  • I see some debate here and there regarding the value of the Tesla Model S Plaid compared to the Model S Long Range. In the video I cover, should you buy the Tesla Model S Plaid or Model S Long Range? Enjoy!

I personally own the long range version. As a point of disclosure, I had the money to buy the Plaid if I so chose. But honestly, it just wasn’t worth it to me. The LR is fast enough for me as is. The Plaid is certainly faster. But for me it was past the point of diminishing returns. I have been so happy with my LR. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned.

LR or Plaid, there's no doubt the new Model S is a terrific car; and for most people the LR is certainly the better buy.

30-40k for a 1 second reduction in 0-60 wasn't worth it for me. I value the extra range much more. On top of that I keep my model s on sport mode so I would never make use of the plaid's speed.

Need a follow up on whether Plaid is worth the now $20K difference. Big improvement from $30K. And you can spend another $20K and get the carbon brake kit from Tesla, so that's a new factor too.

I've been considering this. I think there's that raw desire to have the best version of something that pulls at us to buy the plaid, but honestly I think as you said, and I'd go even further not only is it not really worth it for 98% of drivers, but probably a waste of money. I've never been on a track, and I'm not really sure I'm going to change that anytime soon, so I think the plaid is just unnecessary at that point. I never really liked the wood look inside cars myself, so the only thing that annoys me is since the plaid came out, they took out the carbon fiber option and made it plaid only.

I have a Plaid but would rather just get the Long Range if I wasn't impatient. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere you really can't use that 1020 hp on city or suburban roads. You'll have to baby it if you're at stop lights because gapping everyone feels rude for how powerful it is

We need unfiltered opinions from actual car owners, without them having to be held accountable for decisions people take (or the creators being afraid of being wrong to some extent). Model S LR 1/4 mile is 10.7 at 128-130 which is already in league with many supercars. I have a '22 M3P right now and just drove the SLR today. I found it to be every bit as fun to drive as my 3P, with more luxury and space to stretch out. I loved it. I'll buy the S at some point in the near future but I'm not sure if I'll go for the Plaid or just get the LR. My M3P is still plenty fast to put a smile on my face every time I drive it, and it's already quicker than nearly everything on the road. I'm not taking it to a drag strip, I drive around town and the occasional short road trip.

model 3 performance is still slower than the model S base to the 1/4. The model S base can hit the quarter mile in less than 11sec consistently. The Model 3 performance has issue doing it in less than 11.5 or so. Still very fast but the base model S can hit it in 10.8 or 10.9

The Plaid is really known for its high speed acceleration. Does the LR still pull as hard in the high speed as it does in the low speed? My Plaid above 60 almost pulls harder than it does below 60. The M3P tends to start running out of steam above 100. I could not find a definitive answer regarding acceleration on the LR above 100.

    • @shrimplyfantastic

I can’t say for sure since I haven’t driven the plaid, but the LR really pulls hard from 60 and up. Not as much as the plaid, I think its 60-120 mph time is something like. 8 seconds or so, compared to the plaid at like, 4 seconds. But it’s more than enough in my opinion

60-130 in long range is in the 7.5s range. Compare that to 12.0s plus for performance model 3 and the P100d was only 9.5s range. For reference this is similar to a hellcat red eye with 800 hp for 60-130. I would say that speaks volumes for the car and the 0-60 is a bit neutered
