  • Correction, the WRX we drove was in fact a 2018 model, NOT 2017 as said in the video!! Watch as the Motor Minds crew compares the Subaru WRX with the WRX STI!! Is the STI worth the extra money?? Huge thanks to World Subaru of Shrewsbury NJ for lending us these cars and for being so supportive! Be sure to subscribe and find us on social media!

    Yeah I almost went with the STI but Fuel Economy for my daily commuter car had to be higher. Around town power is also extremely good on the WRX. If I could only have one car in my life then I might go STI but the WRX is the better one for me and I didn't settle. I defined my needs and bought the correct one for me. I also love manual transmissions and very few other cars can touch the WRX.

      Motor Minds Productions and the split Dif in the STI don’t control how much power you send to the fronts or backs.

    • @ThePretendgineer
      @ThePretendgineer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually does. The center dif can adjust power front/rear. You can run it in full auto mode or set split yourself manually. The selector is behind the SI Drive knob on the center console.

    • @watersnortmoment3734
      @watersnortmoment3734 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not even remotely correct for the STI. It's a legit adjustable differential.

    My apologies to everyone. As it turns out, the white WRX was in fact a 2018 model. However, we believed that we were being leant a 2017 model because we were going to drive the car more and the dealership didn't want us to devalue the car. However, as more of you commented we realized that an error might've been made. Unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't allow for annotations anymore so there is no way to fix it in the video but now you all know what happened and that the white WRX is in fact a 2018 car. Sorry for the confusion.

    I missed my 2004 STi and went to buy another 9 months ago. I had the money for an STi, but the 2017 WRX with the new FA20 direct injection engine was a better choice for a daily driver. The STi suspension was quite a bit bumpier and the exhaust was extremely loud and droned inside the cabin vs my WRX with the exact same STi performance exhaust. And the STi gas mileage is about 30% worse - I have no trouble getting 23-25 mpg City and 32-35 mpg Hwy, and my combined average is 26.5mpg vs 20 avg with my old STi (mine had the same mpg rating as the 2017 STi at 17/23). So I get 225hp at the wheels vs 247hp at the wheels, and one review got the same 4.8 second 0-60 with a proper launch, although 13.7 qtr mile vs 12.6 second qtr mile for the STi. It's close enough for me. You can buy an ungraded amp, speakers, and subwoofer + a Rolex with the money you save. I passed my 2015 Forester XT turbo down to my son to replace his 10 year old RAV4. Everyone is happy this way.
    PS: I got leather and navigation 440watt sound system, maxed out model with BBS wheels, STi exhaust and short shifter, except for NO CVT with eyesight. I added an Audiocontrol LC-7i sound processor with a JL Audio 5ch amp, Focal Speakers front and rear, and dual 10" Kenwood subs facing the rear, and with an ECOhitch invisi hidden hitch I can attach my bike rake to carry our mountain bikes.

You get better braking, better shifting (no rev hang), better feeling clutch, control over throttle response, and the classic Boxer Rumble (at least right now). Some folk will not be able to live with the STI, that's possible, but don't tell me that hard-core driving is your thing. You'll need to spend $20K more to do better than an STI.

With an Intake + Protune i make 285whp and 300 wtq which outperforms a stock STI. For 10k less and only $1200 in mods i make more horsepower and torque than an STI.

    I just bought a "used" 2017 WRX Premium with 600 miles on it for 26k with no sales tax(I'm in Oregon). The STI has a wing, c diff and Brembo's, and a 15 year old time tested motor. I have power and torque early so I'm having fun everywhere I drive without redlining my car every shift. There is a reason most WRX's & STI's with the old EJ motor are ragged out with new motors and transmissions. These videos don't mention that 30-40,000 dollars is a lot of fucking money. Unless you live at the track and are rich enough to pay 50-70k over 5 years just to have fun with your car I say get the WRX. It might look like a boring Camry but it's the smarter purchase for most of us. I would like to thank whoever saved me 6 grand by trading in a 2017 WRX Premium with 600 miles on it. He likely was the kind of guy who can afford an STI and likely has another daily driver anyway!

    WOW, all you people raving about the FA20 engine really need to do your research !!!! YOU CANNOT mod it cheaper than the ej25 !!!!!! The minute you even think you want to go above 300 crank hp, you better be prepared to put $8-10k in internals in first !!!! You will be bending rods and snapping your crank in no time if you don't !!!! PROVEN FACT!!!! PLUS - the transmission and drivetrain on the WRX is crap. Heard the expression the tranny is made of glass ? Well its pretty much true. On my 5th pull in my 2018 wrx first gear snapped !!!!! lukily for me it was covered by warranty because I haven't done anything to the car, but the second you plug in an accessport you just voided the warranty - and yes, they can tell if you have used one ! its one of the first things they check for with any warranty issue. So, long and short, from someone that is now on my second WRX - had a 2011, and now a 2018 - Spend the extra few grand up front and get the STi !!!!!! if your still not convinced, message me as I have a 2018 WRX premium with under 8000 miles on it for sale.

    Great in depth video, theres one thing I disagree with though. You said that in order to fit a large intercooler into the car, they had to do it top mount style, the fact is that there is actually more space for a larger intercooler in a traditional front mount style. My theory is that they put the intercooler on top so that they can say "hey our hood scoop is functional"

    Great review! As for the road noise, once they move to the global platform it will be much more silent. They already did it on the Forester and the Impreza/Crosstrek...they added thicker windshields and added more insulation. I have a Crosstrek and it is noisy but when I get in my parent's Forester it is much better!
    I wonder how the CVT version of the WRX does, any plans on testing it?

    • @MotorMindsProductions
      @MotorMindsProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GroovyMotion That is a good point. Despite the facelift the WRX still rides on the same platform as before. Maybe Subaru will put different interiors in all their cars for the redesign, that'd be nice! As for the CVT, no plans yet as most enthusiasts will choose the manual and that is what we were offered.

    • @groovymotion5706
      @groovymotion5706 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they definitely upped the quality in the new Impreza and now Crosstrek. Next in 2019 is either the Forester or the Legacy to be on the new platform. Unfortunately, Subaru played the "all new design" for the WRX/STi so I think they won't put it on the new platform for another 2-3 years, which is a real bummer!

    Shows a 2018 wrx then drives a 2017 wrx??? Compares a 2017 to a 2018 when a 2018 had some revised suspension, new shift feel, and smoother clutch take up...I'm really quite confused.

      There was an error. We thought the dealership was lending us a 2017 model but in fact it was a 2018 model. Extremely embarrassing mistake haha but these things happen. The white WRX that we drove was in fact a 2018.

    The "REAL REASON" you opt for the STi is the entire drivetrain is different. WRX has so so center diff and open front/rear diffs. The sti has a driver controlled center diff and locking front/rear diffs. You like cars and make good videos, this is obvious. However, this is a poor review of the two cars. You lack the knowledge to compare them properly. Still, thumbs up.

    OVER PRICED for something stuck in 1980 for design , they have a great platform to have a really sweet car , but Subaru is so afraid to let their designers GO and design a decent looking car ! And to stop making the 5 door was a mistake !

    • @MotorMindsProductions

      Your right They never have made a good looking car . They need new designers BAD , The 2016 Concept WRX was a knock out on design and looks , I was actually going to buy one when they cam out , but seen the ugly crap they decided on and decided to keep my Infinity AWD with 300 hp ! Sad because Subaru has a great platform but they don't Flaunt it !

    Are these 2 using the same transmission? It is different for the 2007 Hawkeye version where the sti 's transmission is stronger, able to take more hp upgrades.

    • @MotorMindsProductions
      @MotorMindsProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Motto No the transmissions are different in the two cars. The WRX has a less robust tranny with a cable linkage shifter whilst the STI has a beefier transmission that has a parallel rod shift linkage and closer ratios.

      wrx effect The FA20 runs higher boost stock vs EJ STI stock...the FA20 is a better more efficient engine.Dont get me wrong I’ve had a few Subies and have much love for the EJ but it is an out dated engine

      @Terminator4000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      wrx effect the fa series is a strong motor and is proven however people are still learning how to push the engines limits. Ej series has 20 years of R & D so it makes sense why the ej is more capable than the fa. Dont get me wrong the fa series is excellent for your average driver however the ej is alot more capable of mods and rev happy when built right.

    If a stock STi is "crazy fast" you better not drive a new Camaro SS 1lE, a Corvette, GT350, Focus RS, etc, etc, etc. The new STi isn't any faster than a 2004 model. That's 13 years with the car running 4.7 (0-60) and 13.3 (1/4) times with a skilled driver. I mean come on Subaru lets see a solid increase in power.
