Agreed on all points. My first car was a 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible and despite owning everything from a Camry to a twin-turbo Supra to an E36 BMW, I was always left with a love of comfortable over-powered large luxury sedans. A couple months ago I sold my Model 3 Performance to a friend and replaced it with a Model S Plaid and couldn't be happier. It's not a flickable canyon-carver, but I have other vehicles for that. The Plaid is my ideal daily driver.
The model S has timeless looks. Would've been nice is the rear were even a little wider, maybe about 1cm on each side. And a little higher rear fenders. I love the aggressive stance.
@@DescartesRenegade did you read my comment? Im talking about the rear you utter moron. No porsche isnt out dated because they actually update the exterior of their cars quite often.
Great review! Thanks for sharing. I have a MS90D with free supercharging. Want to upgrade to the new style MS but its so difficult to give up the free energy and premium connectivity for life. I may just drive this car to the ground. Honestly speaking though, even after 5 years of ownership, I'm still excited to drive the car every time I get in it. Car still feels fresh thanks to the constant firmware updates and still plenty quick as a daily driver.
Thanks for the comment! Great to hear about your Model S 90D. It sounds like you are happy with the car and it is running well - I don't think it is worth the cost for you to move into a refreshed Model S.
1 year late - great review. I just picked up my 2024 M3P and it absolutely feels like a rocket. I'd love to get a used plaid after the lease is up as I am really enjoying the Tesla experience.
The new M3P looks great! I love the new design and interior, and the performance is great! Congrats! I plan to keep my Plaid for the forseeable future. You can follow how my car holds up, though I'm thinking you would get a 2024+ Plaid with HW4 when your lease is up.
The Model S is a much better choice than the Model 3. The 3 feels more like an advanced go-kart than a real car. If pricing were a factor I would choose a Polestar 2 as my choice EV over a Tesla Model 3 since the Polestar 2 has a much better interior.
I came across your channel today and it was a refreshing perspective on the model S and EVs in general. Like you I have owned many cars including several Audis and Bmws, 3 Porsche, Lexus, as well as Hondas, Toyotas chevys, pontiacs etc, etc. Eighty cars in all with my 81st being a 2022 Tesla model S long range. I echo most of your thoughts and comments. It’s a great luxury sport sedan. After all my vehicles owned I still don’t understand the criticism regarding the interior quality. It’s more minimalist true but the 2022 is of very nice quality. The Model S driving experience is unique and very satisfying. I bought it for the styling, drivability, Tesla reputation and longevity, as well as its superior network and software. I too have ICE cars, A 21 BMW m240i 6 speed, and a few various SUVs two of which are hybrids. All these cars are great for various reasons. However, I find myself driving the Tesla every chance I can and expect to keep it quite a while. I look forward to watching your other videos.
Thanks for your feedback and for sharing your perspective! Wow, 81 cars! I'm on my 28th - I have a long way to go, lol. I have 26k miles on my Model S Plaid and still gravitate towards it - it is such a good, well rounded vehicle. I don't want to daily drive anything else.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee 81 cars and I have the list of what I paid, what I sold for and time owned. However I am 69 years young so I have had more time to acquire than you and many of my cars were 1/2 to 1/3 of what they cost today.
Don't underestimate the value of over the air updates. I have a 2020 GMC Sierra Denali and a 2020 Model Y. In the three years I have owned both vehicles my city has had several completed turnpikes and new roads. My Model Y always has the latest maps. On my GMC the maps are out of date. GM wants $150 to update my maps on the navigation system.
That's a good point! The updates take place in an efficient manner and don't require any out of pocket costs. Teslas are the only car i've owned / driven where I prefer the car's navigation system over using my phone. The maps are always up to date.
great Video Joe! Ordered my Tesla Plaid in Ultra Red last week. Should be in end of month. Do you still own the car? Is it still one of your favorites?
Great to hear about your incoming Plaid! Yes, I still own this car and still consider it the best all around car for me. I posted an update at 34k miles (about 5 months ago): th-cam.com/video/ZdO1L1BVvtU/w-d-xo.html . The car now has ~42k miles on it. I plan to post another update at 45k miles.
Model 3 seems so budget compared to S. I think more would like Tesla if they had the chance to test drive a model S. A blue plaid is absolutely great looking car!
finally someone said it about the wheels on teslas. way too thin for the cars size and not a good look at all from the rear, looks like they're riding on black nickels 🤣. that was always one of the main deal breakers for me. nice to see they addressed that issue with the model s plaid, now that's how it's supposed to look.. beautiful car!
Hey Joe, great review in my opinion. The only thing I didn’t hear you talk about was build quality I hear about. But, since you didn’t mention. I guess that’s no real issue and it sounds like you do enjoy this car very much. I am considering a 2023 Model S Plaid. I have 991.2 Turbo S Cab I need to drive more but I don’t. Not sure why it’s amazing in its own right. I’ve rented a 4 Teslas through Turo. P100D, 2021 model S Plaid, 2022 model Y Performance and 2023 model S Plaid. I had a level 2 charger installed at home to maximize probable ownership experience. I love Teslas. Thanks again for a great review man. Hopefully you check in and do another video at different milestones in your ownership experience to better inform people like me that love these cars but still on the fence. Thanks Joe.
Thanks for the comment! The build quality is not perfect but I'm fine with it. It is much better than my old 2018 Model 3 Performance but there are a few panel alignments (1 on the outside and 2 on the inside) that are little off. They are just assembly issues that could be fixed (I'm handy enough to address them, but haven't felt the need to) - I prefer assembly issues over engineering issues. The Plaid is my daily driver - I had recently picked up a couple lower price point fun cars that I thought would replace it, but after couple months with them, I think the Plaid is still the ultimate daily driver for me so I'm keeping it. I plan to film a 30k mile update next weekend.
@The Life of Joe that sounds Awesome man. I can't wait to see the video. Don't pull any punches and please tell us about any range issues if any. Thank you Sir.
once you actually get going, it is not as fast/or faster than most decent performance cars. From a start, yes it is plenty quick but I would not call it ‘fast’. I have a 22 M3P.
@@simpleman6520 I have a MYP and I always feel like everyone else is moving in slow motion. To be fair tho my fasted cars have been a Mustang Roush 07 and a BMW 528 2014. Neither felt as fast. Side note I drive the Plaid and it didn’t seem as jerky fast as I thought it would be.
@@simpleman6520it goes 0-80mph as fast as a Bentley Continental GT. How fast are you people going? Lol. Unless you’re on the autobahn it’s absurdly fast in 99% of realistic situations. This isn’t about drag strips or top speed, they’re talking about “highway driving”.
Haha I know what you mean. I have a '22 3P and even though some cars are quicker, I'm never dissatisfied with the acceleration... But I still want a Plaid. It will probably be my next car, but the LR is still plenty quick, TBH. I drove one a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it.
Great review. I'm also a petrol head - love all types of cars. I have a built (cage and everything) Audi UrQuattro as my fun/track/sunday car - and my daily is now a Tesla M3LR. Picking up my '23 Plaid in 2 weeks or so. So hyped!!! I personally think the Model S is one of the best looking cars on the road. A timeless design in many ways. As you said, EVs have no soul, but that's not the purpose. I can't drive another car for a daily other than an EV from now on. I love the one pedal driving, the instant torque, no vibrations, all the small stuff like; great app, HEPA filters for tunnels, amazing infotainment, no maintenance etc, and of course the sheer speed of an EV. One question though: The one thing I HATE about my M3LR is that it's freaking LOUD. I even have the 18" for summer and winter. How much more quiet is the Plaid to the Model 3 in terms of road and wind noise? Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback! Congrats on the incoming Plaid! I too do not want to to daily a non-EV - they are so efficient and good for that duty. The difference in cabin noise between my old 2018 Tesla Model 3 Performance and 2021 Tesla Model S plaid was noticeable. The Model 3 had more tire noise and wind noise. I think the dual pane glass on the Model S is a significant contributor. If you are coming from a 2020+ Model 3, the difference might not be as noticeable since the newer Model 3s have dual pane glass. My Model 3 had gotten significantly louder as the rear drive unit started to fail - It was gradual so I didn't really notice until the car got much quieter after Tesla replaced the rear drive unit. The relatively flared rear fenders / quarter panels of the Model S are out there to be pelted by sand and rocks from the front tires. I recommend putting on mudflaps. I have the OEM mudflaps and I don't think they cover enough. Another commenter here had pointed me to the RPM Tesla mudflaps. I plan to pick those up soon to try. I have the 21" Arachnids and had the inner edge of my rear passenger tire wear through the cords at around 17k miles. If you get the 21" wheels, I recommend checking your rear tires regularly after 10k miles. I suspect it was an alignment issue (toe out) combined with how square the edge is on that wheel / tire combo. My understanding is that the 19" Tempest wheels do not have that problem. I had my wheels realigned and just picked up a set of 20"x10" Tsportline wheels for the winter with 285 wide tires. We'll see how those wear. I have 20k miles on the car now and the interior is still rattle free - the car feels solid.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee thanks for the reply! I went for 19" due to comfort, range and less noise. Both summer and winter. Your tire issue might be a combination of rim size and the fact that you are driving in low. If alignment is setup by Tesla for normal height you will get more camber than it's setup for and therefor wear on the inner sides of the tire. My plan is to drive it on normal height all the time. Also, forgot to mention, regarding EV as daily is no more time at the gas station 98% of the time. Only road trips which is epic. Also looking forward to the extra screen. I understand that you didn't care for the screen, but that's also a thing I don't like about the Model 3. That part takes away too much real estate from the map and other stuff. Glad to see I'm not the only petrol head that loves EVs for daily. That being said, as you mentioned, you NEED a fun / Sunday ICE car. But then it's the perfect combination. It only makes it that more special if you don't drive a ICE every day!
I strongly suggest doing a turo before you buy the S. Remember these cars share much of the same dna. I did a two day turo waiting for my plaid (I currently own a 2019 performance 3). I think the S is actually louder than me 3. The pogo effect while driving on air suspension is horrible. Yoke steering is not as connected and the model 3. Feels like it has some play. Noticeably less headroom. Very uncomfortable back seats. Wide very wide. Sir there are almost 300 used Plaids for sale on the used market, buyer be warned. Final, fact this car looses value at a epic rate. 2021 10k miles online for sale 105k and still falling.
@@scottw595 You MUST have gotten a lemon of a Model S. The old S/X is another level in regards to road and wind noise vs the Model 3. From the newest reviews I have read - the new one is much quieter than the old. So way better than Model 3. That being said - the Model 3 LR (2020) has the worse road noise of any car I have driven in my 36 year old life. My parents (much cheaper) Chevy Bolt is way better. In regards to testing one; I live in Norway. The first Model S Plaids are here in a couple of weeks. It's a ''23. I have 2 week "test period" in the contract, and if it's not way better in regards to road noise vs the Model 3 I am giving it back. Also, I really want a car with a bigger and easily accessible trunk, heat pump (as I live in a cold climate), the extra screen, and more power up top - from 60+ mph (where all Models 3 fall short).
Good reviews. Pleasantly surprised you did not mention fitment and quality issues. I see many vids and articles about fitment, squeaking and paint issues.
Thank you! I'm finishing up a 34k mile review where I address quality issues (they are relatively minor). I'm hoping to have that video up by Saturday.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee Look fwd to seeing it. I’ve have 2 S’s and now an X. Looking at the Plaid as a the ultimate daily. But keeping a couple muscle cars with soul! 😊
Just put a deposit on this exact car. Can't wait! Really wanted Ultra Red but got a good deal on a Deep Blue one with 3k miles. Would you or have you put PPF or any coating on it? Thoughts on that?
Great to hear! If you plan to drive on the highway frequently, I recommend getting PPF on the entire front end. It so easy to drive fast in this car. My front end has gotten beat up with sand and pebbles kicked up from other vehicles. The rear fender area in front of the rear wheels will get beat up from launching or accelerating hard. Even though there is a small strip of PPF there from the factory, I recommend covering more of that area. I did not get PPF because I didn't think I would hold onto the car for long....I've now had it for more than 2 years and 52k miles. If I were to trade for new or lower mileage plaid down the road, I would get PPF.
How do you feel about the overall build quality? I currently have a bmw X3M competition and I’m really happy with the build quality of the car. The paint, panel gaps, interior, etc. I’m most likely going to get a model s plaid but I’m worried about the stereotype that teslas have in regard to build quality and attention to detail.
The panel alignment of my car (both interior and exterior) is not perfect but I was ok with it because the car has been reliable, it works great, and the service experience was ok (this is no longer the case as I don't think my local service center can handle the large number of cars in area). It seems that some people who have taken delivery of new Model Ss in 2024 have had some problems with their cars and I've noticed really bad panel alignment on a new model Y that a friend had recently picked up so buying used (where you can spend some time inspecting and driving the car before buying) may be the way to go. As a former BMW owner (last one was a 2023 M2), I can confidently say that the overall build quality of my Plaid is not as good. The paint quality is on par - it is holding up as well as my previous F80 M3s. With that said, the driving experience and usability of the car are good enough for me to overlook the less than perfect build quality. Just curious, are you also considering the Porsche Taycan and/or Audi E-Tron GT? To me (and probably everyone else), they have better build quality and a nicer interior. However, I value the more efficient packaging of the Plaid, one pedal driving, FSD, and not having to deal with routine maintenance for my daily driver.
Hi Joe, Have you received the Text Size software update on your Model S Plaid? I purchased my 2023 back in June, I'm now on software version 2023.20.9 but still don't have this feature. According to Tesla this feature is currently NOT available on ANY Model S, ONLY on Model's 3 & Y. I can't see why this would be so I hope someone here has received this updated software feature. Pleas let me know, thanks!
Hi Stephen, my Model S Plaid does not have the option to change Text Size. I'm guessing that they haven't released this update for the S and X yet because of the additional screens. I would find this update helpful.
Enjoyed watching the owners perspective or this car. Having driven it before, I agree that the plaid acceleration never gets old. From a content creation perspective, are you using the sabinetek smart Mike? I have the same audio blips that occur like in your video. I fixed it by using the filmic legacy app with the external microphone attached to it.
Thanks for the feedback and tip on the mic. In this video I was using a Lewinner bluetooth mic paired to my Galaxy S10 phone. I learned that the app for the bluetooth mic was implementing stability control that made the video choppy. I ended up switching to a DJI USB mic which resolved that and other audio problems as it no longer required a dedicated app. I've since switched to a GoPro Hero11 Black for recording (still using the DJI USb mic) - I'm finding it to be much more stable than a smart phone.
wow jersey dude thats wassup I always been a fan of the plaid its pretty fast which alot of peope dont know its good on brakes and you will have to catch a breath to get used to it and be responsible ad it has alot of options on this car which alot of people dont know about when it comes down to electric cars.
I just switched from a 2020 M3LR to a Model S LR. Do it. The biggest improvement you will notice, but not really mentioned in this video, is the level of luxury and how much more premium the Model S is. The M3 feels like an econobox compared to the MS. You are boss driving a Model S refresh, and a regular Joe driving the M3.
Good perspective on the plaid. The acceleration on these cars never gets old. Do you have any paint protection done? Looks like you have taken good care of it.
Thanks for the feedback! I did not have any aftermarket paint protection applied. The paint on the front bumper has held up well to my highway driving compared to my previous 2021 Toyota Supra and 2016 BMW M3. The rear quarter panels right behind the rear door have taken a beating from rock chips. I installed mud flaps at around 10k miles to prevent further damage to that area. I'd recommend installing mud flaps on any 2021+ Model S long range and plaid to help prevent rock chips to the rear quarter panels from the front tires.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee , thanks. May I ask what brand mud flaps you put on the car? I have a black ‘23 long range and don’t want the rock chips to ruin the paint. Thanks again.
@mebeingU2 I have the OEM mudflaps. They often scrape the ground (I drive in low mode) - I don't mind the scraping, but the noise bothers some people. The RPM Tesla mudflaps look like a good alternative.
@@AikihermPRS awesome to hear about your incoming Model S Long Range! What color did you choose? I'm in the process of filing a 34k mile update video. I hope to have that video posted by the end of the week.
Thanks for the feedback! The recent price drop of $21k on the Model S Plaid here in the US is great for buyers. The used prices have dropped considerably as well - there are a few 2021 Model S Plaids going for slightly above $90k in my area.
Hi Joe, just stumbled upon your channel by chance. One quick question, for daily driving and long highway trips, how much more comfortable is the S compared to the 911.
Hello, the Model S is significantly more comfortable that my 997.2 Carrera 4S in the sense that the drive is more relaxed - especially during highway driving. I daily drove a 997.1 Carrera S for a year (I put ~35k miles on it that year) - it was fun but I found that I was exhausted after commuting 80 miles (one way). I primarily use my current 911 around town and don't get tired from it. For a sports car, the 911 is relatively comfortable, is easy to get in and out, has enough space, and good enough visibility to be a daily driver. The Model S has a softer suspension with more suspension travel, roomier interior, and softer seats that make it "better" for long distance highway driving. The newer generation 911s are even more comfortable (I had a 991). With that being said, if something bad were to happen to my Model S, I would just use my 911 as my daily driver.
I plan to post a 30k mile update within the next 2 weeks. I've only had 3 repairs thus far, all covered under warranty: 1) The passenger door panel had some of the material bubble in the storage area, 2) the charge door wasn't closing properly, and 3) the dampener or spring for the center console lid broke. The car has been very reliable thus far.
Great video! I own a 2020 M3P and love how sporty it is. I’m considering a 2023 Model S (long range) versus upgrading to a ‘23 M3P. Worth the extra cost? Thanks!
Thanks! The Model 3 has a quicker steering and is more nimble because is smaller and weighs less. The Model S provides more range, more passenger and cargo space, a fancier interior (with cooled and heated seats) and subjectively, I think it looks better. If those aspects of the Model S appeal to you and you are ok with losing some handling, I think it would be good to consider the Model S. If you they don't matter that much, then save your money and go with the 2023 Model 3 Performance. The extra range and acceleration of the Model S makes it worth it for me (I often drive long distances). The Model S is a better highway cruiser.
Nice work on the video! What % tint did you install on all windows including windshield (if installed). Also which MFG mud flaps did you go with, they look good as well. Thanks
Thank you! The door windows and rear window have 20% tint. The windshield doesn't have any tint. The mud flaps are OEM Tesla. I will make a video about them as they scrape quite a bit; i'd like to put more information about them out there as I couldn't find much info before I purchased them.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee Good to know, I might have to look for shorter aftermarket ones then. I think RPM Tesla sells no drill Mud Flaps that are shorter then the stock ones. I'm going to check out their video again and see. Thanks!
@@stephen2220 The RPM Tesla flaps look good - it is nice that they cover more of the fender and offer an option for the rear tires. I was concerned about their impact on range but I may give them a try. I had similar mudflaps on my Model 3 and they kept the side of my car and bumper pretty clean when driving on wet and snow covered roads.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee The great thing about using mud flaps on the Model S is that they don't detract from the beautiful looks of the car at all and the protection they offer is a definite plus.
I'm not aware of any current plans for a plaid+. There was talk of one a few years ago, but that plan was cancelled. Maybe the release of the Lucid Air Sapphire will resurrect plans for a plaid+.
I would choose the Model Y Performance. I prefer to have the latest tech and more warranty coverage. Also, I prefer the refreshed Model S; a pre-2021 doesn't appeal to me as much.

Nice work. (No Easter eggs!?) I had a first run P85D in 2015. Back when people thought it was incredibly futuristic and it caused me ridiculous amounts of conversations wherever I went. (Pasadena, CA). I never didn't floor it, at every stop. It begged to be pegged! (TM) But today, my 2020 Hylander hybrid platinum is so much better! I'd never go back to *speed* over *quality* . Sadly, I feel a tad embarrassed for Plaid owners and that interior. Ick! The P85D (that first model) was fantastic. Tactile controls can not be replaced by an iPad. My experience. Lastly, why do people feel compelled to key Teslas today? That's why Musk had to add 360° cameras.! Bliss friends!
The interior of the 2021 and 2022 cars is entirely new. I agree that the previous interior was pretty bad, but the new one is actually pretty nice, and this is coming from someone who just sold his Lexus LS.
Thanks for the feedback! It is neat to hear about your experience with the Model S when it was still new and novel. My wife and I also have a 2019 Lexus RX450h - the build quality of the Lexus is noticeably better than the Tesla (as expected), but we both prefer the interior of the plaid - the layout is simpler, the controls are more intuitive, and it is a little more comfortable for us. I don't know why people choose to key Teslas - fortunately, I haven't heard of it being a recent problem where I live (knock on wood). One of my upcoming videos will be on my experience owning an EV, a hybrid, and a traditional gas vehicle (we currently have one of each). Given your comment, you'll probably like my conclusion on which one I'd recommend for most people.
Owner of a 2019 Model 3 Performance and a 2021 Highlander Hybrid Platinum. Frankly we’ve had a bout the same amount of issues with our Toyota. Just drove the Highlander today after being in the Tesla for a few months and the Toyota absolutely feels old and antiquated. The future is here folks. You can embrace it or resist it but we’re quickly reaching a tipping point. EV’s are going to dominate moving forward.
If the the iPad over physical buttons all day everyday. The flexibility, update-ability, configurability is endless by comparison. It’s an iPhone vs a blackberry.
With the 21" wheels that I have on my car, the rated range is 348 miles. I primarily drive on the highway at relatively high speeds (range goes down noticeably above 70 - 75 mph). With my driving style and typical routine (160 mile round trip commute), I see about 270 miles out of a charge - that is calculated by the number of miles driven divided by the percent that my battery is charged back up after the drive to the preset limit. I've seen charge rates as high as 700 - 800 miles/hour when I first plug the car into a super charger.
Also cost this much money , should have Night Vision camera as S class has . When I have Tesla S I will install one , only cost $1,300 on Ebay and just wire into the car ! Also a extra pair of Rally road fog and high beam refletor lights !
I never had a problem with visibility at night. Although the car doesn't have night vision, I can actually see objects on the screen that is in front of the steering wheel (not that one would stare that screen instead of the road, lol).
Thanks for the feedback! I was surprised by how shaky the video was. I have since bought a new phone and it is even worse, lol. I purchased a stabilizer gimble that I plan to test out this weekend - I hope that solves the issue. If not, I'll try an iPhone as you suggest.

This video was filmed with my old Samsung Galaxy S10. I didn't realize it at the time, but the software for my bluetooth mic had really poor image stabilization that made video worse than with stabilization off. I had assumed it was my phone. I now have 26k miles on my car: I've been to the service center 4 times: 2x for tires (one time to change a flat and the second time to change the other 3 tires because they weren't in stock when I had the flat repaired, 1x for a windshield replacement (a rock cracked it), and 1x to replace the passenger side front door panel because the material in the bottle holder area was separating (replaced under warranty). I've had mobile service come out to align a rear door handle that was not going in smoothly and to replace the charge port when the charge port door wasn't opening and closing properly (both covered under warranty and fixed during the same visit). Personally, if the nearest service center is more than 100 miles away, I'd hold off, however, it might be worth getting opinions from other Tesla owners in your area as the mobile service in the area could provide sufficient service.
Yes, you can add a wireless charging pad to the car, which sits on top of the phone holder. I had an aftermarket charging pad on my 2018 Model 3 - it plugged into the USB ports and looked like it came that way from the factory. What year and model do you have? I can provide some recommendations (I'm not sponsored by anyone).
@@TheLifeofJoeLee I have a 23 S that I'm picking up on Tuesday. The center phone dock has wireless charging from stock, but I want to know if that can be disabled. No need to add anything. I just don't want my phone to start charging every time I rest it there under the screen.
@skep2 sorry, I misread your question, lol. I just pulled the phone holder up on my plaid - there is a single wire harness back there, so I think that handles both the key function and wireless charging. I wouldn't mess with that. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to disable wireless charging on this car.
@skep2 not yet. I just checked the menu and manual in case it had been added - I didn't see any info on turning off wireless charging. Though not an ideal solution, my phone won't charge on the wireless charger if the screen is facing down or if the phone is turned 180 degrees.
This past weekend they had an EV Show in my area. Lots of Tesla's and the tesla club were present. Also, a rep was there from Tesla of Orlando, FL. I got to test drive a Model S and was amazed at how fast it was. (I currently have a C8 Corvette) I'm considering a switch to a Model S or an S Plaid. Which one would you pick?
Great to hear about your experience driving a Model S! The appearance of the refreshed Model S long range and plaid are nearly identical (the plaid has a carbon fiber spoiler, plaid badge, and carbon fiber interior). The long range is rated to have ~10 - 27 more miles of range depending on the wheel configuration (i.e., 19" vs 21"). On the used market, I think the long range and plaid differ by about $15k - $20k (given the current depreciation rate, I don't recommend buying new). Is the extra motor, extra 350 HP, and shaving a second off of 0 - 60 worth that money to you? For me, the experience of a 1000+ HP car and having the dual motor set up in the rear is worth the price difference. I would buy a plaid again if I had to decide between the two. With that being said, the long range is more than enough car for daily use. If you like drag racing, the plaid is the way to go.
I typically drive with 2 hands on the steering wheel anyway, so it wasn't hard for me to get used to with the exception of making sharp turns where I had to get used to having both hands on the same end of the yoke when transitioning from one hand to the other. It took me a while to get used to the turn signals being on the yoke instead of having a turn signal stalk. I occasionally still press the wrong arrow.
It’s a love/hate thing. It looks so cool, easy to drive but, when you are in a parking situation it’s hand over hand (not realy a big deal). Very comfortable and its safer than 10 & 2 position (air bag). More comfortable racing or cruising. New cars have round as an option.
I just climbed out of an e63s. Now in a 2021 Macan Turbo. Both performance oriented, in their own way. The thing that kills my interest in the Model S Plaid, as well as in any other e-vehicle, is the huge display. I can't get over the feeling that I'm driving a laptop.
Awesome to hear about your vehicles! I know what you mean. I bought my first Tesla (a Model 3 Performance) just to try it and to see what EV ownership was all about. I personally didn't care for the large touch screen. However, I've come to appreciate having the controls and information display in one place. I have a 2023 BMW M2 on order - that car comes with a long display screen that spans half the dashboard. I don't think the huge display screen fits the character of that car, but that is where the industry is moving. The 2023 Mercedes C63S has a large center touch screen and a display screen for the instrument cluster.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee Of course, you're entirely correct, the automobile world is moving opposite my direction: e.v.'s, to wit. I'm old school. But I'm proud of it.
My car is optioned with the 21" Arachnid wheels. With the 21" wheels, the EPA rated range is 348 miles. With the 19" Tempest wheels, the EPA rated range is 396 miles as you stated.
I bet your going to be embarrassing alot of super cars , and other cars think there fast lol. I do have a question are they easier to get into the new tesla model s as opposed to the early model s? Because i think the older model s I hit my head quite a few times.
Thanks for the comment! I don't have experience with the earlier Model S's so I can't comment on how it compares. I don't have any problems getting in the car (I'm 5'7") but my 6'5" business partner has to duck his head a bit to get in without hitting his head.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee That is not only the case in the US. Its also like that in many European countries. And not only the S is expensive to insure, the other high end EV's aren't cheap either. Boils down to replacement value and if stuff needs to be repaired (or replaced) in case of a collision. All the electronics doesn't help bringing down the bill
@@mathisnotforthefaintofheart it is good to know that the higher insurance cost for EVs is not unique to the US. I'd like make a video talking about insurance costs and the cost to install a charger - that maybe helpful for people who are thinking about buying their first EV.
From 2021 to mid-2022 the used prices were essentially the same as the new MSRP. However the prices of used Teslas have since dropped with the rest of the car market. Demand has softened and Tesla has significantly ramped up production. Whether these will follow the depreciation curve of an average car will depend on whether people continue to order these from Tesla at the same rate as they have been. From a value perspective, I don't recommend buying one of these brand new. I think they are a good buy on the used market.
The shaking was caused by the stabilization feature on the wireless mic software - unfortunately, it took a few videos to figure that out. I've since bought a new wireless mic, camera, and a gimbal - future videos should (hopefully) be better.

The car has saved me a lot of time, which has freed up time to spend on other things! I no longer have to go to the gas pump (the car charges at my house). With 24k miles on the odometer, the only maintenance I had was to replace tires. I no longer have to grab a key fob as my cell phone is my car key. There is no need to warm up the car before I can push it. The car is ready to go as soon as the door is unlocked and there is no need to warm up the car before I can push it. There is no need to get the car inspected in my state (NJ) where they only do emissions testing. There are a lot of other conveniences that I had not thought about when I purchased the car that I've found to save time here and there, which adds up.
I appreciate the feedback...yes, my pronunciation needs work. I anticipate similar feedback when I review my Porsche Carrera 4S as I'm still not used to pronouncing it as por•shuh.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee Haha! No worries. I was really just messing with you, so don’t take my comment seriously. But great and thorough video though. I own the LR 2021 version and agree with all your thought on how great a car it is.
Great video CONGRATULATIONS ! Every others about Tesla S , talking just none sense B...s.. ! Nobody ever think to lether wrap this new steering wheel same as on tennis rockets ! ????
The interior is more sporty than luxurious. I agree. With the exception of the alcantara headliner which is typically in $100k+ cars, I think the interior is comparable to cars in the $80k - $90k range. It is ok at the price point of the Model S long range.
Beatiful interior. I got the cream interior((has darker piping on the seats). I have the carbon fiber dash dash/console and it is gorgeous! I hate leather. No maintenance, no cracking, and it’s soft. My 13 year old car had vegan leather and it looked new when I sold it. Easy to clean. Interior is so clean and well designed! The competition’s interior are busy, with screens, buttons, and just plain annoying!
That interior is straight out of low quality…outside of the screen and half baked steering wheel, Tesla did a terrible job in differentiating it from a regular S. 130k should get you more.
Totally possible to achieve the EPA rating for mileage. Everybody's definition of normal is different. Sounds like your definition of normal involves quite a lot of spirited driving 😉 Thanks for the video.
Yes, most of my driving is "spirited". I agree that it is possible to achieve the rated range / mileage - I just don't have the patience to drive that way 😀
Although an EV suits my needs and desires for a car, I acknowledge that they are not right nor affordable for everyone. I will be putting out a video soon on reasons why I wouldn't recommend an EV. I've talked people out of purchasing EVs and they were glad that I did. I also have a traditional gas engine car and a hybrid.
I am not rich, just saved what I earned. We work hard for these toys, some people are given and some people take (welfare). A Tesla is definitely not an economy car. That's what great about this country, if you want a bigger house, a nicer car we are allowed to get it! I worked for my toys. (no it is not a necessity or will it ever pay for itself, unless you have a lot of solar and drive a lot! But once you drive one it's easy to get hooked! I just couldn't see myself in a Toyota Corolla.
Teslas really are great daily drivers.
They blend practically and performance so well, it’s kind of amazing.
One of the most honest REAL OWNER review on TH-cam
Agreed on all points. My first car was a 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible and despite owning everything from a Camry to a twin-turbo Supra to an E36 BMW, I was always left with a love of comfortable over-powered large luxury sedans. A couple months ago I sold my Model 3 Performance to a friend and replaced it with a Model S Plaid and couldn't be happier. It's not a flickable canyon-carver, but I have other vehicles for that. The Plaid is my ideal daily driver.
It’s also an epic road trip car.
The model S has timeless looks. Would've been nice is the rear were even a little wider, maybe about 1cm on each side. And a little higher rear fenders. I love the aggressive stance.
The rear is dated asf. Those tail lights look like a ford mondeo from 2012.
@@iCozzh proportions are sleeker on the S. Simple design, but still timeless. Do you think Porsche front ends are dated as well?
How many miles do you have on it?
@@ericn3221 I have ~24k miles on it.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee
81 cars and I have the list of what I paid, what I sold for and time owned.
Love this Tesla plaid s .car here . Congrats on ya getting yours . Great blue color too.
Red also pretty nice
The model 3 performance fell a little short on acceleration on the highway? It literally accelerates faster then 95% of cars on the road.
once you actually get going, it is not as fast/or faster than most decent performance cars.
@@topgunm I have driven 5 of them, all the same.
Just go onto the tesla motor club and ask current owners. I have put over 1000 miles on a refresh.
Did you wrap the car? or is that the deep blue metallic paint option?
The car is not wrapped. It has the deep blue metallic paint option.
I owned 2020 M3LR. Thinking to buy S Plaid. Thanks for making the videos

Very informative. Thanks for sharing your video. Going to order my Model S Plaid now.
Thanks for the feedback! The recent price drop of $21k on the Model S Plaid here in the US is great for buyers. The used prices have dropped considerably as well - there are a few 2021 Model S Plaids going for slightly above $90k in my area.
This is truly a good looking car.
Thanks for the comment!
Comparing apple with potatoes
Very nice and comprehensive review.
Thank you!
What about reliability? Hows it been holding up? Debating on a used one but dont know enough about Tesla reliability
The Model S is a better highway cruiser.
yeah, great review, from an owner, that's cool ! keeping the dream alive until I get mine

Thank you for the feedback! Yes, I'll film a review my 911 soon!
Does anyone know if there will be a model S plaid +? I’m on my 3rd model S. Great car.
I'm not aware of any current plans for a plaid+. There was talk of one a few years ago, but that plan was cancelled. Maybe the release of the Lucid Air Sapphire will resurrect plans for a plaid+.
If you had a $50k budget would you get a newer model Y performance or a few year old Model S 100D with more miles as a daily ?
I would choose the Model Y Performance. I prefer to have the latest tech and more warranty coverage. Also, I prefer the refreshed Model S; a pre-2021 doesn't appeal to me as much.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee thanks Joe ! Appreciate all of your responses, and your videos are great.

But today, my 2020 Hylander hybrid platinum is so much better!

How do you find the range matches up with the rated range of 396miles? What is the fastest super charging you've seen?
With the 21" wheels that I have on my car, the rated range is 348 miles. I primarily drive on the highway at relatively high speeds (range goes down noticeably above 70 - 75 mph). With my driving style and typical routine (160 mile round trip commute), I see about 270 miles out of a charge - that is calculated by the number of miles driven divided by the percent that my battery is charged back up after the drive to the preset limit. I've seen charge rates as high as 700 - 800 miles/hour when I first plug the car into a super charger.
I’m getting me a Tesla this year ❤❤❤❤
Also cost this much money , should have Night Vision camera as S class has .
Thanks for such a good video, i would suggest to use different camera or at least an iPhone because the shaky video made me nauseous lol
Thanks for the feedback! I was surprised by how shaky the video was. I have since bought a new phone and it is even worse, lol. I purchased a stabilizer gimble that I plan to test out this weekend - I hope that solves the issue. If not, I'll try an iPhone as you suggest.

Any issues with the tires getting bald fast?
My right rear tire wore through the cords on the inner edge at around 18k miles. All 4 tires showed signs of negative camber wear. I drive the car in low mode. I haven't noticed any vibration in the front end.

I don't live near a service center. Would you consider that a deal breaker for this car? How's the reliability been so far?
How far is the nearest service center from you?
Anyone know if the Plaid's coming to the UK?
Do any owners know if the wireless charging can easily be disabled?
@@TheLifeofJoeLee got it thank you. Safe to assume nothing on the menu to disable it
@skep2 not yet. I just checked the menu and manual in case it had been added - I didn't see any info on turning off wireless charging. Though not an ideal solution, my phone won't charge on the wireless charger if the screen is facing down or if the phone is turned 180 degrees.
Looks awesome 👌
Bought or loan
I bought this car - it is my daily driver.
I wonder how did you get used to that weird steering wheel?
I typically drive with 2 hands on the steering wheel anyway, so it wasn't hard for me to get used to with the exception of making sharp turns where I had to get used to having both hands on the same end of the yoke when transitioning from one hand to the other. It took me a while to get used to the turn signals being on the yoke instead of having a turn signal stalk. I occasionally still press the wrong arrow.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee "I occasionally still press the wrong arrow."...Well....🤔
It’s a love/hate thing.

Thanks for the comment! Insurance on both Teslas that I've owned were ~50% more than for an equivalently priced gas car. I was surprised by this.
@@TheLifeofJoeLee That is not only the case in the US. Its also like that in many European countries. And not only the S is expensive to insure, the other high end EV's aren't cheap either. How’s the depreciation?
From 2021 to mid-2022 the used prices were essentially the same as the new MSRP. However the prices of used Teslas have since dropped with the rest of the car market. Demand has softened and Tesla has significantly ramped up production. Whether these will follow the depreciation curve of an average car will depend on whether people continue to order these from Tesla at the same rate as they have been. From a value perspective, I don't recommend buying one of these brand new. I think they are a good buy on the used market.

The interior is more sporty than luxurious. I agree. With the exception of the alcantara headliner which is typically in $100k+ cars, I think the interior is comparable to cars in the $80k - $90k range. It is ok at the price point of the Model S long range.
