just me or what, but I really love the tires and wheels set up 🤩🔥
I just bought a 2019 WRX a week ago and I love it , amazing car, question though with all the engine mods you are only at 301 WHP ?
That's a good number for 91 octane, that's all I can say.
@@TheShaddix okay just asking because I’m new to the whole Subaru scene so I wanted to get a baseline of what’s good with out messing with the engine internals thanks 🙏🏼
I love your build period.
Such a clean Subaru!! Any plans coming for the taillights?
There is just one option I would consider, but a lot of people reported issues with those, so I am keeping it stock for now.
I went through this a few weeks ago. Dead set on the sti and ended up with a ‘21 wrx.
What color powder coat are your wheels ? They look so good 💰
bronze
Nice video bro, very informative. Just wanna know if would you buy your old nismo back again if you had the opportunity to ? That car was sweet man
actually thought about this many many times.
Get an etune or a protune, don't just run an OTS map. Those are junk
WRX #1
Do what makes you happy! Most of the issues in these cars come from crappy driving habits too.
Thanks for sharing your experience. As a daily wrx guy i'm 100% with You. At the end, You pick the Best choice for you! Subie life 4 ever!!😏

Welcome back and can’t wait to see what else you can do. That’s also the same reasons why I went with my 19 wrx as well
Ended up getting rid of my wrx 400whp wasn’t enough and the cost to make it faster was too much with the aftermarket ecu
if 400 whp were not enough for you, then you should have never even started with a wrx.
@@TheShaddix started with an intake and a tune like everyone else just snowballed till 400 felt slow
@@Jswick112 exactly. At least you get that.
Watching your videos and having a look at what you like, did the red interior on the sti throw you off too?? I got a WRX because I can't stand the red interior parts on the sti, I like all black interior.
Nah, that actually is something I do like in the sti
Hey man the content is simple but enjoyable keep it going we missed you
Subaru STI is very special car but it's not easy to live with it.

Why I traded in my 2017 WRX for a 2020 STI: It sounds better.
I don't care what you do to your exhaust. An FA will never sound as good as an EJ.
if you like the rumble, then yes. Otherwise, bullshit
You're still left out with the weaker WRX trans.
@@yohan1902 it don’t fucking matter u still gotta rebuild the engine past 400hp and wrx is like 400 hp as well so u gonna spend money either way smhh🤦🏽
Basically FA vs EJ
But boy, the AWD in STI is something 🤤
Wrx’s are awd
Only if you're able to use its benefits (track, offroad, etc). Otherwise, the AWD in the wrx is perfect
I did the opposite got 2018 wrx and did a sti transmission and brembos swip
One of my favorite WRX builds there is. Just such a clean car. 🔥
man i love those wheels good sir. every time i check out your vids and see those wheels im like dang i wanna pair of those. good stuff

STI all the way.
but the STI gives you the ability to flex tho, lololol
Perfect video. Im currently planning to trade in for a sti. Just 4 months into full bolt on and tuned...🤦♂️
Same reason, motor was better in my opinion. Instant Torque and a decent six speed. Not great decent.
"A WRX is always trying to be an STI. An STI is never trying to be a WRX". Regardless. Amazing build! Nicely done.
But that rugged feel can be obtained with a few (quite a few) mods. I knew this much when getting a wrx and that a lot of work had to be done, but that's exactly what I wanted to do.
