I just bought a Studio Display yesterday. The first day I thought that it’s not that different to my 4K Dell monitor. Today I sat in front of the studio display and I have to say, that this thing is amazing. Just one cable even with my 16“ MacBook Pro M1 Max - yes it charges the MacBook. I would not buy it for private use cases, but for business it’s great and reduces taxes as well.
I have one showing up on Tuesday, my iMac has been rendered obsolete because of OS updates and the lack of ability to handle files from the Z9, etc. For now I'm going to run it off my MPB M1 Max until I decide which new Mac to pick up.
I just got one of these displays along with a 14” M3 Max MacBook Pro to replace my old 27” iMac. The Studio Display is awesome. And I have to say after using a 5k 27” iMac, you CANNOT go back to a 4k display. They all look blurry. The addition of the USB-C ports on the back is also great and cleaned up some cables from backup drives I have on my desk. I also had a 12 South shelf that I used on the back of my iMac to hold a couple of those drives and with a little ingenuity, it still works with the Studio Display. After using this for a week now, I’m not sure why everyone was complaining about this display when it came out. I can see having a better refresh rate would be good, but things like complaining about the cable don’t make sense to me. In my almost 40 years of using computers, I have never had a pet chew on a power cable or any become frayed. If your pet is chewing on a power cable, then you have bigger things to worry about than replacing the cable… like replacing your pet!
I could almost have written your comment myself - so well done. Grin. Around the time I began to plan my long delayed upgrade to my home Apple based computer ecosystem, I purchased my Studio Display in April of 2022. Also around that time, I surmised that a 27" new Apple Silicon based iMac would probably not be built until 2024 - long before any of us realized that Apple would NEVER build a 27" Apple Silicon based iMac. Having used 2010 27" iMac and an external secondary 24" display monitor, I came to appreciate the necessity of having a desktop system with as much display area as possible. But, since 2018, I had been using a 13" MacBook Air and that iPad Pro as my primary computer system. Fast forward to about a month ago, , on November 7th, Apple delivered my new apace black 14" M3 Pro MBP w/36 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD storage. I now have, on my completed upgraded desktop system consisting of a 12.9" iPad Pro (2018), that Studio Display and now my MBP providing me - if needed - 3 displays to facilitate my desktop computer based tasks. I couldn't be more pleased with my completed ecosystem upgrade.- especially that 5K Studio Display aiding these 70 year old eyes of mine.
I’m not sure what much of it you say is about, but I do thank you for mentioning your experience and conclusion w/re to 5k>4k. Ive been auditioning 4k monitors for my MBP M1 and everything comes up a dud. Not really enough brightness, uneven color dispersion, and with that 14” Retina display always in my peripheral vision , everything 4k looks dull, less than distinc and with a noticeable lack of vibrance. Finally, the retina loses patience and kicks my ass to pack up that f’n 4k thang Immeduteky and take it UPS. This has became me a loop by now, despite known, celebrity youtube techsperts having touted the superiority of the boxed thing I’m now driving to ups. As a longtime Apple user, naturally I fear and Hate Apple. The most hideous thought for me to sustain is the possibility of purchasing an ASD. So, if I might ask your opinion, is a dull lack of vibrance a 4k signature? If 5k is the only choice I know I’d try something like LG first. Thanks I appreciate your reading this.
@@Ed_Mann I don't understand your comment. If you fear and hate Apple, why are you using Apple devices? Anyway, the BenQ monitor is supposed to be decent. There are reviews on TH-cam.
@@timz9862 my comment is intended to be a combination of humor and truth. I’ve been using apple and windows for decades. I fear and hate Apple because it seems like since the G5, every Apple device I purchase (for 3x what it’s really worth) eventually punches me in the gut with stupid basic stuff they’ve chosen to not include, or not refine. And yet for one very important thing I do, only Apple devices do the job, and that because of is Apple’s sync function. As a writer it’s so great to have every letter I type immediately present on iPad, iPhone and MacBook Pro. Windows won’t do that, that I’m aware of. Butbecause Apple is Cult that (a) kicks their customers in the nuts as an M.O. (b) overcharges their customers because they can (c) is a gaggle of billionaires that engage in massive abuse of human rights at foxxconn their manufacturing facility, and leverages the shit out of their largely hypnotized followers, many of whom use Apple just to sustain an imaginary identity of superiority on social media, I hate and fear Apple. They’re psychopaths who’ve figured out how to abuse both their manufacturing workers and their customers in order to become multi billionaires. To me that is reprehensible. All that said, I’m primarily a music producer, and for that, since 2006 I’ve used ASUS laptops, which always have 2-3 of every port currently used to transmit and receive every current data type. Since 2016 it’s been ASUS Zenbooks. Every windows machine I’ve owned runs circles around every Macbook I’ve owned since OS9. I understood that when APPLE switched to the Intel chip, the OS would be structured like Windows, but coded and engineered from ppl who have no experience with windows. I used my G4 desktop until 2010 when it simply could not be supported anymore, that was OS9 and it was great. I purchased one apple OSX MacBook, and what a turd that was, eventually developing a disease where every command required that I enter a unique password, insane. APPLE just shrugged their shoulders and told me they could not fix it nor could the osx MacBook I owned be upgraded but yay! I should just buy their latest osx MacBook. I did not do that, instead using only ASUS laptops runnng XP, WIN7, and I never had any of the rumored windows problems. Win7 was like an upgraded OS9. I’ve never experienced a single crash in Windows, or “the blue screen of death” ever, not once. I used these machines on months long world wide tours, to compose, mix and master albums and for years if intense sound design work when was contracting for companies in Silicon Valley. Never one operational problem, AND I was able to avoid the APPLE “we’ve decided that you no longer need any ports” kick in the nuts stunt. My current ASUS machines have 2 usb A, B, 3 Thunderbolt 4/ usb C ports, HDMI 2.1, and VGA ports. Q: why tf would APPLE put hdmi 2.0 in their M1 Pro? A: to fuck with you. “Oh, you can have hdmi 2.0, which was developed in 2014, but for that you’ll have to buy the M2.” What a bunch of pirates). Currently I have iphonexr (very good), iPads air 4 (very good) and air 5 (wonky, it crashes, the screen goes dim then flashes bright, trying to type anywhere is a mess of inserted word fragments from other documents, addresses from 15 years ago, email addresses I haven’t used in over a decade, and trying to type in notes always maxes out something in the iPad. Notes will freeze, but if I wait 5-10 minutes then it’s clear and I can resume typing. Trying to edit when typing in Notes on iPad Air 5 isn’t possible. Cannot place the cursor where I need it and if I think I have, I lose the paragraph of a portion of the paragraph. Again iPad Air 4: none if these problems. Trying to type in Notes on the Air 5 is nothing but a retrograde time wasting battle in futility. If I intend to type “someone”, at “some..” the air 5 will auto complete the word for me as “something”. No that’s not what i wanted to type Apple, so I’m constantly having to retype the word I want not just twice, but 3x. at which point Notes will usually accept my version. Then there’s trying to type a word like “trying.” That usually comes out as “try ngtr y”. Then there auto correct, which substitutes a word with a wrong letter with a misspelling so severe that iOS can’t even recognize it. “Strengthrn”. Oh, you must mean “Qsdtringith”. Really? But it gets worse. I just typed “mean”, but iOS 17.x on Air 5 corrected “mean” to “meam”. Fuck! No, I wrote it correctly the first time Apple. You soulfuckers. So now I’m wrestling with the iPad by typing ‘mean” again, 3X at which point Apple gives up and accepts the correct spelling. BTW every correctly spelled word I type has the “mispelling” underline. For a while I took that seriously, until I realized that it’s just another kick in tne balls from Apple. Of course typing on an air 5 is not easy to do given the air 5’s resistance to positioning the cursor or selecting words. Out of 10 tries, I can expect 3 successes. Again APPLE tells me these things aren’t really happening I must be doing something wrong., The air 5 doesn’t like iOS 17.x but the air 4 has no problems with iOS 17.x. ??? You tell me. I’ve been doing typing and writing on iPads since 2016 and until the air 5, never had a problem. All of this is to say that I see an obvious degradation in Apple products. My MacBook Pro M1 is ok, I guess. Not really but Jesus I paid so much for it that I’ll insist “it’s ok.” The MBP M1 is my first experience with macOS, which I think is bloated, innefficient and damn! macOS crashes continually. My last reason for fearing, hating but using APPLE product is that APPLE is simply too cool to supply customers with user guides. My God! If they did that, they’d seem vulnerable, because anyway, they know that hundreds of cult followers will pay to create and sustain websites so THEY can tell Apple customers how to use their new devices or the new os, just to be associated with the Cult of Apple. If anyone wants to know how to run their Apple device or latest os, it’s simple: type what you seek to learn into any search engine and then start clicking links private websites that portend to know the answer. OR - the hapless user could ask the apple support forum! Sure! That works great. No it doesn’t. Never go to the Apple support forum. It’s useless. Just type “where is Brightness control located in macOS Sonoma?” Into any search engine and click links. Someone somewhere will know how to locate it. Yes it’s just that stupid. And I wush I weren’t dependent on Apple, but I am. The iPad is far superior to a Samsung galaxy tablet. iPhone under iOS is so far is superior the Samsung running Android. Anything Android is terrible. Tne MacBook Pro I try to avoid. It’s clunky, the OS is so far beyond bloated that I’m now convinced the only reason Apple gets away with macOS is because Apple users have never tried windows, and they believe that the problems that plagued pre-XP Windows remain. A good, non manufacturer created stripped down copy of Windows anything runs sleek and smooth. With Apple, users don’t have that option. I hope this answers your question, and thanks for responding.
@@timz9862 as an addendum: I love that there is no “cult of Microsoft/ASUS/MSI/Dell…” etc. You’ll never see an “ohh ahh look at those curves” unboxing post on Reddit about any of those brands. But a new MacBook Air? The cult springs to life, celebrating this new thing from Cult HQ. because it’s light and thin! Of course there are even more posts by MacBook users complaining that because their cat walked over their MacBook Air or Ori, or because they carried it in their laptop backpack, the screen is now cracked. In other words, never do the thing that’s the reason you paid through the nose to own a MacBook for to begin with. It’s best to put that gorgeous thin light shiny cult trinket on a stand on a desk and then never move it. And don’t close the lid unless you’ve retained and insert that special sheet of tissue paper the MacBook shipped with. Because the 2nd most complained about thing about the Apple designed MacBook is that there’s no clearance between the keyboard and screen. Endless posts complaining about the keyboard becoming imprinted on, or cracking the screen. But Apple shipped it with that highly specialized acid free non chemical micro-thin sheet of paper between the keyboard and screen, in order to prevent those problems. So users spend hours asking Apple, and web searching to learn what this magic tissue might be, and where they can get a stack of it. Nothing. Apples response is “acid free, non chemical, and thinner than a sheet of printing paper.” WTF. They have the tissue, someone has bought the device that requires the tissue, but sorry, Apple cannot make it available or even tell their users what it is. Now tell me that is not purposeful sideways jab, designed to create lots of business relacing cracked screens, or for the more intelligent user, guaranteeing the purchase of Apple Care +, good for 3 years, after which you’ll have to pay APPLE anyway, whatever it is they charge $350?, To replace a $3 piece of glass in a device that is designed to crack that same glass. Tell me this isn’t a cynical racket. That’s a rhetorical request, it’s a racket.
Refurbished is the way to go for all Apple products. I recently got a Studio Display for a significant discount. It’s in excellent condition, except for one tiny pin sized scuff mark.
Just ordered my refurbished Studio Display. I had to wait until the base model was in stock again after waiting since October last year. Can’t wait to enhance my workflow!
Thats the thing, it is not just the monitor - it is the webcam + decent sound, plus integration into the OS and if you are reading/coding a lot I think I could not deal with a 4k monitor. I was in the same boat, came from an imac 27", there were not a lot of options to get a clean setup, I think Apple nailed it for their target group.
What is the mic quality of the Apple Studio Display? Is it an acceptable mic for voice overs and video recording? I am interested in minimalist approach so I don't like to have more one cable (thunder bolt for powering up my mac pro folded in a stand - and that's it) in my next desk set up. Before I got with that approach I want to know if I should even go this route or not! I am envisioning, a set up with one screen (Apple Display Studio) wired to my mac pro, wireless keyboard and mouse (or trackpad).
The mic is certainly great for meetings - can't vouch for production quality. I saved the cost and hassle of an external keyboard by getting the VESA version and just having my laptop open directly below the monitor. That way I can use a mouse but also the laptop trackpad.
I bought a $15 5cm thick shelf from Ikea (Lack) to use as a stand and it now sits at the perfect height for me. Whilst I had little choice but to get the Studio Display's 5K to accomodate my work needs, I just couldn't bring myself to spring for the height adjustable stand! The color reproduction is excellent, connectivity perfect and the quality of text rendering on a retina panel makes a huge difference (upgraded from a Thunderbolt Display that I was very happy with).
The price is quite literally the only thing that kept me from getting the studio display when i was in the market for a new monitor. Build quality, color accuracy, and the native scaling for Mac is soooo nice for me
The only thing that bothers me about this Studio Display is the lack of a second thunderdolt port for my setup. This means in practice you can't daisy chain other devices behind the monitor. I've found now my solution in OMC Thunderbolt 4 Hub 🙂 My setup with Mac mini M1 2020 with PROMISE Pegasus RAID 16 TB and Thunderbolt External Drive and Studio Display.
Hey there! Thank you for this video :) I was wondering: I use Mac for my hobbies and personal computer and have a windows laptop for work Can I connect both at the same time and switch from one to the other like in “normal” monitors? Thanks!
Opinions: I am confused - can anyone help. Will I be happier with an Apple Studio Display *27") or BenQ PD32225U (32") for video editing with Davinci Resolve.
Man, I just purchased one with the title and height. I was fighting myself before not to buy one because I also felt there are better ones out the for cheap right? I tried some and the last one I tried was the Dough Spectrum One Glossy 27in and while that display is nice. The only benefit I got from that monitor was refresh rate. It just lacked fidelity in clarity and brightness and also the seamless integration across apple devices. For example, I didn't even know your AirPods can automatically switch back and forth between your phone and Mac when you play content or any audio. Before on other monitors I would have to always manually switch back to Mac. Apple knows how to attract you with the easy and comfort their product provides and while it can cost you a lot for the most part it is worth it. They could be better but I guess we all have to keep refilling our tank of Copium till they make another display for us to spend money on again.
Great video. What is your cable setup when using the Studio Display with the TS4? Do you power your Macbook through the CalDigit or from the monitor? Thanks!
My Studio arrived today, now plugged into M4 Mac Mini, one cable. Stunning video, superb surround sound, built-in webcam, clean elegant lines. Go Apple!🤩
Trouble is my 27 inch monitors feels to small for me. Ive just bought the new M4 Mini and really would like 3a 2 inch display. Especially now Im working in FCP and for web design Divi 5 that has two vertical panals of settings each side of the web page. The scaling issues are things that are stalling me, but a few reviews Ive seen have said this really isnt a issue these days.
I love mine, because it’s 5k I can run the resolution lower to make things bigger for my aging eyes. The speakers are really good, the mic and webcam are perfectly acceptable. Just makes for a cleaner set up.
Hey…I admit Apple’s price for their display still makes me wince. But we have to acknowledge that the price is fair, considering no other display company can come out with a 5K display at a cheaper price. An unfortunate truth 🤷🏾♂️
Great video Kyle. I'm enjoying your content and your overall quality of videos! I'm about a day into using my Studio Display with a Mac mini Pro, and I'm loving it so far. Almost went with something cheeper - so glad I didn't. Coming from a 5K iMac I knew that not having a 27" 5K would bother me, but mostly the thing that would drive me crazy would be the lack of brightness and volume control, and just the seamlessness of the Apple hardware working together as it should.
Dear Kyle, this is a great review, of a great display. I agree 100% with everything that u say here, i guess we value the same things. The only thing id like to ask is do u think its worth waiting incase Apple decides to make a larger than 27" StudioDisplay version 🙂
Design shouldn't be underestimated. I'm still using a 2011 iMac because it still is great and still looks stunning. Crazy that some modern devices have worse displays and speakers than this old computer.
I just hope you have Time Machine and an external backup drive. The Fusion Drive in my 2017 iMac died about a month ago. Fortunately, I had everything backed up on an OWC external drive. My new Mac M4 mini has a 512 GB internal drive and 24 GB RAM but I have 1 TB of data so I bought an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual to ensure all my data is reasonably secure. I can't justify spending $1600+ on a monitor so I bought the ASUS ProArt PA27JCV at half the price. Next on my list is a pair of Kanto ORA4 speakers with 9" stands. That will be far superior any internal monitor speakers.
I used to do several Zoom meeting each week when using a 4k 21.5-in iMac and found a second display to be really handy, so I bough the smallest 4k display I could afford, a 28-inch plastic ACER - I'd have preferred 24-n but none were available. In time I switch to using an M1 Mac mini and used that display for seven months as a single display. It was unsatisfactory, I had to use an external webcam, speakers and a microphone plus a Thunderbolt dock to connect my various external storage drives. In July of 2023 I spent part of an inheritance on a Studio display and was able to ditch the speakers, Thunderbolt dock and microphone because of the quality of the same things on the Display, plus it was a proper 5k display rather than an awkward menu-driven 4k that never scaled for macOS properly. I dislike the built-in webcam with a passion bordering on hate and now use an excellent Insta360 Link 4k webcam. Not cheap, but very effective. I already used a VESA mount arm for the 4k ACER, so I chose the VESA mount for the Studio Display.
Hey Kyle, I am curious why you didn’t use the studio display thunderbolt port into the TS4 dock and then use the TS4 into the MacBook for a single cable power solution. Is it because the studios displays thunderbolt port is 3 and not 4?
I've seen a bunch of your videos and your reviews are always good. I find them entertaining and useful. I so want to splurge on the Studio and the 5k display. It looks so good. Love your set up bro!
Hey, Kyle. I lucked out and got a used Studuo Display with the height adjustment for $1,250. A lot of people don’t notice the fact that it’s the same DPI as their laptop or iPhone, but it’s a big deal if you do.
I've been using the studio display with my m1 pro MacBook pro since the display was released. All of the critiques in this video are 100% accurate but it is more than the sum of its parts and I absolutely love it. Maybe when we are able to get more bandwidth out of thunderbolt 4 Apple will release a display with full array local dimming, high refresh rate and VRR. Until then, the studio display is a very enjoyable option if you can stomach the price.
a screen that doesn't have HDR, when someone say this they need to remember cheap is not just price but also features just cuz price is jacked u[ doesn't mean it's rich in features as well
I'm a professional graphic designer and just bought a "cheap" $800 ASUS ProArt PA27JCV monitor. Granted, it's not quite as nice as the ASD but it will do everything I need for half the price. And with part of the money saved, I bought a pair of Kanto ORA4 speakers with Kanto 9" stands that are far superior to any built-in computer speakers.
The lg monitor that your mentioning has a yellowish tint to it when connected via a MacBook. Do you have a recommended setting for the best colors possible ?
I went with Studio Monitor and I love it. The screen is great, of course, but the included speakers are very good and the included camera so no extra stuff on the desk and their associated wires. The four ports at back power my MBAir and connect my SSD Time Machine. That’s all I need. I did get a refurbished price on it. I plan to use it for a long time so cost is not a big issue. I had the Cinema Screen (1440) before it for 12 years and it was great too.
I never click on random videos on my youtube homescreen from creators to whom I do not subscribe or with whom I am otherwise unfamiliar. But I haven't seen a Studio Display video in a bit, and I am caught up on my regular tech channels, so I thought why not check this out. This is the first video i've watched from this channel. Annnd, wow, what an amazing job all around; the entire production quality is minimum a B+, and considering the smallish size of this channel, that's a pretty huge compliment (grades of A and above are reserved for the giants; Linus, MKBHD, Arun, etc.). And now that I've seen all these other videos you've published, which are on topics I know and love, and are new to me, I feel like i've found kind of a hidden gem. This is exactly the type of channel that will be at a million subs in the next four years, mark my words. I am now one of those subs :)
I have the Samsung display and it has consistent connection issues with the camera, mic, and speakers. I wish I had bought the Apple Studio display. Next time.
Hi there Kyle. I don't know if you recall but that's exactly what I was saying a few months ago in the comment section in one of your previous videos. There's just nothing like an ASD on the market. And it sits on many more desks that people have been led to believe. I'm a casual user who works with text and find the nano-texture version super soft and easy on my eyes. Sharpness is there and I don't agree with others that find the nano-texture option grainy and fuzzy. There are a few bad thing concerning the ASD though. I've had issues with coil whine and buzzing sound coming from the back of the display and am waiting for a replacement unit. All in all I don't regrer my decision one bit. However, top notch video as always and keep up the good work. Wish you all the best.
Thanks for the review. Quite useful. If the speakers are as good as you say, then that goes a long way to justifying the cost. I had heard that the camera was subpar, but that's less important to me.
I bought an M3 iMac and I loved it but sadly the glossy screen killed my eyes so I had to return it. At least with the Studio Display they offer a matte option.
I've currently got the same LG you used to have ... I like it but even with calibration it's not very colour accurate compared to my MacBook display. SO I use the LG to build my timelines and then have to colour grade on the 14" MacBook haha so the Studio Display is tempting. Just wish it was 32"!
In what world are you getting a 5k monitor that looks this beautiful & works seamlessly at $800. I couldnt even find a 4k monitor worth my money at that price
For me, the Studio Display is the best Monitor for a Mac. First, 5K Resolution on 27" is the major Pro. All the 4K Monitors have just half the Amount of Pixels (14.7 MP instead of just 8.3 MP, because 4K is just 3.8K and 5K is 5.1K, which is just the Resolution horizontally) and every Mac has to scale up all the Time, from 2,5K to 4K (MacOS GUI has no 4K Option), which is much worse for the Picture and for the constant GPU load needed. And any other 5K Monitor available (LG Ultrafine and Samsung S9) are Plastic and wobbling on the Desk. The Studio Display made of Aluminium and Glas (instead of Plastic on the Front and on the Back) is so sophisticated and high Quality, that all of the Alternatives seem to be overpriced and not really comparable. And yes, if you compare the SD with all the other Monitors out there, it is definitely worth the Price. You have to count everything together and then, it does make Sense.
I just purchased this monitor 2 months ago, after thinking about it a lot for the same reasons, but I couldn't be more happier "it just works" with my MBA 15 M2, plus it also works flawlessly with my HP Omen PC using thunderbolt (yes I game with this at 5K using a pc gaming laptop), for medium casual gaming. I don't have anymore external speakers, microphone and camera. It's not perfect, but it's close for me. Nice video!
I have zero clues if it dies or not, but from my experience using Apple related products are best because of same chipsets or languages of but buying all Apple is ideally the best way.❤
Great video Kyle. So happy you made that video, because I am thinking of moving away from my 27" iMac and wanted to retain a 5K resolution and price wise in Canada there's not much difference between the studio display and other 5K. As you said 4K is where the savings can be had, but was not happy with the customer reviews on many including on the better known brands. The one reason why I probably won't buy a studio display is because I want to hook the work laptop to the same display and enjoy more screen that's the one negative for me of the studio display only one computer at a time. Otherwise, if it was just for my own use I would get a studio display with a Mac mini. You hit all the points: all in one, convenience and it just works with less clutter on the desk. It would save me the cost of a hub as the display would have all I need in terms of ports. Still going to get a Mac mini sometime next year and probably want to try the LG ultra wide 5K display. I'd like to experience not having to move windows around and just work.
I have studio display hooked up to my mac mini M2 Pro - was my upgrade from a 27" iMac and I got tired of waiting whether Apple were going to bring out a replacement for the 27" iMac - the rumours seemed to say that the bigger iMac was never going to be released. To save a bit of cash, I went for 512GB on the mac mini and added 4TB in an external Acasis enclosure with Samsung 980 PRO SSD, which via TB4 seems to run just as fast as the internal SSD. I seem to be the only one who doesn't like the sound from the studio display though, so have some small logitech desktop speakers and sub under the desk which is a marked improvement! @Kyle Erickson, if you're looking for a new home for your Fluance Ai41's, look no further - I'd gladly take them off you! 😃
@@mattwalkerify good to know about the sound. And after watching Kyle's video on external drive, I realized I was overusing the internal drive, so I got an Acasis enclosure and the WD black 2 Tb and I am very happy with that combo it's super fast, gets me peace of mind if the internal drive dies, it happened to me once and should make switching computers easier.
Thanks for the review. Good information. Integrated monitor which works well with the Mac ecosystem I have. May consider it later on from the refurbished store.
This is an outstanding display quality for super super expensive. I have tried it along with Dell one that costs about one fourth. Studio Display is only worth if you are buying for business and can take tax deductions. For general users this is not a good deal.
The price is fine - all competition 5k displays are at the same price range for much lower quality of everything. 4k monitors are nowhere near in terms of sharpness. It's simply the best screen on the market for a Mac.
Still doesn't make the price fine. Motion is a smeary mess compared to other modern panels. The prices are only high because simply there is no competition because PC world are not going sacrifice monition for small gain of PPI. Also this has no HDR and it has an absurd price for what? LED tech that is a decade old? 8K tvs failed as well because PPI isn't everything.
@@83442handleBut, you dont need or benefit from 8k tv. But, if you are examine documents or doing other work, the large display and its super crispness is amazing.
@@Applecompuser Right because there isn't content for 8k that would allow sitting closer but my point is sacrificing more important things like the terrible motion isn't worth the smaller gains of the higher PPI. There isn't a massive difference from 163 PPI(4K 27") compared to 218 PPI(5K 27"). Thats a 28% difference. What is a much bigger difference is the awful 60Hz motion of the 5k Apple displays. Thats a 67% difference just from a 120hz display. The jump from 60Hz to 120Hz is massive but the jump from 163 PPI to 218 PPI isn't(I know as I own a 5k iMac).
@@83442handle Besides gaming, what does a 120 Hz refresh rate do for the user? I work in legal and engineering and have already noted that the 5K IS useful for examining documents.
@@83442handle I have 100 hz display and apple studio side by side - don't see any difference in motion. While i DO see a massive difference in sharpness to any 4k display. Price is high, but so is the price of ALL 5k panels. Meaning apple is not overcharging for brand. And it delivers superior product to all competing 5k screens.
The only thing I don't love about the studio display is the random disconnects (firmware updates and new cables never fixed it) but as a music producer it was perfect for me. With the additional ports so saving money on a dock and the speakers are actually great for secondary referencing for mixing so I ended up saving money on additional speakers/monitors. It basically comes to the same amount as a good 4k but it's all in one package.
I got random disconnects when using it with my MacBook Pro. In my case it turned out that the port I was using has been worn enough over the last 4 years that the connection is occasionally dropping. I moved to a different port on my MBP and the problem stopped.
I bought one of the first Studio displays. My biggest disappointment is the webcam. It is absolutely horrible quality, I don't need 1080p but it is just darn poor quality. I wish they had a replacement pop out camera which could fix the monitor. I have been through numerous firmware upgrades to fix the camera. None have worked, it is blurry today. I added a BENQ light bar and another webcam (there goes clean appearance) fighting for mounting space but it stinks. How could Apple miss the target so badly on such a pricey item?
As always, great video. I've been tempted to get the Studio Display ever since it released to pair with my M1 Studio Max, but I just can't justify the expense with my use case (frankly, the Studio Max was an extravagance). I'm quite happy with my 27" 2K monitor, an ASUS ProArt.
I agree, and given the lack of a real stand and no vesa mount (typical Apple) I see the studio display as more expensive than it looks. In credible to think for that amount of money you have to stack books to get it only apprxinstely close to the right height, and just to protect the absurd investment, the display can’t be sitting on top of too many books. No swivel, no angling and most typical of Apple, no possibility of mountng it to a real stand for height, pivot and single. For a company that taught itself for design, that’s pathetic, and in purpose, every day on Apple a new form of tacit “fuck you” is discveredl.
A lot of people get expensive Grovemade stands that are like $3-400 and have a $170 metal tray upgrade! I think some of these people would prefer the Apple adjustable stand. It's more minimal. Do you want to look at a bunch of junk on your desk or not? This is the eternal question.
I will get my third Studio Display within one year these days. First one i plugged in and 24h later it was dead. Second one has now unbelievable backlight bleeding and will hopefully be replaced in a few days. So good buildquality does not nessecarily mean good quality.
My boy was like: it’s end of the year and taxes need to be done soon. let me use this money for a display, lower my tax bill and make some more money of the video. That’s what you call a trifecta ;)
@@KyleErickson Thanks a lot for the review. Do you know if the Studio Display still have that issue where its built-in power brick emits high pitch electric current noises?
Kyle, I spent a considerable amount of time watching numerous videos and reading reviews about the Studio Display. Surprisingly, most opinions were negative, suggesting that it wasn't worth the money. This created a dilemma for me, as it made my decision-making process quite challenging. Despite the criticisms, I couldn't identify any compelling alternatives in the market. After much contemplation, I decided to take a risk and purchased the Studio Display two months ago. Opting for the VESA option was a deliberate choice since I didn't want a monitor riser. Given that color/image quality and text sharpness are crucial for me, especially as I spend extended periods writing and reviewing code each day. I'm pleased that the Studio Display has met my needs in terms of performance. However, the drawbacks include the absence of a dedicated on/off button and a non-removable power cable. But it is not a big deal for me.
I got an Apple "refurbished" Studio display for a significant discount. Not going to a 4K display. The Studio display just works flawlessly.
Refurbished is the way to go for all Apple products. I recently got a Studio Display for a significant discount. It’s in excellent condition, except for one tiny pin sized scuff mark.
studio display is 5k
Just ordered my refurbished Studio Display. I had to wait until the base model was in stock again after waiting since October last year. Can’t wait to enhance my workflow!
Is this only a monitor or it's a complete computer?
@@tailung6968 this is just a monitor built specifically for the Mac Studio.
Which software are you using to replace background at 9:10 in your video. Thank you-
That's just swapping backgrounds in meetings. AFAIK all major meeting apps have this
@@KyleErickson Thanks! I thought it was a special app because your edges in the video were crisp and clear.
Quite a contrast between the expensive display and the Ikea monitor stand 😅 but my setup is exactly the same! I’m in love with my Studio Display 👌🏻
The color reproduction is excellent, connectivity perfect and the quality of text rendering on a retina panel makes a huge difference (upgraded from a Thunderbolt Display that I was very happy with).
how close is the LG colors? my main goal is just to match my MacBook Pro colors as close as possible
What about the Samsung ViewFinity S8?
How do you connect the Caldigit with the display seeing that they both charge the laptop ?
The price is quite literally the only thing that kept me from getting the studio display when i was in the market for a new monitor. Build quality, color accuracy, and the native scaling for Mac is soooo nice for me
Holiday sales had them down to $1450 U.S. about.
I think 120hz should be ready for Apple’s line-up
I’m just waiting for a bump on this monitor, wasn’t being updated in ages.
Hey there! Thank you for this video :)
I was wondering: I use Mac for my hobbies and personal computer and have a windows laptop for work
Can I connect both at the same time and switch from one to the other like in “normal” monitors? Thanks!
Opinions: I am confused - can anyone help. Will I be happier with an Apple Studio Display *27") or BenQ PD32225U (32") for video editing with Davinci Resolve.
Why do u kinda sounds like steve carrell?
The only problem I’ve found is RF noise. If you are doing audio production you may pick up some noise in your interface and monitors.
Thanks!
Very fair and even review, notably about nano-texture glass. My iMac has it, it is a life-saver for glare.
Sooooo glad I bit the bullet and got one, though the price still makes me flinch two years later.
Hey…I admit Apple’s price for their display still makes me wince. But we have to acknowledge that the price is fair, considering no other display company can come out with a 5K display at a cheaper price. An unfortunate truth 🤷🏾♂️
A wise man once said "buy it nice or buy it twice" .
I shopped around before I decided on getting a few XDR's and now trying to figure out how can I connect both of my XDR's on my M3 Mac MacBook Pro
Are the speakers in the Studio Display better than those in the M3 iMac?
Same speakers, but with more room, so they should be slightly better, a little bit like when you compare the 14" to 16" MacBook Pro speakers
Isn’t there some resolution issue in using 4K? I thought Mac OS preferred 1440 or 5k.
you’re right
Great video Kyle.
In terms of just picture quality connect to a Mac mini m2, this panel vs the LG you have been using?
So which one?
@@LorenzoNW The 2011 never had a fusion drive. Luckily I use iCloud.
Can you connect to Apple TV 4K ?
can I ask where you got your plant wall?
Hey, Kyle. I lucked out and got a used Studuo Display with the height adjustment for $1,250. A lot of people don’t notice the fact that it’s the same DPI as their laptop or iPhone, but it’s a big deal if you do.
5:00 nano texture on Apple Studio Display was an additional $300. -- for 2024 M4 ipad pro, add $100.
Sooner or later, every one comes to the same conclusion "I can't afford cheap" 🤣
a screen that doesn't have HDR, when someone say this they need to remember cheap is not just price but also features just cuz price is jacked u[ doesn't mean it's rich in features as well
Cheap things are expensive.
Do you have a recommended setting for the best colors possible ?
anyone know what the monitor stand called
I went with Studio Monitor and I love it. The screen is great, of course, but the included speakers are very good and the included camera so no extra stuff on the desk and their associated wires. The four ports at back power my MBAir and connect my SSD Time Machine. That’s all I need. I did get a refurbished price on it. I plan to use it for a long time so cost is not a big issue. I had the Cinema Screen (1440) before it for 12 years and it was great too.
What’s about XDR display?
GREAT review, in depth and very helpful , your refurbished tip is a hit!! 💫
The wallpaper looks awesome.
Is the studio display likely to be updated this year?
😀thanks for this, what kind of speakers are you using?
The ones in the studio display haha
Is that a screen saver at 4:46? Looks like a lava lamp. If so, where can I download it?
you seem to have raised the blacks in your video edit so the studio monitor's black doesn't look deep at all. I just wanted to point that out
I have the Samsung display and it has consistent connection issues with the camera, mic, and speakers. I wish I had bought the Apple Studio display. Next time.
Do you have a link to that monitor stand?
What are you using as a monitor stand? The little white shelf and spot for the caldigit looks awesome!
Ikea ELLOVEN monitor stand, it comes in 2 colour ways
Awesome video. What stands are you using for your bookshelf speakers?
Kanto S4
Very nice review bro... your channel grows to bigger one ❤❤❤...love from india....keep doing the work.
I like the gloss better, it does show color better IMO. Love the Studio display.
Amazing video, thanks! Have you got a link to your monitor riser?
Mine broke (horizontal lines 25% of the bottom) after 15 months. Out of warranty. Didn't get Apple Care. $1,089 to replace display. Disappointing.
the back light bleed is so bad though. but other then that as I designer this is the best display.
Thanks for this video !!
The one thing that hold me back to buy it is true HDR… The panel can’t show it and that’s making it for me not future proof at all
I've currently got the same LG you used to have ... I like it but even with calibration it's not very colour accurate compared to my MacBook display. SO I use the LG to build my timelines and then have to colour grade on the 14" MacBook haha so the Studio Display is tempting. Just wish it was 32"!
Yes it's a good monitor AND yes it costs roughly double what it should.
Your choice what to do with that information 👍
Lol… comparing the Studio Display to other monitors and their prices, it’s definitely a steal. It makes other monitors look overpriced.
How exactly can you define what it should cost?
Or do you mean you wish it cost half, because you don't understand value for money?
In what world are you getting a 5k monitor that looks this beautiful & works seamlessly at $800. I couldnt even find a 4k monitor worth my money at that price
I hate how everyone says the studio display is $1600 when you can clearly find it for 1350 on Amazon pretty frequently.
thank you for this. 🙏 currently shopping for a new Apple computer in our home office and this has helped a lot. 👍✌🖖
I hope apple makes a 32" 5K display with Pro Motion.
Nice video!
I have zero clues if it dies or not, but from my experience using Apple related products are best because of same chipsets or languages of but buying all Apple is ideally the best way.❤
New subscriber here, really dig your content man!
No cords on the large iMac is amazing.
I always catch a peek of Spotify in your videos, you have good taste
This is allll the iMac should be. 27 inches, black bezel, no chin. Perfect iMac.
Good review!
thanks for the video
Enjoying mine...
What is the studio display connected to? I've never had any issues connected to my mac mini M2 Pro......
I got random disconnects when using it with my MacBook Pro. In my case it turned out that the port I was using has been worn enough over the last 4 years that the connection is occasionally dropping. I moved to a different port on my MBP and the problem stopped.
Are your random disconnects continuing, and does it happen from any port? Thank you
I bought one of the first Studio displays.
Nice, you’re using the same riser as I do for the studio display :)
what’s the riser called
@@celinachen8380 it’s the ELLOVEN from Ikea
I want one don’t care what others say, it’s built for Macs and isn’t made of plastic 🎉
Annoyingly I love it. It just works flawlessly. I kinda don’t notice it. And that’s when you know it’s great. It just works. Damn it. $$$$
How is this real? This is the 5th video this week in my feed talking about this exact same topic and how they bought one. wtf!
$1449 at Best Buy right now
Cool Video
You only have one pair of eyes. Don't they deserve 5K?
I'm legally blind and this monitor doesn't give me eye strain after hours of use.
That’s what you call a trifecta ;)
you're not entirely wrong 😂
