  • The Crosstrek can be thought of as the Outback's mini-me. Essentially a Subaru Impreza wagon with some additional rugged touches the Crosstek is one of the most capable small crossovers in America while also being one of the most car-like in its class.

    My ten cents if you are looking for a small crossover the Crosstrek is only one worth getting. Its not perfect but it's few flaws are over shadowed by it's many pros. I would have to say my favorite thing about this car is that it does not have gimmicks. Every thing has a practical purpose. It is a little lacking on power but I get 490 mile to a tank (highway) so you can keep your 11 sec 1/4 mile.

      Good point, i was frustrated by the lack of boot space but it's still manageable for my needs and it's still very unique in its class. I'm looking at purchasing one tomororow. Was hoping to wait for the 2.5l in the MY2021 series but I just found we're only getting the 2.0 in Australia, Aaaaargh!!!

    A couple things to add. The plate in the bottom center of the rear bumper can be removed. There are hitches that fit behind that hole. You can also replace the plate with a brake light. In the armrest compartment there is a USB connector. I have a 16 gig flash drive of music and audio books I plug in there as it is compatible with the head unit. I'm unsure if it was Subaru's intention but the slot you had business cards in on the center console has been used as a cell phone holder. if you're a camper you can fold the rear seats down and fit a twin air mattress in there. Finally, the design and layout of the temperature control dials were to support easy operation with snow gloves on.

    I recently upgraded from a 2001 outback with nearly 300,000 miles on it to a brand new 2016 crosstrek. I love it everything about it. The size is perfect for me and my lifestyle, the difference between my old outback and this new car is huge. All wheel drive was a must, I live in colorado. Our winters can be intense. It's sporty looking and really easy to fall in love with. Plus, it is a subaru. Truly in love with it.

    sir, your reviews have always been awesome and you keep improving by adding new stuff. I have a suggestion, it would be great if you could include the safety and crash test scores of the vehicles if they are available. especially a company like Subaru which values safety should get the due credit and attention for that. thank you.

    Amazing review!!! Perfect! I suggest anyone getting this also add the Pedal Commander that’s meant for this specific car. It opens it up! Makes it FUN! I promise. The throttle is way more responsive, more downright torque and higher revs, where the power unleashes… and adaptable at any moment, to have more spirited driving like on-ramps for expressways in sport mode, punchy city mode ( maybe too jerky for some but punctual when needed) or for eco mode at 29-30 mpg savings. The pick-up at highway speed in sport plus is incredible, nothing like stock. Well worth the money. For like $270, even installment plans available it was sick. This is not a paid promotion. I just subbed and love this review. Enjoy this car! Hopefully I’m able to find intake spreaders and some tune ups in the future. Great for rideshare utility as well.

    When you opt for the CVT the rear axle gets 40% off the power and front axle gets 60% as default and is equipped with active torque split AWD. The manual on the other hand is equipped with a viscous centre differential.

    Your reviews are the best around. Very thorough. Would you mind if I made a suggestion? There are three important categories that I think you leave out in your reviews. Perhaps for certain reasons I'm not aware of. Anyways, I think it would be nice to see these:
    1. You sit in the drivers seat, the rear seats, and even in the trunk area, however I never see you sit in the passenger seats. I think it is the second most important seat in any vehicle. Also, so many vehicles lack a height adjustment on the passenger seat. So passenger seat comfort is very important for shorter and taller passengers.
    2. Safety. How safe is the vehicle? IIHS and Government crash test ratings. They are very important to many people and families when considering a vehicle.
    3. Reliability. This info might be a little harder to find. Consumer reports and JD power usually has them.
    Adding these to your already thorough reviews would provide to the public the most comprehensive check list. You already provide the best detailed reviews and this would only add to it. In fact with these three I can not think of anything else that would be missing. Thanks Alex and keep up the great work!

    Alex, to be clear the boxer engine has one crankshaft with two pairs of cylinders opposed to each other. The description you gave that the pistons were banging against each other describes a twin crankshaft engine like the Deltoid diesel engine with three banks of cylinders, all opposed to one another and having three remote crankshafts at the ends of the engine.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The pistons are still moving in the manner described, I never mentioned where the crank shaft was because my elbows don't rotate 180 degrees. I was simply explaining why the engine is called a boxer engine.

    fyi, the hybrid is more like a limited with standard rear radar lane change assist safety features, but without eyesite (which we didn't want) it also has cloth seats, (which we did want) and keyless, auto climate control and the added hp of the hybrid. As a bonus we get crazy mileage, 41mpg from dfw to mem for instance.

    Btw, I really enjoy driving the challenger hellcat. Thanks to you. Alex-- This is my first American muscle car. so comfortable. Your 2009 challenger review did it for me. I'd always drive German cars.(Porsche). I took my gt3 RS for service when I got home. I sat in the Hellcat, the width of the interior make it really comfortable and I feel safe on the road. It is actually longer than my cayenne S. From looking at it. It is wider than the cayenne SUV. When I get time, I want to take the hellcat to Vegas from Orange County on a Long stretch road. Vanishing Point!! Bro-- 😁

    Of course the Crosstrek feels bigger & more grown-up than the other sub-compact crossovers. It's more of a compact per the U.S. EPA, which defines compact hatches/crossovers at 165 to 177 inches long, and crossovers at 173 to 177 with international models. It is also based off the compact Impreza platform (like the Impreza hatch), while the HRV is based off the sub-compact Fit platform. I can understand it's market intent, and why most folks would cross-shop this with the subcompacts.

    I find it funny your comments on cabin noise as this was a complaint Subaru recieved on the earlier models which they attempted to address with thicker window glass and an insulated fire wall in the 2016 version. I've heard handling gets even better if you add a strut and sway bar. Rumor is the 2017 model's starlink system will have android. We are mid run in the production cycle of this vehicle and I believe it will change drastically when Subaru goes to the universal vehicle frame they are talking about. I have a 2014 Crosstrek and I do think it's under powered but that's the trade off for the fuel economy Subaru was targeting. Currently they haven't announced any plans for a turbo model. Which is sad. Still this is a great platform for the camper, biking, hiking types.

    Eye-Sight also works if you can't see, in a recent test including manufacturers like Audi, Volvo, BMW,... Subaru Eye-Sight was the only system that recognized people wearing dark clothes in the dark and always avoided hitting them.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It did work better than other systems for recognizing people, however that's because the others don't use radar for pedestrian detection, they use a single camera for that. In fog and rain the radar systems detect traffic more reliably and sooner than the EyeSight system.
