Way to go Subarus! I finally got my dream Subaru Forester in 1/2021. Love it then we got a Crosstrek for my daughter to replace her 2015 Hyundai Elantra that had 140k miles and was breaking constantly after 3 transmissions she sold it to car max. I run a 2006 forester 2,5XT AT and have done so from new. I have passed 317000 kilometers recently and have changed head gaskets at 250,000 and a radiator somewhere along the line as well. As for the rest only tires, batteries, and brake pads (once). They are due soon now. I have always kept strictly to factory service schedules and utilized only factory recommended oil and air filters and other consumables. Oh yes and I changed out the front wheel bearings a fortnight ago.. When the gaskets were changed at 250,000km I was shown the bores whilst the engine was out and the factory honing marks could still be seen. Even today the engine runs super smoothly and starts first time every time. It uses up a quart oil between services every 10,000km and has done so since new without any variance. There is no better vehicle in the reliability stakes than this one and I will never buy another brand. Love my Scooby

I've got 166K miles on my 2018 Crosstrek, still running strong. Had the coil miss-fire recall service last year and the Cat and O2 sensors where changed also. Was great timing at the 130K mark
because I had 3 fuel injectors that had problems and changed all 4. Other than that, zero issues with the car. Drive 150 miles a day for my commute up and down a mountain plus
stop and go traffic. Get 30 mpg on average, more on a long trip. Great car in snow and super dependable, a perfect car for what I need. So far CVT trans is working great and haven't touched it.

Cool thing I noticed after numerous oil changes is on the Subaru blue and black filters they have number indicators to help you tighten it down the right amount. It’s numbered 1-8 and you are meant to use those indicators to tiger it down 3/4 of a turn. Super handy!

AT205 added to your oil is good for leaky seals - it really works, but the only part is you might have to do it with each oil change. But I had good results with it generally stopping many leaks. I don't think it would help your oil pan however. I recommend the Fumoto drain valve that Alan mentioned. I use Lucas too, did on my old subarus and use the new synthetic forumula for the thin synthetic oils. That older stuff thickens your oil a lot, but I see that you only use it sparingly at low strength, so probably won't hurt using it that way (which is why I am sure you don't add the whole quart).

Agreed sir, my wife has a 2020 accent touring, the first out of warranty oil change. I stopped by the Subaru stealership for a filter and drain bolt, they supplied me with the filter (blue) and a 17mm drain bolt (silver), the OEM was 14mm (black hex).
Perhaps they (Subaru) figured, let’s put a bigger hex then the transmission drain plug.

Not bad! I'm surprised to see a CVT go that long, even with work. I'm still skeptical of their durability/longevity. No issues at all with the often derided 4EAT in my 2007 Legacy 2.5i Limited. At 171k and change on the odometer, I'm looking at a car that's not going to make 200k though unless I replace the head gaskets for a second time, control arms, at least one set of wheel bearings, exhaust, and likely some other things (like valve cover gasket probably). Starting to see some rust bubbles around the rear wheel well on an otherwise clean body is sort of what changed my mindset to start thinking about replacement vs dumping more money into it.

    • Check under body for damage
    • Test coolant, inspect hoses and clamps
    • Inspect engine and cabin air filters - replace if necessary
    • Wheel alignment (recommended)*

Just blew my engine (Rod) on my 2013 Crosstrek. Had the car since new. Had the lower engine replaced under warranty, oil consumption at 90,000, and the valve spring recall done at 130,000 miles. Had to replace the transmission valve body at 100,000 miles and replaced all of the wheel bearing and struts at 205,000 miles. As said the rod in the rear drivers side broke at 224,585 miles and that is the end of the car. I got my use out of it. I made the mistake of letting the Subaru dealer change my oil in my Crosstrek last year (it was a freebie). When I did the next change myself, I found they had cranked the drain plug so 'effing tight, I was afraid they'd stripped the threads. I had to use a 3 foot cheater bar to remove it. Fortunately no damage but dang! So it's not just overtightening the oil filter...the plug can also be overdone! About time to change the oil on my STI (2019). They said it wasn’t burning much oil, but now I’m having to add 1 qt every 2200 miles in the winter. Changed PCV. No effect. Mileage has dropped from 33mpg to 30mpg (as claimed by the dash). Blackstone oil analysis pending, but think I’ll switch to 5w30 to see how it affects consumption

I have the ‘14 Impreza with the same drivetrain. I’m running into the CVT valve body issues at 110k miles and I’m pretty disappointed. For a company that prides itself in its reputation of reliability, Subaru really should have addressed the trans issues with a recall rather than extending the warranty.

On my 3.6l, the MPG shown on the computer is always about 1mpg high compared to what I calculate out. Not too far off at least. I also switch back and forth between E10 and Ethanol-Free fuel (still available up here) to dilute the ethanol a bit. It probably doesn't save me any money though since it costs about 30 cents more.

By the time I trashed it out in 2021 it was down to about 21-22 mpg. But it did have over 300,000 miles on it. Need to push for a Diesel engine Subaru if that is the best mpg you can get using petrol (gas). Worst I get with my Diesel 2013 XV (Crosstrek) is low 40's mpg town driving and high 40's out and about. Mind you our fuel prices (UK) you would think we are burning gold in our tanks...crazy. I realize blaming RFG for decreased efficiency is the most fun thing to blame (because it can be put on tree-hugging liberals) but there are many things that contribute. At start up and until all fluids are warm, they're viscosity is higher and the engine works harder, as do differentials. Engines will start and remain in closed loop state much longer, and when combined with the amount of idling people think they need, this burns a LOT of fuel. Sit in the car longer, chatting away, you fog your windows up. The defrost is working - large draw for the electric in the rear, more significantly the air con system for the defroster drying the air out, and in the meantime idling, idling.
I have preached the gospel I learned as a young lad listening to Click & Clack many, many years ago: start it up, and get moving within 1-2 minutes. Those foggy windows? The huge contributor to this is people jump in the car and go through their "brrrr, it's so damn cold" associated with much more respiration, which puts a very significant amount of moisture in the air - fogs the windows up - more time idling. Try breathing through your nose & avoid talking. Go ahead, laugh it off, but my father taught me this as a kid, and I in turn to my son, and dad is right - it works. If there is still some fogging, crack the front windows (and suck it up, the cold air coming in for a minute or two won't kill anyone, but fogged windows will.)
Final thought - it is incredibly ironic how people seemed to know a lot more about this many years ago. Yet when "Gore Gas" came along in 2000, with prices eclipsing $2/gal for the first time (and staying that way through 8 years of GWB) I'll be damned if I haven't seen an epidemic of people idling the crap out of their cars. Up in the UP (Upper Peninsula, Michigan) I'd see people leaving their cars running when going in the grocery store. I blew it off - this is hardcore winter territory. But then it turned up everywhere. I see it constantly. When people have someone jump out and get something in Walgreens, they will idle...but even alone, they let it idle and risk theft. They idle at gas stations. They idle at fast food places eating in the parking lots. I watch neighbors fire their cars up and run back in the house for 20 minutes before returning and leaving for work. And in the burbs? Despite these yellow vehicles called "school buses", running around almost empty, parents sit outside schools in lines to drop off and pick up. The parking lot looks like a factory. And most of this idling is bigger, less efficient trucks, SUV's.
So despite the widespread griping about gas prices - and the inevitable trend of blaming Dem Presidents during their terms - and ignoring it during Rep President terms - a large swath of the population remains perfectly OK wasting fuel and hitting themselves in the pocketbook. (BTW all car guys - remember when Obama was derided for suggesting people check the air pressure in their tires? You are an audience I must assume knows proper air pressure has an enormous impact on mpg, and he was passing this info along from AAA, to an American population that NEVER checks their oil or any other fluid nor do they check their air pressure. I sit behind people with visibly low tires - and for a modern radial tire to visibly show low pressure due to sidewall deflection, the pressure must be extremely low. I can put just 20 psi in my tires and it can't be seen until I draw it down to about 15, or less than half the common 32 psi recommendation. This is an absolute fact, and applies all four seasons...but when a Dem suggested it, he was made fun of for a week. Thus, the biggest impact on MPG seems to me to be political division. In my own life, the more lefty people I make these suggestions to welcome them and put them to use. The more righty they lean, the more they laugh me off.
