Ya those AC compressors must suck.. went out on my wifes 15 forester and my 14 forester . Luckily covered in warranty but I think theres a new TSB for them. Still not a full recall so not free

So excited about these videos. I have a 2012 Impreza with 70K that has been great so far. I also have a 2019 Crosstrek. They use most of the same parts and I have gotten used to basic maintenance on a Subaru. I am really looking forward to the CVT fluid video because my Impreza has the original fluid and I am ready to change it.

Nothing against the older ones, I just wanted something with a bit of warranty lol. I plan on keeping it as long as possible, though, so I've been doing tons of research... Great Video as usual. Picking up a 2015 Premium with 92K and super clean CarFax, very well maintained no accidents. It was also a one owner that took it to the dealer for everything. It's to replace my kids 2001 Forester with 220K (nothing wrong with the Forester but will be going into the workforce soon. I want him to have something I don't have to worry about) I'm changing pretty much the same stuff plus the Oxygen sensor. I tend to do that between 90 - 100K for peace of mind. Looking forward to getting my hands on it
Just picked up an '03 Forester with just under 170,000 on it. Live in MN rust belt. This car was Zebarted so it's clean for the year.

Seller thought the head gaskets were bad. Nope, lower rad hose clamp failure!
I sold my 1997 Outback last year with 120000 miles on it. You have a true love for these cars. Missed my car so much I wanted to buy another Outback. Couldn’t get one, but lucked out and got a 2022 Ascent.

I did this a year ago! bought a 2013 Crosstrek from Missouri and drove it home to the west coast. $8000 for with 130k miles at the time. CVT is noisy and the miles put it past the extended coverage. Plan is to do a 2015+ WRX swap soon
Ive had that same issue with the leather seat being folded down for months with a lego pieces stuck there. I thought waiting will take care of it, probably would- but it just annoyed me too much, So i took a hair dryer, blowed heat and massaged it for a few minutes and all indentations were gone.
Looking forward to all videos on this car! I’d also be curious to see if you find any steering rack issues... my 2017 Legacy with 65k has been knocking a little for some time now, but my mechanic says everything is tight and still safe.
You are amazing sir, I bought a 2017 trek back in august, have but 11k miles on it already and do enjoy trying to do all of the work on my cars as much as possible. Subaru's have different engines than most cars so learning all the quirks when working on them is amazing. Really looking forward to this series.

Greatly improved in recent years, it was the early CVTs that gave them a poor reputation. Go to Edmunds for owner reviews of any vehicle by make, model and year.
I've never noticed these cars. I'm 52 years old. My new one is coming in March.

Interesting you mentioned about the LCA bush
On my liberty GT at 96000kms I swapped out the front LCA bushes, front end links and front shocks. Had a front knock. I believe maybe the bilstein shocks possibly gone. They were 850aud a corner (Bilstein would not stock them as Subaru had propierty)!!! Kyb shocks were 200/e and feel great! No more knocks!

Craig - better watch the oil consumption. It ruined the cat converters in my 2013 outback at around 130k miles.
Try running 5-30 high mileage it made a huge difference in my 2.0’s oil issue
Wow, good thorough job. Plus you got that 2013 for $22.000 less than I paid for mine, and you even scored a sunroof and Nav. They wanted $2000 more for that package so I opted out. I wish I had you as my mechanic for my 2014 XV Limited. Bought new in March of that year so now it is exactly 6 years old. Just had to spring for rear wheel bearings little over 60,000 miles because they were going out making a terrible "can't live with this" noise, at a cost of over $1100.00 at the mercy of the Subaru OEM parts which always seem way higher than other parts but I was stuck to either do it, trade it or live with it til it breaks. Nice to hear you explain so well as we only get minimum descriptions from the service writer when he comes back to tell us the sorry news of what it is going to cost. I will look forward to your future videos on these repairs you mentioned so I can know ahead of time what to expect. Thank you for your expertise and care to do these videos!

Mr Subaru, you sir are passionate and a gentleman👍. That was a great mechanical appraisal of the car. Subaru parts prices are certainly fair to low👍. You should've added a dollar figure for your labor for all those repairs, just to inform the non mechanic viewers. And that parts with labor total also tells us why the purchase price was so low. It's just routine age and milage maintainence which is not wasted because the general body condition is so good. Thanks for your sober expert presentations 👍👍👍

Replace the cvt fluid 100% If this was dealer maintained then they probably never replaced it because its stated as lifetime in their manual. My dealership almost scammed me $3600 because my Transmission Temp light was on. Their tech listed "transmission fluid was black" , so with my common sense, i replaced the fluid and right when i turned the car on the light went away. 30k miles later and still no problems. Also clean the filter out with brake fluid, its mesh wire so its fine.
Just a fyi, the total repair bill for my 2012 impreza one owner was $6700. LIke i said, all i did was change fluid for $100 and its been 30k miles it runs like new with no lights on. Dealers are very scammy!

Nice Subie! You wouldn’t even know if it was the highest mileage and cheapest Crosstrek out there. I myself am running a 2.5 engine 2012 Outback with 87,000 miles limited trim with the navigation system. Hope mine looks as good as yours after it reaches that type of mileage. I bought mine as a one owner and no accidents as well.
I got a 2010 outback premium 2.5l auto with a 104k miles a few months ago for 5 grand. 2 owner car local to me, first owner was the dealer for 1500 miles prob a loaner, whatever. It got the recalls taken care of early in its life because it was owned by the dealer lol.
Idk, i live in pa, n this thing has minimal surface rust on some of the rear components, but literally zero rust on the front half. None, not a spec which is absolutely insane for pa.
These cars were built amazingly. This is the reason id pay up a little more for a outback, thwy put kore into em then the others for sure.
Everything is simple to maintain.
It had the timing belt n pump replaced when i got it as well.
I replaced the starter and battery last month, the starter can easily be taken out with removing nothing from the engine bay. The lower nut (its 1 14mm bolt on top 1 12mm nut for power, one 14mm nut for the lower) is best way to get to that lower nut is from under it, you'll also have clear view if the 12mm nut oh and a little electrical connector, just slides out.
I did the spark plugs, diff fluids, these r awesome to change the diff fluid, the front has a little plastic rubbery spark plug size hollow plug thing that comes right out (it used to be where a dip stick for that fluid was) and make for a simple fluid fill on the front diff.
Anyway, these things are a breeze to work on.
I wish i had a second car, id fully rebuild the engine one day just to do it as this is absolutely the perfect engine to be a first rebuild project for sure.
I bought my 2014 Crosstrek Limited clean title, great shape mechanically and looks at a dealer auction for $9500 with 24k on it. My buddy took me that has a license dealer auction for resale. So I was the highest bidder (my buddy bid for me) and little that they know that I was there to buy my daily car and not buying it for resale. Your head gaskets are leaking. EJ engines leak from head gaskets, FB engines leak from everywhere except for the head gaskets lol
Mr. Subaru , you have a subaru problem. Ha! But that's a good problem to have. I also bought a 14 limited forester for 5k recently even tho I didnt need another car. Just needed new bushings and ball joints and a lateral link. Lucked out! Your videos helped me do the front control arms
Just use the carfax car care app and add the vehicle as yours then click on service history and it shows everything they have done its free way to check

2022 - picking up soon a 2013 Jap import XV. Concerned that failed first WOF in the ORC but going to ask for record of what was done to pass. I test drove and was good. The stop/start took me by surprise but seemed a good vehicle at 122k mileage. New Zealand location.

In Canada the hourly working cost is from C$95 - C$110. per hour! --------- Ouch!
The most interesting for me is the cost of maintenance in EUA. Extremely accessible compared to Brazil. Here if you have a complex engine or gear issue is better to sell the car to scrapyards because the parts are so expensive!!
200,000 + miles. I would do what he is doing and have a worry free car for a number of years. Considering the low acquisition cost, these repairs are worth doing.
Low property taxes, insurance, payments, etc too.

Thanks man, great video. Can you give a rough estimate on what you or the dealer would have charged for labor on these repairs? In general do you find Subarus need repairs more than a Honda or less? Or does it just depend on owner, conditions, etc? And lastly, are the costs of repairs & parts comparable to Honda repairs? Thanks for passin on the knowledge, and keep saying crossTRACK, who the hell cares lol. Besides it's obviously just your southern accent comin thru, so let it shine!

My father was USAF. We were sent to Europe for 3 deployments. There were a rash of American cars catching fire after the 6 month shipping on a boat from America to Europe. Turns out, when they stored the cars on the boat, they removed the batteries. When they unloaded the cars, they put the batteries back in, but wouldn't strap them in. Germany has the Autobahn, where there isn't a speed limit. So, when you have an unsecured battery, getting all charged up doing 120mph, and you hit the slightest bump, as you said, the contacts would short across the hood, and start a fire.

I have now 135,000 miles on my 2013 Legacy. The last 10,000 miles have been more than maintenance but before that no issues. In the last 10,000 we replaced the front suspension (springs/shocks), rear wheel bearings, front control rods, master brake cylinder, and engine coils (6 of them, four were cracked). Besides this, it has been fine. Nothing to end the life of the car.
I love my 2010 subie outback 2.5 with 255,000 on it no oil issues I use subie OEM parts or moog that's all
Does that mean my 2012 with 127k has alot of life left? I also have the 2.5. So far have had no issue at all with the car
The valve spring recall is another engine out procedure, so that could be a good reason for those pry bar scrapes. But, given the mileage, I would expect the CVT has been replaced as well. I have yet to see an original CVT last much past 150k without chain slip issues. But if the previous owner has been getting the fluid changed regularly, it is possible that it's original. I'd be very interested in finding out.

My brother's 2011 Outback 2.5i Limited is at 200k miles with the original TR690. They can last quite a while.
@@MrSubaru1387 Yeah, those original tr690s that they were putting in their normal cars are beasts and that's not too surprising. Some would say they were overbuilt for the application... But I think that if a trans isn't failing, it's just right. 😂
Now they only use them for the 6 cyl and turbo cars.
I drive a 2015 Subaru legacy premium daily. Current mileage 225,340. Spark plugs and wheel hubs/bearings is all it's needed. Transmission is excellent as is the rest of the car.
@Billie Pistocco that's very possible. Maybe the bigger ones need the extra torque of a 6 cyl or turbo to work "right" in the long term.
U do realize the tr690 is a cvt right?
Its the only trans avail for the 2.5l auto for that year.

You need to get some alkaline degreaser for the steering wheel. I've cleaned some really junky ones and it removes it kinda easily.
i have the 2016 with eye sight thought i got a great deal at 17,5 my mileage was 42k but makes me feel great that i have another 150k to go and it will be in very good condition. i love the car.

Just got one for 5700 last week. 2013, 154000 miles, clean title. It had a transmission issue but changing the sensor (total cost $390) covered it. Seems so far so good, but time will tell.

@@Herecomesthedreamerr mine kinda does this, but I've found if you let the cvt warm up before driving, and drive slow at the start, it's much better. Gonna change my fluid soon

My 2014 Crosstrek 2.0i Premium CVT went about 80k miles without a hitch (regular oil changes, rotors, pads, new AGM battery). Then at 80k miles, I was driving on the highway and the low oil pressure light came on. I was like great. Got off and went to an Advanced Auto Parts and put in about .9 quarts of 0W-20 oil. Drove it back to MD while keeping an eye out. The light came back on a few days later. Scheduled an appointment with the local dealer. Turns out the cam carrier seal was leaking, they had to pull the motor and reseal it. A week later, I got a CEL and the engine went into some form of a limp mode. I pulled out my OBD scanner, said it was an issue with the cam lobe. Took it back to the dealer, they had to pull the motor again to replace the defective cam lobe. A few weeks later, I noticed steering on full lock, it had clicking noises. Brought it back in, the dealer changed both front axles. Then another few weeks, I noticed the rear end was behaving oddly under heavy braking or acceleration in cornering. They replaced both rear wheel hubs. Even after the cam lobe and cam carrier reseal, it kept burning ~.7 quarts of oil every 800-1000 miles. Then right at 97k miles, I noticed the AC wasn't functioning right. I brought it back in, and turns out the condenser had went bad and they found the control arm bushings were basically toast. They replaced the condenser and the bushings and did an alignment. Unfortunately will the constant bringing of the car back and nearing the 100k mile warranty, I traded it in and just ended up leasing a 2019 Outback for my fiance. What truly annoyed me was for 80k miles, it had zero issues. The OEM Panasonic battery did die after about 3 years, which was alright. The OEM Subaru brakes were meh quality, so I went to Stoptech slotted rotors and ceramic pads. But nothing prepared me for the constant trips to the dealer.
I honestly think Subaru does make quality cars, but they definitely need more maintenance than a Toyota or Honda. But their all wheel drive setup is far superior and the AWD vehicles don't drive like boats. I think the CVT's are a bit pokey but it has allowed Subaru to raise their gas mileage to be competitive with 2WD competitors in their respective classes. I recently just ditched my '05 Outback 3.0R as 190k miles was creeping up and either the rear differential is going bad or the driveshaft is (rear end makes a shuddering noise in low gears/low rpms, at highway speeds it goes away).
If you haven't found service history yet, the engine was out for the valve spring recall you mentioned earlier. And typically if your witness marks on are on top its going to be from an engine removal.
I've got the info. Original engine, never replaced. Original CVT, had a valve body replacement at 171k miles, but that was it.
Hello my friend. Love your videos. I was wondering if I could ask a question. I'm looking at a Crosstrek 2013. The only said they changed the engine and started getting P0021, and P2092 codes. The dealership told him he needs to change the ECM. He is currently driving the car around. Any thoughts
I’m catching up, my 2016 WRX is sitting at 144,500 miles as I write this. Biggest issue was a failed release bearing at 123k, it scarred up the input shaft on the trans pretty good and I determined it was cheaper to replace the trans with a used unit than to tear into the old one, I’m not a fan of the sleeve repair kits I’ve seen, I trust them about as far as I can throw this building I’m sitting in. I’m averaging about 36k a year, looks like this owner was averaging 29k a year? Looks like this little guy served its owner pretty well indeed.

Hey man, curious on the bushings. I had to replace my front passenger wheel hub and then the lower ball joint went bad on same side because the wheel hub was so bad I’m assuming. Anyways seen cracking on bushing nothing too bad, but thought hey I’m gonna see if I can replace that too. There seemed to be no way I could get the bushing out unless I had a piece of metal the exact same width to press it out and press new one in. How did you replace the bushing?
Does the valve spring recall apply to the 2014 Legacy? I don't remember ever getting a recall notice for it, only the takata air bag recall

You should add a coolant temperature gauge, replacing the blue idiot light. I think that would be a GREAT video.

What is the normal and max oil operating temperature for this 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek ? I have the same year and vehicle, the top menu on the dash of the car will display the engine oil temperature.

If the VIN is already registered to someone else it's a real bitch to get it switched to you. My Dad had an '02 Outback that I bought from him. To add this car's VIN to my My.Subaru account required that I contact Subaru directly and explain to them that the VIN in question had been my Dad's car that I now own.

I have the European Subaru crosstrek/xv 2013, it was using 5w30 oil while it says 0w20 on the oil cap. The oil lamp was showing every month with the 5w30 but after I started using 0w20 I’ve never seen the oil lamp again
Interesting. I just had the oil changed in our 2014 Outback 2.5i yesterday. First time I myself had ever seen 0W20 motor oil. It was so thin, almost like water. I was thinking that maybe I should switch to 5W20 next time, for a thicker/higher viscosity motor oil.
No where near as many miles, but I was planning on picking up a Crosstrek with around 85k miles. So knowing what to look for with high mileage helps!
Yep I noticed my lower control arm bushing same set up just light cracking in them last time I did my brakes, i’m gonna keep watching them though I think I’m OKAY out here in California where we don’t get a lot of rain and salt and crap like that?
I had a 2013 Crosstrek, limited trim with leather, sunroof, in dash nav, no accidents,. I had to keep a quart of oil with me at all times once it went over 50k in miles. The CVT had to be replaced, thank goodness I bought the extended warranty. Once it came off warranty I had 3k in A/C repairs that motivated me to dump it. (Subaru reimbursed me for 1/2 the A/C repair). CarMax gave me 8500 for it with about 130k miles on it in the fall of 2020. I switched to Honda as ironically Subie's quality went down after GM sold their controlling interest.

Love your stiff brother! Wish I would have found you earlier. Im a 013 Crosstrek owner too, second owner of mine. I love mine currently looking for another one. Have you had to replace the Camshaft position sensor on it or any other Subies?

I have 216,000 on my 2013. Besides run through a quart of oil every 5000 miles, goes through brakes. Check the wheelbearings also. Three of mine went out around 200 K but that’s not too bad. Have fun with your project.
